Minors entitled to 60% of fathers’ SSNIT contributions -SSNIT

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says minors are entitled to 60 per cent of a biological father’s SSNIT contribution upon his demise.

The Trust said the minor, regardless of whether he/she was born out of wedlock or legal marriage, was entitled to 60 per cent.

This is to ensure that the child’s welfare in terms of feeding, medical bills, education and other necessities of life are catered for.

Madam Cynthia Narh, Member of Communication Team, SSNIT, told contributors at the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interactive session on the benefits of the scheme.

“Once everything proves that the child is the biological child of the deceased, whether that child came out of wedlock or not, 60 per cent of your contribution will be given to that child.

“This is because that child needs to be taken care of, needs education, needs shelter, needs medical attention…,” Madam Narh said at the GNA’s premises.

She explained that if the minors were two or more from a legal marriage or illegal relationship, 60 per cent contribution would be shared among them equally.

“So, if you have a minor with a side-chick and a minor with a legal wife, the two minors are going to enjoy the 60 per cent benefit,” Madam Narh said.

She, therefore, advised men to be abreast of that provision in the law.

She also advised women, especially legally married ones, to desist from fighting with staff of the Trust concerning the sharing of 60 per cent benefit to all children equally.

Madam Narh said the Trust remained the surest way of helping people enjoy life while on retirement, bed ridden or retire prematurely due to ailment and encouraged staff of the GNA and their families to contribute to the Scheme.

CSNF Urges Public to Join June 8 Cancer Survivors Walk

0
Ramatu Sumani, Organiser, Cancer Support Network Foundation

Organiser of the Cancer Support Network Foundation (CSNF), Mrs Ramatu Sumani, is calling on the public to partake in the Cancer Survivors Walk scheduled for Saturday June 8, 2024.

The walk is set to commence at 6:30am from the Accra Girls Senior High School and will end at El-Wak Sports Stadium.

Hundreds of cancer survivors are expected to join this significant event, the first in a series of programmes outlined for June, which has been designated as Cancer Awareness Month worldwide.

The walk is expected to draw a diverse crowd, including cancer survivors, their families, medical professionals and supporters from all walks of life.

Participants will don T-shirts symbolising cancer awareness, as they march through the streets of Accra.

Along the route, there will be placards and banners displaying informative messages about cancer prevention, early detection and treatment options available in Ghana.

According to Mrs Sumani, the CSNF finds it imperative to celebrate this month in Ghana, where cancer awareness activities in June are notably sparse compared to countries like the USA.

She believes that this walk would help dispel misconceptions surrounding cancer survivorship in Ghana and provide hope to patients battling the disease.

“We need to come together to support our cancer survivors and educate the public about cancer prevention and treatment,” she urged.

Mrs Sumani is hopeful that the walk will galvanise public interest and support for cancer awareness initiatives in the country. She emphasised the importance of community involvement in changing perceptions and improving the lives of those affected by cancer.

“By joining this walk, we are not just showing solidarity with cancer survivors; we are also taking a stand against the stigma and fear associated with the disease,” she stated.

She encouraged everyone to participate in the walk, stressing that together, everyone could make a significant impact in the fight against cancer.

Founded by Dr Juliet Appiah Quansah, a Ghanaian medical Oncologist based in the USA, the CSNF has been a source of hope for many.

The foundation not only raises funds to support the treatment of economically challenged cancer patients in Ghana, but also organises educational activities aimed at increasing cancer awareness.

Dr Quansah’s vision was to bridge the gap in cancer care and education in Ghana, a mission that the foundation has passionately pursued since its inception.

Model sues organisers of Cannes Film Festival over red carpet ‘assault’

Ukrainian model Sawa Pontyjska

A Ukrainian model says she has filed a legal complaint against organisers of the Cannes Film Festival after she was allegedly manhandled by a security guard on the red carpet. Sawa Pontyjska was one of several guests who were filmed being challenged by the same steward at the prestigious French event.

Singer Kelly Rowland also complained, while footage of the guard with South Korean actress Yoona and Dominican actress Massiel Taveras also went viral.

Pontyjska, a presenter for FashionTV, told BBC News she was “brutally” restrained as she tried to enter the cinema with a legitimate ticket for the premiere of Marcello Mio.

On Wednesday, she posted pictures of documents accusing the festival of “physical assault and psychological damage”. She said her reputation had also been harmed and is seeking 100,000 euros (£85,000) in damages.

Festival organisers have not responded to requests for comment.

A video of the incident, which happened on 21 May, has been viewed more than 16 million times on TikTok.

It shows Pontyjska at the top of the steps to the Palais des Festivals apparently being ushered in by the female guard, who then puts both arms around her.

The pair briefly struggled and Pontyjska almost dropped to the ground, before she tried to go back down the steps and was stopped by more security personnel and taken inside.

Pontyjska told BBC News she had been put in a “bear hug” and felt scared. “I was trying to escape from this lock. I went down and I started to run away on the stairs because it was the way back [out],” she said.

