Samartex Fortress -Revelation Of Our Time

0
The Nsenkyire Stadium
The VIP section

The result of a dream and innovation is the imposing Nsenkyire Stadium, owned by Ghana Premier League side FC Samartex. The uniqueness of the facility is no wonder the tonic for all football followers across the country, if not the globe.

Come to think of the resources put together to complete a splendid architectural football arena with about 99.9% of locally induced materials of pure wood.

The Samartex Fortress story should truly kindle the spirit of CAN DO and the issue of consuming what we have.

Apart from the main pitch, which is also another topic altogether, everything from the stands right to floodlight is made of wood, which is abundant in our part of the world.

No wonder, the stadium was filled to capacity as football fans found their way to every elevation, with the unique floodlights not spared.

The playing field with the stand in the background

It reminds one of the days when the Accra and Kumasi sports stadia hosted the Porcupine Warriors and Phobians respectively.

It should serve as an eye opener for the authorities to adopt the same system at Samreboi, by building such an edifice in every district around the country to attract football fans to the stadia.

Already, Dormaa, Bibiani and Sogakope have developed similar facilities, though with traditional building materials.

At the time we are complaining of fans boycotting the various stadia, the Samartex story has sincerely changed the narrative, as the fans from all indication feel a part of the local team.

It is unfortunate that a place like Tema, an industrial and port city with giant corporate entities, cannot boast of even half the capacity of the shining example by Samartex.

A section of the Pub

Could the assertion that the administrative authorities in Tema some years ago refused the Volta Aluminum Company (Valco) to put up an extraordinary stadium of American standard to befit the status of Tema be true?.

A sizeable sporting facility in Tema to harness talents is long overdue. We must begin to name the organizations, such as Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Tema Department Company (TDC), GHACEM, Steel manufacturing companies and Shipping companies to donate for a good cause.

More grease to your elbows, Samartex FC.

“Cotton Comes to Harlem” comes to town

0
Opinion

An African American classic movie, Cotton Comes to Harlem made waves in the 70’s. In it, the Harlem’s African-American population is being ripped off by Rev. Deke O’Malley, who dishonestly claims that small donations will secure parcels of land in Africa.

When New York City police officers Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson look into O’Malley’s scam, they learn that the cash is being smuggled inside a bale of cotton. At the end, Deke O’Malley was publicly exposed and he lost his popularity and with it, came shame.

In Ghana, a self-acclaimed investigative journalist, Anas Amereyaw Anas, coming from under the shadow of KwekoBaako Jnr, hit the scene in the later years of Rawlings’ administration.

From there, Anas started producing documentaries on public officers he would allege were deeply involved in corruption. Starting with the Burger Story in 1999, Anas regularly had something to serve, that touched the hearts of many Ghanaians.

Some Ghanaians, however, like Gravedigger and Coffin, were convinced that there was a scam.

First there was this case of voice-over in his documentaries which could not really translate into what was actually happening. Then Anas’ style of investigation was thought to be entrapment, which in itself is illegal. In fact legal luminaries, Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong (NDC) and Gloria Akufo (NDC) on two separate occasions stated that Anas’ documentaries would not pass in court.

His hit documentaries included the September 2015 Ghana in the Eyes of God which was on Judiciary Scandal and May 2019 Number 12: When Greed and Corruption Become the Norm. But it was here that more Ghanaians started openly criticising Anas. For example, in Ghana in the Eyes of God, a judge was videoed from a distance receiving an item, but with a voice-over, Ghanaians were told the judge was receiving a bribe.

Then in Number 12: When Greed and Corruption Become the Norm, Anas posed as an Accra Hearts of Oak official and went to bribe referee Samual Suka to spice the team’s match against Kumasi Asante Kotoko in Hearts’ favour. During that match a dubious penalty was awarded against Kotoko for Hearts to win the match played in March 2017. May 9, 2001 could have bneen revisited and who will open up to accept the blame?

There was this encounter with Kenyan referee Aden Marwa, who Anas insisted he takes money from him. In the documentary it came out that Marwa was bribed and he was banned for life by CAF and FIFA. Anas can use people and dumped them.

