Israel strikes Houthis in Yemen after drone hits Tel Aviv

0
Israel strikes Houthis in Yemen

Israel has carried out air strikes on the Houthi-controlled Red Sea port of Hodeidah in Yemen, a day after a drone launched by the group hit Tel Aviv.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said his country aimed to send a message to the Houthi movement.

“The fire that is currently burning in Hodeidah, is seen across the Middle East and the significance is clear,” he said.

Houthi-linked news outlets said three people were killed and more than 80 injured in Saturday’s strikes, in what Houthi official Mohammed Abdulsalam said was a “brutal Israel aggression against Yemen”.

On Sunday morning, the Israeli military said it had shot down a missile fired from Yemen before it crossed into Israel’s air space.

It added that air sirens had been activated in Israel’s Red Sea port of Eilat “following the possibility of falling shrapnel”.

Mr Abdulsalam said that the Israeli strikes were aimed at pressuring the Houthis to stop supporting the Palestinians in Gaza, something he said would not happen.

It is the first time Israel has responded directly to what it says have been hundreds of Yemeni drone and missile attacks aimed at its territory in recent months.

Footage from Hodeidah showed huge fires raging on Saturday evening. The Houthi-run government in Sanaa said Israel struck oil storage facilities close to the shore, as well as a nearby power plant.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said: “After nine months of continuous aerial attacks by the Houthis in Yemen toward Israel, IAF [Israeli Air Force] fighter jets conducted an extensive operational strike over 1,800km [1,118 miles) away against Houthi terrorist military targets” in the area of the port of Hodeidah.

“The IDF is capable of operating anywhere required and will strike any force that endangers Israelis,” the statement said, adding that Saturday’s operation was codenamed Outstretched Arm.

Bangladesh court scraps job quotas after deadly unrest

0
Bangladesh protest

Bangladesh’s top court has scrapped most of the quotas on government jobs that had sparked violent clashes across the country that have killed more than 100 people.

A third of public sector jobs had been reserved for the relatives of veterans from the country’s war for independence from Pakistan in 1971.

But now the court has ruled just 5% of the roles can be reserved for veterans’ relatives.

Law Minister Anisul Huq said he welcomed the verdict. It is unclear how protesters will respond, with at least one student leader calling for demonstrations to continue.

Shah Manjurul Haque, a lawyer for petitioners who wanted the quotas kept in place, called the supreme court ruling “historic” and urged calm.

“Let everyone accept this verdict,” he told a press briefing, adding that “students should go home” and urging “third parties” not to “fish in the muddy waters” of the dispute.

However a spokesman for one of the student groups was quoted by AFP as saying the protests would continue.

“We welcome the Supreme Court verdict,” a spokesman for Students Against Discrimination told AFP. “But we won’t call off our protests until the government issues an order reflecting our demands.”

Some protest leaders have reportedly been arrested. Others are demanding justice for those killed in the clashes.

Streets in the capital Dhaka are deserted as a second day of curfew is in force, but sporadic clashes continued even after the supreme court ruling.

About 115 people are known to have died but local media report a much higher casualty figure. At least 50 people were killed on Friday alone.

Trump tells Michigan rally he ‘took a bullet for democracy’

0
Donald Trump

Donald Trump has told a rally in Michigan that he “took a bullet for democracy” when an attempt was made on his life last week.

He also derided President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris at the event in Grand Rapids – his first with new running mate JD Vance and the first since he survived the assassination attempt.

He told a packed arena that Democrats had accused him of being “a threat to democracy” and, to huge applause, said he was ready to “take back the White House”.

An investigation is under way into the shooting last weekend, which left Trump with a wounded ear – though the prominent white bandage he wore throughout the Republican National Convention had on Saturday been replaced by a discreet flesh-toned plaster.

The gunman flew a drone above the site of the shooting ahead of time, law enforcement officials have told US media.

The Grand Rapids event was one of several campaign stops the former president has made in the key battleground state, as polls show him in a close race against Mr Biden.

Mr Biden, meanwhile, has had to pause campaign events after testing positive for Covid-19. He continues to resist growing calls from members of his own party to drop out of the race due to concerns about his age and cognitive abilities.

During his speech Mr Trump repeated the falsehood that the 2020 election – which he lost to Mr Biden – had been “rigged”.

He mocked the crisis around Mr Biden’s own bid for re-election as president, saying: “They don’t know who their candidate is, and neither do we.”

Subin Parliamentary Aspirant institutes Poverty Alleviation scheme for constituents

0
Joseph Boakye-Danquah – Independent candidate for Subin

The Independent Subin parliamentary aspirant, Mr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, has organised an Entrepreneurial Skills training to empower constituents, in line with his vision to address poverty identified as the major problem facing the constituents.

