Ho Recycling and Compost plant ready in December

The Dambai Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant

The ultramodern Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP), situated in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region, will be ready for use by the end of the year.

The Medical Waste Treatment facility at Akrofu Agorve, Ho

It is part of the IRECOP projects being established across the country by the Jospong Group of Companies, in collaboration with the Government of Ghana, under the Sanitation Levy Fund. According to the Head of Medical Waste, Ing. Senam Tenge, the plant was 85 percent complete.

He revealed this to the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) which paid a visit to the plant being constructed at Akrofu Agorve near Ho.

Leading journalists to tour the facility, Ing. Tenge noted that the plant would work in such a way that all waste brought there would be converted into reusable products.

He noted that organic waste would be converted into fertilisers for onward distribution to farmers, while inorganic waste such as plastics, metals and leathers would be converted into other re-usables. “Everything brought here will be converted into reusable goods,” he said.

He noted that, currently, waste materials were collected and transported to the final disposal site without any value addition.

“With this plant in place, what we will be doing is that when the waste is generated from the various sites, be the market place, school, the waste is brought to this site, sorted, recycled and used to produce other items.”

Talking about the number of jobs it would create for the youth of Ho and the Volta Region, Mr. Tenge said the plant was expected to create direct employment for 100 persons, while indirect job creation was estimated to be 500.

“So you realise that this facility here, established in Ho, is really going to change the employment status of the youth in this region,” Mr. Tenge observed.

Speaking about safety issues, Ing. Tenge said, based on international practices, plants of this nature were supposed to be established at the outskirt of a town, in order to free the community from any harmful emissions, and that was what informed the establishment of the plant at the outskirt of Akrofu Agorve.

“At the international level, waste processing sites must be located at the outskirts of town and city because of the nature of operation that happens here.

“This site has been allocated to us so that the operation that is done here will not have any negative environmental impact on the people in the community.” He, however, noted that the nature of their machines emit low pollutants, and gave an assurance that the community was safe.

He also noted that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was also there to ensure that their operations did not affect anyone.

Meanwhile, a Medical Waste Treatment facility, which is situated at the same site, is near completion and would soon start operations.

The facility will also see to the treatment and recycling of medical waste from hospitals and any other facility that produce medical waste.

M.anifest

Officially known as Kwame Amtepee Tsikata, Rapper M.anifest has shared that a perfect song that fits the current state of the ‘Cedi’ nis Kelvynboy’s ‘Down Flat’.

‘Down Flat’ is an international hit by Ghanaian singer Kelvynboy which was released earlier 2022. A remix for it was released in September featuring Stefflon Don and Tekno.

In the song, Kelvynboy sings about how helplessly he has fallen in love. The feeling is so intense, he sings, “I can’t comport myself, I can’t. I fall for you down flat.”

It is this lyric that, in jest, M.anifest is alluding to in his tweet.

He initially tweeted: “If the cedi were a playlist what songs would be on it?”

The ‘Suffer’ hitmaker responded to it himself, after fans had had their go at it, with another tweet: “Down flat.”

Ghana’s annual inflation rate accelerated to 37.2 per cent in September of 2022, for the 16th straight month from 33.9% in August.

The Ghana cedi is currently, according to Bloomberg, the worst performing currency in the world.

In Accra, the capital of Ghana, you need 12 cedis to obtain 1 dollar in a forex bureau.

Meanwhile, M.anifest’s latest project is an album titled ‘MTTD: Madina To the Universe’.

Why Shatta Wale’s ‘GoG’ album has delayed

Shatta Wale

Shatta Wale advertised October 17, 2022 as the release of his much-anticipated Gift of God (GoG) album.

He made this announcement as early as August this year whilst performing at the ‘SummerStage’ event in New York City. The reggae/dancehall star excited the audience when he informed them that they were first to know when the album would be out.

The album was to be his birthday present to his fans but he (Shatta Wale) has disappointed fans by delaying the release. Rather, a song, ‘Cash Out’purported to be an official single from the project was released on Sunday, October 16.

Shatta Wale has not offered an official explanation for this delay but in an interview on Accra-based Joy FM which was monitored by The Chronicle, he said all that has been said about the album so far was part of a marketing effort to whip up anticipation.

“This is where everybody around should give me a round of applause for keeping people talking for three years about ‘GoG’. That’s a whole marketing strategy,” the ‘On God’ hitmaker drew applause from the in-studio audience.

“It’s so beautiful that everyone is talking about it,” the Shatta Movement (SM) boss remarked and assured: “There is a ‘GoG’ album.”

According to the multiple award-winning musician and record producer who celebrated his 38th birth anniversary yesterday, the LP would have been out in the first year it was announced but for marketing concerns and logistics.

“Due to this, we had to fix some strategies and plans, you know and [find out] how to make people talk. We’ve already informed the fans. I’ve done this for three years,” he explained.

“When it comes, everybody should embrace it,” he added and boasted: “Because in the history of Ghana, I don’t know any artiste who has kept an album for three years and still had people talk about it for three years.”

He emphasised the uniqueness of his ploy and his brand resilience by adding should a different artiste “try this thing, you won’t [be engaged to] play a show(s) again in your life.”

Naira may devalue by 20% in 2023 -BoA

0
Naira may devalue

Nigeria’s local currency unit is set to weaken further next year as its current exchange rate to the dollar is well above fair value, according to Bank of America.

According to a report by Bloomberg, economist Tatonga Rusike said in a note to clients on Tuesday that, “three indicators, the widely-used black-market rate, the central bank’s real effective exchange rate, and our own currency fair value analysis shows the naira is 20 per cent overvalued.

