Paris photo showing Tinubu Okonjo-Oweala

The Director General of the World Trade Organisation, WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has described the attacks generated from Nigerians over the photographs she took in Paris, France as unwarranted.

Okonjo-Oweala stated this in a tweet via her verified Twitter handle on Saturday. The WTO DG had posted a photograph of him in which President Bola Tinubu was allegedly cropped out.

Okonjo-Oweala had taken the photograph during the summit for ‘A New Global Financing Pact’ convened by the French President, Emmanuel Macron.

At the summit, Tinubu projected the advocacy for widening the fiscal space, economic justice for Africa as the world accelerates the pace of energy transition, and the urgency of addressing the pressing issues of poverty and climate change.

The photograph had generated so much controversy among Nigerians.

But, reacting to the controversy generated by the , Okonjo-Oweala urged Nigerians to relax after the criticisms had heightened on social media.

The former finance minister lamented that the controversy has exposed how polarised Nigeria has become. Okonjo-Iweala stated, “Nigerians, please relax! Re Paris, Interesting attacks from both sides. This sadly shows the depth of polarization in our society.

“I post photos in the order received by accompanying staff or colleagues. Reading more into it is unwarranted. Let’s unite to build our country, not attack.”

A total of 11 out of 14 medical students were rescued on Saturday after a speedboat capsized at Marina Resort in Cross River State, south-south Nigeria.

The students, members of the Nigeria Medical Students Association (NIMSA), were on a boat cruise when the incident occurred around 3 p.m., Channels Television reported.

The Cross River police spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the incident to Channels, said efforts are being intensified to rescue the missing students.

Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman’s swearing in, the governo

Governor Umaru Fintiri has sworn in Justice Hafsat Andulrahman as the first female chief judge in Adamawa State. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Government House in Yola on Monday.

Besides the chief judge, the governor also swore in two other judges – Justice Ibrahim Sudi as the Grand Khadi and Audu Balami as the President of the Customary Court of Appeal.

While speaking at the event, Governor Fintiri described the moment as a watershed in the state’s history.

“The Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, is a consummate judge who rose through the ranks with an unblemished record in her years of service and substantive judgements to her belt,” he wrote on his official Twitter handle.

“We are making history as a government by having the first female Chief Judge in the history of the State. Her emergence is, therefore, a watershed development in gender mainstreaming and a testament that the girl-child is at liberty to rise and become anything with merit, devoid of any man-made barriers in Adamawa State.

“To parents, I must say, if we are looking for a role model for our daughters, this is a perfect place to come to – merit, right, truth, hard work, dedication, fairness and justice.”

But he said the judiciary needs to save its image. He claimed that some citizens violate the law and ask the aggrieved person(s) to go to court because they (violators) can manipulate the course of justice.

The situation does not only rob the victims of justice but dents the image of the judiciary as the last hope of the common man, Fintiri added.

Russian troops withdraw from Moscow after mercenary revolt ends but trouble remains for Putin

0

Russian troops deployed to protect the capital withdrew Sunday after a mercenary forces beat a retreat. But the short-lived revolt could have long-term consequences for President Vladimir Putin’s two-decade hold on power and his war in Ukraine.

Putin’s image as a tough leader had already been badly bruised by the Ukraine war, which has dragged on for 16 months and claimed huge numbers of Russian troops.

Saturday’s march toward Moscow by forces under the command of his onetime protege, Yevgeny Prigozhin, exposed further weaknesses, many analysts said.

It also meant some of the best forces fighting for Russia in Ukraine were pulled from that battlefield: Prigozhin’s own Wagner troops and Chechen ones sent to stop them.

After calling for an armed rebellion aimed at ousting Russia’s defense minister, Prigozhin and his fighters appeared to seize control of the Russian military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don that oversee fighting in Ukraine.

They then advanced towards Moscow largely unhindered. Russian media reported that they downed several helicopters and a military communications plane. The Defense Ministry has not commented.

They were halted only by a deal to send Prigozhin to neighboring Belarus, which has supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Charges against him of mounting an armed rebellion will be dropped, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, and Prigozhin ordered his troops back to their field camps.

The government also said it would not prosecute Wagner fighters who took part, while those who did not join in would offered contracts by the Defense Ministry.

Though Putin had vowed earlier to punish those behind the armed uprising, Peskov defended the reversal, saying Putin’s “highest goal” was “to avoid bloodshed and internal confrontation with unpredictable results.”

Commentators on social media over the weekend noted the irony of Prigozhin dodging prosecution for an armed rebellion while many Russians who merely speak out against the war in Ukraine have been handed lengthy prison sentences.

Though the deal ended the immediate crisis, it may have set in motion a longer-term one, analysts said.

“For a dictatorship built on the idea of unchallenged power, this was an extreme humiliation, and it’s hard to see the genie of doubt ever being forced back into the bottle,” O’Brien said. “So, if Prigozhin might have lost in the short term, Putin is likely to be the long-term loser.”

Still many questions remain.

Prigozhin, who sent out a series of audio and video updates during his revolt, has gone silent since the Kremlin announced the deal.

