Karela United host King Faisal in GPL Week 7

Karela United

Karela United are buoyed by the draw against Hearts of Oak in midweek and are favourites to slay King Faisal at home in midweek.

The Passioners have a 100% home record at Crosby Awuah Memorial Park this season having beaten Tamale City, Dreams FC and Bechem United.

They are seventh on the Ghana Premier League table with ten points from six matches.

This is a penultimate fixture before the league breaks for the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar.

Faisal might have rediscovered their form after recording their first win of the campaign on Saturday.

They beat newcomers Kotoku Royals 2-1 at Baba Yara Stadium.

Striker Abednego Tetteh, who scored and was named Man of the Match in that match, could hurt Karela.

Jimmy Cobblah’s side remain at the foot of the table with a paltry three points from 18.

No compromise on corruption ! Akufo-Addo Uproots Adu-Boahen Like Cassava; hands him over to Special Prosecutor

0
Charles Adu-Boahen
President Akufo-Addo

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has shown the Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen the exit from his government.

The rather swift dismissal announced Monday, November 14, 2022 in a statement from Jubilee House took immediate effect.

Mr Adu Boahen was sent to the ‘slaughter house’ of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Tiger Eye PI team for their latest exposé, “Galamsey Economy.”

Charles Adu Boahen was fired before the alleged corruption documentary was premiered in Accra yesterday.

The Chronicle understands that those involved in the said exposé were made aware before the spublic premiering and that the President decided to focus on his appointees implicated by the investigative journalists.

A statement from Jubilee House read that: “After being made aware of the allegations levelled against the Minister in the exposé, ‘Galamsey Economy’, the President spoke to Mr. Adu Boahen, after which he took the decision to terminate his appointment and also to refer the matter to the Special Prosecutor for further investigations,” the release continued.

The announcement of the termination of Charles Adu Boahen’s appointment brings the number of ministers under the current Akufo-Addo term who have lost their jobs to two.

The first was the dismissal of the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo, and now Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen.

I won’t allow my name to be used for corrupt deeds –VEEP

0
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has distanced himself from the alleged claims of Mr Adu Boahen, the former Minister for State at the Ministry of Finance, that he (VEEP) needed $200k as ‘appearance fee’ before investors can meet him.

This was when Mr Adu Boahen met Anas Aremeyaw Anas undercover investigators in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In a post on his Twitter handle, the vice president noted that if the claims contained in the Anas’ video that he, the Vice President, needed US$200,000 as an “appearance fee” from potential investors to have a meeting with him, then the minister should be “dismissed summarily and investigated.”

According to the Vice President, he was not aware of such a meeting, cautioning that his most cherished asset in life is his integrity and he will not allow anyone to use his name to engage in corrupt activities.

Meanwhile, the Founding President of Imani Center for Policy and Education, Franklin Cudjoe, has asserted that Vice President Dr.  Mahamudu Bawumia does not need any financial ‘pimping’ (inducement) to carry out his duties as the Second Gentleman of the land, as allegedly suggested by Minister of State in Charge of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen, in the latest exposé by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Mr Cudjoe said Mr Adu-Boahen was too excited when he met with the investigative team of Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who posed as Arab investors with millions of dollars to invest in Ghana. He, therefore, was not measured and engaged in grandstanding about people who were unaware of his dealing with the supposed Arab investors.

“When making business deals, one must always be measured. Grandstanding should be avoided at all cost, especially when it involves others who are unaware of the deals. Not sure Veep Bawumia needs financial ‘pimping’ from anyone. The Minister was too excited at the opportunity. Will wait for the full video though,” he commented yesterday on the exposé.

According to Anas Aremeyaw Anas, Charles Adu Boahen engaged in influence peddling on how he was capable of meeting with President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia to facilitate the work of the supposed investors using monetary inducement.

But for Mr Cudjoe, it is unlikely that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia would need someone to influence them monetarily to facilitate such investments.

 WHY THIS INVESTIGATION?

Tiger Eye said it investigates the high and the mightiest and this time its cameras infiltrated the impermeable underworld of the handlers whose seals make the deals that make Ghana attractive for investors or not.

It said many reports had cited corruption as the number one killer of investor confidence in Ghana, with the banking sector crisis further exacerbating the already fragile situation of investor confidence.

“Who are those making Ghana unattractive for investment? What’s their modus operandi? Where do they operate from? Tiger Eye penetrates and exposes the handlers who cut deals at the expense of the state.”

