Ankobra West Bank PLC posts significant profit after tax

0
Ankobra West Rural Bank

The Ankobra West Rural Bank, with its headquarters at Esiama in the Ellembelle Municipality of the Western Region, is now known as the Ankobra West Bank PLC in compliance with the Companies Act.

TAX

Section 7 of the Companies Act  (Act 992) states that a company limited by shares  with more than 50 shareholders is a public company, and by virtue of section 21 (1) (b) of the Act shall have the inscription public company or its abbreviation, PLC, at the end of its name.

The Bank, at the end of 2021, had more than 5,140 shareholders, satisfying the Act making it eligible to carry the PLC inscription.

The Board Chairman, Doctor Frank Boateng, who announced this at the Bank’s 30th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Esiama, said: “Your Bank had more than 5,140 shareholders at the end of the period under review.

In compliance with the aforementioned directive, a resolution will be passed at this meeting to change [its] name to Ankobra Rural Bank PLC.”

Chairman Boateng told the shareholders that the Ankobra Rural Bank PLC profit after tax for the year under review stood at GH¢253,255.00, as compared to GH¢148,686.00 for the year 2020.

Additionally, operating income for the year under review also stood at GH¢4,239,400.00, as compared to GH¢3,097,301 for the previous year.

BOARD COMPOSITION

The Board Chairman further told the shareholders that two of the Bank’s most experienced Directors, Paul Minlah Amihere and Rev. Alfred Godbless, who had served for nineteen and seventeen years respectively, had to step down in compliance with the Bank of Ghana (BoG) directive at the end of 31st December 2021.

He said paragraph 75 of the BoG  Corporate Governance Directives states that a Director of an RCB who, prior to the coming into force of the directive, had served in that capacity for nine years or more shall not be eligible for another term upon the expiration of the current term in that RCB.

Director Boateng said, given that the Board of Directors recognised the importance of dividends, worked hard to chalk some significant gains in profit.

However, it was necessary to set some money aside to enable the Bank upgrade IT equipment, increase microfinance activities, and undertake feasibility studies for possible expansion.

In that direction, the Board would be unable to recommend the payment of dividends this year, as it is duty-bound to uphold prudential and internal guidelines from the regulators, including adequate provision for loan repayments resulting from the deterioration of some loans due to the insurgence of COVID-19.

That apart, it had also become increasingly necessary to build some reserves as a shield for any unexpected events. “We believe this will help make our Bank stronger, and to enable us pay dividends in the next year,” the Board Chairman told the shareholders.

DIRECTORS’ RENUMERATION

He said even though the Bank made significant gains, the Directors would not ask for an increase in the Boards fees, because of the same reasons adduced.

OUTLOOK

The most critical challenge of the Bank Chairman Boateng identified was the huge impairment of loans, which resulted in the high operating costs.

“As management takes steps to write off the system generated toxic assets, which has been reported to you at our previous meetings, they have also been mandated to take appropriate legal steps to recover our interests.

We assure you, however, that the issue of loan delinquency has been critically looked at, and in the future, this will not constitute a menace to your cherished Bank.”

PAID UP CAPITAL

According to him, paid up capital continued one of the most difficult areas of the Bank’s operations. He pointed out that over the course of 364 days management was only able to mobilise 929,500 shares, representing GH¢9,295.00 only.

The Board, he said, had noted this grave concern, which impedes the need to undertake possible branch expansion and had, therefore, re-equipped management to improve on its share mobilisation strategies.

Four ambassadors present letters of credence to President Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Yesterday, four ambassadors representing their individual nations took turns to visit Jubilee House, the seat of Ghana’s Presidency, to handover their credentials per diplomatic etiquette.

The envoys were from Australia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Switzerland and Iran.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was available to receive each of the envoys at brief separate meetings, fused with little remarks about both countries.

DR CONGO

The Ambassador for the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madam Jeannette Njuma Nyakeru, began her remark by acknowledging and commending Ghana’s hospitality. She continued by extending the warm greetings of her president and the country to President Akufo-Addo and Ghana.

She said her President would appreciate Ghana’s support in terms of security, especially as the latter represents the continent on the United Nations Security Council.

Further, Mad Nyakeru informed President Akufo-Addo that her President requested for a review of the rather ineffective bilateral relations between the two countries.

In his response, President Akufo-Addo congratulated the Ambassador on her appointment while welcoming her to Ghana. He recalled the longstanding relationship dating back to the first President of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, at which time Ghanaian troops were dispatched to Congo, but relations had since become stalled.

President Akufo-Addo emphasised that it is important for the relationship to be reviewed and expressed hope that the presence of the Ambassador would bridge the gap.

AUSTRALIA

The Australian High Commission to Ghana, Mrs. Bernice Owen-Jones, addressing President Akufo-Addo on security, indicated that both countries could do more to address present challenges, like counter-terrorism.

She told President Akufo-Addo that mining has been the strong pillar behind the bilateral engagement of the two countries.

According to her, Australia is well versed in mining, adding that there is some $40 billion worth of investment by Australian mining companies in the sub-region, including Ghana.