It’s not clear if he’s in Belarus yet or whether any of his Wagner troops would follow him.

In response to questions from The Associated Press, Prigozhin’s press office replied that he could not reply immediately but “will answer the questions when he gets a normal connection.”

Video taken by The Associated Press in Rostov-on-Don showed people cheering Wagner troops as they departed. Some ran to shake hands with Prigozhin, who was riding in an SUV.

The regional governor later said that all of the troops had left the city. Russian news agencies also reported that Lipetsk authorities confirmed Wagner forces had left that region, which sits on the road to Moscow from Rostov.

Moscow had braced for the arrival of the Wagner forces by erecting checkpoints with armored vehicles and troops on the city’s southern edge.

About 3,000 Chechen soldiers were pulled from fighting in Ukraine and rushed there early Saturday, state television in Chechnya reported. Russian troops armed with machine guns put up checkpoints on Moscow’s southern outskirts. Crews dug up sections of highways to slow the march.

By Sunday afternoon, the troops had withdrawn from the capital, and people swarmed the streets and flocked to cafes. Traffic returned to normal and roadblocks and checkpoints were removed, but Red Square remained close to visitors. On highways leading to Moscow, crews repaired roads ripped up just hours earlier in panic.

Anchors on state-controlled television stations cast the deal ending the crisis as a show of Putin’s wisdom and aired footage of Wagner troops retreating from Rostov-on-Don to the relief of local residents who feared a bloody battle for control of the city.

People there who were interviewed by Channel 1 hailed Putin’s role.

But the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War warned that “the Kremlin now faces a deeply unstable equilibrium.”

The “deal is a short-term fix, not a long-term solution,” wrote the institute, which has tracked the war in Ukraine from the beginning.

Prigozhin had demanded the ouster of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, whom Prigozhin has long criticized in withering terms for his conduct of the war in Ukraine.

The U.S. had intelligence that Prigozhin had been building up his forces near the border with Russia for some time. That conflicts with Prigozhin’s claim that his rebellion was a response to an attack on his camps in Ukraine on Friday by the Russian military.

In announcing the rebellion, Prigozhin accused Russian forces of targeting the Wagner camps in Ukraine with rockets, helicopter gunships and artillery. He alleged that Gen. Valery Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff, ordered the attacks following a meeting with Shoigu in which they decided to destroy the military contractor.

The Defense Ministry denied attacking the camps.

Congressional leaders were briefed on the Wagner buildup earlier last week, a person familiar with the matter said. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. The U.S. intelligence briefing was first reported by CNN.

A possible motivation for Prigozhin’s rebellion was the Russian Defense Ministry’s demand, which Putin backed, that private companies sign contracts with it by July 1. Prigozhin had refused to do it.

Ukrainians hoped the Russian infighting would create opportunities for their army to take back territory seized by Russian forces.

“These events will have been of great comfort to the Ukrainian government and the military,” said Ben Barry, senior fellow for land warfare at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Wagner troops have played a crucial role in the Ukraine war, capturing the eastern city of Bakhmut, an area where the bloodiest and longest battles have taken place.

The Kremlin’s offer of amnesty to Prigozhin was negotiated by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, which might have raised his stature in his relationship with Putin.

The 62-year-old Prigozhin, a former convict, has longstanding ties to Putin and won lucrative Kremlin catering contracts that earned him the nickname “Putin’s chef.”

Wagner has sent military contractors to Libya, Syria and several African countries, as well as Ukraine.

Home remedies for burning feet

0
Burning feet

The sensation of burning feet is a common disorder. It can occur as an isolated issue or as a symptom of another condition.

Medical professionals call the sensation of burning in the feet or lower leg burning feet syndrome (BFS).

BFS often causes the feet to become uncomfortably hot and painful. Symptoms of BFS can be mild or severe, depending on the cause.

BFS is common in older adults, and can become more intense at night.

BFS not only affects the soles of the feet, but can also affect the tops of the feet, the ankles, and the lower legs.

Diabetes is a common cause of burning feet. However, BFS is also a symptom of a number of other conditions.

This article looks at the causes of BFS and 9 home remedies to treat it.

Causes

Jasmin Merdan/Getty Images

Peripheral neuropathy, commonly called nerve damage, is a common cause of BFS. However, nerve damage itself often results from another medical condition.

Medical conditions that can cause nerve damage and BFS include:

Diabetes

Diabetes can cause high blood sugar levels. Prolonged high blood sugar levels can damage blood vessels and nerves. The name for this type of nerve damage is diabetic neuropathy.

Up to 50% of people with diabetes have, or will at some point have, diabetic neuropathy. One of the main symptoms of diabetic neuropathy is BFS.

Small fiber sensory neuropathy (SFSN)

This condition causes pain and discomfort in the feet and hands.

SFSN causes the small sensory cutaneous nerves to become damaged. These nerves provide sensory feedback between the skin and the brain.

SFSN is often linked to diabetes or an impaired glucose metabolism.

Symptoms of SFSN include a cold-like pain, tingling, or pins and needles.

