JEQ Foundation presents laptop to six university scholarship recipients

0

A USA-based nonprofit organization, the Joseph & Elizabeth Quansah (JEQ) Foundation, has presented new laptops to selected Foundation’s Ghanaian college/university scholarship recipients.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Co-Founder/Co-President of the Foundation Prof. Joseph Emmanuel Quansah, said the Foundation was set up with the wife to support especially excellent but needy students in Ghana to ensure that they have at least a basic first degree.

“Our hope and ultimate goal is to support as many Ghanaian students as possible in order to provide them the opportunity of having a good first degree. This will require resources and we would love to have corporate bodies to partner with the JEQ Foundation to provide academic and educational opportunities for students, especially Ghanaian students who are excellent and smart,” he said.

The presentation was made by representatives of the Foundation in Ghana,  with the attendance of some of the current and past recipients of the Foundation’s scholarships.

The JEQ foundation was founded in 2019 in the USA to support Ghanaian students who excel academically but lack financial resources to enroll in tertiary education by providing full tuition/residential scholarships to cover all  years of a recipient’s academic program, and laptops to selected students who have gained admission to undergraduate programmes in public or private educational institutions.

In addition to the financial support, the foundation provides academic advising, mentorship, and internship opportunities for scholarship recipients.

“We make sure we provide academic advising to all our scholars, we provide mentorship and also provide internships to enable our scholars to have the needed industrial experiences even before they complete their degree programs” Prof. Quansah said.

“What we’ve done or what we hope to do is that through this partnership, we’ll have our students, who mostly would graduate top in their classes, be able to have internships with these industries. Moreover, this creates a pipeline from college to industry. Partner industries get the opportunity to meet these students during the internship period. They get to know those who are good, and they can recruit them, making it a win-win situation,” he added.

The foundation encourages recipients to be socially responsible by asking them to perform any kind of community service at least 15 hours a year while under scholarship and to give back in the future by supporting other excellent students when they become gainfully employed,

The Foundation in 2022 offered 21 full tuition and housing scholarships.

Overall, the foundation from 2020 to date has awarded 43 individual tuition/housing scholarships and presented new laptops to deserving students.

Over 50% of all scholarship recipients have received new laptops based on their continued academic excellence and community service.

JEQ Foundation’s scholarship recipients are in universities and colleges all over Ghana, including

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, University of Development Studies (UDS), and Takoradi Technical University (TTU), among others.

Some of the collaborators of the JEQ Foundation are Adumoss Engineering Ghana and MOBA80 USA.

“We have an MOU and a partnership with Adumoss Engineering Company, who for instance, sponsor two of our students, so we use this as an opportunity to also request partnership with local companies and local institutions to support what we do in order for us to support our youth and educate the next generation of Ghanaians.”

A beneficiary Abdul Rahaman Lansah of the University of Development Studies expressed appreciation to JEQ Foundation on behalf of his colleague recipients for their support.

KATH undergoes major facelift to improve patient care

Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah - KATH CEO

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) underwent the largest facelift in the hospital’s recent history during the first half of this year which saw many deteriorated facilities receiving some repairs and paintings as part of an ongoing beatification exercise to improve patient care and operations at the hospital.

Consequently, facilities such as the Doctors’ Flats, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Laundry, Breast Care, Finance, Human Resources blocks and the fence wall of the Family Medicine Directorate which were all in a deplorable state, have been given a major facelift.

Addressing the 2023 Mid-Year Performance Review in Kumasi yesterday, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KATH, Prof Otchere Addai-Mensah, noted that among the key projects that would engage the attention of management for the second part of the year will be to complete a number of on-going projects at the hospital including the Assisted Reproductive Technology(ART) Centre, Patients Relatives Hostel, expansion and refurbishment of the Dialysis Centre and the renovation and modernisation of the Main Theatre of the hospital at the cost of about GH¢1.5 million.

Prof. Addai-Mensah disclosed that there has been a significant progress in the performance of the hospital in the first six months the year under review, compared to the same period in 2022 and explained that management consciously implemented a number of measures to improve patients’ experience at the hospital.

The CEO said “Specialist O.P.D cases registered for the period was 133,267 as  against a target of 123,971 representing a positive variance of 7.50 percent. Primary Care O.P.D cases also went up to 31,378 which was 14 percent above the set target of 27,500 cases and Radiotherapy services was 3,036 compared to the 3,260 that were recorded”.

