50 Rep members demand Nnamdi Kanu’s release

About 50 members of the House of Representatives from different parts of Nigeria and political parties, known as Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South East, have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to invoke Section 174 of the Constitution of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, from detention to aid the restoration of peace in the South East.

The lawmakers, who hail from different political parties and geopolitical zones across the nation, also appealed to President Tinubu to commence a presidential peace initiative to address all issues and challenges bedeviling the southeast region of Nigeria.

These appeals were contained in a three-page letter signed by the lawmakers, dated June 19, 2024, and addressed to the President.

They urged the President to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN, to invoke his powers of nolle prosequi under the provisions of Section 174(1) of the Constitution and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, and cause the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention and discontinue his trial. According to the lawmakers, they believe it is long overdue and would be instrumental in opening the door for much-needed conversations surrounding peace restoration and inclusivity as well as addressing the issues that led to the agitations.

They recalled that the President extended this gesture through the office of the Attorney General in the charge involving Omoyele Sowore, wherein he was charged with treasonable felony in Charge No FHC/ABJ CR/235/2019, and Sunday Igboho.

We are not slaves, pay our 3-month outstanding wage -workers tells Tinubu

0
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Federal workers, under the auspices of the Federal Workers Forum (FWF), have urged the federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to pay their outstanding three-month wage awards.

The federal workers made this declaration during an online meeting held on Saturday.

Our correspondent gathered that the federal government introduced a wage award for workers after the subsidy was removed from Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The federal workers have appealed to the government to pay the wage awards for March, April, and May. In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and made available to DAILY POST on Sunday, the federal workers emphasized that they are not slaves.

The communiqué, made available through the National Coordinator, Comrade Andrew Emelieze, stated: “It has been nearly four months since the federal government stopped the payment of wage awards to federal workers. Despite repeated pleas to the federal government (FG) to resume the payments, all efforts have fallen on deaf ears.

“The federal government workers met online to critically review our last request to the FG to pay the outstanding March, April, and May wage awards, among other things. It was generally agreed that the FG is pretending not to know that we, the federal workers, are experiencing unimaginable hardship since the removal of the fuel subsidy.

“We, therefore, resolve as follows: To embark on continuous peaceful protests and demonstrations in all federal government secretariats nationwide. These protests will become a ritual until the welfare needs of the federal workers and pensioners are addressed.

“The protests will commence on June 24th and continue until the issues of the wage award and the new national minimum wage are resolved. Every federal worker must take this protest as a duty, and anyone who opposes this continuous protest is an enemy of the workers.

“We call for the support and solidarity of all industrial unions, the NLC, and the TUC as we, the federal workers, embark on this marathon session of peaceful protests and demonstrations across the federation. We condemn the idea of retired federal workers waiting for over a year before receiving their pensions and gratuities.

“We urge federal workers to be armed with the fact that protest is a fundamental human right, and any federal worker who decides to dodge this collective agreement is a traitor. We are citizens, not slaves. Enough of this exploitation of the vulnerable. The government has cheated us enough. Pay us what you owe us. We have worked for it; we are not beggars.”

GRA justifies calculation of duty payment in dollars

0

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority has provided justification for why foreign currencies are used during the calculation of customs values, before these values are converted into the local currency, being the Ghanaian cedi, for the purposes of duty payments at the ports and borders of entry.

The Chief Revenue Officer at the Policy and Programmes Department Customs, GRA, Smile Agbemenu, who recently demonstrated the calculation of duties on the Eye on Port program, indicated that the Ghana Cedi is not used during the calculation of customs values because it is not an international trading currency.

He stated that, according to Section 69 of the customs law, since goods purchased abroad are priced in foreign currencies and invoices presented to the GRA reflect these currencies, the law mandates that the value of goods traded in foreign currency must be used, and converted into Ghana cedis at the current Bank of Ghana exchange rate for duty and tax calculations. This ensures that customs duties are accurately assessed based on the official exchange rates.

“The invoice that you are trading in is not a cedi invoice. When you are buying goods from China, most likely it will be in the US Dollar. Most of our invoices coming in, over 80% of them are actually in the United States Dollar so that is why over here I did not choose the national currency I chose the foreign currency and selected the currency code to be the United States one,” he explained.

