APC pulls out of Edo election peace accord

0
APC

In a surprising turn of events, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has announced its decision not to sign the peace accord, just two hours before the scheduled signing ceremony.

This move is coming ahead of the September 21 governorship election, where the peace accord was intended to promote a peaceful and harmonious electoral process among contending political parties.

DAILY POST recalls that Governor Godwin Obaseki had earlier declared that his party Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, may not sign the peace accord because the party has lost faith in the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Addressing a press conference at the party secretariat, Emperor Jarret Tenebe said the party declined to sign the accord because two months after a police inspector Onuh Akor, who was the orderly to the candidate of the party, Sen Monday Okpebholo was shot and killed along Airport Road, nobody has been arrested and prosecuted.

He said instead of them being arrested, Governor Godwin Obaseki is allegedly keeping them in the government house.

Tenebe said, “This failure of the police has emboldened the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and his Peoples Democratic Party to attack members of our political party at rally grounds and in their private business premises ceaselessly.”

He claimed that the governor has made inflammatory statements that have undermined his position as the Chief Security Officer of the State.

He chronicled the various attacks the APC campaign team have suffered in different communities Akoko-Edo, Etsako Central, and Esan West local government area while mobilising supporters for the election.

Africa can achieve food security with some indigenous crop species -Lecturer

0
Social Food Insecurity

Dr Naalamle Amissah, Senior Lecturer, Department of Crop Science at the University of Ghana, says Africa can achieve food security while focusing on some indigenous crop
species that are rich in nutrients, and are better adapted to a climatic environment.

Dr Amissah who doubles as the West Africa Regional Hub Manager, Feed The Future Innovation Lab for Horticulture, said Africans had the capability to address their own challenges and achieve food security, such that it required more action and less discussion.
“We are aware of the issues and have insights into potential solutions, now, it is essential to translate these insights into concrete actions.

We must focus on implementing practical steps and making progress toward our goals,” she added. The Senior Lecturer was speaking at the 2024 Africa Food Systems Annual Summit which was organised by AGRA Ghana in partnership with the Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali, Rwanda. The forum brought together nearly 5000 diverse stakeholders, including world leaders, investors, academia, farmers’ organisations, and the private sector to collaborate in addressing the challenges regarding food systems across Africa and the globe.

Dr Amissah said it was essential to invest in research to improve yields, pest resistance, and nutritional value of indigenous crops, which included developing better farming practices and enhancing seed varieties. She said indigenous fruits and
vegetables in Africa played a crucial role in achieving food security, and that implementing climatesmart adaptation practices was essential for this goal.

“It is also important to address the management of agricultural byproducts effectively,” she added. She said they were exploring the conversion of palm kernel husks, palm fruit bunches, and rice husks into biochar to improve soil quality was ongoing, and that while various methods existed for soil enhancement, maintaining healthy soil was essential.

The Senior Lecturer added that inorganic fertilizers provided only short-term solutions and did not ensure long-term soil sustainability. Dr Amissah said incorporating organic fertilizers, restoring soil health, and advancing indigenous crop species, many of which were rich in essential vitamins such as C, A, and B were crucial steps.

“We compare ourselves with mothers, fathers and grandparents in the village, they are healthy, the things that they are able to achieve and do we cannot even do half” “I am optimistic that, similar to our proactive response during the COVID-19 pandemic where we
sought remedies like ginger and embraced unconventional treatments
such as inhaling neem vapor, there is a growing recognition of the importance of strengthening our immune system,” she stressed.

Mr Iddi Mohammed Faried, 2024 GoGettazAgripreneur Winner, called for the need to promote and ensure that the African Continental Free Trade Area happened to open borders for free trade between African Countries. “You know, currently we are at an African food forum so I believe that these are things that we really need to look at, because it’s limiting
the ability of us to market our products in other countries, there’s just few countries that are visa free,” he added.

He also called for increased publicity of opportunities and funding available for stakeholders and ensured they reached across all African Countries. Mr Faried said standardisation
processes in various countries needed to be made easier by engaging relevant bodies like the Foods and Drugs Authority and Ghana Standards Authority to try to reduce the duration of the processes involved.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced the release of GH¢1 billion to provide financial relief to investors affected by the revocation of fund management licenses in November 2019.

This move is part of a broader bailout program initiated by the government through the Ministry of Finance, which aims to support individuals whose investments were lost in the collapsed fund management companies.

According to a statement issued by SEC this week, the first tranche of the GH¢1.5 billion bailout package, valued at GH¢700 million, was made available in August 2024. The remaining funds GH¢400 million each are scheduled for disbursement in October and December 2024.

The statement further indicated that “The government is committed to ensuring that the affected investors receive the necessary support. This bailout will not only provide financial relief but also help restore confidence in the securities market.”

