Sir Mo Farah reveals he was trafficked to the UK as a child

Mo Farah

Sir Mo Farah was brought to the UK illegally as a child and forced to work as a domestic servant, he has revealed. The Olympic star has told the BBC he was given the name Mohamed Farah by those who flew him over from Djibouti. His real name is Hussein Abdi Kahin.

He was flown over from the East African country aged nine by a woman he had never met, and then made to look after another family’s children, he says.

The long-distance runner has previously said he came to the UK from Somalia with his parents as a refugee. But in a documentary by the BBC and Red Bull Studios, seen by BBC News and airing on Wednesday, he says his parents have never been to the UK – his mother and two brothers live on their family farm in the breakaway state of Somaliland.

Pakistan’s financial capital Karachi flooded by monsoon rains

A flooded street

Torrential rains caused widespread flooding and damage in Pakistan’s financial capital Karachi on Monday, even inundating the business district.

Most underpasses were flooded and there was nowhere to pump the flood waters out to, the chief minister for Sindh province, Murad Ali Shah said.

He said an unprecedented 126 millimeters (4.96 inches) of rain had fallen in three hours.

One death has been confirmed in the latest spell of monsoon rains, adding to the 29 reported since they began last month.

The streets of affluent areas such as the Defence Housing Authority complex and Clifton were flooded, with water gushing into houses.

Karachi’s main streets, which house financial institutions and bank headquarters including Pakistan’s central bank, were flooded and rescue services were using boats to reach stranded people.

The Pakistan Navy was also taking part in the relief and rescue operations.

Interest rate hikes start to pinch small Indian businesses

Small indian businesses hit by drop in demand

In the last few months, Neetee Clothing, a small manufacturer and exporter of fashion apparel based in Gurgaon, has cut back its working capital loan from its bank by a whopping 80 percent as India’s central bank has hiked interest rates twice since May in an effort to tame soaring inflation.

While the company is dipping into its cash reserves for now, managing director Animesh Saxena told Al Jazeera he is worried that that may not be a sustainable strategy in the months ahead when the peak season for his business kicks in.

“We are worried about the peak season again, which is October-November, when we will have to buy a lot of raw material and by the time shipping happens and payment starts coming there is a delay of four to five months,” he said.

Saxena is not alone. Rapid hikes in loan rates in India are prompting many medium, small and micro-businesses (MSMEs) across the country to cut back their dependence on institutional loans as they are unable to bear the increased interest cost.

That is the latest challenges to these companies, which, for the past couple of years have already seen their profit margins shrink with a rise in raw materials costs and a slowdown in demand on the back of the pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia war.

US, Japan agree to cooperate on economic fallout of Ukraine war

US Secretary General, Janet Yellen with Japan Finance Minister, Shunichi Suzuki

The top economic officials of the United States and Japan have pledged to work together to tackle rising food and energy prices while reiterating their condemnation of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki on Tuesday said the war had increased exchange rate volatility, posing risks to economic and financial stability.

The two sides pledged to work together on currency issues under their commitments as members of the Group of Seven (G7) and Group of 20 (G20) economic groupings.

“We will continue to consult closely on exchange markets and cooperate as appropriate on currency issues, in line with our G7 and G20 commitments,” the two sides said in a joint statement following their meeting in Tokyo.

The two leaders jointly condemned Russia’s “unprovoked, unjustifiable, and illegal war against Ukraine” and said they would work together to support Kyiv in overcoming its economic challenges.

Mount Vesuvius

An American tourist fell into the crater of  Mount Vesuvius in an attempt to retrieve his mobile phone at the weekend, Italian police told CNN on Monday. The 23-year-old man from Baltimore was hiking an unauthorized trail accompanied by three relatives on Saturday morning, the carabinieri of the provincial command of Naples said. Two British tourists were also spotted walking on the forbidden trail.

Following the fall, the man reported only a few bruises on his hands, arms and back.

He was treated by an ambulance that arrived on the scene, but he did not want to go to the hospital, police said.

The path had clear signs warning of danger and forbidden access, according to the force, which added that the prosecutor will decide whether to proceed with a formal charge against them for invasion of public territory. The last eruption of Mount Vesuvius took place in 1944. It is still active, but is in a state of repose, according to the Vesuvius National Park website.