According to Mr. Agbemenu, this duty calculator can be found on the Ghana Revenue Authority site, “gra.gov.gh”, where the various online tools, including the tax calculators to use. Users could alternatively type in “external.unipassghana.com”, a platform where external stakeholders in the cargo clearance chain are connected to customs.

While you may need the assistance of a customs house agent to guide you through the process, especially when it comes to knowledge of the appropriate technical terminologies, the Customs official described the online platform as a user friendly one.

He said, one who wishes to calculate for the duty estimate of general goods will need some basic information for the portal to assist him arrive at a suitable result.

This includes the net weight of item, the HS Code, Customs Procedure Code, Country of Origin, the Free on Board Value, Cost, Insurance and Freight Value.

“If you are at home and you want to do this by yourself, you should use the information provided on your commercial invoice to provide the various accurate values,” he instructed, as he demonstrated.

“The Customs Procedure Code will be generated from the procedure under which you are admitting your cargo which includes home consumption, warehousing, transit, among others,” he added.

On the other hand, for the calculation of used vehicles, an importer will need to provide the make, model and year of manufacturer of the said vehicle to help derive a close estimate of the duty payable.

Smile Agbemenu, the Chief Revenue Officer at the Policy and Programmes Department of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, explained that the duty calculator for used vehicles only provides the duty cost of previously cleared similar vehicles. He stated that the platform is paid-for, so the Ghana Revenue Authority incurs costs for each vehicle valuation request, which prevents them from allowing public access to search for any vehicle’s duty cost. Instead, users can search for and view duty costs of vehicles that have already been cleared to get an idea of the costs for similar vehicles they plan to import.

One good thing about the GRA duty calculator, he demonstrated, was the provision of a breakdown of the various tax computations which affect the final duty payable and this includes the Ghana Shippers Authority Service Fee, Network Charges, National Health Insurance Levy, Ghana Education Trust Fund Import Levy, and trans-national taxes like ECOWAS and African Union Import Levies.

KNUST Don asks: why are public sector businesses failing?

A lawyer at the Department of Marketing and Corporate Strategy of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Samuel Yaw Akomeah, is demanding   why the public sector cannot make profit when they are in active business.

Dr. Yaw Akomeah cannot understand why state owned companies are collapsing whilst those in the private sector are thriving in the same business environment.

According to him, he is asking these questions because Cadbury, a cocoa processing company, is making profit but same cannot be said about Cocoa Processing Company (CPC), which is state owned.

“What is the secret behind the operations of those who are making profit? What demon is in the public sector that they cannot make profit?” he asked

He was speaking at an event dubbed – ‘KSB Business and Policy Review Series’, which was organised by the KNUST and the Carisca Career Service Office under the theme: ‘The Industrial Transformation of Ghana: Strategic Priorities.’

According to Dr. Yaw Akomeah, Cocoa Processing Company (CPC), the makers of Golden Tree Chocolate have not been able to make profit in the last 20 to 25 years, having been established in 1965.

“CPC was established in 1965 to produce chocolate and value added cocoa. This company became a limited liability company in 1981. They were part of COCOBOD and COCOBOD weaned them off to be on their own. This company has never made profit for the last 20 to 25 years.”

To Dr. Akomeah, if cocoa processing was to be making profit, Ghana could have refused granting license to all those companies that came in later. He has, therefore, asked the next president to find an antidote to this chronic challenge.

Dr. Akomeah also contended that access to market has been a big issue in Ghana. According to him, farmers produce rice and yet do not get buyers.

To him, the government could have bought these rice and distribute them to the Prisons, Senior High Schools, Hospitals and so on, yet government is not doing so.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Association for Ghana Industries (AGI), Mr. Seth Twum-Akwaboah, on his part noted that Industrial transformation was crucial for Ghana, but the issue of energy security must first be addressed.

Industrial development, according to him, hinges on energy security, human resources and continuous innovation and among others.

He described Ghana’s industralisation drive as very weak, emphasising that the nation imports almost all raw materials.

