The king of Igbo Community in Ghana, Dr Chukwudi J Ihenetu

The founder of the Eze Igbo Ghana Foundation, Dr.Chukwudi J. Ihenetu, has revealed the intentions of his foundation to build an ultramodern Rehabilitation Centers in Ghana and Nigeria to support victims of drug abuse.

The Philanthropist and human rights activist, who is also the King of the Igbo community in Ghana, added that the rehabilitation center will serve as a place that will create an opportunity for inmates to learn technical, creative and interpersonal skills, which will include farming, cosmetology and driving, among others.

Speaking in an interview with The Chronicle on Monday, August 31, 2023 Dr. Ihenetu said the foundation will give inmates who successfully complete their program at the center start-up capital to build on their skills, once they are out.

This, he said, will help equip and sustain them as they return to their various societies. He mentioned stigmatisation and discrimination as two of the major factors that hinder addicts from seeking the needed help, especially those who have been cleaned.

The Chief added that stigmatising a person who has stopped abusing drugs could trap them in the act again.

“This is part of the reasons why I speak against stigmatisation and for our societies to recognise the crucial role they have to play in the fight against the canker of drug abuse and drug trafficking,” he added.

He urged drug peddlers to channel their resources into genuine business areas instead of selling substances and drugs that end up destroying precious lives in the process.

“Their focus should not be on the profits they gain but rather the negative impacts their illegal activities are having on people and society at large.”

Speaking about why his foundation chose to embark on the campaign against drug abuse, Dr. Ihenetu explained that seeing young people in almost every community abusing all kinds of drugs made him decide to come up with the initiative to wage war against the menace.

He revealed that the foundation has over the past years organised youth empowerment programs in both Ghana and Nigeria, including the just-ended walk against drug trafficking and drug abuse held in Accra.

He called on the clergy, Imams, teachers, parents, traditional rulers, opinion leaders and the media to join the fight against substance abuse and drug trafficking, calling the fight a shared responsibility.

“Drug abuse is even more dangerous among the youth because they are the future leaders,” he said.

According to the King, education on the dangers of drug abuse will be factored into the celebration of the Igbo New Yam Festival, which will come off on September 17, 2023 in Accra.

The Bono Regional Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council (NPC), Alhaji Suallah Abdallah Quandah, has appealed to traditional authorities in the region to help in addressing the increasing cases of chieftaincy disputes to ensure social cohesion.

Madam Justina Owusu Banahene, Bono regional minister

Alhaji Quandah made the appeal at the opening of a stakeholders’ dialogue on chieftaincy and land disputes in Sunyani, on the theme: “Managing and Resolving Chieftaincy and Land Disputes through Dialogue and Consensus Building.”

The dialogue was organised by the NPC, in honour of the late Paramount Queenmother of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Nana Yaa Nyamaa Poduo II.

It was attended by Chiefs and Queens, representatives of the Christian Council of Churches, Islamic Clerics and District/Municipal Chief Executives.

Alhaji Quandah said because some of the feuding factions have taken entrenched positions it makes resolutions very difficult and subsequently threaten the peace of the region.

He pointed out that nine out of the 17 paramountcies in the region are currently battling with chieftaincy disputes, which require urgent resolution to ensure peace for development, he said.

“We are trying our best to resolve these disputes, but our efforts seem meaningless because some of the Chiefs and Queens have taken entrenched positions,” Alhaji Quandah said.

Suallah Abdallah Quandah

According to him, “lack of codified succession procedures, and the desire to control resources increased royalties and positional blindness,” which are some of the factors fueling chieftaincy disputes in the region.

The Paramount Chief of the Dwenem-Awasu Traditional Area in the Jaman South municipality, Nana Bofo Bene IV, was worried that chieftaincy and land disputes have over the years have exposed the chieftaincy institution to public ridicule and disrepute.

He, therefore, appealed to the feuding factions in the disputed paramountcies to bury their differences and cooperate with the relevant stakeholders to build peaceful communities.

The Bono Regional Minister, Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, acknowledged the contributions of traditional leaders in promoting socio-cultural values and sustainable development and hoped that the NPC would do more to resolve disputes that threaten peace in the region.

She noted that peace building and sustenance are shared and collective responsibility, hence the need for everybody to support in that direction.

The government will provide land and on-site infrastructure like roads as its subsidy for the new affordable housing projects, with private developers set to raise funds for the construction.

The government-provided infrastructure will also include drainage, electricity, water, social services, and mortgage subsidies.

This initiative is to depart from the old method of investing in such projects with public funds, which mostly yielded no profit to the state.

President Akufo-Addo addressing the gathering

The idea is contained in the Akufo-Addo government’s revised National Affordable Housing Programme, launched on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 in Pokuase, near Amasaman, in the Greater Accra Region.

