Opening the outreach programe, the General Manger for Aboso Mine, Catherine KuupolKuutor said the medical outreach programme was aimed at bringing primary healthcare to the doorstep of our community people.

She added that, through the programme, persons with conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes have had their conditions diagnosed for the first time. She said the target was to improve on last years’ numbers for patients seen and women screened.

“As we have done every year, we will be dispensing medication to patients who were prescribed medications by the same doctors”.
The President of Rotary Club Tarkwa, Desmond Mclean Arthur, appealed to the host communities to avail themselves for the the outreach programme.

He said, considering the importance of health, one could not afford to stay home and not take advantage of the programme.

To him, people should take advantage because “this is free and we have brought it to your doorstep. So just take advantage, get screened for medication and take your free medicines”.

He also lauded the collaboration that has existed between GGF and the Rotary Club for the medical outreach programme.

Court holds KMA liable for demolition of Anwomaso stores

Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly

A Kumasi High Court has directed the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to apply to join the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly (OMA) as co-defendants in a suit over a disputed parcel of land. This is to enable the court effectively determine the case once and for all.

Nana Osei Boa III, the chief of Anwomaso, has filed a suit against the KMA for the demolition of about 22 stores constructed on a piece of land, hitherto under the control of KMA, which was demarcated for the construction of a Lorry Terminal under a World Bank funding.

The said construction is said to be unauthorised by the KMA in contravention of section 91 (1) of the Local Government Act 936 of 2016, which provides that “A person shall not carry out physical development in a district, except with the prior written approval in the form of a written permit issued by the District Planning Authority”.

The demolition followed a non compliance of a “Stop Work” order communicated to the chief by the Metro Works Engineer on July 11, 2017 or risk demolition and surcharged with the cost.

The July 11, 2017 “Stop Work” order was a follow up to an earlier one, dated December 13, 2016 following persistent calls on the chief to stop work on the reconstruction of Anwomaso market.

When it became evident that the chief would not heed to counsel to refrain from continuing with construction activities on the site, for the proposed Anwomaso Lorry terminal, another directive per a letter dated March 9, 2017 was issued.

The plaintiff, however, claimed by a letter dated March 19, 2017 that he was directed by the Manhyiahene of Otumfuo’s Lands Secretariat to go back to the site, because the dispute on the said land, involving the chief and KMA had been settled amicably.

As a result of the action, the KMA per its counsel prayed the court to substitute it (KMA) with the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly because the disputed land is located within the Kumasi metropolis.

A motion of notice by the KMA counsel on February 25, 2022 which was accompanied by an affidavit in support by Kwadwo Akuamoah Boateng, the Metro Co-ordinating Director of KMA, said all assets and liabilities of properties which were previously within the Kumasi metropolis had been transferred to OMA and that OMA is the proper entity to continuewith the prosecution of the suit since it is benefitting from the property in dispute.

But the court, presided over by Her Ladyship Justice Priscilla Dikro Ofori (Mrs.), dismissed KMA’s application to substitute it with OMA.

The court, in its ruling said the KMA, as the necessary partner is the proper institution to be sued and, therefore, cannot run away from the liability through the backdoor.

It said the application is a serious aberration of the legal process and had no merit hence its dismissal.

The court noted that the KMA still has a case to answer because of the role it played before the re-demarcation following the upgrade of Oforikrom into a Municipal status.

GPHA donates drones to Ghana Navy for surveillance

The Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) has donated two drones to the Ghana Navy and Ghana Boundary Commission to improve on surveillance at their various points of operations.

The gesture by the GNPC is its recognition of the need to have a secure, well-monitored and well-developed maritime space in which its assets such as FPSOs, vessels, pipelines and other infrastructure are secure from unwanted marine traffic and other activities.

Presenting the drones to the two beneficiary institutions at a brief ceremony in Tema, the Deputy CEO of GNPC, Benjamin Acolatse, said the equipment would further aid the Ghana Navy to detect and monitor vessels remotely, carry out surveillance and track suspicious activities. It would also help to monitor remote offshore or isolated sites, monitor ‘Right of Way’ and ‘Secure’ zones, monitor trespassing and vandalism and combat illegal debunking, theft and piracy.

