0
Andrews Kwarteng Amaning, Board chairman - Nwabiagya Rural Bank

The Nwabiagya Rural Bank Net Interest Income increased in the face of economic challenges from GH¢9,089,122 in 2020 to GH¢11,178,784 in 2021, representing an increase of 3.96%, while commissions fees increased by 2.2%, from GH¢4,715,533 in 2020 to GH¢4,819,935 in 2021.

Total operating income recorded an amount of GH¢3,247,826, representing 20.23%, from GH¢16,051,597 in 2020 to GH¢19,299,423 in 2021.

Mr. Andrew Kwarteng Amaning, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank, who disclosed this at the 34th Annual General Meeting, stated that the Nwabiagya Rural Bank was committed to the principles of good corporate governance, in line with the dictates of the Corporate Governance Directive for Rural Community Banks.

According to him, the Board intensified its oversight responsibilities over the activities of the Bank in the year under review, and noted that the diverse expertise of Directors had made it possible for the Board to put effective measures to bear on its operations, and had a deep understanding of the requirements of oversight which was expected to increase shareholder value.

Mr. Amaning stated that the 2021 Financial Year was characterized by turbulent economic uncertainties, sharp fluctuations in the economic fundamentals, and shortages, all mainly a result of the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the economic development created anxieties for both individuals and institutions, and that the Bank was not exceptional, with its ability to recover GH¢3,300,703 in interest from funds that were locked up with Fund Managers significantly affected the financial results of the Bank for the year under review.

He reiterated that the Bank is poised to embrace all economic opportunities to ensure improved performance in the future, adding that pragmatic efforts have been put in place with the aim of providing more robust customer- care banking solutions, as they recognized that, successful recovery of hardcore loans, closely monitoring of top management performance target and the remaining locked-up funds with Managers will give a further boost to the Bank’s performance.

The Board Chairman underscored that, the economic environment in which the Bank performed during the 2021 fiscal year recorded some key indicators, some of which had impacted on the Bank’s performance during the fiscal year, while increase inflation resulted in increase in the operational cost, decrease in Treasury bill rate reduced the expected investment income of the Bank during the period under review.

He said the banking sector’s performance remained strong in 2021 and that available data showed sustained growth in total deposits and investments.

The industry’s assets, he said, expanded on the back of the continued increase in total deposits during 2021, while credit growth remained sluggish because of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Late Baffuor Osei Akoto

The family of late Statesman, Nana Baffuor Osei Akoto, who was a Senior Linguist of the Golden Stool, has pleaded with President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, to name the Kumasi Airport after their father and relative for his contribution in the struggle of the fundamental human rights and freedom towards democracy in the country.

Dr. Ernest Owusu Dapaah, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Humanities and Social Sciences, delivering a speech at the public lecture to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Baffuor Osei Akoto Lectures, explained that he (Baffuor Akoto) played an active role in the turbulent days of our democracy, and that the political role he play must be appreciated.

According to him, Baffuor Akoto was a human rights activist of excellence and stood against human rights abuse.

He noted that the young ones of less than 30 years may under-rate the freedom and liberty we are enjoying which, he said, came from a long struggle for which the late Baffuor Akoto could not be left out.

He disclosed that the focus of the lecture was about Baffuor Osei Akoto and seven others who were arrested and detained without trial by the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) government.

Dr. Ernest Owusu Dapaah delivering a lecture

Dr. Dappah stated that Baffuor Osei Akoto was a Poet, Linguist, politician, philanthropist and a business mogul who fought for Ashanti as the father of National Liberation Movement (NLM) from which  the current ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) sprang out.

Mrs. Rita Akoto, daughter of the late Senior Linguist, described her father as a man of courage and boldness.

She said their father was a man you could not dislike, but unfortunately his wisdom was ignored only to be appreciated after his death.

The Baffuor Akoto Foundation (BAF) was launched by Baffuor Adusei Poku, the Akyempenhene of Kumasi, to champion the legacy of the Ashanti Senior Linguist and politician, Baffuor Osei Akoto.