The first batch of 80 trainees was taken through making sandals, bracelets, necklaces with beads, soap making and shampoo and liquid soap.

Twenty of the number would be selected for financial assistance on a rotational basis and monitored for growth of their businesses.

A facilitator giving instructions at the soap making session at the training programme

The gesture is the aspirant’s contribution towards creating jobs in a bid to fight poverty and reduce unemployment among the constituents following the realisation that the constituency lacks the right type of political leadership to provide loan facilities, skills training and market to improve their lot.

Mr. Danquah is encouraged by the fact that about 80 per cent of delegates in the constituency are self-employed and that assistance in the form of credit facilities would inject funds into their businesses to inure to the benefit of the masses, by creating more job opportunities.

His focus is to invest resources in creation of jobs and improve existing businesses like shoe making, coffin making and printing and empowering market women.

He has erected walls and provided gates for the Anloga market to ensure security for traders and their wares.

Mr. J.B. Danquah, who broke away from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in protest against growing monetisation, has since become the new sensation in the Subin constituency, as he has embarked on a Poverty Alleviation programme, under which about 400 people have been offered an interest free loan to grow their small businesses.

He seeks to transform the economy of Subin constituency by creating an enabling environment for existing small scale businesses within the Kumasi Business District to thrive and thus absorb the youth in employment and make Subin constituency the economic hub of Kumasi, a self employment centre.

He has bemoaned what he termed identity politics, where the people vote for a personality from a political party which does not seek their welfare.

According to him, when a politician knows his votes are guaranteed under identity politics, he takes voters for granted, leading to multi-dimensional poverty, which has been the lot of Subin constituents all these 32 years since 1992.

The aspirant has condemned the situation where politicians buy leadership positions citing a case where a candidate had to pay GHC7,000 to each of the 900 delegates in the last primary, at the expense of the constituents and development in the constituency.

As a result, J.B. Danquah has decided to change the paradigm shift and stop identity politics in the Subin Constituency and focus on developing the people and the constituency.

Health Benefits Of Drinking Raw Milk

0

What Is Raw Milk?

Milk contains many bacteria and other microbes. That’s because all animals, even healthy ones, carry bacteria and can pass them into their milk. Some of these microbes can cause dangerous diseases. To protect you, many dairy farmers kill these germs by heating the milk to a certain temperature. This process is called pasteurization. Milk that hasn’t been pasteurized is called raw milk.

Today, most milk in the United States is pasteurized. You can still buy raw milk in some states, but it’s not recommended. The CDC and other health agencies advise against drinking raw milk because it can lead to dangerous diseases like bovine tuberculosis and listeriosis.

In the past, many people got sick from the bacteria in raw milk. But over the last hundred years, pasteurization has dramatically reduced the number of illnesses caused by drinking milk.

But that doesn’t mean getting sick from raw milk is a thing of the past. That’s because some people still drink raw milk. Over the past few years, there have been dozens of disease outbreaks caused by raw milk. Hundreds of people get sick each year, and some need to be hospitalized. One study estimated that 840 times more people get sick from raw dairy products than from pasteurized products, and 45 times as many people need to be hospitalized.

Despite this, there are still many rumors and misconceptions about raw milk. Some people think it has healthy bacteria and extra nutrients. But there’s no research to support this.

In reality, raw milk and pasteurized milk have similar health benefits, but raw milk is much more likely to carry dangerous bacteria. When it comes to drinking raw milk, the risk outweighs any possible reward.

How long does raw milk last?

Raw milk has an average shelf life of 7-10 days. How long it lasts depends on how much bacteria is in it.

Raw vs. Pasteurized Milk

Raw and pasteurized milk are basically the same, except that raw milk can contain bacteria.

These bacteria can come from:

  • An animal’s poop or skin
  • The soil, water, or air in the barn
  • Milking equipment

Pasteurization kills the germs in milk that can cause foodborne illness. It doesn’t change the milk’s nutritional value.

Is raw milk illegal?

Raw milk is illegal in nearly half of U.S. states. But even in states where it’s legal, there are laws that farmers and buyers need to follow.

Every state has different laws. Many places have rules about farm licensing, the milking and bottling process, or labeling. Some states might only allow the sale of raw goat milk, or raw milk might be allowed only in pet food. In some states, you might even need a prescription to buy raw milk.

In addition, states decide where and how raw milk can be sold. Some states allow its sale:

  • In retail stores
  • At farmers’ markets
  • At the farm where it was produced
  • Through “cow-share” programs (when a person buys part of a private herd)

Laws requiring pasteurization can protect people from getting sick. About 4 in 5 disease outbreaks linked to raw milk happen in states where raw milk is legal in some form.