“We also believe these drones will be very useful in protecting the marine ecosystem. Drones have proven to be cost-efficient, accurate, effective and reliable. GNPC will continue to work with the Ghana Maritime Authority, the Ghana Navy and GhBC to advance our common goal of having a safe and secure maritime space to operate within,” he concluded.

The outgoing Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Naval Command, Commodore Emmanuel Ayesu Kwafo, described the donation as timely, given the illegal activities on the country’s boundary borders.

“The drone will be used to provide a regular and efficient assessment of Ghana’s maritime boundaries by providing intelligence, surveillance and important information,” Commodore Kwafo explained.

The National Coordinator of the Ghana Boundary Commission, Major General Emmanuel Kotia, on his part explained the mandates of the Ghana Boundaries Commission as stipulated in ACT 795, which include negotiating and collaborating with relevant security agencies to ensure the safety of Ghana’s maritime boundaries and safeguarding the security and territorial sovereignty of Ghana.

On account of that, he said the drone would give the leeway to ensure that the maritime boundary is safe at all times.

Major General Kotia noted that, “Over the years, the Ghana Boundary Commission has cooperated with the GNPC on maritime issues.

The GNPC’s continued support of the Ghana Boundary Commission has been quite useful since it has helped enormously in the discharge of its mandate. But for the GNPC, the Commission would have been lacking in the discharge of its key mandate.

“The Commission seeks to collaborate in future with the GNPC to look at exploration in the Volta Basin which has land boundary implications.”

Major General Kotia appealed for more drones to enable it to discharge its duties as the Commission seeks to explore more areas next year.

Why do females struggle to sustain relevance in Creative Arts? –Lady Scratch

“Even in the Artiste of the decade category in Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) in 2019, the competition was between Sarkodie and Samini. Hardly did people push for any woman in that category” Lady Scratch, an Artiste who is now in media wondered why the females struggle to sustain relevance in Creative Arts.

Known officially as Belinda Yaa Kyeiwa Asomani, Lady Scratch is asking scads of questions as to why the industry does not favour the females to live to their highest potential. “Is it that the industry is male biased or there is a way to reward the males than the females in the industry?” Lady Scratch wondered further.

Speaking to The Chronicle, Lady Scratch mentioned that, she is sure if Eno Barony was a male, she would have done better than she is doing now.

Using her days in music and her current work in the media, Lady Scratch added that; “I got a better understanding of the media and how it works when I started working as the Producer of programmes that promote music.

For instance, with ‘Yenko fie’ and ‘Adwuma pa mbre’ on Connect FM where I work, there are conscious efforts to push music of the females.”

“So it will be unfair to say that the media does not support the females but the issue is why are they unable to sustain relevance for long” Lady Scratch quizzed.

She further wondered why “no female Artiste has been able to stay relevant in the industry like Sarkodie?”

“There is an urgent need for the industry to convene on this issue because there will come a time Ghana will struggle to get any female to compete on the international stage.

I think the media, industry players and the females in the industry at large should as a matter of urgency brainstorm on this” Lady Scratch ended.

James Ebo Whyte, popularly known as Uncle Ebo Whyte, a renowned Playwright has asked the government not to abandon the creative industry.

On Joy TV, which was monitored by The Chronicle, he stated that the creative sector has a lot to offer the economy if it is offered the needed support.

In his submissions on the show, he said that should the creative industry be given maximum attention and lift as the other institutions, no sector can compete with it.

“We are not interested in growing anything in this country, but I can tell anyone who cares to listen, that nothing will compare to the creative industry if we are given the right attention. Nothing, no sector, not cocoa, not gold, not oil, nothing,” he said.

Also speaking to the current development of the country, the playwright in comparison said Ghana’s economy is been run like a teenager.

“We are not neat, teenagers will not clean their rooms. We think we know, so we are too known, we are lazy we would rather sleep and have fun than anything else. We do not want to do the work of the mind and that is Ghana for you,” he said.

Uncle Ebo Whyte noted that although the country is past 60 years, its civilization to other countries in comparison, Ghana is still young and needs to double up the pace to build a face-front nation.

This he explains as being evident in the governance of the country.
