The newly constructed concrete pavement road

AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine has commissioned a 1.4-kilometer concrete pavement road it reconstructed at Nhyieso on the Obuasi-Dunkwa highway.

For some time now, the newly reconstructed road has been in a very bad state, posing safety risks to motorists and pedestrians.

The stretch before the reconstruction

As a result, AngloGold Ashanti, in consultation with the Department of Urban Roads decided to refurbish the dilapidated section with concrete pavement to ensure safer and more efficient transportation for businesses, travelers, and community residents.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Senior Manager Sustainability of the company, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo, expressed delight with the successful completion of the reconstructed road project.

“This milestone achievement underscores AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine’s commitment to its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan, which prioritizes improving communities’ infrastructure to bridge gaps and address critical needs of the communities in which it operates”.

Mr. Baidoo expressed gratitude to the traditional and local authorities, the contractor, the Obuasi Mine Project team, and community members along the Obuasi-Dunkwa highway for their cooperation, expertise, and support throughout the reconstruction process.

The Chief Executive for Obuasi Municipality, Mr. Elijah Adansi Bonah, noted that the level of deterioration on that stretch was massive and commended the company for swiftly coming in to save the situation with the concrete Pavement.

The Odikro of Nhyieso, Nana Peprah Abu Bonsra, said pregnant women who need to go to antenatal clinic at Obuasi could not stand the ordeal they had to go through while crossing the much-deteriorated part of the road and commended the company for coming to the aid of both drivers and the general public.

Report positively on our economic progress -Finance Ministry urges journalists

Eva Esselba Mends, Chief Director, Ministry of Finance

The Chief Director of the Ministry of Finance has encouraged journalists to be diligent and positive in their reportage about the nation’s economic progress.

The Ministry held a technical briefing for selected journalists on the Mid-Year Budget Review delivered by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta to parliament on Monday, July 31, 2023.

In her welcome address Madam Eva Mends, stated that the Ministry was committed to continually engage the media as strategic partners in nation building.

It also gave updates on Ghana’s macroeconomic statistics, the country’s path to debt sustainability, and progress towards the impending International Monetary Fund Review.

The 2023 mid-year budget review focused on revenue and tax administration enhancement measures for economic recovery following the Covid pandemic and other global economic vulnerabilities.

Finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta presented the 2023 mid-year budget review to Parliament, which is in accordance with Article 179 of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921).

The presentation to the Legislature reviewed the government’s 2023 Economic Policy and Financial Statement that was delivered on November 24, 2022.

Key among the presentation was no mention of additional taxes which could come as a relief to citizens and the business community at large.

Ken Ofori-Atta also told lawmakers that government did not need or require a supplementary budget. This effectively meant government was not seeking any additional funding for the projects it outlined in the main 2023 budget.

Instead, the government revised Appropriation, that is, its allocations were revised from GH¢227.7 billion as presented and approved in November 2022 to GH¢206.0 billion.

The minister also told Parliament that Ghana’s economy is bouncing back to life. He said the economy is making modest gains in efforts to reverse the severe economic hardship that hit hardest in 2022.

According to him, the government’s policies introduced to bring the economy back to winning ways are yielding positive outcomes.

He mentioned peace, health, security and a continuous supply of power as some of the progress the country has chalked this year.

One of the areas of focus in the budget review also included the prioritization of social protection programmes like Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP), School Feeding, and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Amid global economic uncertainties, hopes are high that the review will provide a positive outlook for Ghana’s economy and set the stage for a promising second half of the year.

Bagbin pushes for conditions of service for the media

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has stirred a debate about the welfare and conditions of service for Ghanaian media personnel.

According to him, if the media were that important, how come the country has failed to clearly spell out the conditions of service for media personnel?

“If the media is that important, how come the country has not spelled out conditions of service, even if they’re minimal for media personnel? If the media is that important, how come the people don’t appreciate the product of the media, whether it is from private or public media?” he stated.

He said this whilst addressing Journalists in Takoradi on Saturday, August 5, 2023 ahead of parliamentary engagement in the region, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Parliamentary democracy in Ghana.

Speaker Bagbin indicated that it was important that: “we look at the welfare and conditions of media personnel so that they do not respond to the pressures of society but stand on their own and hold the government and everybody to account.”

This, he mentioned, was the intent behind the framers of the 1992 constitution, where the media function is clearly outlined.

He continued that whatever the media do is for the public good and its services nourish the country and “as you can see our human rights record is on the decline because of what is happening to the media.”

Speaker Bagbin mentioned specifically that he was unhappy about what he described as intrusion and a lot of intimidation, threats and violence towards media personnel.

“Yes, Parliament is really worried about the state of the media—it is not only the fear and intimidation and attacks against media personnel, but the working environment.”

For this reason, he said parliament has been visiting media houses, such as Graphic, GBC, TV3 and XYZ to hold discussions with them over the attack and intimidation on the media. The rest of the media houses, including the print media, would soon see the team arrive at their media houses.

He said Parliament decided to reach out to the media houses because it was concerned about the attacks.

Nevertheless, Speaker Bagbin, who described himself as a friend of the media, says it was expected of the media to play its role well because it is an arm of government.

The media, he pointed out, is an arm that links the other three arms of government together with the people, so the importance of the media cannot be underestimated.

Unfortunately, this has not been seen because it has not been formalised as the most important arm of government.

Actor Jamie Foxx has apologised for an Instagram post that was accused of being antisemitic.

Foxx, 55, has deleted the post, which read: “They killed this dude name Jesus… what do you think they’ll do to you???! #fakefriends #fakelove”.

Some social media users said Foxx’s post echoed an antisemitic belief that Jewish people were collectively responsible for Jesus Christ’s death.

The Roman Catholic Church officially repudiated the idea in 1965.

