Blue economy holds prospects of over $2trillion –Naval chief

Rear Admiral Adam Issah Yakubu

Chief of Navy Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Adam Issah Yakubu says the blue economy holds prospects of over US$2 trillion. However, these prospects cannot be harnessed if importance was not placed on networking and collaboration with member states and other international bodies.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 3rd International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (IMDEC), hosted by Ghana Navy and Great Minds Events in Accra, on Wednesday,

he was happy that this had been attained at the conference.

“From today, I can pick my phone and call any of my neighbours or other countries if we have a challenge and to resolve it amicably, because of the interactions that we had.

“We have also agreed, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea (area), to do a combined maritime taskforce and information sharing where we can do coordinated patrols to ensure that our waters are safe to protect the huge investment that we have in the ocean,” he said.

According to him, the navy had some take-away from the exhibition, which included the advantages of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for surveillance and diving machines for inspecting cables wired under the seabed.

Previously, he said, “we use to send physical divers (humans) to inspect these cables, but now we have the remote operating vehicles that can send images we can watch on the laptops, phones and tablets.

“We’ve seen cutting edge technologies during this conference that would help us solve our problems.” He added that the spontaneous eruption of coup d’etats on the African soil have not so far had any effects on maritime security.

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Kofi Amankwa-Manu, on his part called for a continued collaboration between regional and international agencies, as well as new technologies to combat crime at sea.

According to him, this effort would inure to the benefit of the Gulf of Guinea states in mitigating   challenges that hinder their collective aspirations.

He said previous conferences and exhibitions had presented great solutions to the country’s maritime security challenges and hoped this was no different.

Mr Kofi Amankwa-Manu stated that piracy and terrorism remain the major security concerns of the West African region and was confident that the conference has fashioned out solutions to meet these problems.

He noted that the ideas espoused by the experts at the conference would promote safe and secured maritime domain for the blue economy of Ghana and the entire Gulf of Guinea region to thrive.

The deputy minister was particularly happy with the outcome of the conference that is in tandem with the Yaoundé Architecture.

The Yaoundé Architecture was signed in June 2013, by the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) in Cameroon, to establish a common regional strategy to prevent and prosecute illicit activities in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea.

Mr Kofi Amankwa-Manu was glad that “this conference comes at an opportune time when we take stock of the Yaounde Architecture for Maritime Security (YAMS). Discussion held shows how integral the YAMS is rallying member states in tackling the litany of issues that had troubled our waters in the past. Critical concern to me is the need for us to prevent the excess between piracy and terrorism.”

Ghanaian artiste Kelvynboy has broken his silence on the allegations that he beat his baby mama. The singer described it as the craziest rumour he has heard in his career.

In a recent interview on Hitz FM, he addressed the issue and the disturbing image that circulated online concerning the purported assault.

The image in question depicted Kelvynboy and an unknown woman with blood on her face, leading to speculations that he had physically assaulted his baby mama.

However, Kelvynboy revealed that the image was taken out of context, adding that he has no connection whatsoever with the woman in the image.

He confirmed that indeed he had an argument with his baby mama, which led her to file an official complaint at the police station. But neither of them was physically assaulted during the explosive argument.

It is for this reason Kelvynboy said his team and baby mama were all shocked at the exaggerated report, and they believed the rumour was coined just for attention and content purposes.

The ‘Down Flat’ composer expressed frustration at how such rumours can impact his reputation and career.

He also mentioned that he considered staying silent on the issue, but realized that addressing it was necessary to set the records straight.

Black Sherif

VGMA Artiste of the Year, Black Sherif has revealed that, his decision to feature only Burna Boy on his debut album ‘The Villain I Never Was,’ was because he had a lot to talk about.

“I think that came during the process of making the album. It was very intense for me at that time where I was in my head. I had the studio right in front of my bed. So, when I wake up that’s my studio,” Black Sherif further revealed during the interview “I made so many songs at that time and I felt like, the story I was going to tell I could tell it alone, I had plans of getting features in the album, but making the album and getting to like 70% of the album, I felt I could do it solo, because I had a lot to talk about” he mentioned.

