Caire declined to comment further while an investigation is ongoing.

In a statement, Tottenham said: “We are aware of the incident that took place and we will continue to check on the welfare of Yves and his family.”

Medvedev becomes highest seed to fall at French Open

Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev became the highest seed to fall in the French Open singles after losing to Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the men’s fourth round.

Russian fifth seed Medvedev, 28, was beaten 4-6 6-2 6-1 6-3 at Roland Garros.

Medvedev needed treatment for blisters on his feet in the second set and lost nine of the next 10 games when he returned from a medical timeout.

The former world number one, who has never gone past the French Open quarter-finals, improved in the fourth set after going off court again.

But a poor backhand into the net handed over a break point at 3-3, which De Minaur took spectacularly with an inside-out forehand winner that kissed the line.

De Minaur used his speed around the court superbly to keep points alive throughout and drew mistakes out his frustrated opponent.

With Medvedev chuntering to his team, De Minaur stayed composed to hold to love and move a game away from victory.

Medvedev mis-hit a forehand long behind the baseline at 30-30 5-3 and a double fault from the 2021 US Open champion on match point was a sorry way to finish.

De Minaur is the first Australian man to reach the Roland Garros quarter-finals since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.

Having never previously gone beyond the second round in Paris, De Minaur screamed “I love the clay! I love it here!” as he celebrated.

Djokovic comes through another French Open epic

Novak Djokovic

Defending champion Novak Djokovic showed his supreme powers of recovery once again to come through a five-set marathon against Francisco Cerundolo and reach the French Open quarter-finals.

Serbia’s Djokovic, 37, looked hampered by injury before winning 6-1 5-7 3-6 7-5 6-3 against Argentine 23rd seed Cerundolo.

For the second time in three days, the 24-time major champion fought back from a two-sets-to-one deficit.

The fourth-round match with Cerundolo started about 4pm local time on Monday, little over 36 hours after his previous contest against Lorenzo Musetti finished at 3:07am on Sunday morning.

But Djokovic still had the mental and physical resilience to win another gruelling encounter lasting four hours and 39 minutes.

The top seed broke out into a beaming smile when he sealed victory, pointing to his chest and then to the court in celebration.

“Three or four times I was points away from losing this match and thank you to my opponent,” said Djokovic.

“He deserves so much applause that’s for sure. I’m not sure how I won this match.”

It was Djokovic’s 370th victory at a Grand Slam tournament, putting him clear of his great rival Roger Federer.

Djokovic will face the winner of Norwegian seventh seed Casper Ruud, who the Serb beat in last year’s final, and American 12th seed Taylor Fritz in the last eight.

Prosper Ogum advises home-based players on what to do to get Black Stars call-up

Asante Kotoko coach, Prosper Ogum

Asante Kotoko coach, Prosper Ogum insists players plying their trade in the Ghana Premier League will have to work harder to merit an invite to the national team.

Only one player from the domestic league earned a call-up for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic. Goalkeeper Fredrick Asare is expected to rejoin the team on Monday before Tuesday’s trip to Bamako.

Meanwhile, at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast earlier there year, Fatawu Hamidu and Richmond Lamptey were the only players from the Ghana Premier League to travel with the Black Stars to the tournament. Both players could not make an appearance at the competition.

According to Dr Ogum, there are quality players in the league but they have to work extra hard to get into the Black Stars team.

“We have quality in the league, individual players are very good but it all depends on the coach who is making the call-ups. As coaches, we need to work harder and as players, they also need to work harder so that moving on more players will be called up to join the Black Stars,” he said after Kotoko’s game against Great Olympics.

The Porcupine Warriors suffered a 1-0 defeat at the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex on matchday 32.

We’ve to know how to handle senior players in Black Stars -Stephen Appiah

Stephen Appiah

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah says he was fortunate to be part of the squad that went to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Appiah had been struggling with injuries before the tournament but made the squad, making three appearances as the Black Stars reached the quarter-finals.

“In 2010, I was lucky to be part of the team. If Agyemang-Badu was okay, maybe I wouldn’t have been part of the 2010 World Cup, which would have been difficult,” Appiah said to 3Sports.

Appiah’s comments highlighted his thoughts on the recent Black Stars call-up, which saw the exclusion of captain Andre Ayew.

The former Fenerbahce star isn’t entirely happy with Ayew’s exclusion, believing he could have been part of the squad even if he wouldn’t play a big role in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

He believes his presence had a positive effect on the team in South Africa despite not playing much, and that could have been the same for Ayew.

“You can have senior players in the team and if you let them understand that this time there are certain good players in the team but be around, you may get either 20 or 10 minutes which depends on how you train,” he explained.

Appiah noted that the presence of senior players often helps maintain discipline and focus within the team.

“When some of the players see senior players in camp, they won’t even think of misbehaving. So, we have to know how to handle senior players in the national team.”

Ghana will play Mali on June 6 and, four days later, take on the Central African Republic in Kumasi.

Having started the qualifiers with three points from two games, the upcoming matches are crucial to their hopes of making it to the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Brian Brobbey and Jeremie Frimpong

Ghanaian duo Brian Brobbey and Jeremie Frimpong have been included in the final Holland squad for the 2024 European championship in Germany.

