Men are TWICE as likely to suffer a heart attack as women

0

The NHS will offer men blood pressure checks at the barbers as new research shows they are twice as likely as women to have a heart attack.

Health leaders have revealed an additional 2.5 million free checks will be rolled out in the community each year as part of a drive to target men who are reluctant to go to the doctors.

They estimate the move could help prevent more than 1,350 heart attacks and strokes every year. High blood pressure is the third biggest risk factor for a heart attack or stroke, behind smoking and poor diet.

Yet many men and women remain unaware they have it because there are often no obvious symptoms.

Doctors want more lifesaving checks to be offered at barbers, churches, mosques, community centres and community clubs – in a bid to cases early.

It comes as new research presented at the world’s largest heart conference, shows the relative risk of heart attacks for British men is twice as high as it is for women.

More than 20,000 men and women in the UK aged over 40 were tracked between 1993 and 2018.

Compared to women, the relative risk for men of experiencing heart attacks and peripheral artery disease was two-fold higher.

They also had a 50 per cent higher risk of heart failure and atrial fibrillation, according to the results presented at European Society of Cardiology Congress.

Led by the University of Aberdeen, the study suggested men have a 42 per cent higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

Researchers adjusted for a range of factors including ethnicity, deprivation, BMI, physical activity, alcohol intake and smoking status.

They found that men were more likely to experience a heart attack younger than women, typically experiencing them around the age of 50 compared to between 52-60 in women.

‘Men had a higher risk of incident cardiovascular disease throughout their lifetime than women, but these sex differences were most pronounced for myocardial infarction and peripheral artery disease, followed by atrial fibrillation, heart failure and cardiovascular mortality,’ the study concluded.

Lead researcher Dr Tiberiu Pana, an honorary research fellow at Aberdeen and a junior doctor in the NHS, said: ‘The advice is that men should start looking early at risk factors, like obesity, lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption, and reach out to their GP to get those things addressed.

‘The earlier the better. There’s no harm in minimising your cardiovascular risk.’

Every year there are 100,000 hospital admissions due to heart attacks, one every five minutes.

The NHS has doubled the number of blood pressure checks it offers to people over 40 in the last year.

Figures published today reveal the total number of blood pressure checks delivered by pharmacy teams in May this year was 150,000, more than doubled the 58,000 delivered in May 2022.

Officials have now given the go-ahead for a huge expansion of the scheme following successful pilots.

Dr David Crichton, chief medical officer at NHS South Yorkshire, said expanding the scheme to locations like barbershops would allow doctors to ‘connect with people who wouldn’t usually have their blood pressure checked’.

Experts said it was important to stress that women too also face significant risks of heart attacks and strokes.

Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan, of the British Heart Foundation, said: ‘This large study again highlights that men more commonly have heart attacks at a younger age than women.

‘Coronary heart disease is the most common killer of men.

‘If we consider the effects of heart disease over a lifetime we need to remember that it costs lives for both men and women.

‘Eating a healthy, balanced diet, being physically active, managing your weight and attending health checks when offered, can all help improve your chances of being free of cardiovascular conditions.’

Professor Bola Owolabi, NHS director of healthcare inequalities, said the plan would lead to easier access for those who are most at risk.

‘Whether it is the local church, mosque, community centre or a dominoes club – delivering blood pressure checks in the most convenient places to make it as easy as possible for people to check their risk.’

David Webb, chief pharmaceutical officer for England, said: ‘With the number of people living with major illnesses including heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions set to grow substantially over the coming years, it has never been more important to put in place preventative measures like easy to access blood pressure checks that can pick up the early signs and risks.’

At least 73 killed as fire engulfs five-storey building in Johannesburg

Firefighters putting out the fire in South Africa

At least 73 people, including seven children, have died in a fire in a multi-storey building in the centre of Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest city, emergency services have said.

In one of the country’s worst such tragedies in living memory, emergency management services said a further 43 people had been injured in the blaze, which broke out early on Thursday.

