Ahead of Ghana, CAR AFCON qualifiers; Stars face setback as Ashimeru and Salis sustain injuries

0
Majeed Ashimeru

Ghana coach Chris Hughton faces a setback as midfielder Majeed Ashimeru is expected to miss the crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Central African Republic (CAR) next month.

Ghana’s final qualifying match is scheduled to take place at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 7, with the home team needing only a draw to secure their spot in the tournament.

Unfortunately for Hughton, Ashimeru’s availability for the game is in doubt due to an ankle injury sustained during Anderlecht’s 0-2 defeat against Royal Union Saint-Gilloise in the opening weekend of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.

The central midfielder has been sidelined for the past four league matches, and it is unlikely that he will recover in time for the international fixture.

In addition to Ashimeru’s absence, Hughton may also have to contend with the unavailability of Abdul Samed Salis, who sustained an injury during Lens’ Ligue 1 game over the weekend. This adds to the injury concerns for the Black Stars as they approach the crucial qualifier against CAR.

Despite these challenges, the Black Stars remain determined to secure their place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The Black Stars will need to navigate these injury setbacks and put forward a strong performance to achieve their goal in the upcoming match.

European leagues transfer window shuts on Friday; as clubs work on last-gasp deals

0
Mohamed Salah

Premier League clubs have just three days left to push through any last-gasp deals in the transfer window, with managers still keen to bolster their squads ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool remains a major talking point ahead of deadline day, with the Egyptian reportedly eager to leave Anfield in a bid to join Saudi Pro League giants Al-Ittihad.

Although the Saudi Arabia deadline is not until September 20, Liverpool have less than a week to find a replacement should they plan to sanction Salah’s lucrative move to the Middle East.

Joao Felix

Liverpool are targeting former Chelsea forward Joao Felix as a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah should he leave for Al-Ittihad, according to reports in Portugal.

Joao Felix

The Atletico Madrid star carried out a six-month loan at Stamford Bridge last season, netting four times in 20 appearances.

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku

Meanwhile, Matheus Nunes has gone on strike at Wolves in an effort to force through a move to champions Manchester City, and Chelsea have finally organised an exit for ostracised Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku, who is set to join Roma on loan for a £5million fee.

Alex Iwobi

Fulham are showing an interest in Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi. The Cottagers are keen to bolster their attack after losing star forward Aleksandar Mitrovic to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal earlier this summer.

Kelechi Iheanacho

Wolves are considering a £20m swoop for Leicester forward Kelechi Iheanacho. The Foxes star would be viewed as a replacement for Matheus Nunes should the want-away complete his move to Treble-winners Manchester City.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Manchester United are weighing up a surprise move for Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Ange Postecoglou is willing to let Hojbjerg depart along with several other first-team stars including England international Eric Dier.

Scott McTominay

Bayern Munich have identified Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay as their No 1 transfer target ahead of Friday. The Scotland international has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.

 Trevoh Chalobah

Bayern Munich have opened talks with Chelsea over Trevoh Chalobah’s availability. Thomas Tuchel is believed to be a fan of the centre-half having worked with him previously at Stamford Bridge.

Joe Gomez

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is attracting interest from Saudi giants Al-Ittihad. The Reds vow they have no plans to sell important players ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Portuguese striker Beto

Everton have signed Portuguese striker Beto from Italian side Udinese for a fee reportedly worth up to £30m.

The 25-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Goodison Park and becomes their fifth signing of the summer.

The 6ft 4in striker scored 10 goals for Udinese last season and bolsters a Toffees team that has yet to find the back of the net this campaign.

“It feels good to join Everton,” said Beto, who was linked with the club during the January transfer window.

“Everton is a big, big club in the Premier League, well respected and has big history. It was easy to make this move.

“When a club like Everton tries to buy you in January and then comes again in the summer, you feel like, ‘OK, they want me for real’, so that made the decision easy for me as well.

“My idol, Samuel Eto’o, played here, too, which makes it even more special.”

