He said his group has already provided the final year students with mathematical sets, rulers and pens towards their B.E.C.E examination.

Mr. Oye expressed hope that once the donation of the computers has been done, other year groups of the school would follow their example.

Mr. John Alexander Ackon, former Ashanti Regional Minister and President of St. Thomas Cathedral Church, Obuasi, noted that digitisation is the way to go and thank the 1991 Year Group for supporting their former school with the computers.

“The 1991 Group has done tremendously well with this donation and the church and the school management committee would want to appreciate this level of your support, ” he said.

Mr. Ackon pleaded with the group to consider giving similar support to the primary school.

Let us revise the 6 months Semester for Junior High Schools

0
Opinion

The need to eulogise the Ghana Government, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and Teacher Unions for the strategic plans put in place to ensuring successful reopening of schools in the midst of Covid-19,through the advent of the semester system in Junior High Schools is prudent.
However, the giant mice that keeps unsettling the skulls of the Ghanaian populace is whether the semester system has come to stay. The system was introduced on the 18th day of January, 2021 so that, teachers and learners at the Junior High School level could meet up with the contact hours lost as a result of the pandemic (Covid-19).
The Pros
It is worth admiring the policy mainly because it has:

1. provided adequate time frame for teachers to cover many topics within the syllabus.
2. reduced cost of financing education at the Junior High School level.
3. increased teacher and student interaction, making teachers have adequate information about their students.
The Cons
The system affects education delivery in the following ways:
1. exerts continuous pressure on school facilities leading to increased cost of maintenance and repairs.
2. Increase in teacher and learner stress level with a spark in ill-health, and absenteeism, because of its prolonged nature, considering the age group of the students at that level.

3. boredomdue to repetition of lessons coupled with lack of teaching and learning materials.
4. Increases cost of school supervision among others.
Policy Recommendations
In an attempt to reviewing the semester system, the following recommendations are worth taking note of:

1. the Ghana Education Service should support School Management Committees so that they could assist in taking charge of repairs and maintenance of school facilities without always looking up to the government.
2. over-reliance on improvisation in our schools should be a thing of the past. The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service should procure adequate teaching and learning materials to facilitate teaching and learning. This would also help boost learner interest in learning during the long stay in school, leading to reduction in boredom and persistent improvisation of teaching and learning materials.
3. the mid-semester break should be extended or the duration for the semester system be reduced to make room for enough rest for learners and teachers.
4. grants should be promptly released to lessen the cost of managing the schools.
5. health packages for education sector workers should be introduced to cater for health breakdowns during these long periods of staying in school.
6. there should be infirmarians in each Junior High School to nurse the sick.
7. Finally, incentive packages for teachers teaching more than 35 students per class should be introduced.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the call to reviewing the semester system at the Junior High level should be hailed. It is imperative to roll down the political curtain, salute the flag of unity and togetherness to drive education to an estimable pedestal in our cherished country, Ghana.

Philippines President will not race against daughter in elections

0

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte will run for senator in next year’s election, in a last minute move that rules him out of a potential vice presidential race against his daughter, according to his candidacy filing seen by CNN.

President Duterte filed his candidacy in the last hour before registration ended on Monday at 5 p.m local time.

The move follows much back-and-forth over the decision on which position to run for in the 2022 election. Duterte is not eligible to run for president again.

Earlier Monday, Duterte’s communications secretary said the President would run for vice president. Then, his presidential spokesman said Duterte would not run against his daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio, who had filed her candidacy for vice president, according to CNN affiliate CNN Philippines.

In the Philippines, the president and vice president are elected in separate contests.

Duterte is not eligible to run for president again, but was eligible to run for other posts, including vice president, senator, congressman, mayor or governor. He was mayor of Davao City before running for president in 2016.

UK hospital car blast declared a terror incident

0

An explosion outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital on Remembrance Sunday has been declared a UK police have declared the blast outside a hospital in Liverpool a terrorist incident and said they believed the explosion occurred when a man brought an improvised device into a taxi.

Officers said Monday that a passenger is believed to have entered the vehicle with an explosive device that suddenly went off. The suspect died in the blast but the taxi driver managed to escape. Police have arrested four men, all aged in their 20s, and believe they know the identity of the suspect.

The incident began when the driver of the taxi picked up a fare on a residential street in the northwest English city. A man entered and asked to be taken to Liverpool Women’s Hospital, a short drive away, Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson of Counter Terrorism North West said at a press conference on Monday.

“Our enquiries indicate that an improvised explosive device has been manufactured and our assumption so far is that this was built by the passenger in the taxi,” Jackson said.

Surveillance camera footage appears to show the taxi slowing to a stop in the hospital’s car park a few minutes later, before a sudden blast takes place. A man is seen leaving the car before it is quickly engulfed in flames.