Iran plans to supply Russia with drones -US warns

0
The drones

Iran plans to supply Russia with potentially hundreds of drones for its war in Ukraine, some with combat capabilities, a US official has said. White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said that information received by the US suggested Iran was preparing to train Russian forces to use the drones. He added that it was unclear whether Iran had delivered them yet.

Drones have played an integral part in the war for both Ukraine and Russia.

Just last week, Ukraine appealed for donations of thousands of drones to aid its war efforts.

Both sides are using them to spot the enemy’s positions and then help direct and correct their own artillery fire on a target.

The Kremlin has said Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to Iran’s capital, Tehran, on 19 July. He is expected to meet Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan for peace talks on Syria. Mr Sullivan added that intelligence received by the US supported the view that Russia’s assault on eastern Ukraine was “coming at a cost to the sustainment of its own weapons”. He also observed that Iranian drones had previously been used by Yemen’s Houthi rebels to attack Saudi Arabia.

Feature: Aaooo, Wofa Yaw, Not Again! Matters Arising from the latest from Yaw Osafo Marfo (2)

0
Feature

Dear Wofa Yaw,

Even as you well know, the Asantes were known to have fought in a totally different struggle, which did not call for independence. The Asantes believed in “Prevention is better than Cure” and would not allow to be dominated by the British before they would fight for independence. This bold and wise stand is what has made Ethiopia what it is today.

Wofa, if all the Southern ethnic groups, including the Akyems, had rallied behind the Asantes and fought off the Europeans, perhaps governance in Ghana would have evolved from our traditional methods of ruling, to form a more stable form of government. Progress and development would have peaked so high that we would never be under such economic stress, kow-towing to the West and now to China, selling off our natural and mineral resources for the price of roasted plantain.

Our tradition and culture would have been preserved and held high as a national identity. Law and order and morality would be our hallmark. Bribery and corruption would never be in our lexicon.

Today, even as a sovereign state, whenever we wish to pass laws that will shape the nation, we are ordered by our colonial masters and we run to them to be told what we ought to do. This is one of the results of the colonialism we allowed ourselves to enter into. If we are independent now and yet cannot act without directives from the West, then why did we get out of colonialism, in the first place?

Wofa, you must remember the days of  Dr. K.A. Busia, when he took some European delegation to cocoa farms to see the stress cocoa farmers go through to produce that product which the Whites cannot just do without. Busia had a vision and it was to make the Whites to pay value for money.

Nkrumah, with all his toughness against the West, was brought down low into submission and allowed Kaiser to pay a third of the commercial and industrial rate for electricity for its Valco Aluminium plant.

Wofa, you remember when you decided to defend the very low rates western investors pay to us. You said it would be okay, if they initially took say 70% and as the years go by, it would reduce to 60%, 50%, 40% and from there we will be fully in control. Fully in control of what? When all through those years the foreign investor would have made profit a million times over then hand-over the business to us when it is in deplorable state, costly to operate and bring in no profit.

These were what the Asantes had intended preventing but the Southern ethnic groups did not see, to even understand. If only the Northern ethnic groups were prompted, they could have joined the Asantes and fought off the Whites.

Wofa, in fact, even though it was good we got ourselves out from colonial rule, when talking about fight for independence, please refrain from making it seem that the Asantes were irrelevant. What the Asantes all along thought was a bad idea and stood up against, Akyems and others thought otherwise and dove into it, only to get out, after realising too late that the water in the pool was rotten water. And you hit your chest that you have been in that pool and back.

Wofa, all the same you were wrong in stating that Eastern region was the only region that fought for our independence. Sir Nana Ofori Atta I, you mentioned did not fight in the struggle for independence. During his time, things were not that hot and he died in 1943. Things took nosedive from 1948 onwards.

Wofa, chiefs like Nii Kwabena Bone III, of Osu, Nana Kobina Nketsia, of  Essikado, Sekondi and the Asante man, Nana Baffour Osei Akoto were chiefs be highly acknowledged, in our struggle for independence.

Wofa, I have an uncomfortable feeling that some Akyems dislike Asantes and from things coming out from you and some other prominent Akyems, I am afraid, it looks like it. Please prove me wrong, but the reasons come from the following.