Lewandowski hits out at Xavi’s tactics, declaring ‘we don’t play with enough attacking players’

Robert Lewandowski

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has criticised manager Xavi for not starting enough attacking players.

Lewandowski has scored one goal in three appearances so far this campaign and feels that at times he hasn’t received the service that he is used to getting.

The 35-year-old stated that the situation often significantly improves when the likes of Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati are introduced from the bench.

Barcelona manager Xavi

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Lewandowski said: ‘We are Barça and we are expected not only to win, but also to play good attacking football.

‘Lately that has not been as it should be, so we have been fighting to create more chances in matches… When we see Ferran or Ansu come on, two players who go forward, we create more chances. Sometimes we don’t play with enough attacking players, I don’t have support… so I look for the best solution to the team’.

Lewandowski added that at times he has had to create chances for himself due to the lack of support.

He said: ‘I think that with my experience, when I know my body, I look for the best solution not only for me, but also for the team.

‘I realize that sometimes, if I’m between two central defenders, it’s easier for the defenders. In many In games I don’t have many chances to score. In the last two games I didn’t have many chances, I didn’t receive many balls, so sometimes I had to create my chances’.

Having scored his first goal of the season in the 4-3 win over Villarreal last weekend, Lewandowski will be hoping that his situation will now markedly improve.

Barcelona face Osasuna away on Sunday in their next game and it will be intriguing to see whether Xavi elect to bring Torres and Fati into the starting lineup.

Adutwum Engages Teachers …on Educational Reforms

0
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister for Education addressing the teachers

Teachers in the Ashanti Region have hailed the Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum for what they described as a historic direct engagement with teachers to learn at first hand their concerns as major stakeholders in the education system.

They believe the initiative by the Minister is the way to go in tackling the core challenges facing the teaching fraternity whose role is critical to achieving the desired learning outcomes as a country.

A cross-section of teachers in the Region expressed their excitement about their maiden encounter with the Minister at a meeting in Kumasi which is the first of series of meetings scheduled to be held across the Regions.

About 1,500 teachers drawn from all 43 districts across the Region attended the meeting, which was put together by the Regional Education Directorate, under the leadership of Dr. Kwame Amankra Appiah, the Regional Director of Education.

Also in attendance were officials of the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.

According to them, the Minister’s decision to meet teachers is a demonstration of his determination to transform education in Ghana through stakeholder engagement and participation.

They made the most out of the opportunity as they fraternised with the Minister after the meeting, drawing his attention to real problems confronting them in the performance of their duties.

The meeting sought to bridge the gap between teachers and the Minister as part of strategies towards the implementation 21st century educational policies to achieve optimum results.

Dr. Adutwum acknowledged the important role teachers play in the education sector and also underscored the need to resource them to deliver quality tuition in order to produce the right human resource for accelerated national development.

“The future of Ghana is in your hands and we are determined to change the history of this country with your support,” the Minister reminded the teachers.

The Ministry, he said, is pursuing policies geared towards accelerating socio-economic transformation of Ghana, adding that the teacher is at the center of that agenda.
He said education is not an end in itself, but a means to an end where an equitable society is created for the general good of the masses.

“When I talk about transforming basic education, I am talking about getting opportunity for those who may be less privileged to prepare themselves for schools that are perceived to be the reserve of the affluent in society,” he stated.

He expressed his appreciation for the determination and commitment of teachers in Ghana and implored them to work harder to improve learning outcomes as the Ministry take steps to reward their sacrifices.

The Minister said the target at the basic school level is to prepare pupils to be able to handle courses at the second cycle level by providing them with well-equipped laboratories and other facilities required to achieve the goal.

He said government is building smart classrooms in Junior High Schools across the country to create conducive environment for academic work.

Dr. Adutwum, who has been championing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education entreated the teachers to embrace the new direction of education in Ghana to train students who can compete in the fourth industrial revolution.

Phase II Of Planting For Food & Jobs Takes Off

0

President Akufo-Addo on Monday, August 28, 2023 launched Phase Two of Government’s flagship programme on agriculture, “Planting for Food and Jobs”, at the University for Development Studies, Tamale.