On Saturday, Foxx addressed the criticism in a new Instagram post which said: “I want to apologise to the Jewish community and everyone who was offended by my post.

“I now know my choice of words have caused offense and I’m sorry. That was never my intent.

“To clarify, I was betrayed by a fake friend and that’s what I meant with ‘they’ not anything more,” the Ray star said in an Instagram post.

Jennifer Aniston also faced criticism after she appeared to “like” Foxx’s original post before it was deleted. The Friends actor then released a statement on Instagram, saying she did not support any form of antisemitism.

‘We can’t find any medicine that works’ –Celine Dion’s sister says singer is struggling amid health battle

Celine Dion

Celine Dion’s sister Claudette Dion said that the singer has been struggling to find treatment for her stiff person syndrome diagnosis.

During an interview with Le Journal de Montreal, Claudette revealed that despite working with “the top researchers in the field,” the Grammy winner, 55, has seen little improvement in her health.

“We can’t find any medicine that works, but having hope is important,” Claudette said.

According to the National Institutes of Health, stiff person syndrome is a “rare, progressive neurological disorder” that can cause stiff muscles in the torso, arms and legs.

It affects about one in a million people.

Following the diagnosis, Celine was forced to cancel her Courage World Tour, which Claudette said was necessary for her chances of rehabilitation.

“I honestly think that she mostly needs to rest. She always goes above and beyond, she always tries to be the best and top of her game,” she said. “At one point, your heart and your body are trying to tell you something. It’s important to listen to it.”

Their sister Linda has since moved into Celine’s Las Vegas home to act as a caretaker for the hitmaker.

“When I call her and she’s busy, I speak to my sister Linda who lives with her and tells me that she’s working hard,” Claudette explained. “She’s listening to the top researchers in the field of this rare disease as much as possible.”

Despite the lack of improvement in Celine’s condition, the family still has “trust” that things will get better.

Yul Edochie’s first wife, May, officially files for divorce

Yul Edochie and wives

Yul Edochie unveiled Judy Austin as his second wife in April 2022 after they welcomed a son. Since the announcement, they have continuously been on the social media radar for one controversy or the other.

After keeping calm through the controversies and the death of their son, his first wife, May Edochie, has finally taken legal action against the duo.

On Tuesday, a law firm, DPA Family Clinic, disclosed the legal charges Mrs Edochie is filing against Yul and his second wife.

A statement written by one of its Legal practitioners, Emeka Ugwuonye, on their official Facebook page titled “Yul Edochie situation: Understanding the reality of it” revealed more about Yul and Judy’s controversial union.

Mr Ugwuonye wrote, “To avoid doubts, May Yul-Edochie filed a divorce petition against Yul. She also filed against Judy as a party cited, asking for N100 million (equivalent to 130,208.40) in damages against Judy for adultery with her husband.”

“Make no mistake about it: Yul and Judy are NOT husband and wife and can not be so until Yul and May are divorced. It is a combination of delusion and absurdity for the two to call themselves husband and wife yet,” he added.

The legal practitioner further revealed that Mrs Edochie is represented in court by Femi Falana’s Firm and Eculaw Group, while DPA plays the support role.

In the statement, Mr Ugwuonye revealed that Yul and his second wife received copies of the suit papers, which means they are aware of the lawsuit against them.

However, the duo is said to be avoiding the service of the process despite their awareness.

The legal practitioner also disclosed that the court bailiff tried many times to serve them following the court rules, but they evaded the service of the court process.

The movie industry is really dead -Beverly Afaglo

Beverly Afaglo

Actress, TV presenter, and entrepreneur Beverly Afaglo Baah has lamented the ailing state of the movie industry. The Ghanaian movie industry has over the years seen little or no revamp, many actors have lashed out at the collapse of the art industry with lots of the players venturing into other side hustles.

Adding her voice to this matter, she mentioned that hope was the only rope they were clinching onto but the comeback seems far-fetched.

Speaking on UTV Showbiz Night, she explained that the lack of funding and unavailable resources are contributing factors to the slumber of the movie industry, also citing private individuals who invest in producing content but don’t make the returns in the long run which is worrying.

“We were holding onto hope, thinking it will bounce back but it seems far-fetched, truth be told the industry is dead. I was having a conversation with one of my colleagues about the industry but in conclusion, we realized there is absolutely nothing happening towards reviving the industry. it is pretty worrying.

“Only Akwaaba magic on DSTV produces content lately by contracting producers of the likes of Shirley Frimpong Manso, Ivan Quarshigah, and Smartys productions. we are doing the best we can but it is not working, Our very own actors turn producers don’t even get their returns when they invest in production”.

Uganda paternity testing causes huge controversy

0
Uganda paternity testing

With reports of a sharp increase in the number of men in Uganda seeking paternity tests, fears are growing it could break up families and leave children psychologically scarred.

The issue has been a hot topic of debate in the country since a tabloid newspaper published a story claiming that a well-known business tycoon – who had several wives and mistresses – had a row with one of his spouses, prompting him to request paternity tests that reportedly said he was the biological father of only 15 of his 25 children.

The tycoon and his family have never commented publicly, and the report has not been independently verified.

But the story spread like wildfire and has caused huge controversy over the last few months, prompting some lawmakers to make an emotional appeal to men to stop putting their families and children through the trauma of tests.

“Let’s live like our forefathers lived. The child born in the house is your child,” Minister of Mineral Development Sarah Opendi said in parliament. Although she qualified her statement by adding that if a man wanted a paternity test it should be done when a child is born – not when they are grown up.

Most worryingly, the privately owned Monitor newspaper reported that testing has caused domestic violence, with police arresting an Israeli national living in Uganda for allegedly killing his wife after DNA results showed that he was not the father of their six-month-old child. The man has not yet been charged.