Having outlined other areas her country has impacted, such as in education, the Ambassador continued that more could be done elsewhere.

On that score, she mentioned closer business-to-business and university-to-university links between her country and Ghana.

“Your Excellency, the Australian government is committed to working with your government to make the already strong relationship stronger,” she assured, and added that as the High Commissioner it would be an honour for her.

President Akufo-Addo congratulated her on the appointment. He recalled the relationship that has existed between Ghana and Australia.

He opined that it was good that the ambassador was in Ghana, especially as a member of the commonwealth.

President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the investment of Australia in the extraction sector of Ghana. He noted that there are about 26 Australian mining companies listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, describing it as impressive.

Like the High Commissioner, President Akufo-Addo was also positive that the two countries could foster stronger relationships, and urged her to use her period in Ghana to the benefit of both countries.

SWITZERLAND

Madam Simone Giger, Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, addressed what she termed as excellent bilateral relations between both nations and hoped to intensify it.

The Ambassador said Ghana and Switzerland have strong development cooperation and expressed conviction that “everything that we do is very much in line with the vision of Ghana Beyond Aid.”

The focus of her country in Ghana, she indicated, is to develop the local private sector, to diversify the economy and to create jobs. She noted that her country, like others, acknowledges Ghana as the economic lioness on the continent. She touched on other areas of co-operation, including politics, education and climate change.

In his response, President Akufo-Addo congratulated her on her appointment and recalled the good relations between the two countries, that dates back to pre-independence, a relationship he said had been beneficial to both countries.

It was the hope of President Akufo-Addo that, through her time as Ambassador, Madam Simone Giger would work with the government to boost relations.

He noted the investment of Swiss companies in Ghana, but indicated that “we are looking forward to more economic intercourse” between the two countries.

IRAN

The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Bijan Gerami Nazoksara, recalled that Ghana-Iran relations started in the 1980s and has since been very good.

He touched on the policies of the government, including the One District, One Factory and Planting for Food and Jobs, while also sharing the story of Iran.

President Akufo-Addo congratulated him and acknowledged the impact of Iran in the areas of health and education in the country.

According to President Akufo-Addo, Ghana’s concern about the peaceful use of nuclear energy is very high. President Akufo-Addo consoled him on the issues confronting his country and assured him of Ghana’s support.

Dancehall Artiste, Shatta Wale has warned critics ahead of the release of his yet-to-be-released Gift of God (GOG) album.

Akufo-Addo lobbied for Global Citizen Festival to be held in Ghana; Okraku Mantey

0
Mark Okraku-Mantey, Deputy Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture, Mark Oktaku Mantey has revealed how President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo lobbied for the Global Citizen Festival to be organized in Accra.

He said the festival organisers initially wanted to hold it Nigeria, however, the President stepped in to lobby for it to come to Ghana.

Ghana was picked by the organizers partly because President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had showed interest in having it take place in Ghana.

In an interview on Hitz FM which was monitored by The Chronicle, the Deputy Minister mentioned that the concert was part of efforts aimed at marketing Ghana’s tourism, “and so, President Akufo-Addo showed interest, originally Global Citizen, they wanted to go to Nigeria, for some good reasons, we were the ones who won,” he said.

The event made headlines when the President was booed by a section of the crowd as he arrived on stage to deliver his welcome address.

This has had the governing administration reacting to it. According to a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Communications, Ernest Owusu Bempah Bonsu, the NDCs perpetuated the orchestration of heckling of the president for political scores.

Mr. Owusu Bempah said it was disgraceful for the NDC to organize its supporters to go and shout down the President in the manner it happened.

“Truly, politicians don’t expect to be popular all the time. Getting on with running the country is a job where you have to take difficult decisions a lot of the time. There’s nothing wrong if President Akufo-Addo goes to an event and receives cold reception. That’s a normal occurrence.

“But then, to allow politics to take center stage at such an event and single out the President unfairly for political point scoring raises serious concerns. To put it more bluntly, it is pure evil and utter disgrace for the NDC to organize its supporters to go and shout down at the President the manner it happened,” he said.

… And, there was a Funeral…

When a Lawyer makes an application in court, it can either be MOTION ON NOTICE, that is to say an application telling the other party that you want the court to grant a relief, which he may or may not oppose, or, MOTION EX PARTE, which is an application without notice to the other party.

To this, let me add my own: we have DEATH EX PARTE and DEATH ON NOTICE. Death is on Notice when you are sick in hospital or at home for a long time, and your condition is getting worse by the day. My father-in-law’s daughter’s cousin, a very big wig in the Ministry of Education, very recently passed away into eternity after a hectic battle with sickness for three months. We will bury her on November 5, 2022, at Aburi.

However, DEATH EX PARTE is when all of a sudden, absolutely without any notice whatsoever, a person suddenly drops dead, either through sleep or a sudden bout of sickness, heart failure, and so on.

According to the late famous Lawyer, E.D. Kumi, in this our part of the world, where the average life expectancy is about 60 years, anybody who clocks 60 should be on notice that you are on your way home!!!

And so I don’t think anybody, in this world, was surprised to hear in the news that Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had received a writ of summons to appear before Almighty God at the ripe old age of 96 years!!!!

