Businessman charged with defrauding by false pretences

A 53-year old businessman, Charles Cobblah, has allegedly defrauded one Suleman Tador, a Ghanaian businessman domiciled in Germany, off GH¢12,000.00, one vehicle, and a night club.

Cobblah allegedly took possession of these properties from Tador in exchange for three plots of land located at Kasoa-Ofankor.

Cobblah has been charged with defrauding by false pretences, but has pleaded not guilty. The accused was put before an Accra Circuit, presided over Her Honour Hamila Basit, yesterday.

The court has admitted him to bail in the sum of GH¢100,000.00, with three sureties, one to be justified.

The court was told by Inspector Isaac Babaye that the accused is a resident of James Town, and on August 2, 2022, Mr. Tador reported to the police that he purchased a night club under the business name Deep Sea 68 Enterprise, located at Accra James Town, from the accused in August 2019.

However, after operating the night club for a while, under the management of his brother, Justice Tador, he decided to sell it.

The prosecutor narrated to the court that the accused, who was the previous owner of the night club, expressed interest to repurchase it.

Subsequently, the accused made a representation to the complainant that he could give him three plots of land, valued at GH¢197,000.00, at Kasoa-Ofankor in exchange for the night club, valued at GH¢120,000.00.

The accused further promised the complainant that if he topped up the value of the land with his Hyundai Elantra, valued at GH¢55,000.00, and cash of GH¢12,000.00, he would released the land to him.

He said the complainant relied on the alleged misrepresentation of the accused and parted with his night club, Hyundai Elantra and a cash sum of GH¢12,000.00.

“Upon taking possession of the above mentioned properties and money from the complainant, the accused person failed to deliver the three plots of land and went into hiding,” he stated.

On August 10, 2022, the accused person was arrested for investigations, and he admitted to the offence in his cautioned statement.

The prosecutor added that after investigations, he was charged with the offence and put before

the court.

Man, 29, allegedly swindles widow off GH¢284,484.07

Freddie Botchway, 29 and unemployed, has allegedly swindle a widow off GH¢284,484.07 to buy a television set, iPhone, laptop and Apple watch.

He has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court in the sum of GH¢300,000.00 with three sureties, one to be justified, for allegedly fraudulent breach of trust.

The court further ordered the accused to deposit his passport with the Registry and report to the police, at least, once a week.

Botchway was arraigned on the charge on Monday, April 3, 2023, but pleaded not guilty.

The substance of the case, as presented by the prosecuting officer, DSP Evans Kesse, was that on August 15, 2021, the complainant in the case lost her husband, one Julian Botchway.

So the complainant, together with the accused, acquired a Letter of Administration from the Adentah Circuit Court on June 24, 2022, which was served on Fidelity Bank to get access to the deceased man’s account domiciled with the bank.

A joint bank account was opened for the complainant and accused person at the Dzorwulu branch of the bank with a cash deposit of GH¢284,484.07.

He said on December 14, 2022, the complainant received a call that the joint account had been emptied by the accused.

On March 5, 2023, the accused person was arrested, and during investigations admitted the offence.

The court was told that the accused informed the police that he transferred the money into his ABSA accounts and used it to purchase a Samsung TV set value at GH¢13,000.00, am Iphone 14 Pro Max value at GH¢13,000.00, Lenovo laptop value at GH¢8,500.00 and Apple watch also valued at GH¢15,000.00.

The police retrieved the items from accused person and has kept them for evidential purpose.

ECG IT officer gets GH¢4m bail

Ali Nansii Shaibu, a Programmer at the Information Communication Technology (ICT) at the Department of the Electricity Company of Ghana Headquarters (ECG) head office, has bundled with a bail condition in sum of GH¢4, 000, 000.00 by an Accra High Court.

The bail condition follows his not guilty plea to 20 different counts of stealing, conspiracy to commit a crime, stealing, and money laundering.

Shaibu is not standing accused alone but with nine others, which two of them are also employers of ECG – Grace Gardiner (A2), Chief Supervising Cashier, and Anthony D.K. Quaye (A3), Technician at the Kasoa District Office of the ECG.

The others are Ibrahim Baba Adamu, Muntari Adamu Alfred Brown Gariba Awudu Misbaw, Kwasi Appiah Donkor, Eric Yaw Kyei, and Augustina Laniyan.

They are alleged to have stolen proceeds of the state owned enterprise to the tune of GH¢2,143,270.12.

The amount was allegedly stolen between August 18, 2016 and March 1, 2018, and discovered by the ECG through an investigation.

The nine others have also been granted bail in a sum of GH¢300.00 each with one surety to be justified.

The accused persons were arraigned on the charged before an Accra Criminal Court, presided over Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, on Thursday, March 30.