“We see scope for it to weaken by an equivalent amount over the next six-nine months, taking it to as high as 520 per USD.”

While the naira will come under increasing pressure “due to limited government external borrowing,” devaluation is unlikely to happen until after the February 2023 presidential elections, the bank said.

Africa’s largest economy operates a multiple exchange regime dominated by a tightly controlled official exchange rate and a parallel market where the currency is freely traded.

The naira exchanged at 440.95 to the dollar in the official spot while parallel rate went up to N740, according to the bureau de change operators.

The official rate has depreciated by less than 10 per cent since December 2021 even as the parallel rate is down by nearly a third within the same period, widening the gap to almost 70 per cent, BofA analysis show.

Buhari directs health ministry to track utilisation of funds

0
President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday directed the ministry of health to track the disbursement and utilisation of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

Mr Buhari issued the directive at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Ministerial Performance Review Retreat in Abuja.

According to a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, the president said the health ministry should put in a monitoring and evaluation framework and work in collaboration with relevant agencies to achieve this task.

BHCPF

The federal government established the BHCPF in 2014, under Section 11 of the National Health Act; to provide funding to improve access to primary health care.

It was designed to be financed from not less than one per cent of the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) of the federal government and other sources including donors’ contributions.

The Fund provides a Basic Minimum Package of Health Services (BMPHS) aimed at increasing the fiscal space for health, strengthening the national health system, particularly at the PHC level, and ensuring access to healthcare for all.

Although it was established in 2014, the actual implementation of the law, including the release of funds, did not commence until 2018.

Retreat

President Buhari, who described the two-day retreat as time well-spent, said it has provided an opportunity for ‘‘reflection and lesson learning aimed at reviewing progress and agreeing on key actions that will ensure we finish well by the end of our Administration come May 29th, 2023.’’

”We have used the opportunity provided by this retreat to carry out an objective assessment of our commitments in line with the contract we signed with the Nigerian people at the inception of this administration in 2019.

ASUU to speak on demands, govt actions after suspending strike

0
ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will today (Wednesday) speak on various matters including the pending court case with the Nigerian government at the Industrial Court.

The court had granted the government’s request by ordering ASUU to suspend its strike while the main case was being heard.

ASUU was dissatisfied with the ruling and approached the Court of Appeal. But the appeal court ordered the union to obey the ruling of the industrial court before seeking an appeal.

ASUU obeyed and suspended the strike on Friday, but it noted that its demands have not been met satisfactorily.

By 6 p.m. today, ASUU Vice President Chris Piwuna will be on PREMIUM TIMES Twitter Space to answer questions as to whether the union will continue to pursue the case before the court, and if the system risks another industrial action soon.

The demands by the lecturers include the release of the revitalisation fund, the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solutions (UTAS) as the preferred payment platform for lecturers, the conclusion and implementation of the renegotiated 2009 agreement, payment of earned academic allowances, the release of whitepapers from the report of the visitation panels and a stop to the proliferation of universities by government.

To meet the union’s demands, the government has budgeted N300 billion as a revitalisation fund for all tertiary institutions and N170 billion for salary increments.

ASUU rejected the government’s proposed 23.5 per cent salary increase for all university workers and 35 per cent for professors, saying the recommendations in the draft agreement with the Nimi Briggs committee are way higher. The Briggs committee was set up by the government to negotiate with ASUU.

The government rejected UTAS and suggested modifications for the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS), to recognise the peculiarities of universities.

The government is yet to release whitepapers from the report of the visitation panels and a plea to halt the establishment of new universities fell flat at the House of Representatives.

CJ to judges: Knowledge on new Insurance Act necessary

0
Justice Kwasi Annin-Yeboah, Chief Justice

Justice Kwasi Annin-Yeboah, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, has urged  judges to expand their knowledge and understating of the new Insurance Act, 2021 (Act 1061) to apply and resolve insurance cases under the Act . This comes after the repeal of the Insurance Act, 2006 (Act 724), which occupied the insurance industry for about 15 years.

In a speech read on his behalf at the opening ceremony of the Nationwide Insurance Workshop for High Court Judges by the National Insurance Commission (NIC), Justice Dennis Adjei, an Appeal Court Judge and Acting Director of the Judicial Training Institute, reiterated the importance of understanding the new changes captured in the new Insurance Act.

He said the new insurance law covered both statutory regime and common law in addition to new charges introduced by the Act. “As judges, we are mandated to resolve all disputes and legalities that may come before us under the Act and we should be able to resolve them in accordance and purpose for which the Act was enacted,” Justice Dennis Adjei said.

“We as judges must understand what the Act seeks to address and apply the Act to promote the interests of stakeholders in the insurance industry, particularly the citizenry,” he added. He explained that the Insurance Act, 2021 (Act 1061) comprised 261 sections that covered different aspects of insurance.

These, according to him included solvency and capital requirements, transfers and mergers, licensing, statutory deposits, mediation of complaints, whistle blowing, financial provisions, among others.

Justice Dennis Adjei also called on the insurance regulator; NIC to ensure the workshop and sensitisation exercise on the new Insurance Act was extended to magistrates, circuit and district court judges across the country.

For now, the insurance workshop is targeted at Judges of the High Court, Appeal Court, and Supreme Court of Ghana. Dr. Justice Ofori, Commissioner of Insurance, said the Ghana Insurance College (GIC) would soon begin engagements with the Judicial Training Institute to incorporate Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) into the College’s training modules.

“This is to inculcate good negotiation and other ADR skills in insurance practitioners not to impede amicable settlement of insurance cases, and reduce insurance-related litigations,” Dr. Ofori said.