Nanabanyin urges chiefs to adopt late Offinsomanhene’s stance on galamsey

Nana Nanabanyin Ninsin-Imbeah II

Nana Nanabanyin Queesy Ninsin-Imbeah II, Ex-Nyimfahen of the Mfantseman Council in Ashanti has urged chiefs to take a cue from the stand of the late Offinsomanhene, Nana Wiafe Akenten III against illegal mining activities in their areas.

Expressing his concerns in a chat with The Chronicle in Kumasi, the ex-chief said traditional rulers and opinion leaders in Ashanti region in particular, have a collective responsibility to help fight the menace of galamsey, in seeking the welfare of their subjects.

This role is paramount to compliment the efforts of the government in fighting the canker.

“If the late Nana Wiafe Akenten III, Offinsomanhene was able to stop galamseyers from his Traditional Area,  why can’t colleague chiefs do same in the interest of mother Ghana and their subjects”, the ex-chief queried.

According to him, it is wrong for any chief to look on unconcerned for galamseyers (illegal miners) to destroy water bodies and degrade the land within their jurisdiction and claim that they are not involved in the practice.

Nana Nanabanyin Ninsin-Imbeah II, who is the National Chairman of the Ghana Highway Authority Retired Staff Association (GHARSA) has, therefore, called on chiefs and other traditional leaders to sit up and help wage a relentless war against galamsey within their traditional areas and effectively help stop the menace of galamsey activity in the country.

In the same way, chiefs would not allow their subjects to be attacked by terrorists, traditional leaders must also be seen to champion the welfare and interest of their subjects, hence the need to resolve and not to allow illegal miners into their jurisdiction to destroy water bodies and the land, at the expense of the livelihood of their subjects.

“The time for chiefs to prove their non-complicity in illegal mining is now”, Nanabanyin Ninsin-Imbeah dared traditional rulers.

He said chiefs must take a strong position against illegal mining and save lives. He also advised the chiefs of the Offinso Traditional area not to soften the stance of their late paramount chief against galamsey and continue to protect water bodies and lands so as to consolidate the gains so far.

He said they should work to maintain Offinso Traditional area as a point of reference for the fight against galamsey.

Nana Ninsin-Imbeah cautioned that if they allow the gains to erode away they would be subjecting themselves to public ridicule and exposure.

The Managing Director of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel D.M Mahama says the company has successfully installed over nine thousand prepaid meters in the Krobo District.

The company targets a total installation of 20,000 prepaid meters in the two Krobo areas – Yilo and Manya – and Mr Mahama expressed the hope that the fruitful working relationship the company is enjoying with the chiefs and opinion leaders of the two areas would continue to linger for the successful completion of the exercise.

At a brief media engagement at Somanya, the Krobo District office of the ECG, Samuel Dubik Masubir Mahama expressed delight that over 9,000 residents willingly welcomed the installation of the prepaid meters, despite the confrontations that almost marred the exercise.

“And we are glad to enjoy such a cordial relationship with the people, especially when the ECG is always ready to provide the best service to all of its customers. The installation of prepaid meters is a national assignment and we’re gradually replacing all post-paid meters with prepaid meters.

We will continue to engage the people to understand and accept the need to have prepaid meters,” Mr Mahama explained.

Though he could not readily mention some of the areas where the 9,000 prepaid meters had successfully been installed, Mr Mahama said that vending stations are in all the areas where the meters had been installed “so there is no cause for worry.”

Briefly, on the involvement of the military in the installation exercise in the two Krobo areas, Samuel Dubik Masubir Mahama explained that the ECG requested the 49 Engineering Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces to augment the former’s staff strength “and the personnel, who are trained electricians too, are only providing the needed assistance to the ECG to enable us to achieve our target of installing about 20,000 prepaid meters in the Krobo District within a scheduled period.”

He advised customers to have control over their usage of electricity to save some money for other needs.”Switch off electrical gadgets you don’t need to conserve energy,” he concluded.

Bono REGSEC gives herdsmen one-week ultimatum

Justina Owusu Banahene ,Bono Minister

The Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has directed herdsmen whose cattle are grazing around local and forest fringe communities in the region to move their animals away.

It has, therefore, given the herdsmen a one-week-ultimatum to do so, and said the Council had set up a taskforce that would comb the areas, shoot and kill any cattle that would be sighted in the communities.

The REGSEC took the decision after a meeting held in Sunyani in connection with the killing of some cattle at Adoe, a farming community in the Sunyani West Municipality of the region.