The particulars of the case, as read to the court by the prosecutor, Principal State Attorney (PSA) Dominic W. Bakoma, are that the complainant is a District Manager of the ECG in the Volta Region.

According to the prosecutor, Ali Nani Shaibu was in charge of Monitoring and Over-seeing the operations of the e-cash prepaid metering system, as well as the office intermediary with the Ghana Electrometer Company, with the responsibility of resolving ICT-related challenges in the power distribution system in the country.

He said, Ibrahim Baba Adumu was a Technician at Electrometer Company Limited, while the others were all private vendors who sold J-CG pre-paid power credit to the public.

According to him, in 2003, the ECG entered into a partnership agreement with various companies, including Electrometer, to provide pre-paid power distribution to customers across the country, and the private dealers were to sell credits as well.

Therefore, Ali Nansii Shaibu travelled to Hohoe in 2016 to resolve a pre-paid connectivity challenge for Gariba Awudu Misbaw.

The two agreed that the software would be manipulated to enable pre-paid credits to be sent to Gariba without the knowledge of the Hohoe District Office of the ECG.

Gariba would then delete the transaction and share the proceeds among themselves.

Mr. Shaibu equally entered into the same deal with the other accused persons, resulting in the theft of GH¢1,203,249.26 worth of credits.

Another set of transactions with other accused persons resulted in various amounts being stolen.

The prosecution said investigations put the total value of stolen credits under this scheme at GH¢2,143,270.15.

The accused person were alleged to have admitted to the offence and refunded an amount of GH¢282,600.

The next hearing is scheduled for April 27, 2023.

Editorial: Recent video of police, alleged gang attack disturbing

Ghanaians were stunned by a video which went viral making rounds on social media in which one can see some policemen, with one virtually on his knees, begging about six civilians for forgiveness.

Later information gathered from a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service, dated April 2, 2023, indicated that the incident took place at Axim, in the Western part of the country. The statement further added that the barbaric scene witnessed was rather an alleged attack on a police patrol team by a gang of illegal miners (Galamseyers) in the area.

In the statement signed by ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, the gang overpowered the police team and seized the magazine of a rifle, together with some mobile phones.

Apparently, the incident happened on March 9, this year, and has taken the police some three weeks to arrest four members of the alleged gang, namely – Kojo Siah, Emmanuel Mensah, Kofi Asamoah, Maxwell Cudjoe and Agyabu Haruna Dissawu.

Kwame Ato Asare Ani, the prime suspect, currently on the run, had his residence searched and three pump action shotguns, one pump action shotgun, machetes and eight BB refilled cartridges retrieved from his unregistered Honda CRV vehicle.

Other items retrieved from the suspect include; two live refilled BB cartridges and one unregistered motorbike.

The statement makes it more interesting to read, particularly with the police telling us that there was an allegation of extortion against the officers. Therefore, the matter had been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation. We say kudos to the police.

Although the police have stated that they were searching for the prime suspect, a man who allegedly claimed to be the prime suspect was granted an interview on a social media platform on the same day the statement was issued, throwing light on the incident.

Two things that hit The Chronicle are, he is a police informant and from the video it cannot be disputed that he is a stranger to the officers, whose images were captured, and also performs difficult tasks for the police.

He made several allegations, including linking the incident of his near arrest to dishonesty on his part to release about GH¢100,000 to some police officers in the area. He claimed receiving the amount from some illegal miners (galamaseyers) to be delivered to the officers in question. According to him, he always does such clandestine business with the police officers, but sometimes they cheat him.

If the allegation is anything to go by, then the fight against galamsey is meaningless and a waste of public resources. It is also useless if the love for money has taken precedence over the consciousness of some of our men and women in uniform, at the expense of ensuring peace and security, protecting lives and properties and law enforcement. No wonder our river bodies still remain polluted and the forests continue to be degraded.

We want to appeal to the Police Service to seriously do a retrospection and purge itself from many of these allegations, especially in the face of growing insecurity in our sub-region.

Bawumia shown love by Methodist Church

A citation was presented to him

It was all joy and palpable excitement when Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was been ushered into the church hall of the Methodist Church in Obuasi as the Special Guest of Honour on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Obuasi Diocese.

The congregants sang, danced and waved handkerchiefs in ecstatic joyfulness as the Vice President and his entourage entered the church. He was carefully and courteous ushered to his seat even as the cheers and melodious singing continued.

The Vice President, a former Member of the Church’s Boys Brigade could not help but smile and acknowledge the cheers and hearty welcome he got.

When it got to his turn to speak, he lauded the role of the Church not only in the building of the spiritual and religious life of Ghanaians but its invaluable contributions in health, education, economic and social development of the country.

He underscored the importance of anniversary celebrations as avenue to allow for stock taking and adoption of strategies to achieve set goals. He them urged the church to work even harder to resources for soul winning purposes and discipleship.

