Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong meeting with representatives of labour

The meeting between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and officials of the federal government on the fuel subsidy removal policy ended in a deadlock Monday evening.

The meeting held in Abuja and was attended by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and other leaders.

Earlier in the month, the NLC embarked on a two-day nationwide strike to protest the failure of the Nigerian government to proffer lasting solutions to the challenges caused by fuel subsidy removal.

The union accused the Nigerian government of failure to implement some of its resolutions from its previous meetings.

Earlier, the minister invited the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for talks to avert the two-day strike held between 5 and 6 September.

However, “only the TUC showed up for the meeting,” Mr Lalong was quoted by Channels as saying.

On Monday, Mr Lalong emphasized the willingness of the government to cooperate with the union members to address the demands of the union.

The minister called upon concerned leaders of various bodies to engage in open-minded and constructive dialogue, to enable them bridge any gaps that may exist between the interests of workers and the ultimate goal of driving economic advancement.

Atiku storms Supreme Court, seeks nullification of Tribunal judgment

0
Alhaji Abubakar Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku has approached the Supreme Court seeking a nullification of the Presidential Election Petition Court’s judgement, which on September 6, upheld the declaration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as winner of the 2023 presidential election.

Atiku in the Notice of Appeal predicated on 35 grounds, insisted that the tribunal in the judgment delivered by Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani committed grave error and miscarriage of justice in its findings and conclusion in the petition challenging the declaration of Tinubu as President by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The Notice of Appeal just filed by Atiku’s lead counsel, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, is praying the Supreme Court to set aside the whole findings and conclusions of the Tribunal on the grounds that they did not represent the true picture of the grounds of his petition.

Among others, the former Vice President maintained that the Tribunal erred in law when it failed to nullify the presidential election held on February 25, 2023, on the grounds of non-compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022, when by evidence before the tribunal, INEC conducted the election based on grave and gross misrepresentation contrary to the principles of the Electoral Act 2022 and based on the “doctrine of legitimate expectation”.

‘Nigeria Ready For Business,’ Tinubu Tells Global Energy Industry

President Bola Tinubu meets with ExxonMobil President of Global Upstream Operations, Liam Mallon

President Bola Tinubu has said Nigeria is ready for business, stressing that Africa’s most populous country has the resources and leadership. He stated this in New York on Monday while playing host to a delegation consisting of the global leadership of an oil and gas transnational giant, ExxonMobil.

According to a Tuesday statement by the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, the Nigerian leader said the country is no longer settling for crumbs and leftovers on the investment agenda of the world’s most prolific energy conglomerates.

“Nigeria has never been more ready for business than it is now,” Tinubu was quoted as saying.

“The knotty issues require direct supervision on my part. Despite many contending obligations, I will sit down and oversee the process of removing these encumbrances to job and wealth creation for the Nigerian people.

“We know the industry. We grew up in it. We are positioned to solve the problems, and we are pragmatic, and we will solve the problem,” the President assured.

Tinubu explained that following an illustrious private sector career as a professional accountant in the oil and gas industry, he has proven his capacity to take difficult decisions as President and is best prepared to solve problems and crush all bottlenecks standing in the way of new and large-scale capital flowing into the industry.

On his part, the ExxonMobil President of Global Upstream Operations, Liam Mallon, assured Tinubu that he is aware of the new and personal commitment that the President is bringing to bear on behalf of Nigeria.

Mallon stated that he is well placed to reciprocate the President’s efforts with new investment as he pledged new production of nearly 40,000 bpd in its Nigerian operations in phase one of a new investment push in Nigeria.

CRM will make gas affordable & safe -NPA

0
Cylinder Recirculation Model

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) says the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) will make Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) accessible, affordable and safe.

The CRM programme, which became operational on September 1, 2023 allows bottling plants to fill gas and distribute it to consumers through exchange points.

Mr Obed Kraine Boachie, Head of Gas (in charge of Commercial Regulation), said CRM took away the huge cost of having to set up refilling stations in new areas.

He told the Ghana News Agency that it was capital intensive to set up a gas refilling station, adding that it would take not less than half a million Ghana Cedis to put up a medium to large-size refilling station.

“So, the cost has become a barrier for marketing companies to site such facilities in new areas where LPG facilities are required,” he noted.

Under the CRM, cylinders are filled in bulk at a bottling plant and dispatched to the cylinder exchange points, which are less costly to set up, he said.

“The consumers will come to the exchange point and access the cylinder when they run out. In that way, we can supply LPG in a less costly manner.

“Once we are able to have exchange points situated in the communities, we bring LPG much closer to the people.” Mr Boachie said.

He indicated that under the CRM, anyone who wants to use LPG but did not have a cylinder could still access LPG.

“Currently, if you want to use LPG as a new consumer, you have to purchase a new cylinder, stove, regulator and other accessories involved,” Mr Boachie noted.

He said under the CRM, the bottling company bore the price of the cylinder. The consumer is not expected to go further and pay for the cost of the cylinder.

“The consumer may, however, be required to pay a security deposit – which is a token, to say that you will bring back the cylinder you have taken,” Mr Boachie emphasised.