In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo, the ‘Kweku Frimpong’ singer who is known for his emotive storytelling and introspective lyricism says he initially had plans to collaborate with multiple artists on his debut album.

According to Blacko as he is nicknamed, he ultimately decided against it in order to fully express his individual perspective.

One notable collaboration on the album is with Nigerian Afrofusion sensation Burna Boy.

Black Sherif explained that, his connection with Burna Boy extended beyond the music; it was about mutual appreciation and shared creativity.

“It doesn’t even feel real. he first interaction with him it wasn’t about the music. It was the appreciation he made about my sound and it was the thing I do with no filter. It made me feel different about what I do,” he added.

“It’s shocking because even in my neighbourhood in Konongo Zongo, it was only people in my home that knew I could sing and make music,” he noted.

The album, which made an impressive debut at number 12 on the Billboard World Albums Chart, has been making waves not only for its chart success but also for the unique creative choices made by the 21-year-old.

Kuami Eugene inspired me to go into music production –KiDi

KiDi

‘Touch it’ crooner, Dennis Nana Dwamena, alias KiDi, has revealed what led him to learning how to create music.

“One of the reasons why I actually learnt how to produce [music] was the fact that Lynx at that time had signed Kuami Eugene and Kuami Eugene came fully prepared – he was a producer, he was a writer, so he could work quickly,” he explained.

Due to this advantage, KiDi said, “every time Kuami Eugene [had] a new song he [had] made,” meanwhile, he, on the other hand, had “to wait for Richie”.

“If Richie was not free, I could not make music,” he bemoaned, adding that he, thus, told himself “that needs to change.”

He wanted the artistic freedom to “bring to life the ideas in my head”.

He promptly told Richie Mensah, Founder and CEO of Lynx Entertainment, “you need to teach me how to produce”.

According to KiDi, once “Richie started teaching me, I’d practice, practice, practice,” regardless of his primary job.

“I used to have a job – 9 to 5 at the National Service Secretariat so after work, I would just loosen my tie like Clark Kent, go into the studio, fold my sleeves and then be playing things, you know, experimenting, doing all kinds of things,” the 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) Aritiste of the Year narrated.

He revealed that it was during this period in his life that he “birthed” his 2017 hit Say You Love Me.

Seeing how the public received the song, KiDi said, “it gingered me more,” leading to his follow-up song Odo which established him as a widely known music star. It also received a remix from Davido and Mayorkun.

2018’s Adiepena, released after Odo, was also self-produced under the influence of his new found skill and confidence – all these songs appeared on his award winning 2019 debut album, Sugar.

“I started building my confidence in production because I released that as an artiste – it’s not by force but – if you can produce, it kind of influences your music and directs your sound because you know the ideas in your head, you get me?”

The hit record producer and singer-songwriter spoke to Joseph Amo Nti on the Sincerely Accra podcast, stressing this was the first time he was publicly speaking about these events.

Mzbel and Castro

Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, famed Mzbel has compared Ghanaian Hiplife artiste Castro to Nigerian musician Burna Boy, adding they would have been at par if the former was still alive.

According to Mzbel, Castro would have been receiving awards and performing on international stages by now because he was good at his craft.

Speaking in an interview on Kingdom FM, Mzbel asserted “he would have been just like Burna Boy.”

According to Mzbel, Castro was so unique and a hardworking singer.“Because he is always working. He would try many times on whatever he wanted to do, his energy on stage, his voice and he is unique in his own way. So if he was still alive, Ghanaians would have had our own Burna Boy,” she added.

She also described Castro as the best musician she has ever worked with.

Ghanaian musician Castro born Theophilus Tagoe and Miss Janet Bandu on 6 July 2014, were reported to have drowned following a Jet Ski accident in Ada Estuary while on holiday.

An Iranian professional weightlifter received a lifetime ban from competing after shaking the hand of an Israeli athlete during an international competition, according to an Iranian state news agency.

Weightlifting champion Mostafa Rajaee, 36, was filmed shaking hands and posing for a picture with Israel’s Maksim Svirsky at the World Master Weightlifting Championships in Poland this week, according to a video published by Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA Wednesday.

