New Juaben South MP promises to give beads market a facelift

0

Vendors at the Koforidua beads market have expressed their profound appreciation to the Member of Parliament (MP) for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, for making the efforts to give the market a facelift.

The market, which is believed to have been in existence for over 200 years, started from Koforidua Jackson Park in an open space, but later moved to the Jubilee Park, which is closed to the Regional Police Command at Galloway

The current location of the market, provided by the local government authority, became necessary when the decision was taken to reconstruct Jackson Park, but the market has suffered many setbacks due to lack of basic facilities.

The open-space beads and crafts market, which operates mainly on Mondays and Thursdays lack security lights and washrooms.

Based on these challenges, the Member of Parliament visited the market to have first-hand information and also held discussion with the vendors.

Speaking with The Chronicle, the leader of the market, Sumaila Alhassan, thanked the MP and reaffirmed his confidence in him.

‘As I Grow’ educates girls on mensuration

As I Grow, an Akuapem-Larteh based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in the Akuapem North municipality of the Eastern Region has advanced a strong argument on the need to depart from the long-held perception and orientation within the ecosystem of tradition and culture that menstruation is a  taboo and, therefore, women in their periods should not be entertained.

In the quest to change the narrative, leadership of the NGO on Tuesday organised a conference on the theme: “Beyond the Dream of the Girl”, as part of activities to observe this year’s International Menstrual Hygiene Day.

The sanitary pads distributed

The event, which took place at the Benkum Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality of the region brought high profile personalities with strong influence in the society to talk to the students.

The personalities included; Mr. Godfred Arko, Mrs. Rev. Diana Hopeson, Ghanaian gospel singer and a former president of the Musicians Union of Ghana. Others are CEO of As I Grow, Mr. Debrah Bekoe Isaac and Madam Juliana Ako.

They all took the students through topics such as ‘Ways of Empowering Your Dreams’ and ‘Connection, keeping your menstrual life in shape’.

Other topics were choosing the right path in your studies, how to identify yourself, your dreams and carry the dreams along and protecting your dreams and bringing them to reality.

The gathering was treated to cultural performance from Dewu Cultural Troupe that depicted the enviable traditional culture that defines Ghanaian heritage.

In her discussion with the students, Mrs. Rev. Diana Hopeson called on Ghanaians, particularly traditional leaders and men to change their mind set towards the menstruation of the women.

She advocated for a conscious change of certain cultural practices, including the neglect of the girl-child or seeing women as unclean during their menstrual period.

According to her, some years ago, there was no proper or hygienic way of observing the menstrual period as women were using pieces of cloth and other bizarre materials.

But in this day and age, there are proper and hygienic materials that women use without even noticing that they are in their menses.

She disclosed that some young and old men have taken advantage of young girls who cannot afford to purchase sanitary pads to sleep with them.

The singer further hinted that many young school going girls have become truant and lose their self-confidence during that part of the month because they cannot afford the purchase of sanitary pads.

Addressing the issue of pad for sex, the award-winning gospel musician charged parents to be responsible for the provision of sanitary pads for their children.

On her part, Madam Juliana Ako took the students, particularly the girls, through the fixing of pads firmly on their pants in order to reduce the tendencies of spillage, leading to staining themselves.

She charged the girls and women in general to consciously practice changing their pads at least two times in the day, as well as bathing when they are menstruating.

Madam Ako advised the young girls not to buy pads based on the brand or how colourful the pad looks, but should rather look out for quality.

The CEO of As I Grow, Mr. Debrah Bekoe Isaac told this reporter that even though the day was World Menstrual Day, his office decided to add the conference to holistically look at the development of the girl-child.

The conference, to him, will not only teach the girls about their menstrual conditions, but identify their dreams and how to shape those dreams. Hundreds of sanitary pads running into thousands of cedis were distributed to the young girls at the end of the conference.

Professor Mark Owusu-Boadu, Eastern Regional chairman for Peace Council

The Eastern Regional chairman of the Peace Council, Professor Mark Owusu Boadu has called on Ghanaians particularly the youth not to allow themselves to be used to create confusion in the country during this year’s elections.

According to Professor Boadu, who doubles as the Dean of Graduate School at the All-Nations University (ANU), a Koforidua based private university, it would be imperative for Ghanaians to religiously and jealously guide the peace the county is enjoying.

“Let this year’s political campaign and election be conducted in an atmosphere that defines Ghanaians as common people with the same goal,” he said.

This, according to him, would not only bring peace and understanding, but the laying of a foundation for socio-economic development of the country.

He was speaking at the United Nations International Women’s Day for Peace celebration, which was held here at Suhum in the Eastern Region.

The Eastern Regional chairman for Peace Council further advised politicians not to be carried away by the huge crowd that greet their campaigns, but rather be modest in their choice of words on their various campaign platforms.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Middle Belt Development Authority, Mrs. Joyce Opoku Boateng, commended women for their various roles in ensuring peace and security over the past years in the country.

According to her, women have important roles in ensuring that Ghana conducted free and fair elections in the upcoming December elections.

Obi never received money from Abure –Tanko debunks N850m claims

Peter Obi

The Obi-Datti Chief Spokesman, Dr Yunusa Tanko has reacted to the claim by Mr Calistus Okafofor that the National Chairman of Labour Party, Bar Julius Abure, gave the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi N850 million to prosecute the 2023 election.