Targeted at building on the successes of the initial programme, the second phase of the programme is a five-year master plan for the transformation of agriculture in Ghana with focus on modernisation through the development of a selected commodity value chain and active private sector participation.

Speaking at the launch, President Akufo-Addo stated that the second phase, by design, “takes a holistic view and places greater emphasis on value chain approaches by focusing on strengthening linkages between actors along eleven selected agricultural commodity value chains broadly categorised into grains, roots and tuber, vegetables and poultry.”

He added that Phase Two of the Programme also seeks to improve service delivery to maximise impact, and substitutes direct input subsidy with smart agricultural financial support in the form of comprehensive input credit, with provision for in-kind payment.

The President disclosed further that key elements of the new phase also include an input credit system that provides farmers with access to inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and pesticides and other support services for improving productivity and yield as well as storage infrastructure and logistic hub to improve storage and distribution of produce to reduce post-harvest losses.

Additionally, it also includes off-taker arrangements/commodity trading to improve farmer access to markets which guarantees fair prices for crops; and a digitised platform for management, monitoring and coordination to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the programme.

“The impact of the Programme is expected to be in the area of job creation, with some one-point-two million (1.2 million) farmers to be enrolled in the first year. In the next four (4) years, the Programme is destined to record an annual average of two hundred and ten thousand (210,000) new farm-related jobs.

This will exclude other jobs along the agricultural value chains estimated at an annual average of four hundred and twenty thousand over the same period,” President Akufo-Addo said.

It will be recalled that, On Wednesday, 19th April, 2017, President Akufo-Addo launched the maiden “Planting for Food and Jobs” programme at Goaso in the Ahafo region to represent government’s key initiative to modernise agriculture, improve production efficiency, achieve food security, and profitability for our farmers.

It summarily targeted a significant increase in agricultural productivity and pursued a value-addition strategy, aimed at rapidly ramping up agro-processing and developing new and stable markets.

The President noted that, the successful implementation of the first phase has resulted in reaching over 2.7 million farmers and other value chain actors under the five modules, a relatively stable food security environment with food self-sufficiency in major food staples such as maize, cassava and yam and an increased agricultural sector growth rate from 2.7% in 2016 to an average of 6.3% from 2017 to 2021.

He continued that, as a result of this, “Government has, thus, been able to achieve the annual target of six percent (6%) of sector growth, set under the Malabo Declaration to which Ghana is a signatory, increased fertilizer application rate from eight kilogrammes per hectare (8 kg/ha) in 2016 to twenty-five kilogrammes per hectare (25 kg/ha) in 2022, an increased distribution of certified seeds from two thousand metric tons (2,000 MT) in 2016 to thirty-six thousand metric tons (36,000 MT) in 2022 and an increased private sector investment in the seed industry.”

The President was happy to disclose that, “a recent Summit, organised by the United Nations on the need to build country food systems in September 2021 in New York and at the AU Dakar II Summit in January 2022, underscored the need for the review of strategies for delivering solutions to challenges in the agricultural sector” as such “it is praise-worthy that Ghana has responded to the call to action at both Summits by rolling out the Second Phase of the PFJ Programme.”

“I continue to give you my pledge that farmers, food crop farmers, fish farmers and livestock farmers will all have the support and respect they deserve from my government. We need to raise agriculture to a higher plane to be able to improve on the quality of life for our people,” he said.

Bugri Naabu blows cover of COPs Asare, Mensah

Bugri Naabu

The former Northern Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, has confirmed that he recorded the leaked audio revealing a clandestine plot to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from office.

Bugri Naabu, while defending his recording of the conversation, mentioned that Commander Asare was the person who had the discussion with him about IGP Dampare.

Naabu also mentioned COP Mensah and Superintendent Gyebi.

According to him, for the purposes of evidence and to capture every detail of the sensitive discussion and present it to the attention of the President, the best option was to record it.