People had been evacuated from the building, and an emergency services spokesperson said a search and recovery operation was under way. It was likely the death toll would rise, Robert Mulaudzi said, and it was not immediately clear what caused the blaze. As of midday on Thursday, authorities had yet to count the casualties on the top two floors of the five-storey building.

“Over 20 years in the service, I’ve never come across something like this,” Mulaudzi said.

There was an “informal settlement” inside the building, Mulaudzi said. “So there [are] a lot of informal structures inside the building. There is a lot of debris that we have to remove.”

Even lunatics know Akufo-Addo has lost it –Kwakye

0
Felix Kwakye Ofosu

A Former Deputy Minister for Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, says the administration of the President Akufo Addo and his Vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has become so terrible to the extent that even “lunatics know this administration has lost the very essence of governance.”

“The very essence of governance has eluded the current administration following the abysmal performance recorded in the last seven years and even lunatics know that this is the most terrible government in the history of Ghana,” he said.

He was addressing the western regional youth wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at a capacity building conference organised in Ellembelle Municipality under the theme: “Effective mobilisation for power: the role of a Youth Organiser.”

He said due to the disastrous performance recorded in government and having been confused about the series of embarrassments suffered, nothing important about governance again lately concerns President Akufo-Addo.

In terms of good governance, he said the NPP members know exactly that they come nowhere close to the NDC.

According to the former Deputy Minister for Communications, anytime the NDC gets an opportunity to govern, the party would develop and improve all spheres of the country’s governance process, as well as the national economy.

Unfortunately, same cannot be said about the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), since what they do basically is to reap the benefits accrued and later destroy everything before leaving office.

For instance, he cited the current state of Ghana’s currency and made damming revelations that it has become the worse performing currency in the world.

To this end, he challenged the youth of NDC to offer adequate information to the Ghanaian electorate, particularly people who are lacking behind in terms of understanding of National issues.

He, however, ruled out the assertion that the NDC and NPP were the same, following the aforementioned comparison made.

He stressed that anyone comparing the two political parties on grounds of performance was either an NPP member who is disappointed in the current administration or seriously lacking adequate information, hence the need to help those people comprehend issues with facts.

Continuing, the youthful orator assured the teaming youth of the NDC that the prevailing circumstance in the country would automatically determine the outcome of the 2024 general elections.

“Hardship would determine outcome of 2024 general elections,” he emphasised.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu revealed that the number of Ghanaian youth, who form the nucleus of the productive working bracket, have been deserting their communities and leaving the country in  droves following the excruciating hardship they are enduring under the current administration.

The youth, he indicated, were deserting the country because they did not have hope in the leadership of the country.

On his part, the leader of NDC’s legal team, Lawyer Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo, mesmerised the NDC youth, when speaking on the topic: ” Youth mobilisation, law and political dynamics: the role of an activist.”

The legal luminary took his time to explain the country’s electoral laws, electoral processes and dangers associated with agents committing themselves without verification and authentication of electoral figures, among others.

Any attempt to do the unthinkable, he warned, would plunge the party into defeat at the polling station level.

Therefore, he appealed to the youth organisers to work in tandem with branch executives to facilitate the timely and cautious collation of figures with effectiveness and efficiency.

Godly Leaders Are Called And Empowered

Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss.

Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so.

They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. – Daniel 6:1-4

INTRODUCTION
Nations, business organizations and churches rise and fall, with leaders as the main architects. The Holy Bible is not silent about types of leaders. The book of Proverbs 29:2 states that “When the righteous thrive, people rejoice; when the wicked rule, people groan.”

We have reached a stage in world history where the leadership qualities of some of the characters in the Bible should be revisited and meaningful lessons drawn for emulations and edification. Leaders control resources and therefore they can be a bane or blessing to their societies and the entire world depending on the character they exhibit.

Features of Godly Leaders

A. A good leader seeks God’s direction.
Godly leader must have a clear picture about where they are going. The destination picture has to inspire people to jump in and chase after the vision with them.

Jesus had His destination in mind. He told His disciples to believe in God and also in Him; that in His Father’s house are many mansions, and that He was going to prepare a place for the saved. Proverbs 16:3 says: “Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.”

