Mr. Emmanuel Appiah, an Auto mechanic, described the intervention by the Fifty 50 Club as a great relief and recounted how difficult it has been for himself and others to get the tools to set up their businesses after completing their training or apprenticeship.

About 700 school girls in Obuasi Municipality have received sanitary pads from Big Peiro Company and No Limit Charity Foundation to help improve menstrual hygiene.

Big Peiro Company limited, a tailing construction firm, in collaboration with No Limits Charity Organisation, an NGO, donated about 2,500 pads to mark this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

According to the donors, menstrual health is a fundamental aspect of human rights, dignity and public health, for which Menstrual Hygiene Day has been instituted to help break taboos and raise awareness about the importance of good menstrual hygiene management.

Mr. Peter Armah Kpolly, Chief Executive Officer, stated that the sanitary pads are expected to bring relief to the school girls, who mostly encounter difficulties in accessing the pads during menstruation because of the cost.

The decision to join in donating the pads, he said, stems from the hardships that girls, especially those in school, go through during the periods of menstruation.

He noted that as an advocate for women empowerment, his company saw the need to collaborate with No Limit Charity Foundation to support school girls with the sanitary pads and thus improve upon attendance and avoid stigmatisation that leads to low self-confidence.

The CEO appealed to the government to consider supplying free sanitary pads in schools, adding that, once the government had demonstrated commitment to improve access to education through Free Senior High School, it can keep the girls in school by supplying the free pads to the girls.

Madam Rita Esionam Garglo, Chief Executive officer of No Limits Charity Foundation, also stressed on the challenges some school girls go through during menstruation.

According to her, access to sanitary pads, water and sharing of toilets is a major challenge for menstruating girls.

She said the reusable menstrual products, stained clothes and sanitation infrastructure is critical and commended Peiro Company limited for the collaboration saying the donation signifies the commitment of groups and individuals to see girls and women experience safe and hygienic menstruation.

She also pleaded with the government to intervene by making sanitary pads easily accessible to school girls to enhance hygienic menstruation.

Miss Judith Acquah, a student of Obuasi Senior High Technical School commended the two institutions for supporting them with sanitary pads.

He expressed their frustration over the cost of sanitary pads hampering clean and safe menstruation and urged the government for support for school girls.

Two Ghanaian seafarers missing

The Ada Divisional Police with some of the victims and other fishermen at Anyama

Two Ghanaians, whose names are yet to be known, have been missing at sea after their boat capsized around Ada.

The fishing boat, Seafearer, with ten sailors, including two Chinese nationals onboard, left Tema on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 for fishing around the We waters in the Volta Region.

Eight of the sailors, including the two Chinese, were rescued.
The names of the six rescued Ghanaians are; Michael Dogbegah, Ebenezer Armah, Ben Blebo, Joe Owusu, Kwame Akakpo and Korblah Armah. The names of the two Chinese could not be properly pronounced by any of the six Ghanaians who survived.

Michael Dogbegah, the second captain of the boat, narrating the incident to the Ada Police at Anyaman, near Sege, West Ada, said on their journey home from We, towards Tema, at about 7 pm on Thursday, they entered rough waters.

Immediately, he said one of them (Ghanaian sailors) decided to navigate the boat but their Chinese captain, who was unduly speeding, declined. Suddenly, he said they spotted a leakage from underneath the boat.

The Chinese, according to Dogbegah, kept speeding towards Tema instead of seeking safety ashore, in any of the coastal communities along the route. He said they (sailors) fetched the water out of the boat until they were overwhelmed and eventually submerged around Kablevu waters, in the West Ada District at midnight.

With the aid of wooden slabs, he said they managed to swim until neighbouring fishermen found the six of them at about 5:20 am and brought them to Goi, near Sege. The two Chinese were also rescued later and taken to Akplabanya.

The Goi Chief Fisherman, Nene Joseph Tetteh Agamah lV, who took custody of the rescued, appealed to all his colleagues chief fishermen, as well as all fishers, to help find the rest of the two Ghanaians, whose names are yet to be known.

Staff members of the Anyamam Zone of Ada West NADMO, on the directive of the District Director, quickly called to the house of the Chief Fisherman of Goi-Ada where they took a detailed account of the incident.

The Ada West District Commander of Police, Superintendent Daniel Yaro, his 2IC, John Akugah and Corporal Senyo Akli Mensah, who later visited the sailors, arranged with the Tema Regional Police Command to rush the victims to the Command for medical care in the region.
However, the two Chinese left soon after the rescue without informing the police.

Ghana’s oil production drops from 71.44m barrels in 2019 to 48.25m in 2023

Emerita Professor Elizabeth Schandorf, head of PIAC

Emerita Professor Elizabeth Schandorf, the Chairperson of Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has indicated that their findings in the 2023 annual report on the management and use of Petroleum Revenue reported a decline for the fourth consecutive year.

She said production of the commodity dropped from 71.44 million barrels in 2019 to 48.25 million barrels in 2023, representing an annual average decline of 9.2 percent.