The initial project, under the revised National Affordable Housing Programme include the 8000 Pokuase project, which sod was cut at the launch to be built on a 203-acre lot and 6000 housing units on a 200-acre land in Dedesua in the Ashanti region. The houses will comprise studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments.

DEVELOPERS

Some five developers, both local and international, have been selected to participate in the government’s revised national affordable housing programme. They are Rehoboth Properties, State Housing Company Limited, Devtraco Group Limited, Frank Pauls Ventures Company Limited and Douja Promotion Addoha Groupe Limited.

COST

After completion, a studio unit will cost US$13,800 at the maximum price; a one-bedroom will cost US$20,700; a two-bedroom will cost US$34,500 and a three-bedroom will cost US$42,550.

The amounts are payable in Ghana Cedis at the prevailing Bank of Ghana exchange rate and with payment terms.

POKUASE

The first project, which is the 8000 units to be constructed in Pokuase, will be in two phases, with phase one being the completion of 4000 of the houses in 18 months.

The second phase of the project will be the completion of the other 4000 housing units on the same timeline.

COMMITMENT

Addressing a short ceremony to launch the revised housing programme and also cut sod for the Pokuase project, President Akufo-Addo said the project was a testament to his government’s unwavering commitment to address the pressing housing needs of workers in Ghana.

“This housing project embodies our dedication to prioritising housing as a fundamental need of our people…Together, we are breaking down barriers and creating pathways for our citizens, regardless of their circumstances to access their homes.

“Our commitment to ensuring housing security for all Ghanaians remains resolute, and we will continue to explore innovative approaches to meet the diverse needs of the Ghanaian people,” he said.

The President noted that rapid urbanisation posed a major challenge to housing, exacerbating the affordability gap and hindering the implementation of effective housing initiatives in the country.

With a current urban population of 58 percent, an urbanisation rate of 3.3 percent and with a housing deficit of 1.8 million units, he said the pressing issue of housing had become a critical developmental challenge for the nation.

He said the government initiated the revised National Affordable Housing Programme to create a favourable environment that reduces the risk associated with affordable housing and encourages private investment in the sector.

“The objective is to increase the production of affordable housing units and establish a reliable and sustainable demand side of the housing market that would be accessible to all Ghanaians…This will ensure houses are accessible to all sections of society,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo arriving

The Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye indicated that the launch of the programme and the groundbreaking were “fulfillment of a charge” given him by the President, prior to his appointment, “to ensure that affordable housing is provided for Ghanaians.”

In his remarks, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, pledged that his ministry would continue to work to provide more public lands for such laudable projects.

Supporters of Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum gather to show their support for him in Niamey on July 26, 2023

West African regional bloc ECOWAS sent a delegation to Niger on Wednesday to negotiate with the military officers who seized power in last week’s coup, while regional defence chiefs began a two-day meeting in neighbouring Nigeria.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has imposed sanctions on Niger and said it could authorise the use of force if the coup leaders do not reinstate elected President Mohamed Bazoum within a week from last Sunday.

“The military option is the very last option on the table, the last resort, but we have to prepare for the eventuality,” said Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace and security.

“There is a need to demonstrate that we cannot only bark but can bite,” he told reporters in Abuja.

The delegation to Niger is being led by former Nigerian military leader Abdulsalami Abubakar, who was expected in Niamey on Wednesday to start talks with the military government, Musah said.

Other details about the mission remain unclear. Amos Lungu, spokesperson for the ECOWAS Commission, did not respond to Al Jazeera’s requests for comment.

The military government in Niger is led by the former head of Bazoum’s presidential guard, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, who detained Bazoum in his palace on July 26 and later declared himself head of state.

Donald Trump indictment: Ex-president charged with bid to overturn 2020 election

Rioters clash with police at the front doors of the Capitol on 6 January 2021

Former US President Donald Trump has been charged with plotting to overturn his 2020 election defeat.

He is accused of four counts including conspiracy to defraud the US, tampering with a witness and conspiracy against the rights of citizens.

The indictment caps an inquiry into events surrounding the 6 January 2021 riot at the US Capitol.

Mr Trump, 77, who is again running for president, denies wrongdoing. On social media he called the case “ridiculous”.

The Republican politician has already been charged in two other cases: with mishandling classified files and falsifying business records to cover up a hush-money payment to a porn star.

The election investigation has focused on Mr Trump’s actions in the two-month period between his loss to Joe Biden and the riot in Washington DC, where his supporters stormed Congress as lawmakers certified the Democrat’s victory.

The man leading the inquiry, special counsel Jack Smith, did not charge the former president with inciting the mob that day but he told reporters: “The attack on our nation’s capital on January 6 2021 was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy.

