Let’s Support Okyenhene’s Call For A Law To Check Irresponsible Parents

0
Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori

The effects of bad parenting are profound and manyfold. Research shows that the role of parents in shaping the future of their children is undeniably crucial. If the parenting style the adult chooses is detrimental to the child’s development, the child may suffer lifelong implications.
As the primary architects of a child’s early experiences, parents wield immense influence over their children’s development and well-being.

Of all the adults in a child’s life, parents are the most important. From birth through the end of high school and beyond, our parents influence our development. However, some children can also suffer due to bad parenting because it inflicts harm and lasting damage on them.

Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin is calling for an enactment of a law that will withhold salaries of irresponsible parents. The withheld salaries, he suggested, should be used to take care of children they have fathered, but have refused to take care of.

Speaking at the 2024 Ohum Kan Festival durbar in Kyebi recently, Okyenhene argued that when such a law is enacted, it will compel parents to be responsible towards their wards and also help in reducing the menace of streetism in the country.

Okyenhene called on parents to be responsible and ensure the welfare and safety of their children in order to create a safer and peaceful community. He added that young children who have been left to their fate on the streets may become social misfits and return one day to torment the society that refused to care for them.

The Chronicle finds this law needful and even more urgent. It is still difficult to phantom why a parent will give birth and deliberately decide not to take care of their children.

Okyenhene’s proposal to enact a law that withholds salaries of irresponsible parents is a bold and necessary step towards ensuring the welfare of children and addressing the growing issue of streetism in Ghana.

Such a law, if enacted, would compel parents to take their duties seriously, providing much-needed care and support for their children, and ultimately contributing to a safer and more peaceful society. These children, without proper care and guidance, often fall prey to criminal vices such as drug abuse, prostitution and armed robbery among others. This situation not only threatens their future but also poses a risk to society at large.

He rightly pointed out that children left to fend for themselves on the streets are at risk of becoming a social menace, potentially turning against the very society that failed them.

Bad parenting is characterised by behaviours that harm a child’s development and well-being, it includes failing to monitor the child’s behaviour, not recognising deviant behaviour and erratic or excessive punishment. It also involves the parents prioritising their personal interests over the child’s best interests.

Bad parenting can cause deep-rooted issues, but it’s never too late to start the healing process now. Though it takes a lot of soul-searching and help, you can certainly find the strength to grow from your past trials.

In advocating for parental responsibility, The Chronicle suggests the naming and shaming of those parents who engage in these unethical practices. It is essential that we hold individuals accountable for their actions.

You’ll benefit more from me than Mahama …Bawumia woos Wa

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has asserted that the people of the Upper West Region will benefit more from his presidency than that of his main challenger, John Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stated that if he is elected for an eight-year term as President, the Upper West Region will experience greater benefits and development, compared to what it would achieve under a four-year term of John Mahama’s presidency.

Addressing a durbar of chiefs at the Wa Naa palace on Monday, July 22, 2024 Dr. Bawumia highlighted the significant powers vested in the President by Article 58 of the GhanaianConstitution and the unique opportunity presented to the North in the upcoming election.

“The nature of our Constitution in Ghana, Article 58, places all power in the hands of the President,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

“It is very, very important when you have an opportunity to become President to take that opportunity to serve this country, because you are in a position to help, to do a lot, to develop the country,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia noted the historic significance of the upcoming election, where both leading candidates hail from the North.

“In this particular election, we in the North face an interesting choice because the two main candidates are both from the North. It is either John Mahama or Dr. Bawumia. We are the two candidates. John Mahama has been President before. Dr. Bawumia has never been President,” he stated.

Reflecting on his tenure as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia expressed pride in his accomplishments, while underscoring the distinction between his role and the presidency.

“The way he has worked as Vice President, many people think he has been President. But he has not been President. He has done a lot of work as Vice President,” he emphasised.

The Vice President then presented a comparative outlook on the potential terms of both candidates.

“Amongst the two of us, one of us can be President for only four years. John Mahama can be President for only four years. Dr. Bawumia, God willing, can be President for eight years,” he pointed out.

Dr. Bawumia urged voters to consider the long-term benefits of his leadership, stating that, “I believe that the North and the Upper West will benefit more from the eight years of a Bawumia presidency than four years of the other option.”

When the presidency leaves the North, it may not come back for a very long time. So, if we have a chance to get the presidency, let us look at somebody who has already done a lot of work and shows that if he is President, he can do more. Let us get it for eight years and help this country.”