Some irate youth of Adoe went on a rampage recently and killed several cattle which were causing extensive destruction to their farms and food produce.

But, the Security Council said it had since arrested and placed in custody one suspect, Ernest Kwaku Adjei, who claimed ownership of more than 2,000 cattle at Adoe, pending police investigations.

Briefing on the outcome of the REGSEC meeting in Sunyani, Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, Bono Regional Minister and Chairperson of the REGSEC, said it was unacceptable for the herdsmen to use their animals to graze and destroy people’s properties and the forest reserves.

She said it was also unlawful for owners to allow their animals to loiter in towns, and asked them to confine or lose their stray animals.

Mad Owusu-Banahene also directed the police to investigate the circumstances that led to the killing of the cattle at Adoe and submit their report to the REGSEC.

The Assembly members and their DCE listening to the lead assessor

The Dormaa East District Assembly in the Bono Region has been scored 97 percent after it was assessed under the District Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT).

This came to light when a team of assessors, in a two-day conference, assessed the Assembly’s 2021 annual performance under the DPAT.

The District Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT) was introduced a few years ago by the Government of Ghana (GoG) and supported by its development partners to ensure efficiency in the service delivery of the various Metropolitan, Municipal Districts Assemblys (MMDAs).

The District Performance Assessment Tool is an operative mechanism on the wings of a Performance Based Grant System (PBGS) where MMDAs are financially rewarded to take care of their businesses upon complying to and performing well in some indicators functional to them.

Dormaa East District Assembly having performed satisfactorily with the 97% total mark qualifies for a financial reward, enough to implement its Medium Term Development Plans (MTDPs) as well as its Annual Action Plan (AAPs) which would go a long way to affect its citizens positively.

At the close of the conference, the DPAT Team Leader, Mr. Asaah Sumaila Mohammed, who announced the marks awarded to the District, read the thematic areas and the respective marks accorded.

He commended the assembly for their strengths but was quick to caution them to take a second look at their expenditure.

He also called for close monitoring of the education sector of the district.

The team members in turn shared pieces of advice with management on budget, records keeping among others with a call on the need to organise workshops and refresher courses for staff to sharpen them.

On his part, the District Chief Executive of the area, Mr. Emmanuel Kofi Agyeman expressed his appreciation to the team for their professional conduct and for coming.

He was optimistic that the district would do very well following the recommendation given by the team.

He applauded the staff for their contribution towards the success chalked and advised them to aspire for the ultimate marks.

SICUT ERAT IN PRINCIPIO (SEIP) SERIES (1)

Opinion

NDC AGENDA: TV 3 AGENDA

One of the powerful prayers of glorifying God, in the Holy Catholic Church, is the Glory be, which in Latin, is prayed “Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto, Sicut Erat In Principio, Et Nunc, Et Semper, Et In Saecula Saeculorum, Amen.” In English “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning it is now and ever shall be, World without end, Amen.”

In what I will entitled, SEIP series, from Sicut EratIn Principio meaning As It Was In The Beginning, I begin a series of Opinions, to draw Ghanaians attention to the modus operandi of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in which it will always convince Ghanaians about how anti-Ghanaian the NPP government and party are, only to win sympathy and get re-elected to come and continue from where they ended, milking the country dry,in the most corrupt manners.

Ghanaians should not forget too soon, when in 2007/2008, in the era ofour economic boom, the NDC lied big time bylabelling the J.A. Kufuor Administration, as a very corrupt one. With fake bank statements of ministers of stateshowing huge balances to indicate stealing from the public purse, to lying about a ship loaded with gold belonging to NPP ministers that sunk on high seas, Ghanaians decided to reject the NPP in 2008.

These series will in due course, come out with how the NDC hit the ground running in the area of corruption and brought down to zero, all the gains Kufuor made.

I will beginby throwing light on journalists and media houses and I start with TV 3.

TV 3, was established in 1997, under the NDC era of J.J. Rawlings, by a Malaysian company, Sistem Televisyen Malasia Berhad. In 2011, it was taken over by a private Ghanaian company, Media General Ghana Ltd, owned by NDC gurus. One name being speculated, here, is Totobi Quakyi.

