The campaigners educating the people before the free medical screening

Dr Seyram Letsa, Acting Medical Director of Miracle Life Hospital (MLH), in Ho, at the weekend noted that high blood pressure cannot be cured but can only be controlled.

He, therefore, called on those with the disease to regularly check their blood pressure level and always take their medications.

Dr Letsa made the call in an interaction with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a free medical screening programme organized by MLH for the people of Adaklu Kodzobi in the Adaklu district.

The health screening formed part of a high blood pressure prevention campaign the hospital is undertaking in Ho and its environs. The campaign is on the theme; ‘Let’s Fight the Silent Killer.”

Dr Letsa said the campaign which was being sponsored by AVL Holdings Ghana Limited, State Insurance Company and Dr Archibald Letsa, Volta Regional Minister was their corporate responsibility to the people.

Dr Letsa said one out of every four people in the country has high blood pressure and noted that this was due to their lifestyles.

He mentioned some of the risk factors of the disease such as overweight, too much salt intake, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, among others.

The Medical Director said the disease, if not controlled, could lead to heart attack. He intimated that it could also cause excessive damage to the heart, kidneys and eyes.

Dr Letsa said because the disease is a silent killer, “we all need to periodically check our blood pressure level so as not to be taken by events.”

KNUST ready to recycle plastic wastes for industrial purposes

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is set to mobilise and recycle plastic waste of Ayeduase, a community within the University, for Industrial Purposes.

The University has therefore donated 50 customised waste bins categorised into organic and plastic wastes to the community. Professor Elis Owusu Dabo, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, KNUST, at a community engagement at Ayeduase said plastic pollution alters habitats and natural processes, reducing the ecosystems’ ability to adapt to climate change, which affects millions of people and their livelihoods.

He indicated that the impact of plastic debris on marine systems include; ingestion, suffocation and entanglement of hundreds of marine species such as seabirds, whales, fishes and turtles.

Since plastics were non-biodegradable it is important to recycle them to free the environment and other living organisms, which could be exposed to the effects of their pollution, he explained.

Prof. Dabo said the KNUST had established a company on campus about a year ago to recycle plastic waste and it is important to bring in the waste of peripheral communities for recycling, to increase the tonnage of its production.

He said the University would subsequently hook in all other communities around the Bomso, Ahinsan, Gyinyase and Ayigya to the plastic recycling course to reduce pollution from plastics in these areas.

The Pro VC said the University would continue working with communities to ensure clean and healthy environments, which is of great importance to the institution.

“All the communities around us are of great importance to us, they are part of our sustenance as a university, because most of our students live in the hostels in these areas and we cannot leave them behind,” he assured.

Apart from the plastic recycling, the KNUST is also aimed to provide about 150 street light bulbs to enhance security and improve general sanitation conditions at Ayeduase.

Nana Opoku Bawuah Agyemang Bonsafo III, the Chief of Ayeduase, commended KNUST for the close partnerships with communities over the years.

He implored all residents of the area to embrace the exercise by the University and warned that the provision of waste bins did not mean people should discharge their households’ refuse into them, explaining that the branded bins were for segregation of plastic waste.

Prof. Paul Sarfo-Mensah, Head, Bureau of Integrated Rural Development, the lead research department for the plastic recycling, called for the maximum participation of the community to ensure success.

Cardi B was proud of Offset and Quavo as they reunited for a tribute to Takeoff at the 2023 BET Awards. On Sunday (June 25), Cardi took to Instagram, where she recorded the Migos’ special performance and gave a genuine reaction to the unexpected development.

The Bronx native yelled with glee at her television screen, continuously shouting “Yeah!” before admitting she was ready to shed a tear. “I’m ’bouta cry, I’m really bouta cry,” she said.

“I know [Quavo and Offset] wanna cry.” Cardi also hit Twitter to share her love for her hubby and extended family burying the hatchet. “I can’t take it right now… proud of the boys,” she affectionately tweeted.

Quavo and Offset honored Take at the 2023 BET Awards at the Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, their first performance since the latter’s untimely death. The emotional homage saw the pair showing love to the rapper, né Kirshnik Khari Ball, with a rocket silhouette glowing in the screen behind them while rapping to “Hotel Lobby.”

Then, as the clouds turned purple, the rocket took off into the sky as they began performing their 2016 hit song, “Bad and Boujee.”

Their BET Awards appearance arrived on the heels of the pair squashing their beef to celebrate Take’s birthday on Sunday (June 18). According to TMZ, the Migos were in Atlanta, joining family and friends to honor Ball’s life.

Nigerian skitmaker remanded for allegedly sexualising minor in video

A Family Court sitting at Iyaganku, Ibadan, on Monday, ordered the remand of a skit maker, Maruf Abdullahi, popularly known as Trinity Guy, over the alleged sexual exploitation of a 10-year-old girl.

The court also arraigned Isiaka Ahmed, 40, and his wife, Rofiat, 29, who are parents of the victim on two-count charge of conspiracy and sexual abuse and exploitation.