This recent release adds to the GH¢4.46 billion that has already been disbursed to settle 84,202 investor claims from defunct fund management companies. The SEC noted that approximately 82% of these claims have been fully settled, with 69,445 investors receiving their full payment.

“This decision, driven by humanitarian considerations, seeks to provide further relief to investors who have been waiting for a resolution since 2019,” the SEC statement read. The bailout targets clients of companies such as Blackshield Capital Management Limited (formerly Gold Coast Fund Management Limited) and Kron Capital Limited, who have faced significant financial difficulties since the collapse of these firms.

Under this release, investors with examined claims will receive either GH¢50,000 or 15% of their outstanding claims, whichever is higher. This payment structure is expected to fully settle the claims of 91% of the affected investors.

The funds will be managed by the Amalgamated Mutual Fund (AM Fund), a special purpose vehicle managed by GCB Capital Ltd.

In the coming days, AM Fund managers are expected to meet with investors to outline the procedures for accessing the released funds. They will also provide guidance on the option of leaving the claims in the AM Fund for further management.

The SEC reiterated its commitment to protecting investors and fostering transparency within the securities market.

“This bailout reflects the government’s dedication to addressing the impact of the 2019 fund management crisis and promoting stability in the financial sector,” the statement added.

Diddy ordered to pay $100M in default judgment for alleged sexual assault

A Michigan inmate has been granted $100 million in a default civil suit judgment filed against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs for an alleged 1997 sexual assault.

Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith, who filed the civil suit against Diddy, 54, in June, was granted the award at a hearing on Monday in a Lenawee County Circuit Court in Michigan, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY.

A default judgment is made when either party in a case fails to take action, either by not responding to a summons or failure to appear in court. According to the court documents, neither appearances nor answers have been filed on behalf of Diddy in the case.

“This man is a convicted felon and sexual predator, who has been sentenced on 14 counts of sexual assault and kidnapping over the last 26 years,” Diddy’s attorney Marc Agnifilo wrote in a statement to USA TODAY Tuesday. “His resume now includes committing a (sic) fraud on the court from prison, as Mr. Combs has never heard of him let alone been served with any lawsuit. Mr. Combs looks forward to having this judgment swiftly dismissed.”

Cardello-Smith, 51, is representing himself in the case. The inmate is serving up to 75 years for 2008 and 2019 first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping charges at Earnest C. Brooks Correctional Facility in Muskegon Heights, Michigan. Cardello-Smith was convicted on separate third-degree sexual conduct charges in 1998.

According to court documents, Cardello-Smith claimed he met Diddy at an after party at a Detroit Holiday Inn in June 1997. He drank with the music mogul and female guests, at first thinking the producer was a “really decent normal guy.” Cardello-Smith later joined Diddy and two women in private hotel room flanked by two guards, he alleged.

Cardello-Smith claimed he began to have sex with one of the women when he felt Diddy touch his buttocks. The interaction led Cardello-Smith to disengage, and when the rapper noticed, he allegedly offered Cardello-Smith a drink.

Cardello-Smith alleged he woke up to find himself bleeding and in pain. The inmate claims he filed a police report, later alleging the producer “paid Detroit and Monroe Police Officers to keep it hidden.”

My former assistants attacked me with ‘juju’ -Guru

Popular Rapper Guru, born Maradona Yeboah Adjei has opened up about a mysterious blackout he had on stage and how his former assistants plotted a spiritual attack on him.

Recounting the incident, Guru said everything seemed normal during his performance with excitement and high energy from the crowd.

Before his performance could reach its peak, he became stiff and silent, unable to speak or perform.

The DJ stopped the music, thinking he wanted to interact with the fans, but Guru was physically unable to continue.

“I went on stage to perform; I performed some four songs. It got to one of my hit songs and I went mute. I couldn’t talk and the DJ stopped the music thinking I wanted to interact with the fans.

“I don’t drink, so that wasn’t the cause. I drank several bottles of water, but nothing was working. I had to signal to my crew that something was wrong. We apologized to the fans and canceled the show,” Guru shared on Okukuseku with Emelia Brobbey.

He added that after the experience, he went to see a number of pastors, all of whom cautioned him that he was being attacked spiritually, but he disregarded their advice.

His condition deteriorated, and he began to get regular stomach aches and sore throats. He started having voice problems and went to seek medical help.

But it wasn’t until he went to see herbalists that the extent of the problem was revealed to him and he was healed.

According to Guru, the herbalists extracted metal objects, pins from his throat, and a stick with thorns and hooks from his stomach.

“I was there and one pastor called me and said someone is using juju on me. I was like how so I didn’t mind and was doing my own thing and the second warning came.