Both players, who remain eligible to represent the Black Stars due to the changes in the FIFA nationality switch rules, could permanently seal their fate with the Oranges at the tournament which begins later this month.

Ajax’s Brobbey is yet to add to his one senior appearance for the Netherlands while Frimpong, who was a member of the team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, is yet to play his third senior match for the Dutch.

Brobbey and Frimpong reported to camp last weekend following the end of their European season with their various clubs. The Ajax striker enjoyed an outstanding campaign in the Eredivisie after scoring 18 league goals in 30 matches.

Meanwhile, Frimpong won a historic double with Bayer Leverkusen, starring in their unbeaten run in the Bundesliga in the just-ended season.

Should both players fail to make an appearance for the Netherlands at the 2024 Euros, they would be available to play for the Black Stars of Ghana.

Chelsea appoint Leicester’s Enzo Maresca as new manager

Enzo Maresca

Chelsea have appointed Leicester manager Enzo Maresca as their new boss on a five-year contract with the option of an extra year.

The Italian replaces Mauricio Pochettino, who left by mutual consent on 21 May after just one season at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca, 44, took charge of the Foxes in June 2023 and led them to the Championship title last term.

“To join Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, is a dream for any coach,” he said. “It is why I am so excited by this opportunity.

“I look forward to working with a very talented group of players and staff to develop a team that continues the club’s tradition of success and makes our fans proud.”

Maresca, who will begin his new role on 1 July, is Chelsea’s sixth managerial appointment in five years and the fourth since American investor Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital bought the club in May 2022.

Chelsea endured a mixed 2023-24 but won their final five games to end the campaign in sixth and qualify for the Europa Conference League.

The Blues also finished runners-up in the Carabao Cup and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Several candidates were on a shortlist following Pochettino’s departure, including former Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna and Brentford’s Thomas Frank.

Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart said Maresca “deeply impressed us in our discussions leading up to his appointment” and his “ambitions and work ethic align with those of the club”.

The Chelsea players not on international duty this summer are scheduled to return to the club for pre-season under Maresca on 4 July as they prepare for a tour of the United States.

Maresca’s coaching staff at Leicester, including former Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero, will work alongside him at Stamford Bridge.

Religious Tolerance Is Ghana’s Trump Card … Bawumia tells the clergy in Ho

0
Veep Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has told the clergy in the Volta regional capital, Ho, during his one day campaign tour of the region that one of the greatest achievements of Ghana is her religious tolerance.

The policy, he noted, has not only driven the development of the country, but has also ensured peace, making Ghana one of the most peaceful countries not only in West Africa, but Africa as a whole.

Dr Bawumia, therefore, asked the clergy to at all times pray for peace and stability of the countryparticularly for him to succeed as the next President of Ghana. He commended the faith based organisations for the tremendous role they have played in ensuring that there is peace in the country.

He noted that without peace, these faith based organisations wouldn’t have been able to provide educational infrastructure, health facilities and agriculture to complement what the government was doing.

Dr Bawumia, who is also the Vice President, reiterated his promise to grant tax rebate to religious groups on projects they execute, just as external development partners are currently enjoying.

The basis for this planned support, he explained, was that the local development partners would never ceased to exist but those coming from outside the borders of the country would one day leave the country.

Dr Bawumia’s campaign chairman, Mr Dan Botwe,on his part said the presidential candidate of the NPP and the party believe that the success of every human effort has its foundation in God, hence the involvement of the clergy in the campaign.

He said it was unfortunate that whenever people heard of politics, they associate it with lies, which in his view was not true.

According to him, some politicians sometimes engaged in propaganda and appealed to the clergy to educate the people on the truth.

The Volta Regional Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev Seth Mawutor, commended government for its development programmes and policies and hoped that the desire of Dr Bawumia becoming the president of Ghana would become a reality.

The NPP Presidential Candidate also addressed the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in Ho and the youth from the 18 municipal and districts in the Volta region.

Earlier on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 Alhaji Dr.Mahamudu Bawumia met with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and emphasised his commitment to collaborating with the private sector to curb government borrowing and enforce fiscal discipline.

This was part of his ongoing “Bold Solutions for the Future” initiative, where he has been meeting with various identifiable groups to discuss his policy proposals.

During the meeting, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his intention to streamline the government by limiting the number of ministers to not more than 50, a promise that extends to the leadership of state-owned enterprises.

This, he believes, will promote efficiency and reduce unnecessary governmental expenditure. He also discussed offering incentives to the private sector to alleviate some financial burdens on the government, thereby curbing excessive spending.

The General Secretary of the TUC, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, expressed his admiration for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign slogan and vision, noting its positive impact on the country.

He particularly highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s assertion that “Ideas, Systems and Institutions are ingredients for transforming a country,” reinforcing the slogan, “It is Possible,” as a crucial message for national development.

Dr. Baah presented the “TUC Manifesto” to Dr. Bawumia, indicating the union’s readiness to support the outlined objectives. He advocated for a constitutional amendment to rebalance the distribution of power between the President and the populace, emphasising the need for collective action to resolve the ongoing power crisis definitively.