Dr. Bawumia made a heartfelt plea for support and prayers. “I am, therefore, pleading that in your prayers and your support, you help me to sit on that seat. Then you know you have your own son in the seat as President of the Republic of Ghana. And I will do everything to support the development of the West. We are already doing a bit. There is going to be a lot more done if you give me the opportunity. And I will continue to come back here time and time again,” he promised.

It wasn’t our intention to make you suffer -Finance Minister

Minister for Finance, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam

The Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has stated that the hardships many Ghanaians face daily were never the government’s intention. He acknowledged the situation and assured citizens of better days ahead.

Presenting the mid-year fiscal policy review on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 Dr. Adam noted that the past two years have been challenging globally, with significant impacts on businesses, families and the vulnerable.

He highlighted the severe economic pressures on the global economy, driving many youths to seek employment beyond what the state can offer, with Ghana not being an exception.

“The last two years have been extremely challenging globally and Ghana has not been an exception. The difficult economic environment has truly affected businesses and families, particularly the vulnerable in our society,” he said.

He added, “These challenges have severely affected households, increased the cost of living and limited job opportunities. Our young people continue to seek employment opportunities beyond what the state can provide. It has indeed been a difficult time and I empathise with our fellow Ghanaians.”

The mid-year fiscal policy review was presented in accordance with Article 1790 of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921).

It reviewed the Government’s 2024 Economic Policy and Financial Statement delivered by the Minister of Finance on November 15, 2023.

The 2024 budget is critical as the government navigates meeting societal needs and wants against the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) fiscal tightening requirements.

The government has set an ambitious target to mobilise total revenue of GHS176.4 billion, 22% higher than the 2023 target.

Dr. Adam noted that all hope was not lost, as the economy was rebounding. He underscored the government’s efforts towards fiscal stability and growth, stating that measures implemented over the last two years were yielding positive outcomes and promising a brighter future.

“Over the last two years, the government has embarked on decisive measures to get us back on the path of fiscal consolidation, economic stability and growth. I am happy to note that these policies are yielding the expected results,” he emphasised.

Tema Oil Refinery (TOR)

Macumba Tagoe, the newly-appointed Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) says the Refinery will resume refining crude in the next three months.

The Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery, which can refine 45,000 barrels per stream daily, was addressing a section of the media in Tema, during a visit to the Refinery by the Minister of State to the Ministry of Energy, Herbert Krapa, on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

Keeping the strategy his administration had devised to revive the facility to his chest, the MD informed the press that, “We’re going to start our plant. We are going to get the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) started and functional. In about a year, the Residual Cataractic Cracker will also start working, as well as the PRF.”
Continuing, Macumba Tagoe explained that the new management’s systematic plan would lead to the evolution of the crude processing capacity of the refinery from 45,000 barrels per stream daily to 100,000 per stream daily.
The Tema Oil Refinery has been nonfunctional for several years and attempts by the government to revive it have failed, given the lack of transparency in the selection process of a strategic partner.

British Monarch, Prince Charles, received Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at his Sandringham House, UK, during a private visit by the former.

In a message shared on X, formerly Twitter, by the official X handle of the Royal Family, it disclosed that the visit of the Ghanaian King, forms part of the Silver Jubilee celebration of Opemsuo.

“The King Welcomes The Asantehene – Ruler of the Kingdom of Ashanti in Ghana – to Sandringham House. His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is currently in the UK as part of his Silver Jubilee celebrations,” the British Royal Family stated.

Sandringham House, standing at the heart of the 8,000-hectare Sandringham Estate, is the private country retreat of King Charles III and The Queen Consort.

It is perhaps most widely known for the Royals’ Christmas morning walk, where they greet the public en route to the St Mary Magdalene Church.

It is a country house in the parish of Sandringham, Norfolk, England. It is one of the royal residences of Charles III, whose grandfather, George VI and great-grandfather, George V, both died there. The house stands in a 20,000-acre estate in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

In this visit, it is expected that the two influential leaders will address issues such as climate change and democracy among others.

Also, it is expected that the Ghanaian King will make a pronouncement on the release of stolen Ashanti artefacts to Ashanti Kingdom on lease by the British Government.

Early this year, the Manhyia Palace announced the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Ashanti monarch.

The week-long anniversary celebration was anchored by the Planning Committee, headed by Juabenhene, Nana Otuo Sereboe II, to give all persons the chance to celebrate with His Majesty, without recourse to social status.