“The reason for recording this tape is that they are coming to tell me to go and tell the President something that they know they are saying, and it is either I don’t go to tell the President and then I and my party suffer for it, or if I also go to talk to the President, it is good to tell him the right thing, and since I cannot keep everything they were telling me at that point, it was very good to record and I know the President, that if I go and tell him something and it turns out not to be true, next time he won’t give me respect,” he said.

Bugri Naa,who appeared before the Committee on Monday, August 28, 2023 confirmed the veracity of the audio and named one Commander Asare as the person who visited him at his office to have the discussion about the IGP.

IGP PLOT

A member of the Council of Elders of the NPP, Bugri Naabu, informed the Committee that the senior officers were agitating about Dampare’s continuous stay as IGP.

He understood from the conversation that COP Mensah was a preferred candidate for the IGP slot and thus, they wanted Bugri Naabu to use his influence to persuade the President to appoint him.

Superintendent Gyebi was to follow Naabu to meet President Akufo-Addo to present their case, as Commander Asare, who assigned Gyebi, said he was out of town.

Bugri Naabu said he was alarmed to hear that the IGP constantly speaks with President Mahama, who had even promised to maintain him if he wins.

CHILLS

He revealed he had chills all over his body over information that threatened the agenda of the NPP to break the eight.

According to him, his anus shook, when he heard that the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, could orchestrate the electoral defeat of the party.

“He even told me that in this Assin North election, if we allow IGP to go there, we will lose the election and I became scared. The IGP doesn’t go there to vote, but if he can go there and we will lose the election, then my anus was shaking,” he told the Parliamentary Committee probing the leaked audio.

He said the senior police officer claimed that the current IGP was in bed with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, he did his checks in the police hierarchy to corroborate the information he had about the IGP, but a member of the Police Council and other key officers debunked the accusations.

WHO LEAKED IT?

Meanwhile, Bugri Naabu, who admitted to hiring people to record, is looking for the person who leaked the audio. He claims that he presented the audio to the president after it had been played in the media and wondered how it got out.

He further told the committee that he called Commander Asare and asked about the leakage, but the latter banged the phone on him and sent “me a text that he will deal with me. He threatened me!”

The seven-member parliamentary committee, chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea, is probing the leaked audio that discussed IGP Dampare and the chances of the NPP maintaining or losing power.

Police quell attack on Tamale court

The injured policeman

Police, on Monday, managed to contain a riotous mob which attacked the Tamale District Court, and in the process snatched away a sidearm of a policeman.

At least four policemen and three civilians, including a female, sustained various degrees of injuries.

Information obtained from the Northern Regional capital by The Chronicle revealed that the incident occurred when a suspected drug peddler, whose arrest was by a watch dog group in collaboration with police, was arraigned before the court.

He was alleged to have pleaded not guilty when he appeared earlier in court.

When he reappeared on Monday, it was reported that some people, allegedly went on air on two televisions and a radio station to incite the public to attack the court, because the judge was going to set the suspect free.

Immediately, a large crowd blocked the street in front of the court, burning lorry tyres to impede police movement to secure the place.

Some members of the group, wielding offensive weapons, advanced into the court compelling the judge, Mr. Amadu Issifu, and also the lawyers present, to flee.

In the melee, a policeman’s pistol was snatched and taken to an unknown destination.

The hooligans resorted to destroying the roofing and louvre blades of the court.

Police reinforcements, backed by water canons of the Formed Police Unit, managed to rescue the judge and staff of the Judicial Service.

So far, eighteen suspects have been picked up.

Court orders arrest of Financial Analyst for duping nurse off GH¢444K in fertiliser deal

0
Gavel (Court Hammer)

Kenneth Barnes, a Financial Analyst and the Chief Executive Officer of Mybarnes Limited, has been accused of duping a Bawku based nurse off GH¢444,400.00 in a fertiliser deal.

The amount was allegedly collected by Barnes to supply Frinjuah Obed Peter 7,000 bags of fertiliser.

Kenneth Barnes has been slapped with one count of defrauding by false pretences, but when the case presented before the Accra Circuit Court yesterday, he failed to show up.

The court, presided over by His Honour Isaac Oheneba Kuffour, has issued a bench warrant for Kenneth Barnes to be arrested.