Dr. Baah also lauded Dr. Bawumia’s vision for digitalization as a transformative idea that could significantly benefit the country.

The outcomes of this meeting were multifaceted. Firstly, there was a mutual understanding and alignment on the need for fiscal discipline and reducing government size.

Dr. Bawumia’s proposals to involve the private sector more deeply in economic activities and to streamline government operations resonated well with the TUC leadership.

Secondly, the call for constitutional amendments to rebalance power dynamics indicated a shared commitment to more democratic governance structures.

Lastly, the emphasis on solving the power crisis and advancing digitalization showcased a forward-thinking approach to addressing critical national issues.

Afenyo-Markin blows cover of NDC Minority Group

0
Mr Afenyo Markin, Majority Leader

The Majority in Parliament has exposed the double standards of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority Group in Parliament.

At a press conference on Thursday, May 30, 2024 the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin chronicled instances where the Minority, while occupying the other side of the House in 2015, had supported tax exemption, but is now playing the ostrich.

The Majority Leader recalled that the House, at its recent sitting, could not approve the request for tax exemptions “due to the opposition of the Minority Leader and his members.”

The majority cited the tax waivers granted to Meridian Port Services (MPS) as a case study, demonstrating the double standards of their colleagues. They also released letters granting exemptions to some companies.

MPS DEBATE

He recalled that in June 2015, MPS Limited, with the support of the GPHA and the Ministry of Transport, made an application for tax waivers and concessions of US$ 982 million through the Finance Ministry to Parliament.

This amount was reduced to US$ 832 million by the intervention of the Minority and on June 7, 2016 Parliament approved the request.

The Effutu MP said the Minority at the time argued that the government had been shortchanged in the provision of the tax concession.

“I remember Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah, the former Member for New Juaben South, expressed his grievances on the floor. This was because the waiver was almost two-thirds of the actual project cost,” Afenyo-Markin said.

He said the majority disagreed with the position of the Minority, with Cassiel Ato Forson stating that they were not merely granting tax exemptions without consideration.

Ato Forson reportedly acknowledged that the tax exemption, as a percentage of revenue, was significant, but argued that countries commonly grant such exemptions.

“Hon. Ato Forson emphasised that refusing to grant tax exemptions for future investments could result in those investments relocating to other countries. He pointed out that MPS had the option to invest in Ghana, Ivory Coast or other neighbouring countries, and failure to grant the exemption could lead them to choose a different location.

“He further stressed that tax exemptions should be evaluated not only on revenue decisions, but also on their economic impact,” Afenyo-Markin recalled.

The current majority leader also recalled the argument of Fifi Fiave Kwetey, the then Minister of Transport, whose Ministry spearheaded the motion in Parliament.

Fifi Kwetey, according to Afenyo-Markin, justified the need for the tax exemptions, quoting him as saying that: “It is only a person who is not looking at the future of a country who is constantly obsessed with revenue now. So, if we are making some of these sacrifices to forsake revenue today, in order to attain a situation where our ports would be the best in the whole of the sub-region, make us competitive across the sub-region and so on, that is the way to go.’”

MAJORITY CASE

The Majority Leader asked whether the NDC, which in 2015 granted exemption, “no longer believes that tax waivers are beneficial for economic development?”

He continued that, “it seems contradictory to oppose the very measures they once advocated as crucial for attracting investment and fostering growth. Has there been a change in their perspective on the positive impact of tax incentives on our economy?”

EXEMPTIONS

A letter dated April 29, 2015 listed about nine companies for which the John Mahama administration waived taxes in respect of capital goods and equipment that were to be imported.

The companies were Messrs Ghacem Ltd., Messrs Dream Reality Ltd, Messrs Garden City Mall Ltd, Messrs Boston Investment Ltd, Messrs Shoprite Ghana Pty Ltd.

The rest were Messrs Ciment De L’Afrique Ghana Ltd, Messrs Vincien Sugar Refinery Ghana Ltd., Messrs Dzata Cement Ltd and Messrs Dream Reality Ltd.

Signed by then Secretary to the President, Kwesi Quartey, the letter was addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre.

“This is to inform you that, on the recommendations of the Ministry of Finance, His Excellency the President has approved the recognition of the under-mentioned ten companies as strategic investors,” the letter read.

On January 7, 2016 the Secretary to the President, Kwesi Quartey, said approval had been given to six companies on VAT and import duties for capital goods and equipment imported.

The companies were Wilmar Africa Limited, West Hills Mall Limited, Tang Palace Hotel Limited, Mabani Seven Company and Sunon Asogli Power Limited (Phase II).

COOPERATION

Meanwhile, the Majority Leader, Afenyo-Markin, has advocated collaboration from the minority.

He explained that the tax waivers are not just for foreign investors, but they are going to help local businesses expand and become more competitive.

“I want to take this opportunity to urge our colleagues in the Minority to engage in constructive dialogue and reach a beneficial agreement that will ensure the smooth running of Government business,” the Majority Leader appealed.