In 1978, some ex-Progress Party gurus met to form a political party to contest the 1979 General Elections. The meeting was split under these two issues, to form a political party around only those who were Progress Party members or to bring in other members of other ideologies who think the way of the Progress Party.

Victor Owusu, Appiah Menka, Jones Ofori Atta, B.J da Rocha, S.D. Dombo, Jatoe Kaleo, J.H. Mensah, Kwesi Lamptey, Osei Badu and R.A. Quarshie supported the former view. William Ofori Atta (Paa Willie), R.R. Amponsah, Osei Duah, Darkwa Dwamena and Yaw Manu held the latter view. In the end, Paa Willie and his group walked out of the meeting.

Appiah Menka delegated Rev. Sintim Misa and ex-President Akufo-Addo to go and intercede with Paa Willie to change his mind. When he was approached, he told them he was resigning from politics to devote his life to serving God as a pastor. The next thing he was leading the United National Convention into elections.

When Victor Owusu of the Popular Front Party was to go for a run-off with HillaLimann of the People’s National Party, the PFP went to see Paa Willie to make him bring his party to join PFP and help Victor Owusu win the elections. He turned his back on his own UP Tradition brother and went to the other side. The rest is history. In all this it is worth noting that an Akyem man and brother to Paa Willie, Jones Ofori Atta, father of Ken Ofori Atta, stood by his brother, the Asante man, Victor Owusu and stood on PFP ticket in Begoro and won the seat.

Wofa, Paa Willie would not let an Asante win the presidential elections if he was not going to be president. The result of this, is what set our country back and today, we are facing the effects of that selfish decision.

The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, had displayed his dislike and lack of respect to the Asantehene and Asanteman. Traditional norms demand that anyone who represented a senior traditional leader and holds his staff must be accorded the respect that would be accorded to that senior traditional leader.

At the royal funeral of the late Nana Wereko Apem II, chief of Amanokrom on February 4, 2006, the Tepahene, Nana Adusei Atwenewa Apem I, who was representing the Asantehene had his umbrella shot into, by the well-armed asafo group of the Okyenhene, who accompanied him to the function, because the Asante chief refused to rise up when the Okyenhene arrived. The shooting which took place for fifteen minutes had the umbrella completely destroyed.

On Saturday April 16, 2016, at the funeral of the late J.B. Danquah-Adu, at Akyem Tafo, the Asamponhene, Oheneba Kwadwo Afoduor represented the Asantehene and was seated when the Okyenhene arrived. He was confronted by the body guards of the Okyenhene and told to stand up as sign of respect, but since he was there representing the Asantehene, he never obliged. There was an attempt to remove his crown, and that started a scruffle. But for the timely intervention of the police, there would have been bloodshed.

Wofa, I can say that there are about 86% of Akyems who love Asantes and most likely there are about 90% of Asantes who love Akyems. After all, the Akyems are the in-laws of the Asantes, I am told. Lady Julia Osei Tutu, the beautiful wife of Asantehene Osei Tutu II, is an Akyem. Wofa, can you confirm? Can you also confirm the truth or otherwise, that some parents were dragged to a certain Sanhedrin to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against them, for allowing their daughter to go and marry an Asante?

Now, Wofa, I will like to recall something you said in a secret meeting with the NPP’s Eastern Regional Council of Elders, somewhere in 2015, which was captured on tape. You stated that even though almost 90% of Ghana’s resources are concentrated in mainly Akan-speaking regions of the country, it is people who come from regions without resources that are governing the country, and continued that Akans must rule Ghana, adding that“… In the world over, it is the group with most resources that rules and not the other way round…86.5% of resources in Ghana come from five regions: Brong Ahafo, Ashanti, Eastern, Western and Central…. You can’t say this openly.”

You do remember how you are attacked by most Ghanaians, including some Akans within the NPP. You also do remember that I was the only one who came to your defence based on principle and not based on the full content. That it was true that a bulk of Ghana’s resources do come from Akan areas and allow me to further explain that if all the regions were made to control their natural resources, development in Ghana would have been much better.

Wofa, you made those comments, when your bosom friend H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo was vying for the seat, as president. Even speaking in confidentiality to elders, and telling them what you said cannot be said in the open, the conversation leaked out.

Seven years on and we are back in the circle. The seat will be vacant soon and we need to replace the president.

