At least three police officers were shot dead and another injured on Saturday night when gunmen attacked the security operatives at a checkpoint along the Enugu/Abakaliki expressway.

The gunmen, who arrived in two Toyota Sienna vehicles, reportedly opened fire when they arrived at the checkpoint, killing three policemen on the spot.

Another police officer who was shot in the leg is said to be receiving treatment at a hospital in the Ebonyi State capital.

The incident took place Saturday night at the checkpoint located on the expressway between Enugu and Ebonyi states.

The police spokesperson in Ebonyi, Chris Anyanwu, confirmed the incident.

He said the hoodlums operated in two Sienna vehicles. “Yesterday’s attack by unknown gunmen at Ebonyi/Enugu boundary took place at about 1808hrs.

“Three police personnel of Operation Safer Highway, fatally injured. Later confirmed dead. “Hoodlums operated in two sienna vehicles, drove into the Check-point, opened fire on the policemen,” he said in a statement.

Saturday’s attack is the latest in the series of deadly attacks on the police and other security agencies in the South-east.

Gunmen have been unleashing terror in Ebonyi and other South-eastern states in recent years, attacking civilians, security operatives and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Last December, gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in Abakaliki, killing a police officer. The gunmen stormed the checkpoint on a motorcycle on 5 December 2022 and opened fire on the police operatives.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has again extended the deadline for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) by an additional one week.

The PVC collection earlier scheduled to end on 29th January is now to continue until 5th February, said a statement by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, had on Friday said his meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) will deliberate on the ongoing collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) in its 774 Local Government Offices nationwide.

“Arising from reports from the various States and discussions with Resident Electoral Commissioners, the Commission has decided to further extend PVC collection in all its Local Government Offices nationwide by an additional one week,” Mr Okoye said.

“Collection period has further been extended by an additional two hours and will start at 9am and end at 5pm daily including Saturdays and Sundays.”

The Commission, however, said it did not print the PVCs of voters who engaged in double registration. “The Commission will continue to act on all reported cases of sharp practices during the ongoing PVC collection and will ensure that no Nigerian is disadvantaged and all those that carried out valid registration have an opportunity of collecting their PVCs,” he added.

“The Commission once again salutes the patience and doggedness of citizens.”

Article 71 Office Holders must take a 50% haircut -Labour Federation

0
Mr Abraham Koomson, Ghana Federation of Labour General Secretary

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has recommended a 50 per cent haircut on the salaries and emoluments of Article 71 Office Holders as part of the Debt Restructuring Programme and to reduce the pressure on the public purse.

These include the President and Vice, the Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice, and Justices of the Supreme Court, with salaries charged to the Consolidated Fund and enjoying special constitutional privileges.

Mr Abraham Koomson, the GFL General Secretary, said this at the Ghana News Agency Industrial News Hub platform at Tema, adding that Ghana was currently encountering a major financial challenge and Article 71 Office Holders could not sit aloof.

Speaking on the Government’s debt restructuring, he said the payment of ex-gratia must also undergo an overhaul of about 70 per cent cut and that the ordinary person could not be made to suffer the crisis alone.

He reiterated the call for a reduction in the number of presidential staffers, ministers of state, and other government appointees to reduce expenditure and set the tone to revive the economy.

He said the debt exchange programme should be undertaken with caution in order not to push people in the middle and lower classes into poverty, which would have a negative impact on national development.

Mr. Koomson said the programme would also render most of the banks vulnerable and affect the living standard of the citizenry, hence called for circumspection.

Ghana’s ports ensure safe, secure & efficient marine operations

Harbour Master, Port of Tema, Captain Francis Kwesi Micah

The Harbour Master at the Port of Tema, Captain Francis Kwesi Micah has touted the processes in place at Ghana’s ports which have maintained the ports’ reputation of being safe, secure and efficient hubs for the maritime trade.

Speaking on the role of port marine operations on the global supply chain on the Eye on Port TV program, the seasoned mariner said Ghana’s ports have implemented several standardized and internationally recognized procedures that will not only guarantee the continuity of the seaborne trade, but also ensure the security and safety of maritime personnel, properties and the environment.

He said the ports of Ghana operate under the Maritime Security Level 1 (MARSEC 1) which means the minimum appropriate security measures necessary are maintained at all times.