And verse 9 concludes, “A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.” A good leader seeks the Lord, commits his way to the Lord, and the Lord establishes the next steps. God has the blueprint plan of our lives, written in the palm of His hand. We have to pray to Him. Isaiah 49:16 – “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.”

B. A good leader seeks wisdom from God
All leaders must have God’s wisdom. Jesus Himself was filled with God’s wisdom and grace. “And the child grew and became strong; He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on Him.” – Luke 2:40. Wisdom is different from mere knowledge. The wise leader can see farther than others.

His spiritual discernment is what sets him apart as God’s leader. ‘The difference between a wise and foolish man is this: the former sees much, thinks much, and speaks little; but the latter speaks more than he either sees or thinks’ – William Scott Downey

C. A good leader is modest, not arrogant.
“Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished” – Proverbs 16:5. Modesty is an attitude of propriety and decency in dress, grooming, language and behaviour. If we are modest, we do not draw undue attention to ourselves. Instead, we seek to “glorify God in body, and in spirit”

D. Godly leaders exhibit Integrity.
“Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established through righteousness” – Proverbs 16:12. Personal integrity is demonstrated by who we are and what we do when no one is looking. Integrity connotes a deep commitment to do the right thing for the right reason regardless of the circumstances.

“Integrity is all-encompassing. It’s not something you demonstrate at home or church and set on a shelf at work. People of integrity don’t live double lives; their morals, ethics, treatment of others and overall character are the same wherever they are, whatever they are doing.” – John Maxwell.

E. Godly leaders seek good advisers.
“For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure” – Proverbs 11:14.Every effective leader needs advice and seeks advice. The ability to listen to the advice of others is the mark of a great leader. Proverbs 12:15 says,“

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel”.
The important point to remember is to stay open, listen to everyone but be selective in what you pick from them.

F. A good leader is a peacemaker
“When a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to eat peace with him,” – Proverbs 16:7.Yet, so many leaders aren’t interested in examining an opposing viewpoint or other ideas.

A working definition of a peacemaker is someone who is actively seeking to reconcile people to God and to one another. A godly leader does not take sides in a conflict; rather, he or she seeks to reconcile warring factions.

G. Godly leaders have compassion
“If a king judges the poor with fairness, his throne will always be secured” – Proverbs 29:14. Jesus is the ultimate model of making time for the poor, the outcast, and children. He was naturally drawn to the weak people who needed an advocate. One of the hallmarks of a godly leader is to help the destitute and administer justice without a grain of partiality.

H. Godly leaders don’t seek for public approval
“fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe” – Proverbs 29:25. The greatest freedom is having nothing to prove and no one to impress. Godly leaders are more concerned about pleasing God than their popularity with men.

I. Godly leaders submit to God
“A king’s heart is the hand of the Lord; he directs it like a water course wherever he pleases” – Proverbs 21:1. This is the most important characteristic of a good leader. When one is submissive to God and His Holy Spirit, God will direct the person into the ways He can glorify him the best.

Feature: Rewriting Ghana’s History just to Discard J.B. Danquah Re: Can This Stupidity Stop?

0
Feature

I thought we are very mature in this country, since been called a Ghanaian, ranks one, higher up among Africans. Unfortunately, some harebrained Ghanaians are embarking on some stupidity funfair to mislead Ghanaians and re-write history to suit their weak ideology and faith.

It is again, all about J.B. Danquah and his ranking among the founders of this nation. First, we are told that he never gave this country the name Ghana. We are been told that in the 1890’s, Rev. J. B. Anaman first talked about the name Ghana, for the Gold Coast. Then came James Kwagir Aggrey and followed by Lady Luggard before J.B. Danquah coined up the name. All the same, J.B. is said to have nothing to do with re-naming the Gold Coast, Ghana.

Based on this argument then, Dr Kwame Nkrumah should not be credited for the call for African Unity, where all its nations will be united as the United States of Africa.