Tanko said Obi did not collect any funds from the party, describing the claim as false.

In a statement he signed and made available to DAILY POST on Wednesday, Tanko noted that it was Obi who actually gave money to the party.

He challenged Okafor to produce evidence if actually the chairman told him that he gave Obi money for the purpose of campaigning during the election.

Tanko declared that he was in the forefront of the campaign and privy to most of the expenses during the campaign and to the best of his knowledge, the party never provided any money directly to Obi to support his campaign rallies across the country.

The Campaign spokesman further stressed that Obi and his supporters were quite aware of all the campaign of calumny being orchestrated recently from various quarters against the LP leader just to paint him in bad faith by those scared of his rising acceptance by the Nigerian people.

“We are aware that people are already scheming for 2027 and it is unfortunate that certain individuals have chosen to divert attention from the high rate of insecurity and poverty that are currently threatening the very existence of our nation by constantly attacking the personality of Peter Obi.

“Those are the enemies of Nigeria and Nigerians but l know that God will disappoint them and rescue our country from their grips whether they believe it or not,” he stated.

The Tripartite Committee meeting on the new minimum wage will reconvene on Friday, May 31, 2024, as the Federal Government has extended an invitation to Organised Labour for the continuation of negotiations.

The letter which was signed by the Secretary of the Committee, Ekpo Nta, was sent to the Presidents of the two labour centres namely the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The scheduled meeting will be the seventh in the series of meetings by the committee, as members try to agree on what should be the new minimum wage.

The last meeting on Tuesday was deadlocked as the Organised Labour rejected the ₦60,000 offer by the Federal Government.

The labour representatives in the committee however adjusted their demands downward from the initial ₦497,000 naira minimum wage request to ₦494,000 naira

For months, labour unions and the Federal Government have been locked in negotiations over a new minimum wage with the former giving an ultimatum of May 31st.

Labour had initially demanded a  ₦615,000 minimum wage but reduced it twice – now at ₦494,000. The government and the Organised Private Sector had initially proposed ₦48,000 and ₦54,000 which were also rejected by the labour.

During a meeting of the committee on minimum wage on Tuesday, labour rejected the Federal Government’s new minimum wage proposal of N60,000.

According to TUC leader, Festus Osifo, the new proposal does not tally with the nation’s economic realities. He said with Nigeria’s inflation rate of 33.69% as of April 2024 based on data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), labour had to “completely reject” the Federal Government’s latest offer of ₦60,000.

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful addressing the media

The Government of Ghana, in partnership with the private sector, is to deploy affordable 5G mobile broadband services across the country.

The Government, in collaboration with Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia and Tech Mahindra has launched the Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC), a shared infrastructure company aimed at making Ghana a fully digitised nation by 2030.

The agreement, formalised in Mumbai, India on May 27, 2024 marks the culmination of over two years of planning and negotiations.

This partnership was announced during a news conference organised by the Ministry of Information in Accra, May 30, 2024.

Addressing the media, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister for Communications and Digitalisation stated that: “This initiative aims to deliver affordable 5G mobile broadband services across our nation, propelling us towards a fully digitized Ghana by 2030.

“NGIC’s neutral hosting model and Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) offering will accelerate national enablement programs, reduce the digital divide, optimize capital expenditure, and ensure efficient operating costs,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful explained.

NGIC has been awarded a 5G license and aims to launch services within the next six months. Nokia and Radisys will build the shared 4G and 5G infrastructure, with Microsoft and Tech Mahindra providing IT architecture and integration.

“This collaboration ensures that we leverage cutting-edge world-class expertise and technology to build a robust digital infrastructure,” the Minister added.

The minister indicated that the NGIC network will bolster government efforts to offer new services through e-government applications and inclusion programs, fostering opportunities for the private sector.

“NGIC’s origin is rooted in our national vision of universal access to broadband, delivering citizen-centric services through e-Gov initiatives,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful noted.

She explained that efforts towards a 100% digital Ghana include rehabilitating critical national infrastructure, building a rural telephony network connecting 3.4 million subscribers, and establishing the Cyber security Authority.

“We have also built a high-speed E-Gov network connecting 951 public institutions and agencies across the country, powered by 3500 kms of newly laid fibre,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful highlighted.

As the sole wholesale 5G licensee in Ghana, the minister said the NGIC will offer an open access-based neutral platform to all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).

AT and Telecel Ghana have already signed partnership agreements with discussions ongoing with MTN.

“This inclusive approach ensures that all service providers have equal access to the infrastructure needed to deliver high-quality services to their customers,” said Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful.

On the long term impact, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful added that the NGIC aims to deploy 4,400 sites, reaching 37 million customers by 2028, with a goal of making Ghana 100% digital by 2030.

“Through NGIC, we hope to increase the 4G penetration rate to 80% and beyond nationwide,” the Minister remarked.

She noted that Nokia, Tech Mahindra, and Radisys are key partners in the project. Nokia will provide a state-of-the-art Radio Access Network, while Tech Mahindra will build a Cloud Native Core Network. Radisys will offer Open Radio Access Network technology and affordable devices.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said with Ghana well-positioned for 5G implementation, the shared network infrastructure model aims to reduce investment pressures on MNOs while delivering best-in-class services.