Types of Raw Milk

Along with raw cow milk, you can get raw goat milk and raw sheep milk. These are collected from goats and sheep, respectively. They aren’t pasteurized.

Raw goat milk

One cup of raw goat milk contains:

  • Calories: 168
  • Protein: 9 grams
  • Fat: 10 grams
  • Carbohydrates: 11 grams
  • Fiber: 0 grams
  • Sugar: 11 grams

Raw goat milk is a good source of:

  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Vitamin C

Raw goat milk, like pasteurized milk, is an excellent source of vitamin A.

Raw sheep milk

One cup of raw sheep milk contains:

  • Calories: 264
  • Protein: 14 grams
  • Fat: 17 grams
  • Carbohydrates: 13 grams
  • Fiber: 0 grams
  • Sugar: 10 grams

Raw sheep milk is a good source of:

  • Riboflavin (vitamin B2)
  • Vitamin B12
  • Calcium

Like pasteurized milk, raw sheep milk is a great source of vitamin A.

Milk Benefits

Even though it’s getting more popular, there are no scientifically proven benefits to drinking raw milk. In fact, health agencies like the FDA recommend drinking only pasteurized milk.

But there’s plenty of research supporting the health benefits of milk in general, including:

Organ health

The vitamin A in milk supports several organs, including your heart, lungs, and kidneys.

Lower blood pressure

Milk is an excellent source of potassium, a mineral that has been linked to lower blood pressure and good overall heart health.

Eye health

Vitamin A, which is found in all forms of cow’s milk, has been shown to support eye health. It lowers your risk of macular degeneration, a disease that can affect the eyesight of older people.

Bone health

People of all ages need calcium to maintain bone health. But the research is unclear about whether milk is the best source of calcium for this purpose. The vitamin A in milk may actually weaken bones.

Moringa Debunks Former CEO’s Allegations

0

Introduction

Moringa SCA SICAR/Moringa Mauritius Africa (‘Moringa’) is deeply concerned by the numerous publications in print and online media of allegations made by Issa Ouedraogo (‘Issa’) against it. The allegations deliberately misrepresent both Moringa’s business practices and legal proceedings that have unfolded between Moringa as investors, and Issa.

Issa has maliciously designed these publications to cast aspersions on Moringa’s integrity in the business marketplace and sadly, on the ethical conduct of Moringa’s legal representatives, Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa& Ankomah (‘BELA’). Moringa therefore wishes to address Issa’s allegations and to correct the inaccuracies and misrepresentations made to the public.

Presentation
Moringa is an investment fund launched in 2013 that aims to finance agroforestry projects in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America to support the development of sustainable agricultural value chains and reduce poverty in often isolated rural zones. In Africa, Moringa has invested in agribusinesses to reinforce their financial structure, supply chain and modernize their plant. In Ghana, B-Bovid buys fresh fruits bunches from smallholders and processes them into red crude palm oil for the local market.

Investment
2. In 2018, Moringa invested over ₡24,000,000 (the equivalent of $5,000,000 at the time) in B-Bovid Limited (‘B-Bovid’), a palm oil processing company that Issa founded. At the time, B-Bovid owed money a bank, and both B-Bovid and Issa’s properties, which had been used to secure the debt, were to be sold to pay the debt. Moringa and Issa Ouedraogo therefore entered into an Investment Agreement and a Shareholder’s Agreement, for Moringa to invest in B-Bovid and become a large majority shareholder.

BELA’S First Instruction
3. Moringa’s Paris-based lawyers engaged BELA to provide legal advice on the investment to ensure compliance with Ghanaian law. BELA’s role was confined to conducting due diligence on B-Bovid, reviewing transaction documents, and amending B-Bovid’s constitution to reflect the terms of the agreements between Moringa and Issa. BELA did not negotiate the commercial terms of the transaction or the investment documents between Moringa and Issa Ouedraogo.

Issa’s Mismanagement
4. Moringa invested in B-Bovid on the basis of a business plan set out in the Investment Agreement and Shareholders’ Agreement, under which B-Bovid was to meet specified financial and operational targets under Issa’s leadership as CEO. However, after Moringa’s investment, B-Bovid (under Issa’s leadership), consistently failed to meet the agreed operational and financial targets, which was the purpose of the investment.

Issa failed to properly manage B-Bovid and placed the company on the verge of insolvency. Moringa then discovered that Issa’s mismanagement had started well before Moringa’s investment, so that the representations made by Issa, and on which Moringa had based their investment, were inaccurate. Nevertheless, in an effort to ensure the sustainability of B-Bovid, Moringa was compelled to extend a loan to B- Bovid, in addition to the investment already made into the company.