This idea was originally promoted by three West African gentlemen who formed the West African Students Union (WASU) in the UK in August 1925. These three, Dr. Bankole-Bright of the Union for Students of African Descent; J.B. Danquah of the Gold Coast Students Union and Lapido Solanke of Nigerian Progress Union brought togethertheir groups to form WASU.

WASU was to take steps to create a United States of West Africa which would eventually lead to the creation of a United Africa. WASU’s first president was W. Davidson Carrol of Gambia; its first Vice-President was J.B. Danquah of the Gold Coast; its first Secretary was Lapido Solanke of Nigeria and its first Treasurer/Financial Secretary was J. Akanni Doherry of Nigeria.

Nkrumah joined WASU after he went to the UK in 1945 and later became its vice-president. And the idea of African unity came from J.B. Danquah and WASU and Nkrumah who was indoctrinated with this idea from J.B. Danquah and Co., later championed it.

In 1965, the idea of a United States of Africa was accepted by all twenty-seven independent African nations at that time. Ideology however thwarted this. Seven of them, including Ghana, belonged to the Socialist group and insisted on a command economyfor the United Africa. The other twenty, belonged to the capitalist group and would prefer a free market economy. Nkrumah made sure the majority never had their way, so to this date, WASU’s proposal for a United States of Africa has not materialised.

The question is, when he was vice president of WASU, what was Nkrumah’s idea of a United Africa since the idea of African Unity was not originally his?

And the fact that Nkrumah led us to independence is not to be disputed, however he was not the founder of this nation but just one of the lot. Apart from the Asantes who were determined never to be colonized in the first place, the founders of this nation include great names like John Mensah Sarbah, Jacob Wilson Sey, J.E. Casely Hayford, Kwegyir Aggrey, Kobina Sekyi and J.B. Brown who were founding members of the Aborigine Rights Protection Society (ARPS) founded in 1897.

The ARPS was formed as a result of reactions and protests by chiefs and the intelligentsia following the British final erosion of powers and sovereignty of the indigenes. The Society began the first steps towards gaining our freedom from colonialism.

And by the way when he became president, Nkrumah eroded all the powers that was left of our chiefs when he passed the Chief Recognition Bill (1959) where only he must enstool/enskin a chief and only he can remove a chief from office.

The list of founders of this nation grew as many stood up to be counted as anti-colonialists. With the formation of the UGCC, the last batch of founders came with Nkrumah as the last of them.

The socialists, especially, the Nkrumaists will not accept this and so the comedy began. Somewhere in October last year, they paraded a frail old man, by name Kobina Taylor, on national television to back up claims that J.B. Danquah did not name this country, Ghana. Taylor rather came to expose his lack of knowledge of the history of this country and celebrated his ignorance with such pomp and pageantry.

First, Kobina Taylor claimed he was Nkrumah’s personal secretary who was also his confidante, yet no one in Nkrumah’s CPP remembers him.

Kobina Taylor told us that Nkrumah put together the initials of some ethnic groups in this country to arrive at the word, Ghana. They were Guans-Hausa-Akan-Nzema/Northern region-Accra/Alata.

And Ghanaians allowed such stupidity to pass freely by? When were the Hausas and Alata ethnic groups in Ghana? And by the way are Accra and Northern region, ethnic groups? So, are the socialists now telling us that the name Ghana was never derived from the Ancient Ghana Empire?

But what is so shocking is that some members of the intelligentsia have jumped into the mud to muddy Ghanaian history by discarding J.B. Danquah.

Recently, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo suggested that the University of Ghana will be renamed after J.B. Danquah. All hell broke loose as if to say that this is the first time such a suggestion has been made. And the socialists once again unleashed themselves on Ghanaians and went on an attacking spree, led by some of their well-educated ones who chose to sound infantile and exhibit lack of knowledge.

One such fellow was this lawyer called Yaw Frimpong Anokye who displayed his deep hatred for all that is J.B. Danquah but ends up exhibiting his ignorance of the truth.

His accounts were so misleading but unfortunately were swallowed hook, line and sinker by ignorant people. All that he said to counter the idea of re-naming University of Ghana was on the re-location of the University College of the Gold Coast from Achimota to Legon.