“So, it got to a time I was experiencing severe stomach pains. I couldn’t speak, I had issues with my throat to an extent that I went to see an herbalist. So, a little piece of wood like the size of my index finger was taken out from around my neck, also a hook just like the one used for fishing was also taken out from my stomach.

“If anybody had said it, I would have doubted but right before my eyes, I saw it,” he narrated.

He added that the spiritual attack which lasted for eight months took a toll on his health.

The musician claimed that during that time he lost weight, grew weaker, and even got into a vehicle accident with his Ford Explorer on the Aburi road.

After his hit song “Samba” was released, he finally made the decision to take a break and let go of his assistants and everyone in his inner circle.

North Korea fires multiple short-range ballistic missiles

North Korea fires ballistic missiles

North Korea has fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast, according to South Korea and Japan.

The launches took place at about 7:10am on Thursday (22:10 GMT, Wednesday), days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un promised to put his nuclear force fully ready for battle with its rivals.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected the missiles launched from North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, flying 360km (220 miles) before landing in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

“We strongly condemn North Korea’s missile launch which is a clear provocation that seriously threatens peace and stability on the Korean peninsula,” it said in a statement.

South Korea did not elaborate on the number of missiles, but Japan’s Ministry of Defence said at least two ballistic missiles were fired.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructed officials to ensure the safety of ships and aircraft. There were no reports of damage.

The nuclear envoys of South Korea, Japan and the United States talked by phone and called the launch a violation of United Nations resolutions, Seoul’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. They also pledged to respond to any North Korean provocations.

Peru Ex-president Alberto Fujimori dies at 86

Peru Ex-president Alberto Fujimori

Alberto Fujimori, the polarising former leader of Peru who was credited with stabilising the Latin American country’s economy before being jailed for human rights abuses, has died at the age of 86, his family has announced.

Fujimori’s daughter Keiko Fujimori said the former president had died following a long battle with cancer.

“We ask those who loved him to join us in praying for the eternal rest of his soul,” Keiko Fujimori said in a post on X on Wednesday. “Thank you for so much, Dad!”.

Fujimori, a former agricultural engineer and university professor, emerged from obscurity to place second in Peru’s 1990 election against establishment favourite Mario Vargas Llosa before beating his rival in a subsequent run-off vote.

During his decade-long presidency, Fujimori won plaudits for vanquishing hyperinflation, spurring economic growth and cracking down on the Maoist Shining Path rebel group.

But the son of Japanese immigrants also attracted criticism for consolidating power through undemocratic means and undermining Peru’s institutions and rule of law.

After temporarily shutting down Congress and the courts, Fujimori fled Peru in 2000 following the emergence of footage showing his intelligence chief bribing legislators.

From exile in Japan, where Fujimori held citizenship, he famously submitted his resignation by fax machine.

Fujimori was released from prison in December, after Peru’s top court reinstated a 2017 pardon granted by then-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on humanitarian grounds.

American becomes fastest woman to cycle globe

Lael Wilcox on her travels

A US “ultra-endurance” cyclist has claimed a new world record for fastest woman to circumnavigate the globe by bike. Lael Wilcox took 108 days, 12 hours and 12 minutes to cycle 29,169km (18,125 miles), starting and ending in Chicago. She beat the 2018 record held by Jenny Graham, from Scotland, whose journey took 124 days 11 hours.

Wilcox, 38, of Alaska, set off on 28 May, crossing 21 countries on four continents before arriving back in Chicago around 21:00 local time (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday.

She cycled up to 14 hours a day on her journey, which will now be verified for inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Experts estimate ultra-endurance cyclists can burn anywhere from 6,000 to 10,000 calories a day on their bikes.

Wilcox was the first female rider to win the TransAm, a 4,000-mile race across the length of the US. She has also set records in the Tour Divide, a gruelling race traversing the American continental divide along the Rocky Mountains.

While her latest record is billed as a “ride around the world”, Guinness rules only require riders to start and end in the same place, always travelling in the same direction.

A rider’s entire journey, including flights, ferries and public transit, must equal a total distance equivalent to 40,000km – the circumference of the Earth’s equator. The minimum distance travelled by bicycle must surpass 28,970 km.

After pushing off from Chicago, Wilcox headed for New York, where she boarded a flight to Portugal.

She then spent several weeks journeying north to Amsterdam, down through Germany, across the Alps, into the Balkans and eventually across Turkey to Georgia.

She then flew to Australia, riding from Perth along the southern coast to Brisbane where she hopped on a flight to New Zealand.

After covering both islands she flew to her hometown of Anchorage, pedalled along the Pacific coast to Los Angeles, then took Route 66 to Chicago.