He said all these could not have been achieved without a “combination of interventions including improved staff output, early start of clinics, availability of medical consumables, laboratory reagents and pharmaceutical products, as well as enhanced supervision and enforcement of discipline by management.

Touching on the introduction of payment of hospital bills through MoMo and POS for the first time in the history of the hospital, Prof. Addai-Mensah noted that ” the use of Momo and POS payments options for settling patients’ bills has proven so popular that cumulative payments made through them to date since their introduction in March 2023 stands around Gh¢2.2 million.

He said in line with the hospital’s theme for the year which is “Driving a customer-centric agenda for health delivery: the role of management, staff and stakeholders”, strict enforcement of discipline among members of staff has resulted in better patient care at the hospital.

Management, he said, has also increased the medical package for each staff and their families by 25 percent and the thirteenth month allowances owed to members of the Health Services Workers Union were paid, apart from general increase in the levels of allowances paid to line managers at the hospital.

Prof. Addai-Mensah disclosed that between January and June 2023 under review, 16 members of staff were given sanctions including a dismissal, warnings and suspensions without salary for various infractions of the disciplinary code of the hospital.

Amazing Health Benefits of Water Yam

0
Water yam

Water yam, also regarded as wild yam, is among the oldest food crops we have around. It originated from South-East Asia, Burma and was introduced to Africa far back in the 16th century. Ever since then, this superfood has grown to become the most common yam species in West Africa and certain parts of the world. The botanical name of water yam is Dioscorea alata.

Water yam is widely grown and consumed in Nigeria. It is used to eat stew, egg sauce, vegetable soup and palm oil. This article discusses the health benefits of water yam.

Nutritional Value of Water Yam

Health Benefits of Water Yam

Nutritional value of water yam

Water yam is packed with a lot of nutrients that can help boost human health by a significant margin. They include; Vitamins C and E, potassium, iron, calcium, copper, phosphorus, carbohydrate, and dietary fibre.

  1. Rich in antioxidants

Antioxidants refer to a set of compounds produced in the body and derived from foods. Part of the things they do in the body is to help shield the cells from damage induced by potentially harmful free radicals.

When there is an excess of free radicals in the body, it may result in a state called oxidative stress, which may cause damage to the DNA as well as some other vital structures in the cells.

Antioxidant-rich foods like water yam contain potent properties, including Beta-carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, etc. – all of which are severally proven to be effective in boosting blood antioxidant levels to combat oxidative stress and prevent related diseases.

  1. Aids diabetes treatment

However, some studies reveal that water yam is capable of improving glucose metabolism stabilizing the rate of digestion, and regulating blood sugar levels, making it an ideal food for people with diabetes.

Another way water yam can be of immense benefit to people with the disease is that it is digested and absorbed by the body in a slow manner and triggers no blood sugar spikes. In addition to that, the yam also contains sugar which adds a natural sweetness to your meals and lowers your thirst for added sugar.

  1. Lowers blood pressure levels

Water yam is an excellent source of potassium, one of the key minerals for regulating blood pressure. Since many people rarely eat potassium-rich foods, fruits and vegetables and consume sodium in higher quantity, the potassium content in their body may become extremely low, which pose a great threat to your health.

For instance, when you are deficient in potassium and eat high amounts of sodium, you may eventually develop high blood pressure, or what is called “hypertension.”

Water yam contains a wide number of powerful properties, including Dioscorin. This particular helps to block the angiotensin-converting enzyme, which may further result in increased kidney blood flow and lowered blood pressure.

  1. Reduces blood cholesterol levels

This is yet another important health benefit of water yam – the ability to lower blood cholesterol levels.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in human blood. They are needed by the body for proper functioning and the formation of healthy cells.

However, having too much of cholesterol [hypercholesterolemia] can expose you to a lot of heart-related diseases. The reason is that high cholesterol can trigger the body to start developing fatty deposits in the blood vessels, and as they increase, it may make it difficult for blood to flow through your arteries. This is among the causal factors of heart attack and stroke.

With that being said, it will interest you to know that hypercholesterolemia usually has no symptoms; you can only detect it via a blood test. Some of the factors that may increase your cholesterol levels include hereditary factors, unhealthy lifestyle choices, less physical activity, and certain medications. However eating foods with low cholesterol can also help

Water yam is packed with fiber and some other potent ingredients, most of which are severally linked with reduced ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol levels.