For God’s sake the University College of the Gold Coast was established on August 11, 1948 and was located in Achimota. The university has acknowledged J.B. Danquah as the one who first lodged a strong protest against the British Government, who had intended to established a single university for British West Africa, in Ibadan, Nigeria. J.B. Danquah’s protest was supported by prominent groups and individuals of the then Gold Coast and this made the British decided to establish a university in the Gold Coast.

Lawyer Yaw Frimpong Anokye lied big time when he said it was people like Sir Arku Korsah, J.E. Casely Hayford, Rev. Prof Baeta and Edward Asafu-Adjaye who petitioned the British administration through Parliament for the university to be re-located to Legon, adding that it was when they got to Parliament that J.B. Danquah joined the petition on the floor of the House.

He also concluded that it was the chiefs and people of La who gave up their land at Legon for the new campus of the university to be sited.

Readers, the University College of Gold Coast was first located in Achimota in 1948. It was relocated to Legon in 1951. Now, J.E. Casely Hayford died in 1930, so how could he have joined a petition to Parliament in 1950? And again, the first Parliament of the Gold Coast came after the general elections of February 8, 1951.

And from what he said, it could not be possible for the British Government to have accepted the petition and money raised by the people to have administration blocks and lecture halls put up by 1951. Mind you, Legon Hall, the first hall of residence was opened to students in September 1952.

And one could hear this lawyer, lying again when he said the university was re-located to Legon, on a plot of land belonging to the chiefs and people of La. The university as it stands is on Osu land. The area across the main road housing the Police Station, Legon Hospital, Senior village and beyond is part of La.

It was stated in other records that J.B. Danquah’s only contribution for the establishment of the university was when he donated towards the construction of the buildings at its new location in Legon. But Yaw Anokye Frimpong is also stating that J.B. Danquah never neared anything Legon and University of Ghana.

The question remains that, who sent a strong petition to the British Government about the need to establish a university in the Gold Coast? All proper records including records in the University of Ghana, mention J.B. Danquah.

And unfortunately, this is what our socialists are madly against. But as it is always said, the truth remains the same throughout the ages but the lie, will always keep changing.

One such lie was that it was Otumfuo Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II who organised farmers in Ashanti to contributed to raise funds to re-locate the university. The initial capital of £ 897,000.00 was raised by cocoa farmers in the Gold Coast, through the Cocoa Marketing Board.

On the side, Lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong further exposed his lack of knowledge of history. He had earlier disputed its definition as the records of past events but rather something like history is a process from the past into the future.

He stated that the Gas defeated the Asantes in a battle. The only battle the Asantes fought against Gas, was the Battle of Dodowa (Kantamanso). It was not a direct battle between the Asantes and the Gas.

That battle of August 7, 1826 was a battle between the Asantes on one side and the British, Gas, Dangbes, Fantis, Denkyiras, Akwamus and Akyems on the other. If Yaw Anokye Frimpong wants to preach history he must learn from resource persons and not just make things up.

We, Africans complain a lot that the Whites came and distorted our history. For example, it is in history books that David Livingstone was the one who discovered the River Niger. Such writings are to make the Whites have undue superiority over us. Then here we have our own blood-kinsmen distorting history just to deny those who need to be recognised as playing key roles in our lives.

This stupidity must stop.

Hon Daniel Dugan.

Lyon unveil Ghanaian forward Ernest Nuamah

French club Olympique Lyonnais, commonly known as Lyon, have officially announced the signing of Ghana forward Ernest Nuamah from Nordsjaelland.

The confirmation of the transfer came after the young talent successfully completed his medical assessment.

In a statement published on Lyon’s official website, the club expressed its enthusiasm for the addition of Ernest Nuamah to their roster.

The statement highlighted Nuamah’s potential and considered him one of the future promising talents in his position.

Lyon also noted that he would be the third Ghanaian footballer to join the club, following in the footsteps of legendary midfielder Michaël Essien and former Ghana assistant captain John Mensah.

Nuamah showcased remarkable form for FC Nordsjaelland in the current season, netting five goals and contributing one assist in six matches for the Tigers.