“As described in the indictment it was fuelled by lies.”

Mr Smith wrapped up his brief statement by pledging to seek “a speedy trial”, while emphasising that the former president “must be assumed innocent until proven guilty”.

Mr Trump is due to appear in court on Thursday in Washington DC.

Bring Patience & co to court …Prosecution ordered

0
Court

The police prosecution, led by DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye, has been ordered by an Accra Circuit Court to present two former domestic workers and three others next week Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

The order follows the inability of the prosecution to present Patience Botwe, Sarah Agyei, Benjamin Sowah, Kweku Botwe, and Malik Dauda before the court yesterday.

However, DSP Nyamekye explained that the investigators in charge of bringing the accused persons to court had been detailed to the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, to conduct further investigations.

Per the prosecution’s submission before the court, the investigators had made significant strides with respect to the case, by arresting two more suspects.

Although the court was not given details of the current arrest and the role the persons played in the alleged US$1 million and other items theft case, he said seven people would be standing trial.

He also informed the court that the Attorney-General’s (A-G) Office had indicated to the police that it would be taking over the prosecution of the case.

Regardless of that, Mrs. Appiah, the presiding Judge, maintained that the accused persons were to be brought before her on Tuesday.

She also declined a bail application filed by counsel for Patience Botwe and her father, Kweku Botwe.

So far, it is Benjamin Sowah and Malik Dauda, all alleged lovers of Patience, who were yet to have legal representation.

Counsel for Sarah Agyei said it is disrespect on the part of the A-G’s Office to instruct the police prosecutor to inform the court that it was taking over the case.

He told the court that while the prosecution continued to drag its feet in the matter, it was human dignity that was at stake, as most of the accused persons were on remand.

Meanwhile, Sarah Agyei, who has been granted bail, continues to remain in police custody, due to challenges being posted by the police.

In an interview the counsel explained that the A-G’s Office could have gone to the court to deliver that message, and not to instruct the police prosecutor to speak on its behalf.

To him, the A-G’s claim of taking over the matter was nothing but a calculated gimmick to deny the accused persons the justice that they deserved.

The counsel also added that the police was barring his effort to have Sarah Agyei’s GH¢1 million bail executed was wrong.

According to him, instead of the Registrar interpreting the orders of the court, the Special Intelligence Unit of the Ghana Police had taken that responsibility upon its self.

Meanwhile, he said that per the practice, interpreting court order was the sole duty of the Registrar, and the only role of the police was to verify the abode of the sureties.

He was positive his client was innocent and it would be proven.

Background

The facts are that Patience, also known as Maabena, as well as Sarah, were domestic workers of the complainants, Daniel Osei Kuffour and his wife, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

Somewhere in June, this year, the complainants lodged a complaint with the police after detecting the theft of cash and other personal belongings.

Preceding the report, Patience was caught by Mr. Kuffour in the room he shares with his wife.

This happened after Mr. Kuffour had returned from town only to find out that their bedroom was open and an unusual noise was coming from inside.

Mr. Kuffour entered the room and found A1 hiding behind the door.

It was said that Patience accessed the couple’s room with a duplicate key.

Missing cash, US$1 million, €300,000 and GH¢35,000, and other personal effects, jewellery valued at US$95,000, six pieces of Kente cloth worth GH¢90,000, perfumes worth US$1,400, were detected missing by the complainant’s after the incident.

Patience escaped to Tamale and while there rented a 3-bedroom apartment at the cost of GH¢105,600, as well as a store at the cost of GH¢120,000.

The police arrested her upon intelligence and a spot search conducted in the apartment she was sharing with her boyfriend, Benjamin, revealed monies in currencies of US$40,000 and GH¢72,619.70.

Patience allegedly bought a 3-bedroom house at a cost of US$70,000 at Amrahia and furnished it with the following brand new items – a double-decker refrigerator, water dispenser, a television set, washing machine, and a chest cooler among others.

She also bought a Hyundai Elantra at the cost of GH¢80,000 for Benjamin, who also sold it to purchase a Honda Civic.

Patience also gave her father GH¢50,000, and GH¢100,000 to Malik (her ex-boyfriend).

The court heard that Patience implicated Sarah during interrogation, that she was her accomplice.

That when they were working together in the complainants’ house, Patience used to keep watch at the main gate to enable Sarah to enter the couple’s room to steal, after which they shared the spoils.

Sarah was arrested at Budumburam, and during investigation, it came to light that she used her portion of the stolen money to build a 3-bedroom house at where she was arrested.

As a result, the accused were charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, stealing and dishonestly receiving.

They have all pleaded not guilty and with the exception of Sarah, the rest were remanded into police custody.