Rajaee, who won the silver medal at the competition, was banned for life from all sports for actions described by the head of Iran’s weightlifting federation as “unacceptable and unforgivable.”

Ecuadorian police arrest six after car bombs explode in Quito

Police officers check the remains of a car that exploded

Police in Ecuador have arrested six suspects after a car bombing in a commercial area of the capital, Quito, as the South American nation grapples with a surge in violence that authorities say is linked to drug trafficking.

The explosion late on Wednesday did not cause any casualties, police said. The vehicle exploded due to the ignition of “two gas cylinders with fuel, a slow fuse and apparently dynamite sticks”, police investigations director Pablo Ramirez told reporters.

Ramirez said agents arrested six people, among them a Colombian national, several kilometres from the site of the explosion hours after the incident. The suspects have a record of extortion, robbery and murder, he said.

A second vehicle that contained two cylinders of petrol and a slow fuse also exploded nearby at an office of Ecuador’s prisons agency, police said on Thursday morning.

It caused “destruction of the vehicle and damage to the exterior” of the building, but no injuries were reported.

Ecuador has faced months of rising violence, particularly in its prisons, where a series of deadly riots have broken out over what officials say is an escalating battle over lucrative drug trafficking routes.

Ex-UK MP asks to be removed from slavery research

Antoinette Sandbach speaks during an anti-Brexit rally in Parliament Square

A former Conservative MP has asked to be removed from an award-winning academic’s research presented in a TEDx Talk that connects her to a slave-owning ancestor, the BBC can reveal.

Malik Al Nasir named Antoinette Sandbach as a descendant of Samuel Sandbach in a video published in 2021.

The Liverpool merchant had a stake in plantations in the West Indies.

Ms Sandbach argues there is no public interest in identifying her as his descendant.

She says she supports Mr Al Nasir’s research but accuses him of singling her out, when there are many other living relatives.

Mr Al Nasir, a poet and an author, has been researching his family’s link to the transatlantic slave trade for decades.

The BBC first documented his roots quest in 2020, when he discovered his links not only to Sandbach Tinne’s enslaved Africans but also the slave owners.

In 2021, Mr Al Nasir presented a TEDx Talk in which he explained how he discovered his family tree, which can be traced back to the sugar plantations in Demerara, in what was then British Guiana and is now Guyana.

People celebrate in support of the putschists in a streets of Gabon

The African Union’s Peace and Security Council said it was holding a meeting on yesterday on the situation in Gabon following the military coup there this week.

The leaders are looking at how to respond to officers who removed President Ali Bongo and installed their own head of state in the latest of a wave of coups in West and Central Africa that regional powers have failed to reverse.

“Now – AU Peace & Security Council meets to consider the situation in Gabon,” the AU body said in a statement on Twitter.

It said the meeting was being chaired by the AU commissioner for political affairs, Bankole Adeoye of Nigeria, and the current holder of the council’s rotating chair, Burundi’s Willy Nyamitwe.

The takeover ended the Bongo family’s almost six decades in power and created a new conundrum for a region that has struggled to deal with eight coups since 2020.

China tells India to ‘stay calm’ in border map row

Indian soldiers come face to face with Chinese troops

China has told India to “stay calm” over a new Chinese map that Delhi says lays claim to its territory.

India protested after Beijing released the map showing north-eastern Arunachal Pradesh state and the disputed Aksai Chin plateau as China’s territory.

Beijing responded by saying its neighbours should refrain from “over-interpreting” the issue.

Meanwhile, media reports say Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to skip next week’s G20 leaders talks in Delhi.

Unconfirmed reports suggest Premier Li Quang will attend instead. Mr Xi had earlier confirmed he would travel to Delhi for the meeting from 9-10 September – but China’s foreign ministry would not confirm his attendance when asked to do so at a regular press briefing on Thursday.

Unidentified sources told Reuters news agency that he cancelled his plan over the map controversy. The BBC could not independently verify the claim.

India is not the only country to object to the map – on Thursday, the Philippines and Malaysia issued protests against China’s claim of ownership over most of the South China Sea in the map. Taiwan – which China says is a breakaway province that will eventually be under Beijing’s control – also objected to its inclusion in the map.