What actually became distasteful to some Ghanaians was when the GFA chairman, Kwesi Nyantakyi was caught on camera striking a deal with investors in a business that had nothing to do with football. What many Ghanaians do not know was that what happened in that room was a normal way brokers strike deals.

When Kwesi Nyantakyi was refunded the money, he used as travelling expenses and boarding and lodging, Anas told us in the documentary that the GFA boss was receiving bribe. This ended the career of this football administrator and with it, his chances of becoming FIFA boss.

Gradually, it was becoming clear that Anas was using all the wrong and illegal methods to produce his undercover documentaries. For example, his September 2007 documentary on child prostitution, dubbed Soja Bar Prostitution was not his original work. It was the work of Jonathan Adams, of the Observer newspaper, who was doing decent job, until Anas led by Tatiana, an American, hijacked it from him in what a crime called plagiarism in journalism.

Also, Anas went ahead and engaged in child pornography when he secretly videoed children having sex. This constitutes Child Abuse and one could get jailed for it.

Anas’ bubble burst when Hon Kennedy Agyepong obtained undercover recordings on him and exposed him for what he really is when doing undercover works.

Today Anas has been exposed for what he truly is. Using undercover investigations to enrich himself. How could he accept $100,000.00 to remove the real culprit in a $1.9 million scandal and make him go scot free?

People are asking about the undercover work on Ghana’s Legislative Arm of Government, which Anas told Ghanaianswas would expose worse corrupt acts and he would show after the episode on the judiciary. The question is, how much did Anas received to ditch this documentary?

Anas rushed to court to use the law to cover up his misdeeds demanding GH¢ 25 million from the defendant, Kennedy Agyepong. Unfortunately, relying on video evidence before him, Justice Eric Baah, on March 15, 2023 exposed how corrupted Anas is and dismissed his claim.

Now Ghanaians are now waking up and questions fired out. Who is sponsoring Anas, with thethousands of dollars being spent as bribes in his documentaries? How much isspent on those Arab street boys Anas hires to pose as very wealthy businessmen? What is in it for Ghana? What is Anas, a full-blooded Ghanaian gaining by presenting Ghana to the outside world as the most corrupt nation on earththat should be avoided as investment destination. Meanwhile, the countries sponsoring Anas are worse in acts of corruption.

Cotton Comes to Harlem has come to town and Tiger I, should stop convincing itself that Anas can get the admirers as before. Our Rev Deke O’Malley has been exposed. Amen, somebody.

Barely 24 hours after gunmen killed a major and four soldiers in an ambush attacks in Igu village, Munya Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, the Nigerian Air Force has carried out a major offensive against bandits, killing “scores” of them in multiple airstrikes on their hideout.

The airstrikes were carried out on the bandits’ hideout in Camace in Kazai Ward, Tsohon Kabula village, all in Munya LGA of the state on Friday afternoon when the bandits were said to be regrouping after the killing of the major and other four soldiers.

Also killed during the ambush by the bandits were four local vigilantes while several others including some soldiers were injured and are said to be receiving treatment at a government health facility in Minna, the state capital.

A source close to Kamace village told our correspondent on the phone that about 20 out of those kidnapped from Adunu and Beni communities earlier escaped to freedom during the military onslaught on the bandits.

Although according to our source, the number of the bandits killed in the airstrikes could not be ascertained as they were bombed in two different locations, he said out of the 35 motorcycles of the bandits sighted in the bush and carrying three people each, only seven escaped.

He said the first group of the bandits that were hit by the airstrike were trying to take cover at Kamace Primary School before they were struck, leaving over 30 of them and their motorcycles destroyed.

He disclosed further that the second group that were killed by the airstrike had actually come to evacuate the bodies of their colleague, unknown to them that the fighter jet had not left the vicinity when an unspecified number of them were neutralised.

Our source further added that following the heavy causalities suffered from the bombardment, the bandits are now in disarray, scrambling for safety, adding that “some of them were running towards pole wires, Kudami in Kafin Koro, Paikoro local government area and Rijana forest in Kaduna State”.

When contacted, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Mr.Emmanuel Umar, confirmed the air raid but declined to comment further.