Mr. Kuffour has adjourned the case to September 5, 2023.

DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye is the prosecuting officer of the case.

The facts of the case are that the complainant is a nurse and lives at Bawku, while the accused is a 36-year-old Financial Analyst and the Chief Executive Officer of Mybarnes Limited and lives at Amasaman.

Thus, in June 2021, the complainant was introduced to the accused as a dealer in fertiliser.

Based on this, the accused assured the complainant that he could supply him with any quantity of fertiliser he needed.

The complainant informed his relatives and friends who were farmers and they gave the complainant various sums of monies for the fertiliser requisition.

The complainant requested for 7,000 bags of the fertiliser from the accused, which amounted to GH¢444,400.00.

The accused gave the complainant his bank account, as well as mobile wallet numbers, for payment to be made in.

The complainant deposited an amount of GH¢434,400.00 into the bank account, and GH¢10,000.00 into the Mobil wallet, all bearing the name Mybarnes Limited.

The accused acknowledged receipt of payments and promised to deliver the supply within a month, but failed.

The complainant, thereafter, demanded a refund of the money, and the accused promised to pay within 21 days but failed.

Upon these failed promised, the matter was reported to the police and the accused was subsequently arrested.

The accused admitted having received the amount from the complainant, and promised to supply the goods or refund the money before December 20, 2022, and again failed.

The accused was, therefore, charged with the offence before court.

Painter defrauds trader off US$40,500

Court

A Kwabenya based trader, Quacy Freeman, is alleged to have been defrauded by a 32-year-old painter, Michael Ansah, alias Paa, off US$40,500.00 in the cedi equivalent of GH¢415,000.00.

The painter allegedly defrauded Mr. Freeman under the pretence of selling him a Mercedes Benz GLE at a cost of US$40,500.00, but after receiving the said money, failed to deliver the vehicle.

Michael was dragged before an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Isaac Oheneba Kuffour, yesterday, for the offences defrauding by false pretences and resisting arrest.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢500,000.00, with three sureties, two to be justified with movable and immovable properties, together with title deeds.

Brief Facts

The brief facts, as presented by Chief Inspector John Gohoho, was that while the complaint,  Quacy Freeman, lives at Kwabenya, Michael Ansah resides at Ogbojo, all suburb of Accra.

C/Insp. Gohoho told the court that within the month of November 2022, Michael Ansah went to the shop of the complainant with pictures of a Mercedes Benz GLE that he was offering for sale.

The accused allegedly deceived the complainant to believe that the said vehicle being offered for sale belonged to him, and he had used it in the United States of America for some time.

Michael gave his story some credibility by further producing a document to support his entitlement to the vehicle.

Based on this, the accused told the complainant to pay a total sum of US$40,500.00 for him to ship the said vehicle to him.

The accused, thereafter, introduced one Fred to the complainant as the one who was keeping the vehicle in safe custody for him, and the very person who was responsible for shipping the said vehicle.

The accused, after demanding and collecting a total sum of US$40,500.00 (GH¢415,000.00) from the complainant, promised to deliver the vehicle within a month, but failed and started giving flimsy excuses.

On June 5, 2022, the complainant reported the case to police, and the next day, the accused was arrested at Kwabenya.

In the course of his arrest, the accused entered into a fierce struggle with the police after he was told of his offense, and he managed to escape.

After running away, the accused person went to hide in a boutique at Abom, a suburb of Kwabenya, but was traced and arrested.

In the boutique, the accused entered another struggle with the police, which lasted for about one hour, before he was eventually overpowered and arrested with the help of a reinforcement team.

During investigations, the accused person admitted the offences in his caution statement, and stated that, he was unable to ship the said vehicle because they stole it from a White person in the USA.

The accused person pleaded to be given up to two weeks to refund the money, but failed.

He was charged with the offence and was directed by the police to appear before court on July 7, but he refused and changed his place of abode.

The prosecution told the court that it took the police an uphill struggle to re-arrest the accused.

The court, after granting Michael bail, adjourned the case to September 25, 2023.
