Samira Bawumia, the Second Lady, under the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP) has highlighted the urgent need to break barriers and empower women and girls through improved menstrual hygiene management.

“I join my voice to all those who are championing efforts to eradicate period poverty. Together, we can take away the stigma, misconception, and challenges that women and girls face monthly,” she said.

The second lady was speaking at a ceremony where she donated five thousand packs of sanitary pads and Menstrual Hygiene Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) packs to female students in the Ga Central Municipal Education Directorate.

The event, which was under the year’s theme: “Together for a Period-Friendly World,” the second lady underscored the importance of collective action to provide accurate information and ensure access to affordable and sustainable menstrual products.

Mrs Bawumia highlighted that many women and girls still face challenges in accessing safe water, sanitation and menstrual products, a situation known as period poverty.

“Period poverty leads to a cascade of negative impacts, including missing school days, increased health risks such as urinary tract infections, a cause of cervical cancer and social exclusion ultimately diminishing economic opportunities,” Mrs. Bawumia explained.

She also addressed the stigma and discrimination menstruating girls and women face, noting that in some cultures they are seen as unclean, which restricts their movements and access to certain spaces.

“Certain cultural norms also forbid menstruating women and girls from touching certain foods with the belief that they would go bad. Simply put, period poverty affects women and girls in diverse ways and it is unacceptable,” she asserted.

Mrs. Bawumia called on the government, NGOs, faith-based organisations and academia to work together to create sustainable solutions and to break the silence surrounding menstruation, which often leads to ignorance and neglect, including at the policy level.

“Our advocacy must translate into policy change. From schools to workplaces, from rural villages to urban centers, let us create an enabling environment.

“Access to affordable and sustainable menstrual products will ensure that girls and women adopt healthy and hygienic menstrual practices,” she urged.

Dakoa Newman, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, who also addressed the students, emphasised the critical need for enhanced menstrual health management and gender equality.

In her address, the minister underscored the importance of addressing the challenges girls face, regarding their sexual and reproductive health rights.

“It is prudent that proper menstrual health management is provided to safeguard the dignity and integrity of girls, improve their school performance, and reduce dropout rates among them,” she stated.

The Minister lamented the persistent stigma surrounding menstruation in many societies, where it is often seen as contaminated and impure.

“There is no open conversation on ensuring a healthy way of life for girls,” Newman remarked. She called for continuous education and sensitisation of all stakeholders, including opinion leaders, parents, teachers and the girls themselves to foster a positive outlook on menstruation as a fulfilling and natural experience.

Dr. Kwabena Bempah-Tandoh, Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) emphasised the importance of addressing menstrual health challenges faced by girls and women, advocating for a dignified and confident approach to menstruation.

“Menstruation is a natural biological process experienced by half of the world’s population, yet it remains shrouded in stigma, silence and shame,” he stated.

He highlighted the harmful practices and misinformation that arise from these taboos and called for comprehensive menstrual health education in schools.

“We prioritise the provision of adequate menstrual hygiene facilities, including clean and private WASH facilities, access to clean water and disposal facilities for menstrual products,” he noted.

These efforts, he said, are essential for the health and well-being of female students and contribute to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

He urged parents, guardians and teachers to play their roles as protectors of learners, advocating for breaking the silence and challenging the stigma surrounding menstruation.

He also called on Parliament and government leaders to pass a law removing taxes on menstrual pads and supporting local production to reduce period poverty.

The project, which was funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the United States of America is aimed at equipping the GIS to effectively safeguard and manage migration in the northern frontiers. The newly renovated border post comprises an Arrival and Departure Hall, a WASH facility, Offices, Server and Control rooms, among others.

She noted with gratitude, that the IOM is undertaking similar interventions at the Mognori and Pulmakom borders. As part of efforts to facilitate immigration control with attention to security, these borders are also fitted with solar power systems to ensure that the Migration Information and Data System (MIDAS) run without interruptions.

According to the Deputy Minister, the installation of MIDAS at the various borders signifies a new era of intelligent border management which will streamline processes for legitimate travelers and cargo, reducing wait times and encourage economic activity.

Eyiah indicated that the initiative was part of a broader Government effort to strengthen the country’s border governance framework. She added that the Government is committed to creating a secure and efficient border environment that promotes regional integration and economic development.

On his part, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kwame Asuah Takyi (Esq), said the commissioning is as a result of the meaningful cooperation between INL of the Government of the USA, IOM and GIS.

The CGI explained that such assistance from international partners augments Government’s frantic effort in resourcing the GIS over the years.

He expressed the Service’s gratitude to the Government of the United States of America for its generous support towards the refurbishment of Kulungugu, Hamile, Namoo, Pulimakom, Mognori and Bunkpurugu borders; all in the interest of both national and international security.

More than mere infrastructure, the CGI described the projects as representing the parties’ commitment to secure borders for a safer world and more humane conditions for migrants across the globe.

He, therefore, urged all stakeholders in migration management to adopt practices and measures that promote humane, orderly and safe migration.

Representative of the Chief of IOM and Senior Programme Manager for IOM Ghana, Mr. Nnamsi Iwuora, expressed the Organisation’s commitment to support improved management and security of Ghana’s borders in five areas which include; border infrastructure and equipment, digitalisation and data analysis, community engagement and policing, crisis preparedness and regional cooperation.

He explained that the commissioned project was another step in this direction, adding that the donation of border patrol equipment such as motorbikes, night vision googles, solar lamps, tents, metal detectors and other interventions are in line with IOM’s commitment to supporting the Government of Ghana and the GIS to enhance surveillance of the unapproved routes and maintain constant vigilance at the borders.