Churches, different ethnic groups, students, businessmen and many others were given their turn with the Otumfuo.

The whole celebration was climaxed on Sunday, May 12, 2024 with a durbar at the Dwabrem Grounds of the Manhyia Palace, with thousands of people in attendance.

Among the dignitaries who attended were; President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Prime Minister for Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Keith Rowley, his wife, Mrs Sharon Rowley, the Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Second Lady, H.E Samira Bawumia, the Awomefia of Anlo State, Togbe Siri II and Ga Mantse Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru.

Since Asantehene ascended the Golden Stool, he has contributed numerously to the development of Ghana.

Key among them are; Restoring peace to Dagbon and the subsequent enskinment of an overlord for the people of Dagbon in the troubled area.

Moreover, Opemsuo, as soon as he became Ashanti King introduced Education Fund, which aims to support needy but brilliant students in Ashanti and Ghana at large.

In 2018, the Ashanti King mediated in a riot which ensued at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, following a protest by the students, which ended in the destruction of school properties.

There was also an intervention by the Golden Stool Occupant with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for Ghana to have access to credit for a bailout during the erstwhile administration of John Dramani Mahama.

As a visionary King, in 2019, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II unveiled a 10-year development plan for Kumasi.

Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea, the former Amasaman, MP

The Principal Elders of Nii Kwaku Fitii We, have vehemently denied recent media reports suggesting that they were defrauded by Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea, the former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Amasaman.

In a strongly worded statement issued today and signed by key figures, including Paul Laryea and James Adama Afful, the elders categorically dismissed the allegations as baseless and without merit.

They emphasised that Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea was duly appointed and entrusted with the leadership of the Nii Kwaku Fitii We family in October 2018, following traditional protocols.

According to them, the claims of financial misconduct totaling GH¢100,000 and misuse of his position for personal gains are entirely unfounded.

To them, Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea has faithfully executed his responsibilities for the collective benefit of the Fitii We family, in accordance with their customs and traditions.

Furthermore, the elders clarified that there are no ongoing criminal or civil proceedings against Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea in any court of law, asserting his innocence in the matter.

The statement also addressed the lineage and leadership succession within the Fitii We family, stating that there has been no recognised successor to the late Nii Kwaku Fitii III, who passed away approximately seven years ago.

This clarification underscores the family’s position within the Gbese Paramouncy jurisdiction, for which the public was urged to disregard the recent allegations as false, fabricated and malicious attempts to tarnish the reputation of Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea.

They added that the former MP remains the legitimate Head of the Fitii We and continues to oversee all family affairs with the full authority vested in him.

Additionally, the Fitii We has called for respect and adherence to the truth in reporting on matters concerning their internal affairs and leadership structure.

Akufo-Addo supports establishment of African Monetary Fund

0
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has urged the African Union to see to the establishment of the three financial institutions on the continent.

According to the President, the creation of the African Central Bank, the African Investment Bank and the African Monetary Fund was vital to achieving financial stability in Africa.

President Akufo-Addo said this at the Sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU) in Accra on Sunday, July 21, 2024.

He made the point that the continent could create a more cohesive and effective financial framework that ensures resources are allocated where they are most needed.

President Akufo-Addo called for a consolidation of the financial landscape, as he had observed that institutions and initiatives operated in silos, leading to inefficiencies, duplication of efforts and suboptimal utilisation of resources.

“Central to the realisation of this vision is the establishment of the three African financial institutions; the African Central Bank, the African Investment Bank and the African Monetary Fund.

“The creation of these institutions is vital to achieving the financial stability and economic integration necessary for the successful implementation of Agenda 2063,” President Akufo-Addo said.

HARMONY

He explained that the African Central Bank will harmonise monetary policies and ensure currency stability across the continent, mitigating the risks associated with exchange rate volatility and creating a predictable economic environment that fosters investor confidence and facilitates intra-African trade.

He opined that a stable and unified monetary policy will reduce transaction costs and increase the efficiency of Africa’s financial systems.

Concurrently, the African Investment Bank, he said, will be instrumental in mobilising and allocating resources for large-scale development projects, providing the financial backbone for key infrastructure and development initiatives, and accelerating progress towards the highest durations of Agenda 2063.

Additionally, the African Monetary Fund will provide financial assistance to member states facing balance of payments issues and economic shocks, boosting monetary cooperation and stability among African nations by reducing dependency on external financial institutions and promoting sound fiscal and monetary policies.

“The African Monetary Fund will support macro-economic stability and entrench financial sovereignty across the continent,” he added.