Military clears Doguwa, says lawmaker fired AK-47 in Falgore forest, ceremoniously

Alhassan Doguwa

Following the emergence of a viral video of the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, bearing a gun, the Nigerian Defence Headquarters has said the clip was taken during the 3 Brigade Nigerian Army Training Exercise, where he was invited as a special guest and he fired AK-47 rifle in Falgore Forest, ceremoniously.

Defence spokesman, Brig.-General Tukur Gusau said: “The Defence Headquarters wishes to state that the video is a calculated attempt by mischief-makers to discredit the Armed Forces of Nigeria and dent its image before the good people of this country and the world at large.
“The video in question was taken at Falgore Forest Military Training Camp during the 3 Brigade Nigerian Army Training Exercise, where Alhassan Ado Doguwa was invited as a special guest.

“It is worthy to state that when senior citizens and special guests are invited for such exercises, they are accorded the honour to participate in the firing exercise as a ceremonial firing party. Ceremonial firing in such an exercise is the practice the world over and

it is not new in the armed forces as several other senior citizens have participated in such exercises in the past.”
According to Gusau, the viral video was posted with an intent to dent the image of the military at a time the role of the armed forces in the last presidential and National Assembly elections was hailed by Nigerians and the international community.

He stated that some clerics had equally released audio clips containing wrong interpretations of the speech the Majority Leader made on the occasion, saying:“the doctored interpretation of the speech is capable of instigating crisis, thus leading to heightened tension as the country prepares for a smooth transition to another elected government.”

The defence spokesman stated that the military would continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities while remaining apolitical to strengthen the democratic values of the nation.

He equally warned mischief-makers against denting the image of the armed forces with senseless videos and unconfirmed audio clips but rather channel their energy towards ensuring Nigeria strives higher in the preservation of democratic gains.

Doguwa, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, is being prosecuted by the police on charges bordering on criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt, mischief and inciting disturbance.

He was arrested by the police in Kano over the death of three persons in his constituency in the February 25 presidential election.

Fruits

Eating a range of fruits provides the body with nutrients and antioxidants that can boost overall health and reduce the risk of disease. Good choices include oranges, blueberries, apples, avocados, and bananas, but there are many more to choose from.

Fruits are an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals, and they are high in fiber. Fruits also provide a wide range of health-boosting antioxidants, including flavonoids.

Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables can reduce a person’s risk of developing heart disease, cancer, inflammation, and diabetes. Citrus fruits and berries may be especially powerful for preventing disease.

A 2014 study ranked “powerhouse” fruit and vegetables by high nutrient density and low calories. Lemons came out top of the list, followed by strawberry, orange, lime, and pink and red grapefruit.

In this article, we look at the nutrition and the many and varied health benefits of these and other fruits you can find in the supermarket.

  1. Lemons

Lemons contain vitamin C and other antioxidants that benefit health.

Lemons are a citrus fruit that people often use in traditional remedies because of their health benefits. Like other citrus fruits, they contain vitamin C and other antioxidants.

Antioxidants are essential for human health. These compounds mop up free radicals in the body that can damage the body’s cells and lead to diseases, such as cancers.

Researchers believe that the flavonoids in lemon and other citrus fruits have antibacterial, anticancer, and antidiabetic properties.

Citrus fruits, including lemons, contain active components called phytochemicals that benefit health. These include:

vitamin C

folic acid

potassium

pectin

The juice from one 48 g lemon contains the following nutrients in grams (g) or milligrams (mg):

11 calories

3.31 g carbohydrate

49 mg potassium

18.6 mg vitamin C

3 mg calcium

0.1 g of fiber

Lemons also contain thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6, folate, and vitamin A.

How to eat lemons

Use the juice of a lemon to flavor drinking water or squeeze over a salad or fish. Try adding lemon juice to boiling water with a teaspoon of honey to help soothe a sore throat. It is also possible to eat the rind of organic lemons. Some people use the rind in recipes.

  1. Strawberries

Strawberries are a juicy, red fruit with a high water content. The seeds provide plenty of dietary fiber per serving. Strawberries contain many healthful vitamins and minerals.

Of particular note, they contain anthocyanins, which are flavonoids that can help boost heart health. The fiber and potassium in strawberries can also support a healthy heart.