The Upper East Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, commended the CGI for his transformational leadership and for constantly touching base at borders across the country to observe conditions firsthand and engage with his men.

In a related development, the CGI has commenced a working tour of the five northern regions. He has since visited and engaged with border security Officers at the Paga sector and the Kandiga Inland Checkpoint.

Mr. Takyi earlier called on the Regional Minister of the Upper East, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Paramont Chief and Overlord of Talensi traditional areas, His Royal Highness Tongo-Raana Naab Kugbil Namalteng and the Paga Pio, His Eminence Pe Charles Awia Awampaga II.

Ahuofe Patri

Actress Priscilla Opoku Agyeman, widely recognised by her stage name Ahuofe Patricia from the ‘Boys Kasa’ series, considers her most significant achievement to be her widespread recognition among Ghanaians. During an interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show, Ahuofe Patricia expressed her pride in her popularity, noting the difficulty in achieving such widespread fame.

“My biggest achievement is that everyone knows me in Ghana. Most Ghanaians know me, and that’s an achievement,” she remarked. Ahuofe Patricia’s fame soared after her leading role in the youth-oriented short film series ‘Boys Kasa’, where she was affectionately nicknamed ‘Ahuofe Patri’—meaning ‘Beautiful Patricia’ in Akan.

In the series, she portrayed a difficult lady, as her counterpart, Kalybos, attempted to gain her trust and convince her to accept his relationship proposal because he liked her.

As the episodes unfolded, ‘Ahuofe Patri’ became a household name in Ghana. Some people even thought that was her birth name due to how the name was mentioned everywhere she went. To date, she is usually called by her name.

Despite this, Priscilla Opoku Agyeman has no issue with people using her stage name. “No, it doesn’t worry me. They’ve accepted me, and I’m fine with however they want to accept me,” she said.

Priscilla began her career after reaching the final 10 in the Miss Malaika beauty pageant and gained further recognition through her comedy skits with Kalybos in ‘Boys Kasa’.

Beyond her acting career, she is also known for her advocacy work, particularly through her NGO ‘She Power’, which mentors young girls and promotes gender equality, aiming to combat sexual abuse in Africa.

Late Iran President Ebrahim Raisi

Iran has begun the formal registration of presidential candidates ahead of a snap vote next month to replace the late Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash earlier this month. The election was originally slated for 2025 but was brought forward to June 28 following Raisi’s death on May 19.

Presidential hopefuls will have five days to register, IRNA added. Raisi and seven members of his entourage, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, were killed when their aircraft came down on a fog-shrouded mountainside in northern Iran.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has since assigned Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, 68, as caretaker president in accordance with the constitution.

State media reported that “around 30 people” came forward to submit applications for candidacy, but “none of them met the basic conditions for qualification”.

The AFP news agency reported that former reformist lawmaker Mostafa Kavakebian and conservative parliamentarian Mohammadreza Sabaghian submitted their applications to the  Ministry of Interior. Candidates must be between the ages of 40 and 75 and have at least a master’s degree, according to Iran’s electoral law.

Spain passes amnesty law for Catalan nationalists

Pro Catalan independence MPs celebrate the passing of an amnesty law

Spain’s Congress has approved the government’s contentious Catalan amnesty law, which has now overcome its final parliamentary hurdle ahead of its implementation.

The law seeks to withdraw pending legal action against Catalan nationalists for separatist activities, including a 2017 referendum and failed independence bid.

The law received the backing of a narrow majority, with 177 lawmakers voting in favour and 172 voting against. The amnesty law has spent six months in parliament since the Socialist Party (PSOE) of the prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, presented it.

It was approved in a preliminary congressional vote in March, before going to the opposition-controlled Senate, which delayed the bill’s passage but was unable to block it altogether.

Once the law is published in the official gazette, judges will have two months in which to apply it. It could still face legal appeals but they are not expected to hinder its implementation.

The amnesty is expected to benefit nearly 400 Catalan nationalists who have been facing legal action since November 2011. Many of them were involved in the organisation of an independence referendum in 2017 which was deemed illegal. Police who have been facing prosecution for attacking voters during the referendum will also benefit from the law.

Hong Kong convicts 14 activists of subversion

Among those found guilty is journalist Gwyneth Ho

Hong Kong has found 14 pro-democracy activists guilty of subversion in the largest use yet of a China-imposed National Security Law.

They included former lawmakers Leung Kwok-hung and Helena Wong, journalist-turned-campaigner Gwyneth Ho, and ordinary Hong Kongers who joined the mass protests of 2019 such as nurse Winnie Yu.

They were among the 47 activists charged with trying to “overthrow” the government by organising an unofficial primary in 2020 to pick candidates who can run for office.

They would have “[created] a constitutional crisis for Hong Kong” if they had indeed been elected to the legislature, the court ruled on Thursday.

Rights groups and several Western countries have condemned the verdict, repeating concerns that the prosecutions were “politically motivated”.

“The conviction… marks a further deterioration of fundamental freedoms and democratic participation in Hong Kong,” said EU foreign affairs spokeswoman, Nabila Massrali.

Outside the court house, Vanessa Chan, the wife of Leung Kwok-hung, was arrested along with three other activists for trying to stage a protest, according to police sources.

Ms Chan is now the chairperson of the League of Social Democrats, one of the very few pro-democracy political groups that still exist in Hong Kong. An official said they had been engaged in “disorderly conduct”.