The total proceeds from the JOHL lifting received in 2023, amounting to 70, 456.93 dollars were not paid into the Heritage Fund for the second consecutive year, while Surface Rentals, owed by International Oil Companies, remained high at 2,738,365.29 at the end of 2023.

Emerita Professor Schandorf made this known at a media engagement for journalists drawn from the Western and Central regions in Takoradi.

On allocations and utilisation of Petroleum Revenues, PIAC observed that since 2011, the annual budget funding had been guided by a medium-term plan as against a long-term national development plan.

The 2023 report said the retention of the current cap of 100 dollars on the Ghana Stabilisation Fund for the year 2023 did not follow the stipulated formula in the Legislative Instrument 2381 since a proper application should have returned a cap of 581.05 dollars instead.

The PIAC report, indicated the need for the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Petroleum Commission to intensify audit of development and production costs in the TEN and other producing fields.

Meanwhile, Media practitioners from the Western and Central Regions queried PIAC on the implementation status of recommendations made since its inception.

The journalists also wondered how the Committee still lacked the power to bite “offending” entities, individuals, and Assemblies in the management of allotted Petroleum revenues for projects.

Mrs Mildred Siabi-Mensah, a journalist with Ghana News Agency called for stronger alliance between PIAC and the state investigative bodies like Office of the Special Prosecutor, CHRAJ and Economic and Organised Crime Officeto have PIAC’s recommendations duly investigated, and actions taken.

According to her, though 62 recommendations had been projected since PIAC’s inception, only 37 had been implemented by relevant agencies.

Other journalists expressed concern about how the Committee’s mandate could be reviewed to make them more biting, the factors militating against the smooth decommissioning of the Saltpond oil fields and how the Ministry of Finance seemed to be a problem child of the state as most of the recommendations captured one infraction or another against it.

The PIAC entreated the media, which is part of the committee, to ensure it exerts its role to ensure that duty bearers were accountable to the people Ghana.

Cocoa farmers protest against wanton destruction of cocoa trees by illegal miners

MP Armah Kofi Buah rceiving the petition from the aggrieved cocoa farmers

A group of cocoa farmers in the Ellembelle District of the Western region have petitioned the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, to use his good offices to intervene and avert wanton destruction of large hectares of their cocoa farms.

The group, which calls itself “Concerned Cocoa Farmers of Ellembelle” claims farms of their members are being destroyed by illegal miners. The group in their numbers defied the Saturday downpour to take to the streets to protest against the conduct of the miners.

They stormed one of the illegal mining sites at Sendu in the District to express their displeasure over the conduct of the illegal miners. They claimed the destruction being caused to their cocoa farms and water bodies through these nefarious activities cannot be quantified.

Benjamin Azachie, leader of Concerned Cocoa Farmers, presented the petition to the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, who is also the deputy Minority Leader in the House of Parliament.

Cocoa farmers take to the streets to protest destruction of their cocoa farms by illegal miners

Leader Azachie urged the lawmaker to use his good offices to help stop the forceful takeover of cocoa farms by illegal miners (galamsey operators) in the area. He said the illegal mining activities continue to destroy their investments and clean water bodies in the affected areas of the District.

Last year, December, Legislator Armah Kofi Buah, together with journalists toured one of the communities where large tracts of cocoa farms were being destroyed to pave way for illegal mining.

The MP expressed deep concern over the destruction of the cocoa farms to pave way for the galamsey activities.

The legislator told journalists at the time that he had written to Minerals Commission (MC) to intervene to stop the miners behind the destruction of cocoa farms in the area.

Granting an interview to journalists after the demonstration, one of the affected residents, Grace Amihere, explained how the level of pollution being displayed in the area is negatively affecting her.

“I’m demonstrating because of the pollution of our water bodies and destruction of cocoa farms. How are we going to feed our children with the destruction of our farms? The operators suddenly come without prior notice to us.

“They tried to pay off my brother to mine on his cocoa farm, but because he refused to accept their money, they have destroyed half of the farm. Why are they doing this to us? This is what worries us. President Akufo-Addo must address this concern. Right now farmers are not getting water to drink,” she said.

Another affected resident, Ama Amihere, also claimed “They have destroyed rubber farms and also cheated the farmers after forcefully taking their farms. So, we are pleading with government that what is happening is not lawful.”

The once-clean River Fia has been polluted after the invasion of “galamsey” activities in the Nyamebekyere-Sendu area of Ellembelle District.

The Assembly Member of Nyamebekyere Electoral Area, Nicholas Kofi Mawuli, who is deeply worried about the negative development expressed concerns about the use of Chinese to mine in Ghana.

After over an hour of demonstrating at the Sendu galamsey site, the demonstrators (Concerned Cocoa Farmers) presented their petition to Legislator Armah-Kofi Buah. He assured the cocoa farmers of his commitment to forward the concerns raised in their petition to Parliament of Ghana for redress.

He, however, urged the affected residents not to keep quiet, but endeavor to speak loudly against illegal mining activities in the area. He said the war against the illegal mining activities in the area, remains a collective responsibility and all hands must be on deck to stem the tide.