The ports of Ghana are also signatories to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

In addition, Ghana’s ports comply with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code which has set in place minimum security arrangements for ships, ports and government agencies around the world.

Ghana’s ports also comply with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) geared towards sustainable use of the ocean environment.

Capt. Micah, who is the head of the Marine Operations Department and the ISPS Officer at the Port of Tema, says his outfit fulfils its responsibility of ensuring all these safeguards are in place in their operations.

“We are always aware of our position in this intricate web to ensure that we get the fundamentals right to ensure safety, security and efficiency.”

This he said is done by ensuring safety of personnel on board vessels, and the safety of equipment being deployed for marine operations.

Security is also maintained by joint security patrols across the anchorages of the ports, and other coordinated efforts with key stakeholders such as the Navy, the Ghana Maritime Authority and the Marine Police.

A network of Ghana’s port personnel and representatives of key stakeholders including Customs, at the port, he said, implement standard procedures for the handling of vessels carrying the various forms of cargoes.

The ISPS committee according to the Harbour Master, meet periodically to discuss and explore developing trends that come up so far as maritime security is concerned.

He said he recognizes the critical role of the port as it serves as the interface and gateway to international commerce. On the other hand, the port can inadvertently serve as a conduit for international crime and catastrophe thus “we have established the declaration of security among other procedures to ensure that vessels, their cargoes and the port facility are all safe to protect life and property.”

The Harbour Master at the Port of Tema said one major hallmark of the security at Ghana’s ports is its success in preventing stowaways at the ports over recent years.

He said management of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) is moving ahead to ensure that Ghana’s ports are not used to disembark stowaways from other countries.

“We saw our ports have been used as safe landing spots for these stowaways. So to combat this, some punitive fines have been introduced in the tariffs to make it not convenient for ship masters or PNI clubs,” he added.

Another threat to security that is noteworthy, he said, is the growing case of illegal bunkering activities outside of the port’s jurisdiction and the Ghana Navy, and allied agencies have doubled up efforts to eradicate this menace.

The Harbour Master also made mention of the influx of fisher folk who may breach the access channels for fishing activities. GPHA he said is concerned due to the safety risk that poses on fishers themselves and the shipping business.

“Because once a vessel is making its way through a designated channel, that passage should not be impeded by these fisher folk because it could end up with the vessel taking evasive action which could potentially end it up in shallow grounds and that will cause havoc to the ship and the entire port environment and that will affect the economy and global commerce. We all remember what happened in the Suez Canal. There’s been difficulty in that area sometimes, because “when we ward them off, they find themselves at some other area of the anchorage.”

Nonetheless, Capt. Micah disclosed that the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority will continue to upgrade its processes, acquire modern equipment and train its staff, all towards the goal of creating world class ports that are not efficient but safe and secure for business.

He praised the combined efforts of all stakeholders who have contributed to the enviable position of the ports of Ghana in the maritime industry of West and Central Africa.

Sharon Stone says many big stars are 'misogynists

“I’ve worked with some of the biggest stars in the business, who will literally talk through my close-up, telling me what they think I should do. They’re so misogynistic,” the actress said during an interview with Variety.

However, she immediately followed her remarks and reassured that Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci were among a few colleagues that treated her fairly.

“Now, that is not Robert De Niro. That is not Joe Pesci, that is not those guys,” Stone confirmed.

Sharon Stone says many Hollywood stars are misogynists

The Oscar nominee referred to her time working with De Niro and Pesci on Martin Scorsese’s film “Casino.” The 1995 movie focused on each of the character’s lives in Las Vegas in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

Stone continued to get candid about her unpleasant experiences in Hollywood working with “misogynists.”

“They just will not listen to me and will not allow me to affect their performance with my performance. That’s not great acting,” she continued to tell the media outlet.

“I get that you’re great and everybody thinks you’re wonderful. But listening, being present for those fractured moments, is really the human experience.”

The 64-year-old actress’ comments come on the heels of her dramatic appearance on “Saturday Night Live” with musician Sam Smith.

Stone stunned in a sparkly gold and black dress while modeling on stage with Smith singing his track “Gloria” in the background.

Although the “Basic Instinct” star said that Smith “trusted” her with his artistic vision, she continued to point out that some “really big stars” in the past have not.

Kim Kardashian shut down a paparazzo who inquired about her ex-husband Kanye West’s alleged battery incident in front of her kids on Friday.