NDC Chair race: Mosquito in comfortable lead

0
Mr Asiedu Nketiah

A survey conducted by The Chronicle in Kumasi has revealed that Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who is vying for the chairmanship race has an edge over the incumbent National Chairman, Comrade Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

The survey, in which views of delegates were sampled at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi yesterday, indicated that the General Secretary stands tall to win the upcoming elections.

About 70% to 80% of the delegates in the Ashanti region predicted a win for General Mosquito.

According to the interviewees, Mr. Asiedu Nketia is strong in spirit, courageous and fearless when it comes to elections.

The delegates said Mr. Asiedu Nketia is more abreast with the core values of the NDC and knows what it takes to ensure that the NPP does not steal the 2024 elections or attack NDC members before and during the elections.

They further explained their position by saying Mr. Ofosu Ampofo, the incumbent National Chairman is too calm and soft to handle the 2024 elections.

They further claimed that politics is not for the clergy, hence the need to bring Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who is strong and fearless to face the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Meanwhile, those who rooted for Mr. Ofosu Ampofo to be retained said the leadership of the incumbent chairman was fairly successful in 2020. This is because he ensured that the NDC reclaimed most of the seats it lost in the 2016 elections, even as an opposition party.

According to them, Ofosu Ampofo’s calmness and gentle nature of doing politics attracted more floating voters to the party in the 2020 elections, which increased the fortunes of the party, hence the need to retain him and to claw back political power from the governing NPP.

Aisha Huang’s marriage certificate was forged -GIS officer tells court

0
Aisha Huang

The most talked about Chinese national, En Huang alias Aisha Huang’s marriage certificate, which gave her the impetus as indefinite residence permit in Ghana, was allegedly forged.

This was according to the Superintendent of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), David Essien, who testified as the Attorney-General’s (A-G) second prosecution witness (PW2) yesterday.

He told the Accra Criminal High Court, presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, while being cross-examined by Aisha Huang’s defence counsel, Captain Nkrabeah Effah Dartey (rtd), that Aisha’s marriage to one Anthony Fabian who was believed to be a Ghanaian, never existed.

This follows an investigation conducted by the GIS, which established that Aisha Huang, who is currently being tried for facilitating the participation of persons engaged in a mining operation and employment of foreign nationals, used a forged marriage certificate and forged Ghana passport to support her application for the indefinite residence permit.

“My lord, as a result of this, the Comptroller General of Ghana Immigration Service revoked her (Aisha Huang) indefinite residence permit on the grounds of fraudulent misrepresentation, in accordance with section 22(2)(a), Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573), which led to the subsequent repatriation of the accused on 19th December, 2018,” he asserted.

PW2 also told the court that he has had two encounters with the accused before the current trial.

His first encounter with the accused was on August 30, 2016, when the latter was invited to the Kumasi Enforcement Unit of the GIS, following media publications and accusations on August 24, 2016, that Aisha Huang was engaged in galamsey (illegal mining), leading to tension mounting in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.

According to him, in the said publications, the accused allegedly had encroached upon other people’s concessions and her illegal activities had caused destruction of the environment, especially water bodies.

He added that it was also reported that Aisha’s alleged illegal mining activities had also caused the lives of some six individuals or children.
Supt Essien indicated that after Aisha’s statement was taken, she was allowed to go.

The witness added that his second encounter with the accused was on May 5, 2017, when some four Chinese nationals were arrested at Bepopotenten for engaging in illegal mining (galamsey).

PW2 explained that Aisha was invited to their office, because the Chinese nationals who were arrested mentioned Aisha Huang as the one who had employed them, and had in her possession their passports.

He said Aisha arrived earlier than the arresting officers at the unit, but could not wait for them.

The witness, while being led by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, to give his evidence-in-chief, said it took a tug-of-war before Aisha reported back to the GIS Enforcement Unit.

He told the court that when the arresting officers finally arrived with the suspects and Aisha was called on her phone, she refused to answer.
But later when they got in touched with her, she allegedly told the officers that she did not care if her employees were taken to Accra.

“It took a great effort to get her to follow us to our office. The accused eventually came to our office, and she gave us her passport and the passports of Haibin Gao and Zhang Zhupeng,” he added.

The witness further stated that the statement was taken of the accused on May 6, 2017, and on the next day, the accused, together with the other Chinese nationals, were transported to the GIS Headquarters in Accra.
Interpretation challenge

While the witness was giving his evidence-in-chief, the accused informed the court that she did not understand what the Chinese interpreter was speaking.
The court paused proceedings and the interpreter was replaced by another who aided the police to take Aisha Huang’s statement.
Cross-examination

Q. My lord, my first salvo. You told this court that you have met the accused on two separate occasions?
A. Yes.

Q. On the first occasion it was in connection with a publication on myjoyonline?
A. Yes.
Q. In reference to that publication, your boss ordered you to ascertain the immigration status of the accused?