The good aspect of Death on Notice is that it puts everybody on hold, on tenterhooks, planning silently as to how the funeral should be organised, if and when the inevitable happens.

According to history, the greatest ever funeral in human memory was the funeral of ALEXANDER THE GREAT, who was buried by a 1,000 Army man strong catafalque guard that snaked across Asia with the corpse, from Babylon to its final resting place – is it Alexandria???

Watching the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on television, I remembered so well what my good friend, Hon Kofi Attoh, then Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho Central, told me in Parliament one day – he told me, surprisingly, that he was not going to the Independence Square for the swearing in ceremony of the new President, J.A. Kufuor – why Kofi?

“But Effah, it is better and clearer to watch proceedings on television – if you are there, your line of vision is limited, but at home, or in the office, on TV the cameras bring you a vivid coverage of everything…

How so true!!!

There on the TV screen was President Joe Bidden arriving in the special US President car “The Beast” which President George Bush and President Barrack Obama brought to Ghana during their respective state visits.

I hear some foreign sympathisers were driven in a bus to the place where the casket was laid, and there was the new Monarch, King Charles III, and all the eight grand children of the fallen Monarch.

Interesting – she was not buried in a cemetery or a Royal Mausoleum or in a vault, but INSIDE St George Chapel at Windsor Castle – beside her husband, Philip, her father, mother, and sister… that is British Royalty for you.

But, permit me to ask – when our President, Professor John Atta Mills, died, the British Monarch did not attend his funeral in Accra, neither did the British Premier at the time. So, why did we lower all flags in Ghana at half mast for the death of the Head of State of another country for seven days!!!

Interestingly – I did not see the Chinese leader, Xi Zinping, and the Russian Warlord – Vladimir Putin. Of course, the Ukraine leader, in his accustomed green T-shirt, was busily creating restless problems at his doorsteps!!!!

The world is really very interesting. Nothing changes, except the players – a long Kaleidoscope football match…

Court sacks Aliero as PDP senatorial candidate

0
Nigerian courts

The Federal High Court in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, on Tuesday, voided the election of a former Governor of Kebbi State, Adamu Aleiro, as the senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Kebbi Central District.

The trial judge, Babagana Ashigar, ruled in favour of Haruna Sa’idu who argued that he is the bona fide senatorial candidate of the PDP for the district.

Mr Saidu sued Mr Aliero, the incumbent senator of the district, the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a fresh primary for the Kebbi Central Senatorial District. He argued that the fresh primary contravened the Electoral Act 2022.

Mr Sa’idu argued that he is alive, and did not withdraw from the contest. He claimed that his name was unlawfully substituted with that of Mr Aliero, who defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP after a primary election was conducted.

Mr Asghigar observed that when the first primary for the Kebbi Central was held, Mr Aleiro was in the APC.

He ruled that based on exhibits 2,21,23,24 tendered before the Court, Mr Sa’idu participated in the first primary where he was elected as the candidate having scored the highest votes while the first defendant, Mr Aliero, was still at the ruling party.

“Since the first primary election was not challenged by the 1st defendant, it is in my humble view that the first primary election for Kebbi Central Senatorial district remained authentic. I, therefore, upheld all the prayers of the plaintiff, and the judge ruled.

Responding to the judgement, counsel to Mr Aliero, Aliyu Hassan, said his client will study the judgement before taking the next line of action.

Also, counsel to Mr Sa’idu, Sule Usman, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) said the judgement, is for the good of the people of Kebbi Central District who now know who the authentic candidate of the PDP is.

Terrorists dominate Nigeria, Niger border communities –Maradi governor

0
Governors Aboubacar

The Governor of Niger Republic’s Maradi, Schiabou Aboubacar, has raised the alarm of terrorist activities in communities in his country and Nigeria.

Aboubacar said the insurgents were causing people sleeplessness, confirming fears that terror groups had taken over some villages in northern parts of Nigeria.

The governor spoke on Tuesday at a high-level meeting, which was held in Katsina to discuss ways to tackle insecurity in the region.

The security parley had in attendance the Governors of Katsina – Aminu Masari, Sokoto – Aminu Tambuwal, Zamfara – Bello Matawalle, and Kebbi – Atiku Bagudu.

Aboubacar, who convened the gathering, stressed that solutions were urgently required in order to defeat the terrorists.

“We are in serious trouble in this region. Everyone knows our problems are terrorists who have denied us sleep.

“Communities living around Sokoto, Zamfara and Katsina that have borders with Niger Republic hardly sleep in their communities.

“Participants in this meeting are one family; hence, we deem it necessary to sort ourselves out to see how we can tackle the insecurity menace.

“Each state is doing its best in addressing the security challenges, but it’s not enough. We have to come together to see how we can address the problem”, NAN quoted him saying.

Earlier this month, Aboubacar and the governors signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Niger Republic on the best approach to address the problem.

The United Nations (UN) estimates that in localities around the Lake Chad, over 3.2 million people are displaced.

The figure includes more than 2.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in north-eastern Nigeria, and 1 million in Cameroon, Chad and Niger.