“Anniversary celebrations such as this are very important for many reasons. It is during such occasions that stocks are taken so that the positive interventions and gains are consolidated. Usually, measures are put in place to scale up the gains in the coming years. On occasions like this also, we reflect, recognize and salute our Forebears for their toils and selfless sacrifices. Let us pay glowing homage to them.

Mr. Chairman, the Methodist Church Ghana as we have known over the years is conscious of going all out to win souls for Christ. The hierarchy of the Church is bent on discipleship with the view of intensifying the teachings of the beliefs of the Church. Scriptural holiness is the measuring rod for every Methodist to gain firmer grounds to stand the pleasures of this earth.

With this in focus, the Church must rise up to the task to marshal resources available ‘’to equip members to illustrate to the world through the demonstration of Christian faith and love’’ to make the vision of the Church a reality. After teaching everyone to live like Jesus Christ, it is very necessary for us to live the talk. This is very much in sync with the theme for the anniversary “Discipleship: Living the Transformed Life in Jesus Christ.’’ (Rom. 12:1-2),” he noted.

“US of A, please, LGBTQ is the least of our problems, don’t make it the worst of our headaches!”

In explaining, Union Government to a group of students, in the 70’s in Pope John Secondary School, Koforidua, Mr Jude Adu-Amankwa, asked: “Someone comes to you with a bowl that is covered. He tells you, “In this bowl there is meat, but it is not pork.” Will you accept it?

This is exactly the situation going on right now in Black Africa as President Joe Biden of the United States is keen on implementing his policy of making all of Black Africa pro-LGBTQ+.

American reporters are all over the place moving around with high US dignitaries and posing questions about LGBTQ+ to African leaders. That happened here when one threw posed the question during President Akufo-Addo and US Vice President Harris’s press soiree.

Black Africans should insist that the bowl being offered us must be opened and all its contents examined

At the moment LGBTQ+ is the least of our problems. We have in stock rich natural resources yet we are poor people and poor nations. If only the developed nations will pay us value for money for our products,we will be fine.

We need good food, good accommodation, good jobs where we shall have regular earnings. We need good health and medical facilities; we want to be resourceful enough to have our children get good, free or affordable education. We need to have good roads, good utility services. We need to have good industries and be able to produce good food at very minimal cost of production.

Our problems include how we can survive to see the next day. How we can live in peace without attacks from rebels, terrorists, robbers and other miscreants. How we can drastically reduce pest that increasingly transmit various diseases that affect us give us health challenges. And how we can also be accepted as humans and regarded as such among other racial groups. These are among our serious problems which affects us daily.

How can LGBTQ+ transform our lives and make us respected among all racial groups?

So, this LGBTQ+ thing is the least of our problems. In our current state we do not want to worsen our relationship with our Maker, so we devoutly obey His laws and one of them is not to doLGBTQ+. But this is what the US and some Western nations are pushing down our throats, by dangling juicy baits in our eyes, just to lure us into this grievous sin.

Now, let us shelf the disobedience to God for a moment and look at what it is all about LGBTQ+.

To begin there is a huge health bills that we will face should this unnatural sex acts take root; bills could be used properly to improve our lives.

Taking transgender as one example, at least $100,000.00 is used to change someone’s natural sex to that of the opposite one.

In the US, about 1.4% of adults are transgender and working that against our population of 33 million, then we are talking about 462,000 Ghanaians who could be transgender if we accept LGBTQ+. This works out to be $46.2 billion going down the drain. Yes, $46.2 billion, and we are, praying that the IMF grants us $3 billion so that we survive.

USA, please know that, LGBTQ+ is the least of our worries, so don’t make it the worse of our headaches. Aside from this magnitude of wastage, additional health risk resulting in LGBTQ+ will have to be attended to. Soa lot of money will be wasted on this unnatural sex orientation and we will become poorer and poorer.

Other problems will be the acts of paedophilia, which is now accepted in some advanced countries,where children are being taught everything about sex.

And then comes incest which is now been de-criminalised. So, let us be honest and answer this question. Who will marry a lady who slept around with her brothers and her father or a man who slept around with his mother and sisters? Is it not possible that such adults will sleep with their own children later in life?

And there is bestiality where human freely have sex with animals and even marrying some. Please USA, Black Africa cannot stomach this.

Now what about the ugly side of LGBTQ+ and hereare the most disgusting three sexual acts. There is this thing called gagged sex where women are made to do full blow job, which makes them throw up. They are then are made to lick it up and swallow the vomit.And now the worse of the three is the sex acts where people poo on themselves,and here unfortunately as hard as I try, my key board would not form the words to describe what goes on here.

Yes, USA, you are aware that these happen and they form part of LGBTQ+, so why keep them from us? Why not give a full lecture on all about LGBTQ+?