A. Yes.
Q. So your first encounter with the accused was in reference to her immigration status only?

A. No my lord. According to my Witness Statement, it is to ascertain her immigration status and the situation on the ground.

When we examined the accused person’s indefinite residence passport, which was granted to her based on her supposed married to a Ghanaian known as Anthony Fabian.

However, investigations conducted by the Ghana Immigration Service established that the accused person used [a] forged married certificate and forged Ghana passport in support of her application for the indefinite residence permit.

My lord, as a result of this, the Comptroller General of [the] GIS, revoked her indefinite residence permit on ground of fraudulent misrepresentation in accordance with section 22 (2)(a), which led to Immigration Act 200 (Act 573), which led to the subsequent repatriation of the accused on 19 December, 2018.

Background

On May 5, 2017, at about 12:00pm, officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Obuasi Municipal Command, arrested four male Chinese nationals, namely Gao Jin Cheng, Lu Qi Jun, Haibin Gao and Zhang Ziupeng, who were actively engaged on an illegal mining site at Bepotenten in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.

Upon their arrest, the four Chinese nationals told the arresting officers that they were sent to mine at the site by Aisha Huang, and that their passports were with her in Kumasi.

The arresting officers sent the four persons, first to the Obuasi office of the GIS, and subsequently to the Kumasi office.

Aisha Huang, upon receiving the information about the arrest of her alleged Chinese employees, proceeded to the Regional Immigration office in Kumasi, even before the arresting officers reached the Ashanti Regional capital.

After a while, Aisha left, upon realising that the suspects were yet to be brought to the GIS Kumasi office, but was later called back to report with the alleged miners’ passports.

With great difficulty, En Huang eventually produced the passports of only Haibin Gao and Zhang Zhupeng.

The visas of these two arrested persons showed that they came to Ghana on B-1 visas (business visas), which did not qualify them to be engaged in any type of work in the country.

They were, however, engaged by En Huang to undertake mining operations without the requisite licences at Bepotenten.

Investigations disclosed that En Huang took possession of several farmlands for mining, and eventually destroyed crops, sources of drinking water, and access routes to these farms, as well as the livelihoods depending on these for survival.

Aisha was earlier arraigned before the Accra High Court on related charges of illegally undertaking a small-scale mining operation contrary to section 99 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006, Act 703, and illegal employment of foreign nationals contrary to sections 24 and 52 (1) (d) of the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573.

However, on December 19, 2018, the Attorney-General entered nolle prosequi and terminated the trial, and on the same day, the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service revoked her permit to remain in the country indefinitely, ordered her immediate repatriation to China, and directed her to stay out of Ghana until the Comptroller-General approved of her future re-entry into Ghana.

Furthermore, Aisha was put on an Ethiopian Airline flight No Et920, which took off at about 12:50 pm on December 17, 2018, to Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia, en route to Guangzhou, China.

The court was told that her flight seat No 32 F (Economy Class) and her travel documents were handed over to the Captain of the flight to be handed over to her upon arrival at her final destination, Guangzhou, China.

But contrary to the directive issued by the Comptroller-General under section 20 (2) in the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573, State Security agents received the information that she had re-entered Ghana and was subsequently arrested on September 2, 2022 in Kumasi.

The court was further informed that this re-entry was in total defiance of the clear order of the Comptroller-General of 19 December, 2018.

Upon her arrest, En Huang had in her possession two Chinese passports, one in the name of En Huang and the other in the name of Huan Ruixia, both of which had her photographs.

Editorial: Let’s unite behind the Stars

The Coach of the Senior National Team, the Black Stars, Otto Addo, has officially announced his final 26 man squad for the Mundial in Qatar later this month. As usual, yesterday’s announcement of the final squad, which would represent Ghana as one of the participating African countries, has been met with mix reactions from the public.

While some supporters and soccer loving fans have welcomed the announcement with rapturous applause to show their satisfaction, others have greeted the news with massive disappointment.

The mix reactions have come about as a result of the calibre of players the technical team, led by the Coach, has put forward as those who merit the call-up into the national team presently.

The levels of satisfaction expressed by some Ghanaians, as well as the seething of anger by others, which have characterised the Coach’s choice of players, are normal and very familiar. This is because the game of football has become the opium of the over thirty million population, to the extent that almost everybody claims to have an appreciable level of understanding of the game.