Heavy alcohol use

Chronic alcohol consumption can cause alcoholic neuropathy, which damages the nerves in the body. It is one of the most common symptoms of heavy alcohol use.

The damaged nerves can cause a person to experience BFS.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) causes damage to the peripheral nerves.

Symptoms usually begin in the feet and lower legs. Symptoms include BFS, weakness in the foot and lower leg muscles, foot deformities, and difficulty lifting the foot while walking.

CMT is one of the most common inherited neurological disorders in the United States.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)

CRPS is a broad term that describes pain and inflammation that follows an injury to a person’s arm or leg. Common causes of CRPS include fractures, surgery, and sprains.

Symptoms of CRPS include BFS, stiff joints, wasting away or excess bone growth, changes in skin texture, and swelling of the affected limb.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome of the wrist but occurs in the ankle.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs as a result of compression and damage to the nerve running along the inside of the ankle and foot.

It can cause a tingling or burning sensation in the feet.

Other causes of BFS

Other causes of BFS unrelated to nerve damage include:

erythromelalgia

malnutrition

underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)

athlete’s foot

kidney disease

HIV/AIDS

chemotherapy

Home remedies for burning feet

Treatment for BFS depends on the underlying cause. A doctor may treat BFS using the following:

antifungal prescription

shoe inserts or change of shoe

vitamin supplements

thyroid supplements

electrical nerve stimulation

magnetic therapy

laser or light therapy

There are also a number of home remedies for BFS that a person can try. Here are 9 that may provide relief:

  1. Soaking feet in cold water or an ice bath

Soaking the feet in cold water can help temporarily relieve the symptoms of BFS.

However, a person suffering from erythromelalgia should avoid this, as this may damage their skin.

  1. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE)

A person can help reduce the symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome by using RICE. This involves resting the foot, applying ice to the ankle, using compression, and elevating the foot.

RICE can help reduce swelling and inflammation, which can help reduce the symptoms of BFS.

  1. Epsom salt

People often use Epsom salt to treat a variety of issues, including pain and the symptoms of athlete’s foot.

Epsom salt is a natural compound that contains magnesium sulfate. It has a number of uses including:

decreasing the symptoms of athlete’s foot

reducing inflammation

exfoliating the skin

reducing odor

relieving constipation

People place Epsom salt into warm water, before soaking their feet in the mixture for 20–30 minutes.

Epsom salt foot baths can treat the symptoms of BFS. However, a person with diabetes should check with their doctor before using an Epsom salt bath. This is because Epsom salt may raise the risk of foot damage in people with diabetes.

  1. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can combat bacteria, fungi, and other harmful microbes.

Soaking the feet in a foot bath consisting of warm water and apple cider vinegar may be an effective way of treating athlete’s foot. However, there is no scientific evidence to prove how effective this treatment may be.

  1. Turmeric supplements

Turmeric contains the compound curcumin. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects and it may be an effective treatment for several skin conditions.

Curcumin is also an effective treatment for a variety of neurological disorders.

A person may be able to use turmeric supplements to treat BFS related to damaged nerves and other nerve pain. A person can take turmeric in supplement form, or they can take 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder with 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper up to three times per day.

One 2013 study suggests that if a person takes curcumin in the early stages of neuropathy it may have a positive effect. The study states that curcumin can help prevent chronic neuropathy from developing.

  1. Fish oil

Fish oil has anti-inflammatory properties which are helpful in reducing pain and discomfort. If a person has BFS as a result of diabetes they may wish to treat their BFS with fish oil.

One 2018 study suggests that fish oil can slow the progression and even reverse diabetic neuropathy.

Fish oil supplements are available over the counter (OTC). A person can take between 2,400 and 5,400 mg of fish oil per day.

  1. Ginger

Ginger oil has anti-inflammatory properties and may be an effective treatment for BTS.

A 2014 study showed that Swedish massage with aromatic ginger oil was more effective in reducing back pain and disability than traditional Thai massage.

Many ginger oils are available OTC.

A 2020 study of mice looked at the use of ginger extract. It suggests that ginger extract may be an effective treatment against diabetic neuropathy.

However, determining the efficacy of ginger for the specific treatment of BFS and neuropathic pain requires more research.

  1. Lidocaine or capsaicin

Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic. Medical professionals often use lidocaine to numb the skin before they carry out certain procedures such as taking blood.

Capsaicin is present in chilli peppers and offers natural pain relief. One 2011 study showed that capsaicin is effective in helping manage pain.

Some medical professionals propose topical creams containing capsaicin and lidocaine patches as effective treatments for the symptoms of diabetic neuropathic pain. They are both common treatments for BFS in people with diabetes.

However, there is little evidence to support their use.

Topical lidocaine is also a common treatment for pain associated with SFSN in both patch and gel form.

  1. Foot massage

Massage increases blood flow to an area of the body. Therefore, if a person suffers from BFS they can massage their feet to improve circulation and blood flow to the areas that need it. This can help treat some of the symptoms of BFS.

One 2015 study showed that Thai foot massage helped people with diabetic neuropathy improve their balance, the range of movement in their foot, and their foot sensation.