“She was trying to push me in[side], so nobody can see what she’s doing with me. Then she kicked me out through the back door.”

Pontyjska said she was not doing anything wrong, and had since tried to contact the organisers to request an apology but had not received a response.

Her legal complaint said she was “violently challenged by one of a group of security guards” in front of “thousands of people”.

The use of physical force caused “acute pain”, and she also suffered “psychological trauma”, she wrote.

The unnamed guard made headlines during the two-week festival, including for a heated exchange when she tried to usher Rowland up the stairs at the same premiere.

The former Destiny’s Child singer later told the Associated Press: “The woman knows what happened. I know what happened. I have a boundary, and I stand by those boundaries and that is it.”

She continued: “There were other women that attended that carpet who did not quite look like me and they didn’t get scolded or pushed or told to get off. I stood my ground, and she felt like she had to stand hers.”

Taveras appeared to push the guard after repeatedly being hurried up the red carpet, while the same security worker was accused by Yoona’s fans of being overbearing as she ushered the South Korean star inside.

Cannes is known for having strict rules for guests on the red carpet.

Lightning strike in Czech Republic injures 18 people

Dozens of emergency personnel were deployed to the scene in the Liberec region

Eighteen people were injured in the Czech Republic after a tree they were sheltering under was struck by lightning, local emergency services said. The strike happened on Sunday afternoon in the Liberec-Vratislavice castle park, located in the northern Liberec region about 55 miles (90km) north-east of the capital Prague.

Photos and videos shared by the fire service show dozens of emergency personnel and vehicles at the scene. Officials have not provided details of those who were injured, but local media reported that children were among those taken to hospital and that the park was hosting an event to mark International Children’s Day.

Czech TV station CT 24 reported that five of the injured were children aged between two and 16, and that five adults were resuscitated at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Liberec regional hospital, Vaclav Ricar, told local newspaper Liberecky Denik that it had received 17 patients who were all conscious.

He also confirmed that one child was airlifted to a hospital in Prague.

The Czech Republic was hit by heavy rain and storms over the weekend, and there were also reports of flooding affecting parts of the country.

Many factors contribute to flooding, but a warming atmosphere caused by climate change makes extreme rainfall more likely.

The world has already warmed by about 1.1C since the industrial era began and temperatures will keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to emissions.

If you are caught outside in a thunderstorm, experts advise you to find a low spot away from trees, fences, and poles.

Heat kills more than 50 people in India in three days

76-year-old patient with heat exhaustion in Gujarat state

More than 50 people have died in India over the past three days as a brutal heat spell continues to grip parts of the country.

Around 33 people died in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh over the weekend due to the heat.

These included people involved in the general election, including polling officials, security guards and sanitation staff – Saturday was the last phase of voting.

In Odisha (Orissa) state, about 20 people died due to heat stroke, officials said.

Every five years, India holds its general election in the summer months of April and May.

But this year, the temperatures have been record-breaking, with the country experiencing frequent, more intense and longer heatwaves.

The federal health ministry says that there have been at least 56 confirmed heat strokes deaths from 1 March to 30 May. About 24,849 heatstroke cases were reported during the period.

However, state-wise figures suggest the actual number could be much higher.

In Odisha, district authorities reported 99 suspected heat stroke deaths in the past 72 hours – of these, 20 cases have been confirmed, the state’s Special Relief Commissioner said in a statement.

In Uttar Pradesh, Navdeep Rinwa, chief electoral officer of the state, told reporters that the families of deceased election personnel would be given a monetary compensation of 1.5m rupees ($18,000; £14,000).

Mr Rinwa said that a man who was standing in the queue to vote fainted because of the heat.

Suspected heat-related deaths have also been reported from the states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.

The heat in northern and central India and parts of the west has been unrelenting for the past two weeks, with maximum temperatures hovering around 45-46C for days at a stretch and even climbing up to 50C in some areas.

China accuse UK intelligence agency of recruiting Chinese couple as spies

China accuse UK

China has accused the UK’s intelligence agency of recruiting a couple as spies – the latest in a string of tit-for-tat allegations between Beijing and the West in recent months.

According to the Ministry of State Security, the two Chinese government employees were successfully recruited after MI6 operatives exploited the man’s “strong desire for money”.

The man, named as Wang, then convinced his partner, named only as Zhou, to join him as a British spy, the ministry said.

The accusations come weeks after the UK charged two men with spying for China.

The men were accused of giving “articles, notes, documents or information” to a foreign state, while China has called the allegations “malicious slander”.

Earlier this month, a former Royal Marine charged with assisting the Hong Kong intelligence service was found dead in the UK, police there said.

China did not reveal how it uncovered the case involving Mr Wang and Ms Zhou, saying only that it came after a “thorough investigation”.

The case is still under investigation and Chinese officials did not say if the couple would be charged.

The BBC sought a response from the UK government, which said it would neither confirm nor deny claims relating to intelligence matters.

China’s Ministry of State Security alleged that MI6 started cultivating Mr Wang when he was studying in the UK under a Sino-British exchange programme in 2015.