This comes after the Nigeria Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi had last week called for the skit maker’s arrest following a trending video of his dangerous pranks.

The Magistrate, Mrs P.O. Adetuyibi, who did not take the defendants’ plea for want of jurisdiction, said that the case file had been filed and duplicated at the Oyo State Ministry of Justice.

She remanded the three defendants to Agodi Correctional Facility, Ibadan. The case is expected to be called on July 11.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Oluwakemi Arowosaye, had told the court that the three defendants conspired together to sexually abuse the girl.

The prosecution said that the skit maker Trinity, on December 17, 2022, sexually abused and exploited the girl at Kuolaa area of Ibadan.

According to the prosecution, the offences are contrary to Section 35 (1) and punishable under Section 35 (2) of Oyo State Child Rights Law, 2006.

The prosecutor said that the offences also contravened Section 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

However, if the skit maker is found guilty of the offence, he is liable to 15 years imprisonment under the Child Rights Law, 2006.

2023 BET Awards: Burna Boy wins Best International Act for a fourth time

Nigerian musician Burna Boy won the Best International Act award at the 2023 BET Awards ceremony.

The event took place on Sunday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, U.S.

This is Burna Boy’s fourth Best International Act award. he dorst won it in 2019 then subsequently in 2020 and 2021.

He beat Aya Nakamura (France), Ayra Starr (Nigeria), Central Cee (UK), Ella Mai (UK), Ko (South Africa), L7nnon (Brazil), Stormzy (UK), Tiakola (France) and Uncle Waffles (Swaziland) to win the award.

Singer/songwriter Tems took home the “Best Collaboration” award for her contribution to Future’s ‘Wait For U’ featuring Drake.

Meanwhile, despite winning the Best International Act, Burna Boy lost the Best Male R&B / Pop Artist to Usher and Chris Brown who were tied for the award.

SZA and Beyoncé each won three times, including tying for the Album of the Year Award.

HipHop star Busta Rhymes received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the event that marked 50 years of HipHop.

2023 BET Awards: Camidoh misses out on Best New International Act

Ghanaian artiste, Camidoh recently missed out on the 2023 BET Viewers Choice: Best New International Act award. The honor ultimately went to the talented Cameroonian singer/songwriter, Libianca.

Camidoh was nominated alongside Asake, FLO, Libianca, Maureen, MC Ryan SP, Paris Cooper, Raye, and Wereno.

While the outcome may not have favored Camidoh, West Africa made a strong impression at the renowned international award ceremony.

Nigerian singer Davido, in particular, captivated the audience with an electrifying performance at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. Showcasing a medley of his chart-topping hits “Feel” and “Unavailable” from his latest album, ‘Timeless,’ the DMW Boss had the crowd bouncing and streaming.

This remarkable display of talent solidified Davido as the second Nigerian artiste to grace the stage of “Culture’s Biggest Night,” following in the footsteps of Fireboy DML, who performed last year with the smash hit “Peru.”

Greek PM in resounding electoral win, as far right makes gains

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the leader of Greece’s center-right New Democracy party, has comfortably won a second four-year term as prime minister, on a night that also saw gains for the far right.

Mitsotakis is set to return to the prime minister’s office in a stronger position with his party’s resounding victory in Sunday’s elections, which were dominated by financial stability and cost-of-living issues.

With nearly 100% of the vote counted, New Democracy had garnered over 40% of the vote. Its main opposition, leftist party Syriza trailed far behind in the preliminary results with over 17%.

A total of eight parties, including centrist PASOK-KINAL and leftist KKE, crossed the 3% threshold to enter the Greek parliament. They included groups on the far-right; the biggest surprise in Sunday’s vote was the entry to parliament of the little known, strongly anti-migrant Spartans party, backed by disgraced former lawmaker Ilias Kasidiaris, who is currently serving a prison sentence of over 13 years for membership in a criminal organization.

Guatemalan presidential frontrunners set for run-off

The two frontrunners in Guatemala’s presidential elections will face a run-off vote, the electoral commission has said, after no candidate in the divisive contest secured the 50 percent needed to win the election outright at the weekend.

The country’s electoral commission said on Monday morning that the results were “practically definitive” as former First Lady Sandra Torres and fellow centre-left candidate Bernardo Arevalo emerged from Sunday’s vote as the top two contenders.

With 98 percent of the votes counted, Torres of the National Unity of Hope (UNE) party had 15.7 percent support and Arevalo of Movimiento Semilla (the Seed Movement) had 11.8 percent, according to the commission’s preliminary tally.

“We’re happy,” Torres said during a news conference, expressing optimism at the second round, which is expected to be held on August 20. “We’re going to win, against whoever it may be.”

But Sunday’s election saw low turnout and numerous blank ballots cast, with many voters expressing doubt that the next government would be able to address long-standing problems in the Central American nation, namely unemployment, security and corruption.