Further Investment
5. In 2019, Moringa engaged BELA to advise on a debt investment in B-Bovid, a EUR 1,200,000 Convertible Loan Agreement with B-Bovid to enable the company make up for shortfalls in the 2019 financial year, provide an opportunity for growth in its operations in the 2020 financial year and also, to finance the company’s needs as budgeted in the business plan. Moringa simultaneously entered into a Share Charge Agreement with Issa and B-Bovid, under which Issa charged all his present and future shares in B-Bovid as security for the loan.

Issa’s Removal as CEO
6. Despite the fresh capital injection, B-Bovid, under Issa’s leadership, again failed to meet all the key operational and financial targets required under the business plan. This was wholly attributable to Issa’s underperformance and mismanagement of B- Bovid. Indeed, it soon became clear to Moringa that Issa Ouedraogo simply lacked the requisite skills to run B-Bovid as a profitable business.

This led to discussions about appointing a new and better qualified CEO, so that Issa would take on the role of President of B-Bovid but on the same salary he enjoyed as CEO, and also maintain his role as director and Chairman of B-Bovid’s board. Issa however refused to resign as CEO, and eventually, was duly removed by B-Bovid’s board.

Issa’s removal was lawful and was in B-Bovid’s best interest. B-Bovid’s board also subsequently removed Issa Ouedraogo as an authorised signatory to the company’s bank accounts because he had announced that he would use any means, including illegitimate actions, to challenge the board’s decision.

Issa’s Misbehaviour
7. Following Issa’s removal as CEO, he refused to vacate his office and stationed armed security personnel at B-Bovid’s premises with instructions to prevent the new CEO and Moringa’s representatives from accessing premises. He forbade B-Bovid’s management personnel from communicating with Moringa’s appointed directors and effectively engaged in a forcible takeover of the company’s operations, managing/operating B-Bovid to the total exclusion of Moringa, its majority shareholder.

He directed B-Bovid’s customers to pay proceeds from the company’s sales into his personal bank accounts and took a number of unilateral decisions without consulting or involving Moringa.

Eventually, Issa unilaterally shut down the Company and purported to place the company’s workers on redundancy, with no compensation. Moringa has always tried to ensure continuity of operations and to support B-Bovid’s employees. Moringa continued to pay workers’ salaries for a year while operations were halted by Issa.

Arbitral proceedings
1. On 16 June 2021, Moringa instructed BELA to institute arbitration proceedings against Issa, pursuant to the provisions of the Shareholders’ Agreement and the Investment Agreement. This was after Moringa had extensively attempted amicable settlement with Issa, who refused to cooperate.

The reliefs sought by Moringa include a declaration that Issa was validly removed as CEO and a perpetual injunction restraining him from holding himself out or acting as the CEO of the Company. Moringa also filed an injunction application to prevent Issa from interfering in B-Bovid’s management during the arbitration proceedings.

The High Court granted the injunction, restraining both Issa and the new CEO from interfering in the administration and management of B-Bovid until arbitration proceedings had concluded. Subsequently, the Court appointed a Receiver/Manager as interim CEO until the arbitration had been determined.

Despite the injunction and the appointment of a Receiver/Manager, Issa continued to refuse to allow Moringa’s appointed directors access to the Company’s premises. The High Court appointed Receiver took over a factory where some of the critical machines, equipment and vehicles had been burnt into ashes.

The Receiver was therefore compelled to establish a permanent security detail at B-Bovid’s factory premises to ensure safety and security, because lssa continues to threaten workers and farmers of B-Bovid.
Enforcement of Share Charge Agreement

2. In April 2021, Moringa instructed BELA to assist with enforcing the Share Charge Agreement because B-Bovid had breached the loan agreement. BELA, acting on those instructions, enforced the Share Charge Agreement and facilitated the transfer of Issa’s shares to Moringa, in accordance with the Borrowers and Lenders Act, 2020 (Act 1052).

This is because under article 14 of the Shareholders’ Agreement, that Agreement became automatically terminated and extinguished Issa’s right to serve on the company’s board of directors.

The shareholders of B-Bovid therefore held an Extraordinary General Meeting in 2022 to approve a new constitution, which removed all references to the Shareholders Agreement, since it no longer existed.
Unfounded Allegations Against BELA
3. Similarly, the accusations of unethical behaviour and conflicts of interest against BELA are without merit.