  1. Improves digestive health and prevents certain digestive conditions

Water yam contains a good amount of fibre, one of the key properties that play a significant role in digestive health.

The fiber in water yam helps to normalize bowel movements and fuels the colon cells, which in turn aids the flow of the digestive tract for improved digestion and reduced risk of digestion-related conditions.

In addition to the above, it was discovered that people who consume fibre-rich foods have lower rates of constipation as compared with those who ate diets with low fibre content.

Are you struggling with loose stools, bloating, or even diarrhoea? Water yam might be an ideal solution for you. The fiber in it helps to relief digestion-related problems simply by bulking up the stool and retaining more water.

  1. Promotes excellent vision

Water yam has fair amounts of vitamin E and beta-carotene, both of which play a major role in eye health. In fact, Vitamin E to be precise can help improve vision in myriads of ways. This antioxidant helps to protect eye cells from free radicals and shields it against macular degeneration and cataracts, two of the most common age-related eyesight conditions.

Having said that, some experts suggest that one of the best ways to improve vision health is by consuming foods that contain fair content of Vitamin E and other eye-friendly properties, which includes water yam, peanuts, hazelnuts, almonds, Mustard greens, Swiss chard, spinach, kale, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, cereals, citrus fruit, kiwi, peppers, papaya, salmon, avocado, red bell peppers, broccoli, olive oil, wheat germ, to name a few.

Bottom Line

Having considered some of the health benefits of water yam, we can boldly recommend it for people who really care about their health and overall wellbeing. In fact, it will interest you to know that this yam isn’t just delicious but can also be used as a laxative, worm repellent, as well as a remedy for certain health conditions, including fever, tumours, and inflamed haemorrhoids.

Monchengladbach led at the break through Ko Itakura, but Leroy Sane equalised on 58 minutes.

Bellingham scores again to rescue Real Madrid against Getafe

Bellingham scores in stoppage-time

Jude Bellingham rescued Real Madrid with a stoppage-time winner against Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Getafe started well when Mayoral opened the scoring, rounding Kepa Arrizabalaga and finishing emphatically despite Antonio Rudiger’s best efforts to recover.

England midfielder Bellingham thought he’d won Real a penalty midway through the first half but VAR reversed the decision, before Luka Modric saw a header tipped over the bar.

It took just two second-half minutes and a lengthy VAR check for Joselu to level as he fired in from close range after the ball fell kindly from a sumptuous Modric cross.

With Madrid frantically searching for a winner, Bellingham pounced after David Soria spilled Nacho’s shot to secure a fortuitous victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

The match was also the first played under a retractable roof at the stadium, with Real starting the season with three away games while the building work was completed.

Haaland’s hat-trick help City secure victory over Fulham

Haaland scores hat-trick

Erling Haaland completed a second-half hat-trick as Manchester City extended their 100% start to the Premier League season with a win over Fulham.

Haaland had set up the opener for Julian Alvarez – and with the score at 2-1 going into the second half, the favour was returned, as the Argentine sent him charging into the box with a fine first-time pass for City’s third.

The Norwegian then kept his nerve to score City’s fourth from the penalty spot after Issa Diop had fouled Alvarez.

Haaland had already been named man of the match when he applied the superb first-time finish to Sergio Gomez’s cut-back to claim yet another match ball.

Fulham would argue the pivotal moment in the game came just before the break, after Tim Ream had equalised within a minute of Alvarez’s opener on the half hour.

Video assistant referee Tony Harrington ruled an offside Manuel Akanji was not interfering with play as Nathan Ake’s 10-yard header bounced past him, even though the Swiss made a play for the ball.

Fulham boss Marco Silva evidently thought otherwise and was booked as he led the protests. Credit: bbc.com

Nottingham Forest secure hard-fought win over Chelsea

Anthony Elanga (L) celebrates after scoring

Substitute Anthony Elanga scored his first Nottingham Forest goal to secure a hard-fought Premier League victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Summer signing Elanga, introduced in first-half added time following an injury to Danilo, struck shortly after the break when he raced on to Taiwo Awoniyi’s pass and slotted home.

Nicolas Jackson missed a glorious opportunity to equalise inside the final 10 minutes, firing over from inside the six-yard box after being teed up by Raheem Sterling.