In one studyTrusted Source, women who ate 3 or more servings per week of strawberries and blueberries — which are both known for their high anthocyanin content — had a lower risk of having a heart attack than those with lower intake.

Strawberries and other colorful berries also contain a flavonoid called quercetin. This is a natural anti-inflammatory compound.

A serving of 3 large strawberries provides the following nutrients:

Vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant in the body. This vitamin is also essential for immune system function. It boosts immune function by helping the body to absorb iron from plant-based foods.

The human body cannot make vitamin C itself, so people need to get this vitamin from their diet. Oranges also contain high levels of pectin, which is a fiber that can keep the colon healthy by binding to chemicals that can cause cancer and removing them from the colon.

Oranges also provide the following healthful vitamins:

vitamin A, a compound that is important for healthy skin and eyesight

B-vitamins, including thiamin and folate, which help keep the nervous and reproductive systems healthy and help create red blood cells.

How to eat oranges

Some research from this review suggests that grapefruit furanocoumarins may have anticancer properties, which may be especially effective against breast cancer, skin cancer, and leukemia. Researchers still need to carry out more studies on animals and humans to confirm these properties.

People may wish to see a doctor before adding grapefruit to their diet, as it can interact with certain medications.

How to eat grapefruit

Try adding grapefruit slices to a fruit salad, or squeeze the juice into water to make a drink. Otherwise, people can buy pure grapefruit juice from the supermarket.

Enock Morrison opened the scoring for the champions in the 18th minute before Rocky Dwamena netted the second goal nine minutes later.

Asante Kotoko went into the break with a 2-0 cushioning and played exceeding well in the second half to prevent the ghosts from coming into the game.

After missing several golden opportunities, FC Samartex finally pulled one back through Ebenezer Acquah in the 89th minute, but the goal wasn’t enough as Asante Kotoko held on to register their 9th win of the season.

8,000 stalls @ Kejetia market use one ECG metre

0
Aerial view of the Kejetia market

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Kejetia Traders Association, Mr. Rueben Amer, has confirmed to The Chronicle that about 8,000 stalls in the Kumasi City Market Limited rely on a bulk Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meter.

This confirmation by the PRO follows several demands by the traders that they should be given   separate meters at the US$259 million market facility.

Apart from the load on the ECG meter, The Chronicle understands the traders had issues with the billing system as well and that the charge does not reflect what they use across board.

The PRO further told The Chronicle that his outfit understands the concerns of the traders to have separate meters  and that they had already discussed the issue with ECG.

According to him, as of now, the ECG has been able to provide them with 2000 meters out of the 8000 request they put before the power distributing company.

He said that the exercise was being done in three phases and the 2000 meters were the first tranche of the 8000 request.

He added that prefixing activities would be carried out and meter boards would be fixed at each shop, after which the Energy Commission would certify and pave way for ECG to go ahead and fix the meters for them.

These 2000 meters, Rueben said, would not be operational when fixed, owing to the fact that they could result in double billing of shop owners, because the whole market is connected to a bulk meter.

The request for these meters, according to Rueben, came at the back of skyrocketing electricity bills being paid by the shop owners, because thousands of shops in the market have been hooked to one meter.

Asked when the exercise would be over, PRO Amer disclosed that there would be a durbar by management and traders sometime in September 2024, where stakeholders such as the ECG, managers of Kumasi City Market Limited and Kejetia Traders Association would formally commission all the prepaid meters for each shop.

The ECG Ashanti Regional PRO, Mrs Grace Garshong, told The Chronicle on phone that the ECG, through the Kumasi City Market Limited, had reached a consensus and the former would provide 8000 prepaid meters to the market, adding that they were looking forward to meeting the demands of the traders.

Meanwhile, an attempt to reach the Managing Director of KCML, Duffour Addae, proved futile, as he failed to respond to calls and text messages sent to him.

The market was on Wednesday, this week, gutted by fire, which cause is yet to be determined by the Ghana National Fire Service.

The same market was flooded last week after  three hours of  heavy downpour. Several traders were counting their losses after the flooding, only to be hit by another disaster.