He said the CRM was a much safer way of bringing LPG to consumers. He noted that with the existing refilling stations, the consumers are exposed to certain risks, as they stand there to fill their cylinders.

“But under CRM, you go and just take the already filled cylinder at the exchange points and so you are not exposed to any of those risks at the refilling stations.”

He said the CRM also saves consumers time because with the refilling system, the consumer spends time carrying the cylinder somewhere to fill it and probably wastes time in the queue to get it filled before coming back to his or her destination.

“All those issues of time wasting go away once you have an exchange point where you can go and pick up a filled cylinder,” Mr Boachie noted.

Dunkwahene lauds gov’t for cocoa price hike

Okofrobour Obeng Nuakoh III - Chief of Dunkwa

Okofrobour Obeng Nuakoh III, the Chief of Dunkwa-on-Offin, in the Central Region, has commended the Akufo-Addo-led government for the increase in the Cocoa price from GH¢850 to GH¢1,308.

The government has since September 9, 2023 announced a new cocoa price at the opening of the 2023/2024 cocoa season.

The new price, the highest in 15 years, represents a 63.5 per cent increment of the previous one.

A bag of cocoa has thus moved from GH¢850.00 per bag to GH¢1,308.00 per bag, with the price per tonne moving from GH¢12,800.00 to GH¢20,943.00.

The new price follows a decision by the government and the COCOBOD management to ensure that cocoa farmers are reimbursed to produce more for exports to sustain the cocoa industry and to consolidate the country’s position as the leading cocoa producer worldwide.

Cocoa prices have increased from GH¢7,600 per tonne in 2016 to GH¢12,800 per tonne in 2022, representing a significant increase of 68%.

But Nana Obeng Nuakoh has noted that past governments have not shown much love and concern for farmers than President Akufo-Addo had done, by increasing the price of cocoa to alleviate their plight.

He told the paper that the pollination of cocoa trees introduced by the government has resulted in high yields of cocoa to the admiration of farmers.

The recent increases in cocoa price has, therefore, come to help cocoa farmers and advised the youth to embrace farming, instead of always relying on non- existing white collar jobs.

According to Okofrobour Obeng Nuakoh III, criticisms of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of the government about the new cocoa price are malicious and urged Ghanaians, especially cocoa farmers, to ignore what the chief described as a political propaganda and concentrate on their farming activities for more rewards.

The Dunkwa Chief is a cocoa farmer and was adjudged the 2nd National Best Farmer in 2004.  He won the District best cassava farmer and District best farmer in 2007. He was also crowned the District Aquaculture best farmer in 2012.

Okofrobour Obeng Nuakoh has a rubber plantation, fish pond, vegetable, cassava, rice, Okro and pepper farms to his credit.

Nigerian artiste, Stanley Omah Didia, popularly known as Omah Lay, has revealed that his sudden fame affected his mental health.

Speaking during the latest episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, the ‘Soso Crooner’ stated he struggled at first with fame but found his balance later.

“It was a jump; at first I struggled, and it put me in a bad mental state because I was still trying to learn my ways. However, with time, I got more comfortable and learned that I’m running my race and that I should move at my own pace.”

“There was pressure. You don’t expect to move from one crappy laptop or spending all your life in the studio to being a global superstar. It’s just like they brought you from just starting music production to this right here (points at equipment in the studio): ‘You go lost’.”

“As soon as I learned and realised that, I became much stronger and started to enjoy my life more,” the Soso hitmaker said

Omah Lay also stated he had no issues coming out to the public to talk about his vulnerabilities.

“If I can put my vulnerabilities in my song, then I can talk about them. My music is all about my real-life experiences, and I know everybody in the world is listening to it.”

Omah Lay, who is known for songs such as Soweto, Forever, Understand, Godly and Bad Influence, once opened up about being suicidal and depressed.

I am still paying late Ebony’s debts –Bullet

0
Ebony and Bullet

Manager of late Ebony Reigns, Bullet has revealed that he is still settling debts left behind by his former signee who died in a car accident.

Bullet who is officially known as Ricky Nana Agyemang in a recent interview on UTV’s United Showbiz, opened up about the contractual complications that have left him burdened with the responsibility of repaying Midas Touch Records following Ebony’s untimely demise. The original contract did not account for such an unforeseen event.

Bullet stated unequivocally, “I have not yet finished paying Midas Touch Records for the contract we signed for Ebony. As we speak now, I still owe Midas Touch Records, and I am still paying for it because the contract was supposed to run for some number of years for which they (Midas Touch) will share proceeds from works of the artistes, but we all know what happened.”

These revelations come amidst allegations of occultism following a car accident involving one of Bullet’s signees, Wendy Shay. Bullet forcefully refuted these claims, stressing that during his earlier struggles, such notions were far from his mind.

He declared, “It would be wrong for anyone to say that I am into occultism because when I was suffering, I didn’t even think about that and will be stupid to do that now when God is blessing me now.” he said.

Musician Ebony Reigns has died at the age of 20 after her car reportedly collided with a bus in south western Ghana in 2018.

The Afrobeat and Dancehall performer – real name Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng – was driving to Accra following a trip to Sunyani with two friends.