The other day, some social media video had you quoted out of context, supporting Alan Kyerematen for the flag bearer slot. You came out strongly that you had never declared for Alan.

But Wofa, based on what you said in 2015, that all Akans must rally behind an Akan candidate and vote them to be president, so that Akans who control almost 90% of Ghana’s mineral and natural resources, must always rule the country, you do not seem to hold that position anymore and you have not yet told us why the change of mind.

Wofa, as far as Ghanaians know, there is still no commercial quantity of gold, diamond, bauxite reserves found in areas not occupied by Akans, that could be multiples times more than all the minerals in Akan lands. There is no oil discovered in non-Akan lands, in such large quantities that can rival the oil reserves in the Middle East. Also, there are no forests within the Northern areas of Ghana and the coastal Savannah of the Dangbes and Ewes that can surpass the Akan forests.

So, what has changed? Why this time in your opinion, an Akan man is not fit to rule this country? It is Alan, Afriyie Akoto both Akans against Bawumia a Mamprusi. And one is sure to contest against Mahama, a Gonja.

Wofa, please next time you want to confide in someone, just call me. I never and will never reveal what you tell me to anyone.

Be careful, Wofa, for I care for you. From the way you are going, one day who may make an off-the-cuff statement against the president and he will hear it and that will not be pleasant. Take care.

Come Saturday, the Danquah- Busia- Dombo (DBD) tradition will congregate at the Accra Sports Stadium to perform their four-year ritual of electing National Executives.

Decisions at this meeting will be the watershed to predict the fortunes of the tradition ‘breaking the 8’ mantra.
In conformity with the history, convention, customs and usages, we have always been electing leaders based on their loyalty, devotion, competence, consistency and political apprenticeship. It is in the light of this that I have been compelled to share my thoughts with follow “Krukudites” on the chairmanship race.
I want to state unequivocally that all the seven candidates that have applied for the chairmanship merit the position. However, like “Ahenfo Kyeneye, ebidedaebiakyi”, to wit, some are streets ahead of their contemporaries.

POLITICAL APPRENTICESHIP AND LEADERSHIP
It is a sad spectacle that people vouching for political positions usually tout their certificates, from First to PhD Degrees, or professional qualifications. They always fail to differentiate between “certificated” and “political” positions. Whilst possession of academic degrees may be necessary, it may not be sufficient for politics.
In politics, it is rather the level of apprenticeship that matters most since politics is a vocation. One needs to pass through the political mill to be equipped to deal with all unimaginable situations.

A cursory look of previous Chairmen of this tradition, limiting myself only to the 4th Republic, would suffice my argument. The longer the level of political apprenticeship, the greater the chance of leading us with, only few exceptions.
B. J Da Rocha of blessed memory became our first Chairman, having graduated as all-time Secretary General of Progress Party (PP), Secretary General of popular Front Party (PFP),and finally Chairman of New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The late Peter Ala Adjetey took over from Da Rocha, having carved his niche of leadership from Joe Appiah’s Justice Party as Secretary General.

Odoi Sykes is one of the exceptions to this rule. But even here, faithful disciples will agree with me that the pivotal role played by one of the greatest giants and his group for him cannot be discounted.
In 2002, Mr. Haruna Esseku, who had previously served as Central Regional Chairman became the National Chairman.
Mr. Mac Manu took over from Haruna Esseku, having had his leadership rudiments as the Western Regional Chairman.
Paul Afoko also comes within the class of the exceptions. However, any party faithful can testify to the various factors that played out during the Tamale congress.
Finally, Freddie Blay became Chairman, having served as First National Chairman, and subsequently as Acting Chairman who led us to win the 2016 elections, and was re-elected.
Ntim has been a common figure since he was elected as First National Vice Chairman from 2002-2006. He has never looked back on any activity of the party at all levels.

THE FIVE GREAT WITH LION HEART
In politics, one needs a lion heart to climb to the top. Within DBD tradition, five men are seen as gems for such mission.
Dr J. B Danquah, our foremost leader, never gave upin spite of the numerous downfalls, mostly orchestrated by the Convention Peoples Party (CPP),until his death. He contested both parliamentary seats of Abuakwa Central and North and lost. He again lost to Dr. Nkrumah during the Republican elections in 1960.
Professor Busia had to leave the country unceremoniously as opposition leader, had to abandon his professorship chair at Oxford to work tirelessly for the success of this tradition.