“Hey Kim, what do you think of Kanye hitting someone … [sic] the paparazzi’s phone?” the photographer can be heard asking in video obtained by Page Six.

“Do not talk to me about that in front of my kids,” the “Kardashians” star, 42, sternly responded, prompting the photographer to apologize to her.

During this exchange, a child can be heard shouting, “Please leave!”

Kardashian was attending her daughter North’s basketball game that night, and her son Saint was also present. It is unclear which child made the heartbreaking proclamation.

The protective mom of four then ensured her kids got in the silver SUV safely before she said goodbye to her sister Khloé Kardashian’s ex Tristan Thompson, who also attended the basketball game.

A few hours prior, TMZ reported that West, 45, was named the suspect of a battery investigation after he grabbed a woman’s phone out of her hand and threw it once she refused to stop filming him.

According to footage of the incident, the “Donda” rapper noticed he was being followed by someone who was recording him outside of his daughter North’s basketball game.

Ye then got out of his car and confronted the woman, while she recorded him with her dog on her lap.

“You didn’t have to run up on me like that,” West told the woman, as she held her cell phone in his face. “If I say stop, stop with your cameras!”

Andrew Garfield reveals his thought process while auditioning as Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield has revealed what was going through his head while auditioning for The Amazing Spider-Man.

The 39-year-old actor, who has donned the iconic red and blue suit three times in his career, shared what the audition process was like for a new book from Marvel titled Spider-Man: No Way Home: The Official Movie Special.

The book features interviews not just from Andrew but from other returning cast members as well as new ones.

‘I thought, “How cool would it be to fulfill some weird version of a childhood dream,”‘ he said. ‘So, of course, I auditioned and didn’t really think much of it in terms of [if] I would get it or not.’

When he was called back for a screen test, the job suddenly became real to him.

‘I suddenly thought, “This could happen. This could be a thing that will change my life.” Obviously, that created conflict in the sense of, “Do I want to be that recognizable? Do I want to take on this responsibility?”‘

He then said: ‘But then, of course, I did want to! So I decided to screen test and throw my hat in the ring.’

Andrew first suited up as the titular character for The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, and two years later, he got back in action for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Eight years later, he got the opportunity to play the beloved character again in the third Spider-Man film from Marvel Studios, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Spice girls have met Charles several times throughout their career

The Spice Girls are reportedly set to reunite for King Charles III‘s Coronation in May.

It is rumoured that the pop icons – including Victoria Beckham – will take to the stage as a five piece as part of a huge royal concert amid an epic three-day celebration.

It is said that royal organisers are ‘super keen’ to bring in the girl group as a ‘star signing’ for the concert, with the girls having met Charles several times throughout their career.

If it goes ahead, it will be the first time the Spice Girls have performed as a five-piece since the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony.
King Charles’ three day Coronation spectacle will take place between Saturday May  and Monday May 8.

A source told The Sun: ‘Royal organisers are super keen to secure Britain’s biggest girl band and the Spice Girls are seriously pondering a return to the stage as a five piece for such a historical event.

‘Certainly the reality is that the Coronation is as special as The Olympics – a one off celebration and unique performance.’

The insider went on to add: ‘There is a general sense that a reunion could happen for something this significant. Mel B and Mel C are the ring leaders in the group, trying to make it happen.’

MailOnline have contacted representatives of the Spice Girls for comment.

Last week, Mel C opened up on her disappointment at the Spice Girls not being able to perform at the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee concert in June last year.

Olesya Krivtsova, 19, is facing charges of discrediting the Russian army

Olesya Krivtsova sports an anti-Putin tattoo on one ankle and a bracelet that tracks her every move on the other.

The 19-year-old from Russia’s Arkhangelsk region must wear the device while she is under house arrest after she was charged over social media posts that authorities say discredit the Russian army and justify terrorism.

Russian officials added Krivtsova to the list of terrorists and extremists, on a par with ISIS, al Qaeda and the Taliban, for posting an Instagram story about the explosion on the Crimean bridge in October that also criticized Russia for invading Ukraine.

Krivtsova, a student at Northern (Arctic) Federal University in the northwestern city of Arkhangelsk, is also facing criminal charges for discrediting the Russian army for making an allegedly critical repost of the war in a student chat on the Russian social network VK.

Currently, Krivtsova is staying under house arrest in her mother’s apartment in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk region, banned from going online and using other forms of communication.