The operatives took “special care” of him in the UK, such as inviting him to dinners and tours to better “understand his interests and weaknesses”, the ministry alleged.

Mexico elects Claudia Sheinbaum as first woman president

0
Claudia Sheinbaum will be Mexico's first ever female president

Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as Mexico’s first woman president in an historic landslide win.

Mexico’s official electoral authority said preliminary results showed the 61-year-old former mayor of Mexico City winning between 58% and 60% of the vote in Sunday’s election.

That gives her a lead of about 30 percentage points over her main rival, businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez.

Ms Sheinbaum will replace her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on 1 October. Ms Sheinbaum, a former energy scientist, has promised continuity, saying that she will continue to build on the “advances” made by Mr López Obrador, further building on the welfare programmes which have made the outgoing president very popular.

But in her victory speech she also highlighted what has set this Mexican election apart from previous ones. She told cheering voters: “For the first time in the 200 years of the [Mexican] Republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico.”

She said it was an achievement not just for her but for all women.

Ms Sheinbaum also thanked her rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, who has conceded victory.

Prior to running for president, Ms Sheinbaum was mayor of Mexico City, one of the most influential political positions in the country and one that is seen as paving the way for the presidency.

Ms Sheinbaum, whose Jewish maternal grandparents immigrated to Mexico from Bulgaria fleeing the Nazis, had an illustrious career as a scientist before delving into politics. Her paternal grandparents hailed from Lithuania.

Cycling after 50yrs

Exercise is an important part of healthy aging. It helps keep your heart, lungs, and brain healthy and your muscles strong. Many older people turn to cycling as a healthy, stimulating activity.

Benefits of Cycling After 50

Cycling is a great endurance exercise called aerobic exercise. It increases your heart rate and improves your breathing. This helps keep you healthy and gives you better staying power so that you can do the things you need to do every day. Endurance exercise like cycling can help prevent:

Exercise is also important for treating arthritis. Extra weight can cause pain because it adds stress on the joints. Exercise helps you keep a healthy weight, which can help your joints feel better. The muscles around the joint can also get weak if you don’t exercise. This means they won’t be able to absorb shock from moving and can make your joints hurt more.

Regular exercise can also help your mood and your memory. This is because it can increase blood flow in your brain.

Studies also show that cycling outside can also improve your mood and give you a sense of well-being. The combination of exercise and the outdoor environment has positive effects on your health.

Negatives of Cycling After 50

Exercise rarely has drawbacks because it’s important for keeping good health. But there might be times when cycling has some unwanted side effects. These can happen when you first start cycling and are building up your strength when you forget to warm up, or if you have an injury. These side effects can include:

  • Soreness
  • Muscle tightness
  • Tiredness
  • Feeling out of breath

It can feel like cycling is too hard when you first start, but as you keep going it will get easier and feel better.

Cycling while being outside can help you feel better, but you’re also at the mercy of the weather. Older people and people who have other health problems are more likely to get sick in the heat.

Cold weather can also make it hard to cycle. The snow and ice can be too slippery for cycling, which might cause you to fall.

How to Start Cycling

Cycling is a great way to get exercise after age 50. If you want to start cycling, there are some things to think about.

Find the right bike for you. You will need a bike that fits you. You should be able to sit on the seat and comfortably reach the handlebars and pedals. You should adjust the seat so that it is at hip height while standing.

If you are buying a used bike, make sure the brakes work and all of the parts of the frame are together.

Get a helmet that fits. Helmets are an important part of cycling safety. Try on some helmets to find the right fit for you. It should sit level on your head and be snug. The snap should be tight enough to fit two fingers between your chin and the strap. The buckle should be centered under your chin.

Find the right riding gear. It’s a good idea to find the right light exercise clothes for summer so you don’t overheat and warm enough clothing for cooler weather. Make sure your gear is reflective. You will need a light for the front of your bike and some reflectors so cars can see you. Wearing a backpack to hold your water and belongings will keep your hands free.

Get familiar with road rules. Ride on the road instead of sidewalks and in the same direction as cars. Learn about how to signal to turn. It’s a good idea to practice riding on a path or at a park before you head out onto the road.

Safety Concerns of Cycling After 50

When you’re ready to start cycling, aim for 150 minutes a week for exercise. To keep safe, make sure to:

  • Warm up and cool down with stretches
  • Drink lots of water
  • Pay attention to the cars and people around you
  • Don’t listen to music while you cycle
  • Dress in layers
  • Listen to your body
  • Plan your route
  • Keep your belongings in a backpack on your back
  • Tie your shoelaces
  • Tuck your pants in so they don’t get caught in the chain
  • Ride during the day
  • Practice riding in a park or on a path before going on the road
  • Don’t drink alcohol and ride your bike

It’s important to listen to your body as you exercise. Cycling should not make you feel any of the following symptoms:

If you have these symptoms while you cycle, make sure you talk to your doctor.

Cycling can be an excellent exercise to keep you healthy as you get older. Call 911 for any chest pain or pressure. If you have any concerns, make sure to check with your doctor before you start.