Under the 4th Republic, His Excellency Agyekum Kufuor had his fair share of the frustrations before succeeding in 2000. Per his biography, at a time, he was financially challenged, and the Concordia saga also compounded issues for him. But he never gave up.
Our current President, Nana Akufo-Addo, cannot recall his numerous ups and downs on his political journey. He had to go through tough battles to secure and retain the presidential slot of the party on numerous occasions, till he eventually won the 2016 general elections.
Stephen Ntim has never fought for the presidential slot before, but his determination to become the leader, having lost on four occasions, has always been unyielding.

THE SAD END OF A HAPPY CHAPTER
Come December 2024, the two most glamorous products of this tradition, namely His Excellencies Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo, will say goodbye to frontline politics.

Messers Owusu Agyeman, Addo Kufuor, Osafo-Maafo, J K Mensah, Kwadwo Mpiani and others will also be doing same because of their advanced ages.
The tradition will be greatly orphaned politically. The tradition is also mindful of the fact that a “non-tested presidential candidate” will lead it into the next elections.
It is against this backdrop that the mantle of chairpersonship should fall on a well-tested, tolerant, mature, and experienced person who had previously undertaken such national exercise for the party.
Do not forget how NDC was jettisoned five days to the December 2004 elections, which saw the world of their then General Secretary and the party torn apart.
This operation was spearheaded by marvelous Stephen Ntim. In hunting, we take the dog that goes by the name “Ayebida” and not “Nso Nyame Ye”.

THE UNIQUENESS OF NTIM

Any literature of  Ntim and NPP will require a book to do justice to the topic.
Ntim is not a “millionaire”, but always prepared to put what he has at the disposal of the party or fellow Kukrudites.
Who in NPP would not admit the “Ntim-mania scent”? Ntim’s undeniable imprints are not for fetched in all the 275 constituencies of Ghana. His intermittent donation of cars, supply of office stationery and other auxiliaries are there for all to see.
His philanthropic pedigree reminds this tradition of the great Stephen Krakue of blessed memory.

His selfless devotion to this tradition remains unchallenged. He had all the opportunities to have been a minister or parliamentarian, but because of his unalloyed love to render direct service to the party, he denied himself of all these.
Ntim has served the party in following capacities:

a) Member of National Campaign from 2004- date
b) National Co-ordinator of elections, Middle Belt, from 2012 to date
c) National Co-ordinator in charge of settler community’s project.
d) Member of National Council for Brong-Ahafo on two occasions
CONCLUSION

I take this opportunity to congratulate all brothers of the Kukrudite family who are contesting for the chairmanship position, especially for the maturity displayed so far. My humble appeal is that they form the ‘Adonten’ and ‘Kyidom’ unit around Ntim to ‘break the 8’.
The writer is a former MP for Kumawu and Chairman of National Research Committee, NPP.

Barcelona finally submit £42m bid for Robert Lewandowski

Barcelona Lewandowski looks frustrated

Barcelona have submitted a new €50million (£42m) bid for Robert Lewandowski as they look to finally seal a deal for Bayern Munich’s superstar striker.

The Polish star’s future has dominated the summer transfer window but it seems the saga may be edging towards a conclusion with the German giants demanding a deal be done by Saturday, according to reports.

Barcelona have so far been unable to match Bayern’s financial demands for the striker, who scored 50 goals in 46 appearances last season.

But, according to French outlet RMC Sport, Barcelona have made another bid worth £42m for the wantaway forward which is closer to Bayern’s demands.

Xavi is on the cusp of signing Leeds winger Raphinha for £56m and looks likely to tie down winger Ousmane Dembele to a new long-term deal at the Nou Camp.

But he sees Lewandowski as the final piece of his new look attack that he hopes will help Barcelona wrestle the LaLiga title back off Real Madrid and be more competitive in Europe next season.

Bayern Munich want him to stay, but they are not going to force him to do so and have set his price tag at 50 million euros.

Barcelona‘s intention is to spend less than this, but the Bundesliga champions do not seem willing to negotiate. Bayern Munich want to find a solution before Saturday, when the team will be presented to the fans.