This beautiful scenario feeds into the more reason football has arguably become the only game which binds us together, looking at the highly polarised political atmosphere.

Following the fact that there are more coaches in Ghana than the country could possibly employ, some of these sharply divided opinions were envisaged. However, there is very little that opinions, sentiments, views, accusations and counter-accusations could do at this point, especially when the Coach has already finalised his squad.

The clarion call by The Chronicle at this crucial time is that Ghanaians must, as a matter of necessity, commit themselves to rallying behind the Stars as a team.

In our view, though our individual expectations about which players should have made the cut might not have been met, it is important to underscore that every single player, given the opportunity, is also a Ghanaian.

It is a fact that we might not have a compact team,as witnessed in both 2006 and 2010, but it is our belief that if we should throw our total support behind the current squad, they would not disappoint us.

In the game of football, unity is very key, therefore, as a nation going to the Mundial with a common purpose, we must not have our front divided.

Any further division, following the named squad, could easily have emotional, psychological, physical or mental effects on the players, and in the unfortunate event that the aforesaid should happen, the consequences would be dire.

Participating in the Mundial for the first time in 2006, the Black Stars qualified from their Group at the expense of the USA and Czech Republic, after defeating both countries.

The second consecutive appearance in 2010 was even better when the Stars carried the flag of Africa on their shoulders in South Africa, and nearly reached the semi-finals. The Black Stars of Ghana have carved a niche for themselves as far as their participation in the World Cup is concerned, following their impressive records in 2006 and 2010.

Fortunately for the current Stars, their Coach, Otto Addo, was a member of the maiden squad in 2006 in Germany, and therefore, cannot let us down.

As a young coach, Otto Addo must be reminded that he is solely responsible for his own actions and inactions, as far as the performance of the squad he has assembled is concerned.

Just as he would be hailed for his tactics and instructions on the field of play when the players deliver, he would equally have his head on the chopping board for any other outcome.

Therefore,  it is our belief  that Otto Addo picked and chose players who could best play to his instructions, so that could make all of us proud. We, on this note, call for absolute unity and maximum support from Ghanaians so that the Stars could make us proud once again.

Mr Patrick Yaw Boakye ,Presiding Member for Pru East District Assembly

Mr. Patrick Yaw Boakye has been elected Presiding Member (PM) for the Pru East District Assembly in the Bono East Region.

The other contestant, Mr. Yussif Sulemana, pulled out in support, and gave approval for Mr. Yaw Boakye to contest unopposed.

Surprisingly, Mr. Sulemana also called on his fellow members to vote massively for Mr. Yaw Boakye to become the next PM for the Assembly.

Seventeen out of the 24 members constituting the Assembly voted for Mr. Yaw Boakye.

Mr. Yaw Boakye, in his acceptance speech, thanked the members for the opportunity given him to serve as a Presiding Member.

He appreciated the members for the confidence reposed in him, and assured them of bringing on board innovative policies to improve their welfare, regardless of one’s political affiliation or tribe.

He entreated the members to work in unity devoid of partisan politics for the progress of the District.

The Pru East District Chief Executive, Alhaji Abdulai Adams, charged the Assembly to exist as a strong team with the interest of the district at heart.

He reminded them that their call to duty was a call to serve with all humility and must not fail the electorate.

Nkoranza Community Care Home gets assistance

The items donated

ASA Savings and Loans Limited has made a donation to the PCC Hand in Hand Community Care home for intellectually disabled children at Nkoranza in the Bono East Region.

The items, which included wheelchairs, crotches, diapers, toiletries, mattresses and zeema flame, were worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

The presentation formed part of the corporate social responsibility of ASA Savings and Loans towards the inmate at the care centre.

The Divisional Manager in charge of the Northern Division of ASA Savings and Loans Limited, Haiul Hasan, who presented the items, indicated that he was touched by the plight of the inmates at the centre, and expressed the hope that the donation would go a long way to alleviate their plight.

He said physically challenged children deserved special attention and care from everyone, because they were also members of the society, and called on the public to help make life comfortable for such unfortunate children.

Aside from the donation, Mr. Hasan promised to organise free health screening and scholarship packages for the needy students to give back to the community in their operational area.

The Manager of PCC Hand in Hand Community Care, Mr. Samuel Baffo, who received the items, expressed gratitude to the financial institution for the gesture, saying the items would help in the upkeep of the inmates.

According to him, the negative perception by a section of the public towards the physically challenged had denied the centre the needed support from people who might be willing to come to their aid.

The centre, which was established in 1990 with 87 inmates and 54 workers, Mr. Baffo said, was yet to receive any support from the state.