Nana Aziaku IV confers with Nana Kobina Nketsia V

Praying and pouring libation for the smooth administration of acting president

The acting President of the Ahanta Traditional Council, Nana Aziaku IV, has conferred with the Paramount Chief of the Essikado Traditional Area and that of Lower Dixcove, Nana Kobina Nketsiah V, and Nana Kwesi Agyemang respectively.

The meeting with the two paramount chiefs follows the confirmation of Nana Aziaku IV as acting President of Ahanta Traditional Council, following the demise of the Overlord of Ahanta, Otumfour Baidoo Bonsoe XV.

Nana Aziaku IV was the Tufuhene of the Council and Divisional Chief of Agona until his confirmation as acting President of the Ahanta Traditional Council.

Nana Aziaku, by his confirmation, would lead the Ahanta Traditional Council as customary and statutory leader until a new Paramount Chief is enstooled.

Following his successful confirmation as acting President, Nana Aziaku was introduced to the Paramount Chief of Essikado and that of Lower Dixcove at separate meetings.

At a meeting to introduce him to Nana Kobina Nketsiah V last Friday, the delegation was formed of Nana Ngya Toku IV, Chief of Damtse, Nana Nzafram IV, Divisional Chief of Himakrom, Nana Egya Kwamina IX, Divisional chief of Apremdo, Ebusuapayin Bolokwaw, head of the Royal Ahanta Family and Emmanuel Afful.

The rest are Nana Egyea Butsia X, Chief of Butre, Nana Akisi Apentsin, Queenmother of Egyambra and the Lindquist of the Chief of Butre.

Chiefs at the meeting

At the meeting, Nana Kobina Nketsiah, who welcome the new acting President, advised him to make sure there was unity, understanding, and peace in Ahanta.

He said considering that the misunderstanding that had ensued over who was to be the acting President was a sign of each attempting to enrich the culture and custom of Ahanta, there was the need for everyone to be brought on board for the development of Ahanta.

That, notwithstanding, the new acting President would need advice from the two gates despite the fact that he was the Tufuhene.

He said considering what had happened recently, if acting President Nana Aziaku failed to heed his advice, the House would be divided.

The eminent Essikado Paramount Chief told Nana Aziaku: “Tufuhene is not a small traditional position. You are feared when you are called Tufuhene,” and admonished him to bring the factions together.

Nana Kobina Nketsiah, who wished the acting President well in the new traditional position, reminded him to bring on board the children and family of the late Overlord of Ahanta.

Responding, Nana Aziaku promised to work to unify the House, also to bring everyone on board.

He conceded that given the recent misunderstanding over who was to be the acting President, if he failed to bring everyone on board, the House might be divided.

“If at a point we will have to come and seek counsel from you, we will not hesitate to do so,” he told Nana Kobina Nketsiah.

Meanwhile, the acting President has, at a meeting on Tuesday, disbanded the Standing Committee of the House, after their two year tenure in office came to an end, and is yet to appoint new members to serve on it.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior, Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, has promised the naming of the AstroTurf project at the Ashaiman Roman Down after the late Trooper Imoro Sheriff.

He said this at Zongo Laka, Ashaiman, on Thursday, when he led the Committee to comfort the family of the 21-year-old soldier who was murdered by some thugs in the early hours of March 4, this year.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, Mr. Agyepong said the community should not use the fallouts to dent the healthy relationship between civilians and the state security agencies.

“All that had happened should teach us a lesson, going forward as a country. We must not do anything to disturb the peace we are enjoying as a country, or break the good relationship between the civilian population and state security,” he said.

On his part, Dominic Nitiwul, Defence Minister, was sad to say: “This is the second time that as a Minister, I have been made to experience and bear such pain of losing a soldier after a mob action at Denkyira Obuasi, which claimed the life of Major Adam Mahama in May 2017. It is an incident that should not [be] repeated, as it doesn’t speak well of us as a nation.

“I want to say a big sorry to the family of our late brother.”

The Committee and Defence Ministry made some cash donations to the bereaved family.

Mr. Ken Agyepong also made a personal cash donation to the family and promised to fully sponsor the education of Imoro Sheriff’s younger brother up to the highest level.