We will be poorer than we are today, through LGBTQ+ and be completely dehumanised with all its acts including the latest disgusting acts of sex.

Be honest and tell us everything about LGBTQ+ and you will see from our faces, that LGBTQ+which is the least of our problems now, will certainly be the worse of our headaches. Thank you.

Portable granted bail, remanded till conditions are met

Singer Habeeb Okikiola aka Portable has been granted bail by a magistrate court in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. This followed the singer’s arraignment on Monday by the Ogun State Police Command.

He was arraigned on five counts bordering on assault before the court presided over by the chief magistrate, A.S Shoneye.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Delivering his ruling on application for bail made by the singer’s counsel, the presiding judge said the offences are bailable and granted him bail with bail bond of N300,000 and N500,000 as well two sureties who must reside within the jurisdiction of the honorable court.

The court, however, ruled that the defendant be transferred to the Ilaro correctional centre pending the time his bail requirements are met.

The case has been adjourned to April 26 for the commencement of trial.

On Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi said portable was arrested for resisting arrest and injuring a policeman.

“There are many pending cases of assaults on people and attacks, and he will be investigated because people have complained against him.

“So, there is no sentiment in law, let him appear in court, and allow the judge to listen to the charges against him. He has no constitutional immunity anyway,” he said.

Nigerians buy one million air conditioners yearly  –UN

United Nations Environment Programme representative Brian Holu disclosed that over one million air conditioners were sold annually in Nigeria, adding that this was eating deep into the finances of Nigerians concerning energy bills.

In reaction to the report, the federal government has warned that relevant agencies must refrain from allowing the country to be a dumping ground for sub-standard air conditioners and refrigerators with an energy efficiency ratio below internationally acceptable performance.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Adeleke Mamora, disclosed this on Thursday at the National Stakeholders’ Consultative Workshop on Energy Efficient and Climate-Friendly Cooling in Nigeria held in Abuja.

Mamora was responding to the United Nations Environment Programme representative Brian Holuj’s announcement; he said Nigeria’s economic size and global warming have made it a viable destination for cooling devices such as air conditioners and refrigerators.

The Minister urged relevant agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service and Standard Organization of Nigeria to be alive to their responsibilities to avoid the economic calamity of the country becoming a dump site.

“The customs, Standard Organisation of Nigeria, and other relevant agencies need to be alive to their responsibilities and ensure that Nigeria does not become a dumping ground, where you just bring in all sorts of products that are not in line with what we expect by way of standards,” the Minister stated.

INEC fraudulently allocated votes to Tinubu –Kwankwaso

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has alleged that fraud committed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, led to the victory of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

Kwankwaso alleged that INEC fraudulently allocated votes to Tinubu during the just-concluded presidential election.

In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Kwankwaso pointed out that Nigerians no longer liked the All Progressives Congress, APC.

He noted that the NNPP has a bright future because “big politicians” are interested in the party.

According to Kwankwaso: “Another interesting thing is that more people, particularly big politicians, are seriously indicating interest in our party, and they are willing to make necessary contributions to move the party forward. Take a look at our rivals, particularly the PDP.

“They are in a serious crisis, particularly as it concerns its leaders. In Kano State, some thought PDP will be of help to them, or game changer, but they were disappointed woefully. Same with the APC.

“All these votes you see INEC mentioned were fraudulently allocated to its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu. The truth is that Nigerians don’t like APC anymore, hence our party is the one that has the future.”

Tinubu to decide subsidy removal date after inauguration

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has said the incoming administration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu will decide the date the fuel subsidy will be removed.

Though the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) said the subsidy policy would end by June when the budget for the initiative would lapse, the Chief Spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress PCC, Festus Keyamo, on Sunday, noted that the next government would determine the terminal date for the subsidy regime.

There has been apprehension over the planned removal of subsidy with marketers and other petroleum stakeholders projecting that the development may push fuel prices to N750 per litre.

Despite the anxiety over the issue, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria last week called for subsidy removal.

PENGASSAN’s President, Festus Osifo, who said this at the National Executive Council meeting of the association in Abuja, implored the government to ensure the speedy rehabilitation of Nigeria’s refineries, stressing that this would help ease the hardship that could arise from the halt of fuel subsidy.

But the Nigeria Labour Congress has vowed to resist the plan, insisting that the refineries must be functional before the subsidy can be tampered with.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited recently said the country was spending over N400bn monthly on petroleum subsidy which it argued is largely unsustainable.

Speaking with our correspondent, Keyamo stated that he had no doubt that the Tinubu presidency would terminate subsidy payments in line with the plan of the Buhari regime.

He, however, cautioned that since government and not all policy, was a continuum, the former Lagos governor should be left alone to decide on the date of his choice to execute it.