TV 3 is a privately owned media house in Ghana. Among the most watched free-air-television, TV 3 is very popular for its showing of Mexican telenovelas, Korean series and foreign movies.

Ghanaians would remember that where TV 3 is currently located was the site and offices of a state institution, Ghana Films. If TV 3 is a private company, then how much did it pay for that property? I do not remember Ghana Films put under divestiture, but, with the NDC, anything can be possible.

The Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and NDC would always proclaim that they are ordained to lead this country and are there to alleviate poverty. Yet, instead of using the station to promote Ghanaian based movies, i.e., Kumawood, it chooses to air Mexican telenovelas, Korean and Indian movies. To further kill the interest in Ghanaian movies, TV 3 as effectively adopted the Akan Twi as voice-over for these foreign movies.

TV 3, chooses to use Ghana’s scarce foreign reserves, to import into this country, movies that have different and conflicting cultures from ours. Because the importation of these foreign movies seriously affects our currency, the cedi. The cedi will go chasing the dollar. And who is the winner? The shareholders, of course.

Today, by the acts of TV 3, the Ghanaian youth is encouraged to rebel against our very decent cultures which aim at the good upbringing and responsible humanity of the Ghanaian.

Speculations that TV 3 indeed belong to some NDC members can be justified by this media house’s partisan approach to national issues and its persistent attacks on NPP governments.

The PNDC gate-crashed into Ghana’spolitical scene in 1981 with the clarion call for all Ghanaians to patronize Ghanaian products, even though the NDC came out in 1997 and placed a ban on some made-in-Ghana goods and services.

During that era, where a new version of socialism was introduced and the West, labelled as criminals, we were told that we should “Grow What We Eat, And Eat What We Grow!”Konkonte was elevated and placed on the table of kings and Rawlings went on to warn those who discredited“tie-and-dye” wear, when the people of Kumasi labelled it “Adjoa Yankey” after that song in which someone was being encouraged not to give up on her state of poverty.

Hope that Ghanaians would soon be patronising Ghana, collapsed, when TV 3, the media house owned by the NDC, could come out on prime time to discredit, a Ghanaian product, during the J.A. Kufuor administration. Agric minister, Major Courage Quashigah (Rtd), went all out to promote local rice, for its richness in nutrients and palatability. Yet, TV 3, used its prime time, to educate its viewers about how bad Ghanaian rice was.It selected and interviewed some people in the Odor Rice area who all discredited and condemned our local rice.

Today, TV 3 uses its prime-time programmes to attack everything NPP, even if the government comes out with policies and activities that would benefit Ghanaians, especially the poor and down trodden.

It is rather very sickening how people parading the corridors of TV 3 and call themselves journalists would always stick to one side of the story, denying viewers the opportunity to judge things for themselves.

Sicut Erat In Principio, the NDC agenda continues and together with some of the media houses, they seek to the downfall of Ghana.

Sister Derby and her boyfriend

Ghanaian model and style creator, Deborah Osei Bonsu, also known as Sister Derby, has disclosed that she’s not in hurry to marry or have children.

Sister Derby’s failed relationships are known to the public. She said she does not keep her relationship affair from the public.

In an interview on Ameyaw TV, she indicated that she is content with her current relationship adding that she is not desperate for marriage.

“I am not desperate for marriage at all. If I don’t get married or have children, I am still happy and fine with myself. I don’t feel like it is the end of the world because of it, I have always been independent.

“I’m not rushing for marriage. Will it bring me 5 million dollars?” she asked.
Derby also advised young women to be self-assured and not give in to social pressures to marry and end up in abusive marriages.

“Don’t force yourself into marriage because of societal pressures. Make sure that’s the right partner for you, understand each, have good communication, and enjoy each other’s company,” she noted.

She explained why she always flaunts her new boyfriend in public.
She said she does not see the point in hiding him if he is serious and makes her comfortable.

“I am the kind of person that likes to be free and not stressed. Hiding, pretending, and calculating are very stressful to me.

But if I am comfortable and the person is showing signs of seriousness why should I be hiding? Why should I care about society? everybody goes through relationships and breakups.

“The truth is if you’re comfortable with someone and enjoy their company then you want to be around them all the time. My partner enjoys my company and so do I,” she stressed.