AU MEETING

The sixth AU mid-year coordinating meeting, which ended last Sunday, aimed to harmonise the AU’s policies with those of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the Regional Mechanisms (RMs) and to deepen the Union’s integration agenda.

It deliberated on pressing issues of economic integration, interregional trade and operations as well as security on the continent.

The meeting, hosted by Ghana, had African Heads of States and Governments, the heads of the regional economic communities, the heads of the regional mechanisms and the members of the AU Commission, as well as continental stakeholders, taking part.

POLITICAL WILL

In his address, President Akufo-Addo urged other African presidents and the African Union Commission to demonstrate the political will and commitment necessary to drive the integration of the continent’s financial systems for the economic development of Africa.

“We must ensure that the legal frameworks and the requisite financial resources are in place to support the establishment and functioning of these institutions.

“The establishment of these financial institutions is not merely an administrative exercise; it is a bold and visionary step towards a unified, prosperous, and self-reliant Africa.

“It will be a testament to our collective resolve to take control of our financial destiny and build a future that reflects the true potential of our continent,” he said.

BACKGROUND

The legal instruments for the establishment of the African Investment Bank and the African Monetary Fund were adopted in 2009 and 2014, respectively.

However, ratification has become the stumbling block impeding the establishment of the institutions. None of the financial institutions has reached the requisite number of ratifications to enter into force.

At a consultative forum in 2023, it was also discussed that the insufficient funding for establishing the African Union Financial Institutions has been detrimental to the operationalization of the African Monetary Institutes, which is the first step towards the establishment of the African Central Bank.

Ebo Quansah inspires schoolchildren on 75th birthday and 50th anniversary

0
Mr. Ebo Quansah

It was a double dose of celebration for the venerable master of the pen, Ebo Quansah, as he celebrated his 75th birthday and his 50th anniversary in the inky fraternity.

The outspoken Ebo Quansah is 75 years old this month, and coincidentally, July marks exactly five decades since he gave his life to journalism.

On Saturday, July 20, 2024 people from far and near trooped to the Central Region, in the Ekumfi District, at a town called Ekwrafo, off the Winneba-Cape Coast road, some few metres from the district capital, Essakyir.

The day began with rains in Accra, and upon arriving in Ekwrafo, around 10:00 GMT, there was evidence of downpour.

Probably, it was a signal that the entire nation had received showers of blessings with some drizzling on the morning that Ebo Quansah chose to share his journey of life with schoolchildren, in his holy village of Ekwrafo, to inspire them.

DIGNITARIES

The Nifahemaa of the Ekumfi Traditional Area, Nana Esi Nsin VIII, led a delegation of chiefs and traditional rulers to the function.

Also in attendance were the former Sports Editor of the Ghanaian Times, Joe Aggrey; the former Sports Editor of the Daily Graphic, Ken Bediako and the former production manager of TV3, Gabriel Bosompem, who represented the President of the Ghana Journalists Association.

There was a three-man delegation led by Mr. Ahenkan Mensah, chairman of the Mens Fellowship of the Mount Zion Methodist Church, New Bortianor, Accra.

The event commenced when a Brass Band ushered the celebrant and some dignitaries into the K.T. Hammond Community Centre, which had seated Nananom, residents of the town and schoolchildren, including those from the Ahmadiyya School.

Madam Gifty Mantey set the tone for the event through a prayer, by singing from the Methodist Hymn Book numbered 10, ‘Now thank we all our God.”

The popular hymn of Thanksgiving has its last stanza as “All praise and thanks to God, the Father now be given. The son and him who reign with them in the highest heaven. The one eternal God whom heaven and earth adore. For thus it is now and shall be evermore.”

The chairman for the occasion was Mr. Joe Aggrey and the Master of Ceremonies was coach Bashiru Hayford (former coach of Asante Kotoko and current coach of Heart of Lions), who is also an indigene of Ekwrafo.

INSPIRATION

The celebrant, Ebo Quansah, told the story of his life in the local Fante language, which resonated well with the schoolchildren, for whom the event had been organised, on the Ekwrafo land.

He narrated how he became a bell boy because he was always late for school. In order to deal with that, the school tasked him with ringing the school bell, which means he had to be in school on time to perform that task or risk being punished.

He explained that he was always late because each morning he had to sell something to raise money for his parents. However, that situation, and others, did not discourage him from pursuing his dream.

