Elton John in last UK farewell show

Elton John

Elton John will headline the Glastonbury Festival next summer in what will be the final UK show of his farewell tour, the festival announced Friday.

John will top the bill on the Pyramid Stage on June 25, the music festival’s final night, Glastonbury organizer Emily Eavis said in a statement posted on the festival’s website. The Glastonbury Festival is held most years in Somerset, southwest England. In 2021, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Paul McCartney were the headline artists.

In a statement shared by his publicist, the singer said he “couldn’t be more excited to be headlining the Pyramid Stage,” adding that he could not “wait to embrace the spirit of the greatest festival in the world. It’s going to be incredibly emotional.”

“It gives me enormous pleasure to let you know that the one and only Elton John will be making his first ever Glastonbury appearance, headlining the Pyramid Stage on the Sunday night next year,” Eavis said.

“This will be the final UK show of Elton’s last ever tour, so we will be closing the Festival and marking this huge moment in both of our histories with the mother of all send offs,” she added.

The performance will close the UK leg of John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour,” publicized as his last ever, with more than 300 dates before his retirement after 52 years of touring.

The tour, which started in 2018, was originally supposed to end in 2021. After being postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it will now finish next summer.

‘Squid Game’ actor indicted over indecent assault charges

Oh Young-soo

‘Squid Game’ Actor, Oh Young-soo will stand trial on charges of indecent assault after a woman accused him of inappropriately touching her in 2017, a South Korean court said.

The district court in Seongnam city said that prosecutors indicted the 78-year-old Emmy nominee last week over the allegations and that his trial will begin in February.

Kim Myeong-un, an official at Seongnam’s district prosecutors’ office, said it could not confirm specific details about Oh’s case, which was first reported by local media last week.

According to the reports, the unidentified woman originally filed a complaint against Oh in December 2021, accusing him of making unwanted physical contact during a meeting in 2017.

Oh did not answer multiple calls by the Associated Press seeking comments.

South Korean cable channel JTBC said Oh denied wrongdoing when reached by a reporter, saying that he had only held the woman’s hands to “show her the way” as they walked around a lake.

According to JTBC, Oh said he had offered the woman an apology, not because he acknowledged the accusations against him but because the woman allegedly told him she “wouldn’t raise an issue” about the incident if he did.

Oh became the first South Korean actor to win a Golden Globe in January after he was named the top supporting actor for his role in “Squid Game,” a brutal Netflix drama about a desperate group of adults competing in deadly children’s games for a chance to escape severe debt.

Oh was also nominated for an Emmy for his performance as Oh Il-nam, a mysterious elderly contestant who joined the games after being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Amy Newman out with new single ‘W’ewie’ on December 7

Mrs. Amy Newman

Veteran Gospel Artiste, Mrs Amy Newman is set torelease a new single titled ‘W’ewie,’ (It is finished) on Wednesday December 7.

Mrs Amy Newman told The Chronicle that “I used the story of the lost sheep in the Bible to compose the song. Like the good Shepherd, every single sheep matters to Him that is why he can keep the 99 and go in search of the lost one.”

She further added that, “I had earlier spoken about my dark days when I was suffering depression. Whilst in search of God, He was also looking for me. The song also speaks about the prodigal son. In that story, the father of the prodigal son was always looking forward to seeing his son back home. That is the kind of father God is; He is always expecting us back no matter how far we have gone.”

The high tempo song has elements of brass band and was produced by Sound Engineer, BB.

‘W’ewie’ follows her first single in 2022, ‘I’m redeemed.’ She recounted earlier; “I remember that it started somewhere in August 2019 when my husband and I marked our 40th wedding anniversary. All of a sudden, I felt empty and didn’t want to meet or talk to anyone.”

She continued, “For some strange reasons, there was this overwhelming fear that always engulfed me. I just couldn’t understand what was causing the anxiety and nervousness. Sincerely, I was at a loss but couldn’t help myself but I know I needed help.I boldly opened up about what I was going through to my children and husband and they supported me till I defeated this evil that wanted to take over my life.”

‘W’ewie’ therefore confirms God’s completion in healing her mental health, Mrs. Amy Newman ended.

Prof. Kwesi Yankah: The curse of penalties: Dede Ayew

Opinion

2007. I sat beside the Maestro Abedi Pele, the celebrated father of Dede Ayew, on a trip to Namibia representing Ghana.

I was part of a three-member delegation put together to market the AFCON trophy ahead of CAN 2008, to be hosted by Ghana. Riks Brobby representing the LOC chairman was with us. I was chair of the Accra Venue Organising Committee.

Our interaction over a three-day period got me closer to Abedi, one of Africa’s greatest footballers, who then retired. In truth, however, our very first encounter was in 2001 in Zurich, Switzerland, where a conference I attended included a visit to the FIFA headquarters.

It was there I met Abedi for the first time, after climbing the longest stairway ever to the FIFA offices located in the high elevations.

Thereafter we met at Legon, where Abedi negotiated to construct a soccer field for his Ajax soccer club, while I was Pro-VC at Legon. Dr Owusu Ansah was Legon’s able sports director.