His departure from Nordsjaelland was acknowledged with a farewell video from the club, preceding the official unveiling video released by Lyon.

Champions League Draw: Newcastle in group of death, Man United get tough Bayern test, Arsenal in comfortable draw, City gets Leipzig again

0

Newcastle have been handed a stern test on their return to the Champions League, while Manchester United will take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League Group Stage in Group A and holders Man City take on RB Leipzig in Group G.

The draw for the 2023-24 Champions League took place on Thursday night in Monaco, with all 32 qualifiers learning their fates for the upcoming competition. Spain were represented by five teams, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad joined by Sevilla after they won the Europa League, easing out Jose Mourinho’s Roma in the final.

With all of the continent’s biggest sides in action, it is sure to be a tough competition for all clubs, but Group F is arguably the ‘group of death’, which sees Paris Saint-Germain take on Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Premier League side Newcastle.

Group A

United take on Bayern Munich, Copenhagen and Galatasaray. Aside from Newcastle’s unofficial ‘Group of Death’, Man United arguably have the toughest task of the English contingent, coming up against Bayern Munich in a replay of the iconic 1999 final.

It is a quick return to England for Harry Kane, who left Tottenham for Bayern Munich in a huge £100 million deal.

However the England skipper will soon find himself back in his home nation, making the trip to Old Trafford as part of Thomas Tuchel’s side’s group stage campaign.

Group B

Arsenal will face European specialists and Europa League holders Sevilla but a group also containing PSV Eindhoven, convincing conquerors of Glasgow Rangers, and Lens should hold no terrors. Last season’s Premier League runners-up Arsenal were handed a comfortable draw in Group B on their return to the competition after a six-year absence.

Group C

The competition’s record winners, Real Madrid, came out of Pot 2 to be picked against Serie A holders Napoli in a mouth-watering clash, with Braga and Union Berlin making up the quartet in Group C.

Group D

Last year’s finalists Inter Milan were in the second pot, and went into Group D, where they find Portuguese champions Benfica, Austria’s RB Salzburg and Real Sociedad.

Group E

Scottish champions Celtic will take on Spanish giants Atletico Madrid, Eredivisie holders Feyenoord and Italian outfit Lazio in Group E.

Group F

Newcastle’s long-awaited return to Europe’s elite competition has been much anticipated after they finished fourth in the Premier League last season – but their draw could barely have been more difficult. Newcastle United’s return to the Champions League has given them arguably the toughest group to navigate towards the knockout phase after the draw in Monaco.

Paris St Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan await in Group F for Eddie Howe’s side and, while this presents the toughest of tests, it also offers up the prospect of some truly special nights on Tyneside as Newcastle attempt to demonstrate their new ambitions against elite opposition.

The rest of the Premier League clubs will be cautiously optimistic of progress while Newcastle will hope a fevered atmosphere at St. James’ Park will fuel their attempts to reach the last 16.

Group G

Man City once again find themselves in Group G for the second successive season but will also face Leipzig for the fifth and sixth times in the competition since September 2021.

Holders Manchester City, meanwhile, will be overwhelming favourites to reach the last 16 and top their group, in which they will play RB Leipzig, Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys of Switzerland.

Manchester City will have a relatively straight-forward Group G to negotiate. And for Copenhagen it is the second competition in a row where they will find themselves making the trip to Manchester un the group stages, having come up against City last term.

Following the group stage draw, UEFA’s player and coach of the season awards were handed out, with Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland receiving gongs, as well as Spanish World Cup winner Aitana Bonmati and Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman.

Group H

Xavi’s Barcelona were first into Group H, where they find Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk and debutants Royal Antwerp.

Group Stage draw in full

Group A

Bayern Munich (Ger), Manchester United (Eng), Copenhagen (Den), Galatasaray (Tur)

Group B

Sevilla (Spa), Arsenal (Eng), PSV Eindhoven (Net), Lens (Fra)

Group C

Group D

Adoagyiri Finally Catches Fire … 2 shot dead; several others injured in a protracted chieftaincy ruckus

0
The injured
Richard Asirifi, allegedly shot dead

Adoagyiri, near Nsawam, in the Eastern Region of Ghana has finally been turned into a gun battle field, after several warnings from factions associated with the chieftaincy dispute in the town apparently failed to attract the attention of the National Security (NS).