GPHA, State Security Apparatus conduct Simulation Exercise at Tema Port

Ghana’s State Security Agencies after the Simulation Exercise at Tema Port

Ghana’s state security apparatus at the Port of Tema has once again tested its emergency response systems and interoperability in the recently organized exercise “kwemoojogban” to wit “Be Careful”.

This activity forms part of the port’s fulfilment of the ISPS code which requires member ports to partake in quarterly drills and annual exercises to maintain alertness and combat readiness.

This simulation exercise that took place on Friday, June 14, saw the combined forces of security personnel including GPHA Security, Ghana Navy, Marine Police and Immigration among others quell 4 volatile scenarios at relative efficiency.

What is more impressive is the fact that, only a few top officials of these institutions knew about the simulation, demonstrating the preparedness levels of officers at various posts.

The exercise featured four scenarios: an uprising at the transit terminal, demonstrators breaching the eastern gate, pirates infiltrating through the fishing area, and the army deactivating an explosive at the central gate.

The incident commander and harbour master at the Port of Tema, Capt. Tawiah rated the performance of the combined forces at 85%.

“It was superb, looking at how the EOD Squad and the Ghana Navy responded. Even within our medical team and the fire and safety, how they responded to the calls. Everything was on course,” he said.

The Tema Port Security Manager, Colonel Benjamin Boamah was particularly impressed with the interoperability between his outfit and the other security agencies.

“The cooperation has been very good. It exceeded my expectation. Everything went well from the word go.

“Even the pre coordinating conferences we had, there was full participation from all parties therefore, by the time we came in we were all prepared and knew what was expected of us. When we started, the cooperation and enthusiasm was there that is why the exercise ended very well and it was very successful”, he said.

He interacted with the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, and a delegation from the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana, led by Rev. Dr. Stephen Yenusom Wengam.

Dr. Prempeh’s visit to the traditional ruler of the Abuakwa State on Thursday, June 20, 2024 sought the revered traditional ruler’s wisdom and guidance.

“Osagyefo’s wise and fatherly counsel has been invaluable, shaping many aspects of my personal and political life and so this was another profound opportunity to listen to his words of wisdom,” Napo wrote on his Facebook and X pages moments after the visit.

The King of the Akyem Abuakwa Kingdom, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, in welcoming the Energy Minister, lauded his humility and dedication to Ghana’s development.

He praised Napo’s gesture of seeking wisdom and wise counsel from traditional authorities in his work.

Later, on Friday, June 21, 2024 Dr. Prempeh, in a gesture of interfaith dialogue and collaboration, welcomed a delegation from the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana.

“The nexus between politics and religion are though distinct, the two are intertwined in their impact on society,” he underscored.

He stressed the need for a just, compassionate and inclusive society, built on shared values of integrity, empathy and service that underpin both political and religious leadership.

Rev. Wengam and his team prayed for Napo and offered intercessory prayers for the country’s political leaders.

Ghana Not in Energy Crisis

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has, meanwhile, demonstrated his expertise in finding sustainable solution to Ghana’s energy needs on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 when he addressed questions from Minority Members of Parliament (MPs), regarding power rationing and electricity cuts experienced in some parts of the country, a couple of weeks ago.

Dr. Prempeh, affectionately called Napo, told the legislators at a plenary sitting that the energy sector under his watch had not plunged into crisis, warranting load-shedding due to power outages.

He explained that the power outages experienced two months ago were not due to a power crisis but rather unforeseen factors, such as rapid population growth and increased business setups.

For instance, Dr. Prempeh noted that areas like East Legon, initially planned as residential districts, have transformed into business hubs, overloading existing power lines and transformers.

This surge in demand, combined with an unexpected gas leak at Cen Power, resulting in an instant power loss of 340 Mega Watts and maintenance at Amandi Power Plant, led to power outages.

GRIDCo also requested emergency outages in some areas, exacerbating the situation.

Napo in discussion with Okyenhene

These incidents were unplanned, making it impossible for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to announce a scheduled load-shedding program, he emphasised.

“Mr. Speaker, a myriad of factors caused power outages in different parts of the country at different times. ECG couldn’t have announced a load-shedding program because most incidents were unplanned,” he noted.