By a strange coincidence, Abedi’s wife, formerly Miss Banga was also my student at Legon. Her father Mr Agana Banga was Legon’s Finance Officer one of the finest, and we were neighbours at Lower Hill.

On the Namibia Airways 2007, I sat beside Abedi chatting with him about his heydays in world soccer; and I heard him confess he probably wouldn’t have survived the current robust play in the game if he was still playing.

“The soccer terrain is very rough these days; tackling is too robust; and I doubt if I would have survived, considering my small size,” soft-spoken Abedi told me, his small cheek mark sparkling.

Fortunately, Abedi somehow survived aggressive play in global soccer, through his kids, Dede and Jordan.

Their soaked jerseys and battered body frames after every single match, speak volumes about their first love: we risk our lives for the sake of Ghana, but being human, we are not perfect. That’s their body language.

Despite the public bashing of the Black Stars after every game lost, none has dared blame Dede Ayew for lacking commitment to Ghana.

While other players drag their feet and are obsessed with other loyalties, Dede Ayew is ever present, ever punctual, ever disciplined, and responds ever so swiftly to every single call to abandon the club, and come lift high the flag of Ghana.

He screams from rough tackle, groans in pain, limp, hops, and crushes to the ground from sky tussles; but he also queries erring officials, calms nerves, soothes, and wipes tears of grieving pals. All this because of a yellow arm band, that marks him out as captain. The Akan say, ‘Title bequeathed is a burden transferred.’

Last Friday, the mob that had hailed Ayew after his splendid goal against Portugal the week before, suddenly changed their song from praise to crucifixion. The man had missed a penalty in a grudge match with Uruguay when a goal was critically needed to further advance in the tournament.

Crucify him was the new refrain. Others conveyed curses in veiled speech: Ayew remain in Qatar, and never return to Ghana.

His predecessor must have transferred to him, the curse of penalty kicks.

For all Asamoah Gyan had done for mother Ghana: netting the fastest goal in the 2006 world cup in Germany, and putting smiles on the faces of Ghana and Africa umpteen times, his critics only remembered goals squandered.

2008, he was the whipping boy denying Ghana a goal harvest against Namibia in Afcon. Even the lives of family members were put at risk.

Then came 2010, the famous penalty kick against Uruguay, which missed the target. That was the last straw; he was crucified again and again, and now carries a permanent cross.

Gyan somehow carried the curse to his successor Dede Ayew, who has missed a penalty kick that could have sunk Uruguay and sent Ghana to the next round in Qatar. Dede has a golden past; he led Ghana to score Africa’s first goal in Qatar; which was against Portugal.

He had altogether netted for Ghana a total of 24 goals from 47 matches. In 2021, he became Ghana’s all-time top scorer at Afcon. Since last Friday, all that has been expunged from history books. The missed penalty in Qatar is now Ayew’s final certificate in his soccer career.

Somehow, I have faint memories of one penalty experience that broke the nation’s heart, long before Asamoah Gyan. That was 1992 when the Ghana Black Stars in an Afcon encounter lost to Ivory Coast in a penalty shoot-out at Senegal. Abedi Pele was at his peak but missed the shootout due to a red card.

After a ding-dong-ding-dong shootout, Ghana lost narrowly to Ivory Coast by 10-11, and guess who was the whipping boy: Tony Baffoe then in dreadlocks.

Kaduna-Abuja train service resumes

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has resumed operations at the Kaduna-Abuja railway, nine months after nine people were killed and scores of other passengers were abducted by terrorists who attacked the train in a community near Kaduna.

The services of the train were abruptly suspended after the 28 March, 2022, attack.

On Monday, at exactly 9:45 a.m. the first train, since the attack, left the Kaduna terminal for the country’s capital, Abuja.

There were only a handful of passengers on board. Before the resumption of the train services, the police announced new security measures to ensure the safety of the passengers along the routes.

“The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered immediate deployment of armed personnel drawn from the Police Mobile Force, K-9, Force Intelligence Bureau, Explosive Ordinance Unit and Railway Police Command for the commencement of railway services along Abuja/Kaduna rail lines on Monday 5th December 2022,” the police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced that in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

“The Nigeria Police Force has been in regular talks with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and other security agencies in preparation for the commencement of operations.

“The deployment covers major railway stations along the route and operational coaches to provide adequate security for passengers, their property and the entire service to prevent any unforeseen incidence”.

Road contract in Anambra terminated over alleged incompetence by contractor

0
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has terminated a road contract in Aguata Local Government Area, over alleged incompetence and delay in delivery by the contractor.

Though the name of the company handling the contract was not mentioned, a video of the governor’s visit to the site has been making the rounds on the internet.

In the video, Soludo who paid an unscheduled visit on Sunday to the road construction site referred to the company as useless and lacking the capacity to deliver the job.

The governor speaking to the project manager at the project site said: “Just take off all these things (equipment) because this contract has been terminated. I just called the commissioner for works and I have told him that this contract has been terminated.

“See what you are doing. I have terminated the contract, and you are supposed to return the money you were paid. Useless company! We gave you this contract on the basis that you are an indigenous company but see what you are doing.