These factions are being backed by both Akyem Abuakwa and Akyem Kotoku paramountcies, which are claiming ownership of the town.

These two chieftaincy institutions have issued several press statements, including the holding of press conferences to warn that they are not prepared to cede an inch of the town to their opponents.

Though The Chronicle deliberately published these stories at its front pages to draw the attention of the National Security to the looming danger, it appears nothing was done about it.

The paper cannot, however, confirm or otherwise if the Kan Dapaah led NS did make the approach but the ‘warring factions’ failed to listen to them.

The faction, which is being supported by Akyem Kotoku, claimed Adoagyiri has a legitimate chief who was installed about fifteen years ago and had already sworn allegiance to Kotoku paramount chief.

Akyem Abuakwa rejected this claim with the Okyenhene promising to install a new chief for the town, after the one who owed allegiance to him (Okyenhene) died recently, because the land belongs to Akyem Abuakwa and he would not allow anyone to take it over from him.

Akyem Abuakwa subsequently went ahead to install their own chief for Adoagyiri, with the stool name Barima Adu Korkor III.

This decision did not go down well with the Kotoku faction, which called a news conference to threaten bloodshed if the decision was not reversed. The Kotoku faction insisted that they have a chief and would not accept any rival chief. Earlier reports suggest that this is not the first time a shooting incident has occurred in the town.

The Chronicle understands that the latest shooting incident occurred when the newly installed chief went to Kyebi to swear the oath of allegiance to Okyenhene on Tuesday.

Information gathered at Adoagyiri indicates that misunderstanding arose when Barima Adu Korkor III arrived home from Kyebi and the resultant exchange of gunfire resulted in the deaths of Kwame Apietu and Richard Asirifi.

Kwame Apietu, this reporter was told, returned from United States of America about a month ago to perform the final funeral rites of his late sister.

The bodies of the two have been conveyed to Nsawam government hospital morgue for preservation.

Those who were caught in the cross fire and suffered several degrees of injuries were also rushed to the same hospital for medical attention.

Meanwhile, the police have beefed up security in the troubled town to prevent an escalation of the already volatile situation.

A New Patriotic Party (NPP)  Presidential Aspirant,  Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has strongly condemned the attack, last Saturday on Ali Zakaria, North East regional coordinator for the ‘Alan for President’ campaign team at Naliregu, the regional capital.

Kyerematen, who has had Mr. Zakaria flown down for treatment in Accra, expressed his disgust over the incidence while visiting him at the hospital.

An obviously worried Kyerematen bemoaned the fact that such acts of violence are alien to the party and fly in the face of the principles of fairness and tolerance, which had been the attraction of the party over the years.

“We all joined the NPP because of the commitment to the rich values of the party that has sustained it over the years.

But when we cannot conduct ourselves properly as a family in a limited elections of less than 1000 people, how do we hope to conduct a free and fair elections in one that involves 200,000 plus delegates when we go to choose a leader in November,” he said.

Kyerematen called for a thorough investigation into the incident by the party hierarchy and asked that no attempt should be made to try and sweep it under the carpet as that would not be tolerated.

Last Saturday, known faces within the camp of one of the aspirants violated the voting rules of the Super Delegates conference at Naliregu, which led to disturbances and  the beating up of Mr. Zakaria

The voters, who openly showed their secret ballots to the crowd after voting, in total disregard to laid down party rules, descended on Mr. Zakaria when he questioned them on the appropriateness of their action .

His question appeared to have infuriated known delegates and members of the said candidate who subjected him to merciless beating, leading a swollen face and puffed up eyes.

“Known forces within the camp of ….voted and showed their secret ballots to the crowd and when I asked them why they were doing that, they started beating me.

They are known faces within Nalerigu and North East, and are all affiliated to the camp of the said candidate”, he said.