Ebo Quansah shared the story of how he wrote his Common Entrance Examination and chose to attend Suhum Secondary Technical School (SUTESCO), though he earlier wanted West African Secondary School (WASS).

To him, the mere fact that the name of the School had West Africa in it, meant it was the best School, but upon visiting the campus to witness the situation, he had an instant change of mind.

Ebo Quansah, while encouraging the schoolchildren to follow their talents, shared his story of being a great football commentator back in SUTESCO, earning him the name Joe Lartey.

What brought him into journalism, he said, was the late Ghanaian leader, Dr. Busia, who inspired him, and so he wanted to be like him.

At a point in his speech, he asked the gathering to applaud his father for taking care of his education.

Ebo Quansah gained admission into the Ghana Institute of Journalism and later interned at Ghanaian Times, where he met Mr. Joe Aggrey.

He commended Mr. Aggrey for contributing meaningfully in his life, adding that Mr. Aggrey played a role in his gaining employment at the New Times Corporation, while in the school of journalism.

Ebo Quansah mentioned several advocacies he had embarked upon, including those that forced him into exile, but urged the schoolchildren to take their education seriously.

TREASURE

Mr. Joe Aggrey, in a closing remark, told the people of Ekwrafo that Ebo Quansah was a treasure to them.

He encouraged the schoolchildren to be of good behaviour to the benefit of the town. He indicated that his friend, Ebo, could organise the event in Accra, but to inspire the schoolchildren, he brought it to Ekwrafo, making key personalities visit the town.

The community presented a gift to him. It was a full kente cloth to thank him for his contributions to the Ekwrafo township.

After adorning him with the cloth over his nice white kaftan, Ebo Quansah told the schoolchildren how grateful he was, advising them that if they work hard, they may be rewarded with more than what he got.

PROUD

The Nifahemaa of the Ekumfi Traditional Area, Nana Esi Nsin VIII, said when she needed people to form a development committee, Ebo Quansah was recommended and his contributions have been enormous.

Of pride to her were the efforts of Ebo Quansah to bring the then President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, to the Akwanbo festival in September 2012.

There was a feast at the end of the symposium which celebrated Ebo Quansah’s 50 years in the media and the cutting of cake for his 75 years on earth.

Group Petitions NPP Over Demolition Of Financier’s House

0
NPP

Concerned Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have called upon the party leadership and the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, to intervene in the ongoing dispute between George Oti Bonsu and Abu Ramadan.

George Oti Bonsu is a prominent financier of the NPP, whilstAbu Ramadan is closely related to the wife of the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Samira Bawumia.

In two separate petitions dated July 10 and 20, 2024 addressed to the NPP national executives and the National Chief Imam respectively, the group requested for a peaceful resolution of the impasse and highlighted the pivotal roles played by Oti Bonsu and Abu Ramadan in the party.

The petition was signed by Reverend (Rtd.) Dickson Kankam Boadu, Chairman, and Diaspora Representative, Nana Ekow Annan Nyarko, First Vice Chairman, Francis Tosu Yao, Secretary, Zakaria Sukemana, Director of Operations and Madam Cynthia Akumoa Boateng, Women’s Commissioner.

The group sought the intervention of the National Chief Imamto quell the escalating tension between Oti Bonsu and Abu Ramadan.

Highlighting Oti Bonsu’s positive contributions to the Muslim community, including the construction of a mosque named after him at Asante-Akyem Agogo, the group appealed for the Chief Imam’s wisdom and influence in fostering peace.

Mr. Bonsu was said to have caused the construction of the said Mosque and has demonstrated his love and friendship to the Islamic faith through various donations of several Jilbabs, Sedajahe/Prayer mats, etc.

It was the humble plea of the group that the Chief Imam will be a peace broker in the matter.

The petition also expressed dismay over the prolonged silence from the party’s leadership regarding the conflict. The Concerned Members noted in the petition that though silence may sometimes be perceived as golden, it raises serious concerns among the foot soldiers and ordinary card-bearing members.

The group underscored the urgency of addressing the matter, particularly in the light of the upcoming general elections. They emphasised that the unresolved conflict could potentially undermine the party’s unity and support base needed for a successful re-election bid.

Background

The dispute reportedly stems from a demolition exercise on April 7, 2024, which affected several buildings owned by George Oti Bonsu in Adjiriganor, Accra. Mr Bonsu alleged that one Hajia Aisha Ahmed, who is also claiming ownership of the land, brought masked military men to demolish the ten-storey building on the land, totaling approximately US$3.5 million.