Jackson had earlier been denied by a last-ditch block by Willy Boly, while £40m deadline day signing Cole Palmer was introduced by manager Mauricio Pochettino, as Chelsea chased a response.

But despite dominating possession, territory and chances, the hosts were punished for failing to take their opportunities by a resolute Forest.

A beaming Nottingham Forest coach embraced Elanga following the full-time whistle as the travelling Forest fans celebrated only their second win in 21 away games since making their Premier League return last season.

Salah scores as Liverpool beat Aston Villa

Mohamed Salah scores

Mohamed Salah put speculation about his future behind him by scoring as Liverpool comfortably beat Aston Villa to continue their strong start to the season in the Premier League.

Dominik Szoboszlai got the hosts up and running after just three minutes, scoring his first goal for the club with a crisp strike through a crowded box.

Villa, who have been scoring for fun since losing 5-1 to Newcastle in their opening game of the season, were far too open at the back as they struggled to deal with Liverpool’s forwards.

The hosts increased their lead in the 22nd minute when Nunez’s shot hit the post and bounced in off the unlucky Matty Cash.

Liverpool looked capable of scoring with every attack in a rampant first half, although Villa’s cause was not helped by an enforced change as centre-back Diego Carlos limped off with an injury inside the opening 20 minutes.

And the lively Nunez went close to scoring his third goal in two games as his shot bounced off the crossbar.

Keeper Alisson made a good stop to push out Cash’s header in the second half, but Salah’s second goal of the season wrapped up a win that moved Liverpool up to third in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Journalists cautioned against too much public exposure

Ian Mortey, a Senior Assistant Editor at the News-Times Corporation, publisher of the Ghanaian Times newspaper has advised journalists in Ghana to be careful of their safety, especially when they go to report on violent demonstrations.

Disguising and positioning themselves strategically among the tensed demonstrators, Mr Mortey said, can make journalists eavesdrop on their grievances to gather facts for their report.

“Remember that during such tense situations, nobody’s safety is guaranteed, particularly if the community or demonstrators dislike journalists. It is, therefore, very important for journalists on the field to prioritise their safety when they go to cover rowdy events.

“Hide your press card when you realise that the grounds are not favourable for you as a journalist and observe the scene. Although you’re enthusiastic to get the news, remember not to be one of their victims,” Ian Mortey schooled members of the Tema Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), at its one-day workshop for its members at the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA).

Speaking on the topic: ‘Safety on the field’, Ian Mortey, who was also a former Vice Chairman for the Tema Regional GJA, mentioned physical assault on journalists by security personnel, road accidents, hostilities by government agencies and threats from politicians as other hazards which have made journalists in Ghana fragile.

These circumstances notwithstanding, Mr Mortey gave the participants a couple of psychological titbits to enable them stay alert as guests of government agencies and politicians.

Though journalism in Ghana is not lucrative, thus making most journalists financially exposed, Mr Mortey said journalists must not allow themselves to be used as tools for settling scores.

Therefore, while going about their duty, he cautioned journalists against the publication of news that can spur indignation, “because when your community or country goes up in the flames, you too will have your losses to count. If you find the news very sensitive, drop it.”

He also reminded journalists to regularly go for medical checkups, given the hustle and bustle and lack of rest they go through daily to gather news.

“Do not allow the passion and accolades you enjoy from the public and your employer to steal your health because if you don’t check your health regularly, the consequences are enormous, especially to your dependants,” he noted.

Despite the numerous challenges that make them fragile, Ian Mortey, the Senior Assistant Editor at the News-Times Corporation, encouraged journalists to practise with passion, flair, prestige modesty, patience and enthusiasm.

NO SECURITY PERSONNEL HAS LEFT JUBILEE HOUSE OVER “UNFAIR

TREATMENT”

The attention of the Office of the President has been drawn to a statement made by Mr. Charles Owusu on Friday, 1st September 2023, at the studios of Peace FM, to the effect that some seventy-seven (77) security personnel at Jubilee House have left their duty posts at Jubilee House because of “unfair treatment’

Mr. Owusu is reported to have stated that “go to Jubilee House and see, the Police, Soldiers and everyone is complaining. It got to a point where almost seventy-seven security personnel decided to leave Jubilee House and go back to their units…

What type of treatment are you giving them?”

The Office of the President would like to put on record that at no point in the tenure of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, from 2017 till date, have seventy-seven security personnel left Jubilee House to their respective units.