Dr. Prempeh made these remarks in response to an urgent question from the NDC MP for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, on behalf of the NDC MP for Tamale North, Alhassan S. Suhuyini, who was absent.

Dafeamekpor asked if the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had been load-shedding power, and if not, why the power outages occurred.

Despite providing clarity, some Minority MPs pressed for more information on the current power situation, as the original question referred to the situation two months prior.

Dr. Prempeh maintained that the ECG is not undertaking a scheduled load-shedding program but will address any challenges that arise to ensure stable power distribution.

Gov’t releases GH¢20m for the payment of Loans to students

Mr Nuhu Bayorbo Mahama, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SLTF

The government, through the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), on Friday, released an amount of GH¢20 million for the payment of Loans to students in various private and public tertiary institutions across the country.

The amount is expected to benefit 10,243 students who have applied for student loans to finance their education.

Mr Nuhu Bayorbo Mahama, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SLTF, who disclosed this to the media on Friday explained that cumulatively, the trust fund has disbursed about GH¢58 million to 54,658 students for the 2023/24 academic year of which 27 million out of it was also paid to about 68,000 teacher trainees as allowance within the same period.

Assurance

He assured all students that the government through the Education Ministry and the SLTF will continue to prioritize their needs to enhance their studies.

The CEO indicated that the payment was to help all the students register and write their examinations.

Mr Mahama also mentioned that the government in May, released funds for the settlement of outstanding student loans and teacher training allowances.

He stated that since the introduction of the No Guarantor Policy two years ago, the demand for student loans has increased drastically due to the removal of the burden students used to face with getting people to guarantee their loans.

Each beneficiary student is expected to receive between a minimum of GH¢1500 and a maximum of GH¢3000 depending on the needs of the students.

Background

One major challenge that confronted many tertiary students in the country in the past decades was how to get people to guarantee them access to student loans.

It was based on this that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government launched the No Guarantor policy in June 2022 to ease the burden of tertiary students.

I have big love for Camidoh; I’ll always support him –George Britton

Camidoh and George Britton

Former manager of Afrobeats artiste Camidoh, George Mensah Britton, has pledged his unflinching support for the artiste. This comes after the two announced that they no longer work together.

While some had suggested that the end of their work relationship may have been occasioned by a rift, they two say it was on mutual grounds.

Camidoh had earlier said on Hitz FM that after the expiration of their contract, they decided not to renew it due to other engagements George Britton had signed up to and his relocation to the United Kingdom.

George has reiterated these sentiments in a Facebook post by eulogising the ‘Sugarcane’ hit maker.

George Britton’s post on Facebook;

“Camidoh and I have shared some incredible successes together. Dedicating three years of my life to building his amazing music brand with the team has been a beautiful journey. However, I’ve decided to conclude my 15-year career in artist management to focus on new challenges in Europe and America. I have a BIG LOVE for Camidoh and will always support him. While I’ve officially stepped down from the team, I will continue to champion him as a young brother and an amazing talent in an unofficial capacity.”

Why I refused to collaborate with secular artists -Joe Mettle

Joe Mettle

Multiple award-winning Ghanaian gospel singer Joe Mettle has drawn a clear line regarding collaborating with secular artistes, emphasising his reluctance to explore such prospects.

Speaking on Hitz FM, the “Kadosh” singer shed light on his decision to turn down a collaboration offer from rapper Sarkodie, citing spiritual guidance as his reason.

He mentioned that other secular artistes, notably Manifest, have also approached him for potential collaborations, but he has steadfastly declined their invitations, adhering to his principled stance.

“This conversation again? Yes, Sarkodie talked about it. So, I will tell you point blank, collaborating with secular artistes is a door I don’t want to open. When the spirit allows you to do certain things, he has a reason for it, but until then…

“And I think by principle… You know I have so many friends that if you do one, you have to do for everyone.

“Yes, Manifest. He is my brother, but he has been calling me out a lot on radio because of this. Maybe when the time comes or I get the release, I will do it. But that spirit has to bear witness with mine,” he said.

The conversation about Joe Mettle collaborating with secular artistes has been simmering, with the public eagerly seeking to know his stance.

His answer has always been consistent with his Christian principles of seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit.