BELA has filed a full response to Issa’s allegations with the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council, which shows that Issa’s allegations are unfounded and that BELA has strictly complied with legal and professional ethical obligations. What Issa is trying to do, is to give himself the power to dictate who our lawyers should be and how they should comply with our instructions. That cannot be allowed.

Moringa’s Commitment
4. Moringa reaffirms its commitment to ethical business practices and the pursuit of justice. We entreat the discerning public to ignore Issa Ouedraogo’s smear campaign against Moringa and trust in the legal process to unveil the truth.

Moringa remains dedicated to resolving the ongoing disputes constructively, in accordance with legal standards, and in the best interest of B-Bovid and all involved parties.
5. After the arbitration, Moringa will continue developing B-Bovid’s activities in Ghana as part of its poverty reduction strategy, which is Moringa’s priority.

Kai Havertz ties the knot with model girlfriend Sophia Weber

Kai Havertz and wife

Arsenal and Germany star Kai Havertz tied the knot with his long-term partner Sophia Weber in a stunning ceremony on Saturday.

Havertz has been taking a well-earned beak following his nation’s exit from the European Championship at the hands of eventual winners Spain.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a productive tournament and carried his late-season form for the Gunners into the competition. But German hopes of lifting a European Championship on home soil were dashed by Luis de la Fuente’s side.

Luckily for Havertz, he had the special occasion of his wedding to look forward to ahead of the start of the new campaign.

He and Weber, a model and social media influencer with over 390,000 followers on Instagram, were all smiles as they poised for a series of breathtaking photos.

The pair grew up in the same neighbourhood. While they were initially friends, they began a relationship in 2018.

The newlyweds took to Instagram where they shared some beautiful photographs from the ceremony with the caption, ‘18.07.24 – forever’. Their wedding came after Havertz announced his engagement last year following his £65million move to Arsenal from Chelsea.

Marseille close on £17m deal for Tottenham’s Hojbjerg

0
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

French club Marseille are in advanced talks to sign Tottenham and Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The 28-year-old is believed to be ready to leave north London and is available for about £17m.

Discussions are continuing over payment terms, but both sides expect the deal to go through.

Hojbjerg joined Spurs in 2020 in a £15m deal from Southampton, when Jose Mourinho was in charge.

He made 39 appearances for the club last season but only 10 of those were starts as Ange Postecoglou favoured Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in central midfield.

The Dane has entered the last year of his contract with Tottenham and will be available on a free transfer in 2025 if fresh terms are not agreed.

Spurs have strengthened their midfield this summer with the signing of Archie Gray from Leeds, and Lucas Bergvall from Swedish club Djurgardens.

Marseille have been on a recruitment drive since appointing former Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi.

“I liked Asamoah Gyan when I was young” -Nico Williams reveals

0
Nico Williams and Asamoah Gyan

Spain forward Nico Williams has disclosed his admiration for Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan.

The Athletic Bilbao forward, who has Ghanaian heritage, revealed that he grew up watching the former Black Stars captain.

Williams Jr, the younger brother of Ghana striker Inaki Williams, was one of Spain’s best players at the recently-ended European Championship, scoring and winning the Man of the Match in the final against England.

In an interview with 3 Sports during his visit to Ghana, Williams stated that Gyan was one of his inspirations in football.

“When I was young or little, at six years old, I liked Asamoah Gyan. He is our best striker. He scored a lot of goals. I loved Asamoah Gyan,” he said.

Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 109 matches and he also holds the record for the most goals scored by an African player at the World Cup. He retired from football last year at the age of 38.

Williams Jr, whose future at Bilbao remains a doubt, is on the path of carving a legendary career after helping Spain with a fourth European Championship title.

Mohammed Kudus cuts ties with his agent

0
Mohammed Kudus

West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus has decided to part ways with his agent, opting to be represented by his family instead.

This decision was revealed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who noted that the attacking midfielder will no longer work with Jennifer Mendelewitsch.

Mendelewitsch and her team were instrumental in facilitating Kudus’ transfer from Ajax to West Ham on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee, reported to be £38m plus add-ons.

Kudus made an immediate impact in his debut season with the Hammers, scoring 14 goals and providing six assists.

His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, catching the eye of Saudi Arabian clubs, with Al Nassr reportedly interested in a double swoop for him and teammate Lucas Paqueta.

Kudus’ talent and versatility have made him a key player for West Ham, and manager Julen Lopetegui is keen to retain his services.

However, the prospect of a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia could tempt the 23-year-old. With Paqueta also linked with a potential departure, losing both creative midfielders would be a significant blow for the Hammers as they aim to build on last season’s success.

West Ham will undoubtedly strive to keep hold of Kudus, but the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the player’s future.