This is what we see. You blocked the entire highway and nobody can pass. Now, I am going to my hometown, how do I go? This is a federal highway.

“For months, you blocked the road, even for people to pass through the other highway, you blocked the road.

“This job was supposed to have been finished in October, and that was the contract you were given. Other companies that were given the same contracts like you have all delivered.”

The governor refused to heed any plea from the obviously concerned project manager, as he rejected explanations that the road had peculiarities that made it difficult to deliver at the appropriate time.

Dogara defects to PDP after declaring support for Atiku

0
Ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Dogara was received into the party during the presidential campaign by the party’s presidential candidate and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar in the nation’s commercial capital, Lagos State.

This comes 48 hours after a group led by Dogara, the Northern Leaders Consultative Forum adopted Atiku as the preferred presidential candidate for the 2023 election.

On December 2, the group consisting of Christian and Muslim religious and political leaders in the north said after evaluation of all the presidential candidates that Atiku is “the best”.

“It is evident that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is heading for implosion and extinction; hence, it cannot be the party for now and in the future, because of its rejection to embrace inclusiveness in a diverse country like Nigeria. After the 2023 elections, APC may be dead and buried as a political party,” the group said.

“While the duo (NNPP and LP) may emerge as strong contenders in the political arena in the future, from all indications, PDP appears to be the best option to adopt and support.

“All it takes is to sustain and tackle some of the problems and challenges this country faces.

“Certainly, with proper consultations and inclusive appointments, which is mindful of the federal character principle with a sincere consideration of diverse issues such as religious affiliation, geographical location, and ethnic identity, which many believe will enhance justice, fairness and equity, after a careful evaluation of all the issues highlighted above, we now recommend the adoption of the PDP to all lovers of democracy in Nigeria for the 2023 presidential election.”

Diaspora Voting: INEC yet to assure Nigerians E-Transmission of results is reliable -Tinubu

0
Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu has said that Nigerians in the diaspora should be entitled to vote but noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to assure Nigerians that the electronic transmission of election results is reliable.

Tinubu, 70, stated this on Monday during an an appearance at Chatham House in London, the United Kingdom.

Asked on his plans for diaspora voting, the former governor of Lagos State said, “If you make contributions to the economy with the remittances that you are making, your right to vote should not be abrogated but promoted.”

“However, we are still building confidence in our democratic and voting system. INEC is still yet to assure us during this election that electronic transmission; the technology being used for accreditation, and the total votes count is reliable, dependable and assuring in our democratic process before we introduce a complicated element of ballot,” he stated.

Of late, there have been reports that politicians who are against the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and INEC Election Result Viewing Portal (IReV) attempt to use the court to stop INEC from deploying BVAS in the 2023 general elections but the electoral body has consistently restated its commitment and determination to deploy the system for the 2023 general elections.

BVAS is stipulated in the Electoral Act of 2022 and is a technological system which allows for accreditation of voters through biometrics capturing, uploading of results amongst others.

It has been described by many as an upgrade of the smartcard reader used in the last general elections which achieved some results in the country’s electoral process.

An EasyJet flight bound for the UK from Poland had to be diverted to the Czech Republic on Sunday due to a report of a “possible bomb” on board.

The low-cost British airline’s flight EZY6276 was heading from Krakow to Bristol on Sunday evening but the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing so that law enforcement could sweep the plane for explosives.

Prague Airport officials confirmed in a tweet that the plane landed safely in the capital of the Czech Republic at 10:50 p.m. local time.

“At 22:50, a diverted aircraft landed safely at @PragueAirport on the Krakow-Bristol route. There was reported a possible bomb on board an aircraft,” the tweet said. “All actions to ensure the safety of passengers and all air traffic are currently being carried out by @PolicieCZ.”

The incident was also confirmed by the official Twitter page of the Czech Republic police, @PolicieCZ, in a message translated from Czech, which read: “Our bomb squad technicians are currently at the scene investigating a report of a possible explosive device.”

Prague Airport later said that no dangerous object had been found on the plane.

EasyJet told CNN in a statement on Monday that the plane had been diverted as a “precautionary security measure. “EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY6276 from Krakow to Bristol yesterday evening diverted to Prague purely as a precautionary security measure,” the low-cost airline said.

Search for bus passengers buried in mudslide in Colombia

Rescuers are proceeding carefully to avoid the bus tumbling down the hillside

A landslide on a road in the province of Risaralda in western Colombia has killed at least three people and buried dozens more. A bus full of passengers was among several vehicles buried under mud and rocks, which tumbled down a hillside following heavy rains.

One of the passengers helped his wife and two children escape from the bus before he was buried and died.

Rescuers are using heavy machinery to try to dislodge the mud.

The landslide happened in the early hours of Sunday morning local time on the road leading to the northern province of Chocó.

Witnesses said an intercity bus, a jeep, and a motorbike had stopped on the road because of a car accident further ahead when part of the hillside collapsed on top of them.

The bus is thought to have had two drivers and 25 passengers on board.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro wrote on Twitter that nine people had been rescued and more than 20 were still missing.
