10 Tips to Beat Insomnia

0

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep. It also can cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. You may still feel tired when you wake up.

Most cases of insomnia are related to poor sleeping habits, depression, anxiety, lack of exercise, chronic illness or certain medication.

Symptoms may include difficulty falling or staying asleep and not feeling well-rested.

Treatment for insomnia consists of improving sleep habits, behaviour therapy and identifying and treating underlying causes. Sleeping pills may also be used, but should be monitored for side effects.

If you are suffering from insomnia, there are many steps you can take to change behaviors and lifestyle to help you get to sleep. Here are some tips for beating insomnia.

  1. Wake up at the same time each day. It is tempting to sleep late on weekends, especially if you have had poor sleep during the week. However, if you suffer from insomnia you should get up at the same time every day in order to train your body to wake at a consistent time.
  2. Eliminate alcohol and stimulants like nicotine and caffeine. The effects of caffeine can last for several hours, perhaps up to 24 hours, so the chances of it affecting sleep are significant. Caffeine may not only cause difficulty initiating sleep, but may also cause frequent awakenings. Alcohol may have a sedative effect for the first few hours following consumption, but it can then lead to frequent arousals and a non-restful night’s sleep. If you are on medications that act as stimulants, such as decongestants or asthma inhalers, ask your doctor when they should best be taken to help minimize any effect on sleep.
  3. Limit naps. While napping seems like a proper way to catch up on missed sleep, it is not always so. It is important to establish and maintain a regular sleep pattern and train oneself to associate sleep with cues like darkness and a consistent bedtime. Napping can affect the quality of nighttime sleep.
  4. Exercise regularly. Regular exercise can improve sleep quality and duration. However, exercising immediately before bedtime can have a stimulant effect on the body and should be avoided. Try to finish exercising at least three hours before you plan to retire for the night.
  5. Limit activities in bed. The bed is for sleeping and having sex and that’s it. If you suffer from insomnia, do not balance the checkbook, study, or make phone calls, for example, while in bed or even in the bedroom, and avoid watching television or listening to the radio. All these activities can increase alertness and make it difficult to fall asleep.
  6. Do not eat or drink right before going to bed. Eating a late dinner or snacking before going to bed can activate the digestive system and keep you up. If you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) or heartburn, it is even more important to avoid eating and drinking right before bed since this can make your symptoms worse. In addition, drinking a lot of fluids prior to bed can overwhelm the bladder, requiring frequent visits to the bathroom that disturb your sleep.
  7. Make your sleeping environment comfortable. Temperature, lighting, and noise should be controlled to make the bedroom conducive to falling (and staying) asleep. Your bed should feel comfortable and if you have a pet that sleeps in the room with you, consider having the pet sleep somewhere else if it tends to make noise in the night.
  8. Get all your worrying over with before you go to bed. If you find you lay in bed thinking about tomorrow, consider setting aside a period of time — perhaps after dinner — to review the day and to make plans for the next day. The goal is to avoid doing these things while trying to fall asleep. It is also useful to make a list of, say, work-related tasks for the next day before leaving work. That, at least, eliminates one set of concerns.
  9. Reduce stress. There are a number of relaxation therapies and stress reduction methods you may want to try to relax the mind and the body before going to bed. Examples include progressive muscle relaxation (perhaps with audio tapes), deep breathing techniques, imagery, meditation, and biofeedback.
  10. Consider participating in cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy helps some people with insomnia identify and correct inappropriate thoughts and beliefs that may contribute to insomnia. In addition, cognitive therapy can give you the proper information about sleep norms, age-related sleep changes, and help set reasonable sleep goals, among other things.

Feature: The Persistent Terrorism Of Galamsey …And Other Associated Health Hazards

Anis Haffar - The writer

This is the season—the much-awaited political season. The tirades before the storm proper are in full swing. The steamy campaigns have started with relish, and the usual seasonal promises abound in heavy doses. But, then, why are the pertinent issues affecting the environment so blatantly missing in the campaign speeches? Why are the elephants in the room not featured in those promises?

Dangerous waters & Kidney failuresDeadly experiences

A few months back, driving towards Obuasi from Kumasi, I bought some boiled corn but just as I was about to peel off the sheath, we got to the Oda river. A cursory look at the brownish noxious stream left a most horrifying imprint to this day. How on earth could the people in that area survive for long using – for cooking and drinking – such contaminated water teeming with cyanide and mercuric oxides? The appetite for the corn left me on the spot.

Dangerous waters & Kidney failures

A few years back, noticing and alarmed by a gaping sore on the wrist of a taxi driver I had hired from Kumasi airport to Krofrom, I queried him, “That’s a bad sore; what happened?” Without hesitation, he voluntarily pulled his long sleeve shirt up from the wrist to show me some hideous gangrenous sores that migrated all the way into his shoulders.

Recounting the devastation of the rivers around his cocoa farm, he had escaped from the village to now drive a taxi in Kumasi.

Ghana Water Company

It was lately reported that the Ghana Water Company had been on the verge of shutting down operations in the Ashanti region due to the activities of illegal mining. The cost involved in treating water, according to the company, was taking a toll on its finances.

An official was to announce on a radio that “We were first using aluminum sulphate which is called ‘Alum’ which after the process, you will get your clean water. But the Alum is not able to treat the water anymore which almost made us shut down our pumps,”

He said “We have to serve Ghana so we have bought polymer which is an advanced form of Alum and it is ten times more expensive than the alum. It is too expensive for us. If it gets to a time when the polymer is not able to treat the water, we may have to shut all our plants down which means no one gets water”.

He was to add that “When you mention galamsey I get scared. It is like an act of terrorism that some people are using to sabotage us. Sometimes I ask myself if the people involved do think about the people of the country or they want us all to die. The water bodies have been destroyed which is so worrying.”

Notes from medical doctors

From notes that I sent out to some medical friends, asking why our doctors were quiet about such dangers to the delicate human organs, like kidneys? one replied, “I gave a talk at KNUST about 7 years ago about the upsurge in non- communicable diseases in Ghana. I mentioned that our polluted water bodies were a constant threat to our well-being, especially the amplification of mercury on catfish species that appear to survive in galamsey muddy waters.”

He noted that, “Now, we read of the upsurge in kidney diseases among the youth especially around the galamsey areas. Although it is recognized that galamsey could not be the only cause of kidney failures yet to my mind, it is a major culprit.”

Another said that the medical doctors have been talking, but they strongly believe that they ‘refused’ to be heard, because of vested interests. “Hmmm … they are shouting oh … but they are so few and the herbalists are so many” and that the Ghana Medical Association have come out with many statements but as the saying goes, ‘There is none so deaf as the one refusing to hear nor so blind as the one refusing to see’ “.

Yet another response noted that, “After watching what happened to Prof Frimpong Boateng the doctors have adopted a policy of self-preservation noting that nothing will happen even if you shout from the highest roof tops!” They asked, “Why can’t the government of Ghana stop galamsey?”

Other deadly effects

A particular specialist noted that “In addition to the Galamsey, other deadly culprits are: 1. Bitters: There are about 50 different brands on sale in the country, I’m sure the FDA can’t tell us the active ingredients in any of these; 2. Sodium glutamate, widely used in cooking, including kenkey; 3. Changes in diet from large portions of pork consumed; 4. Plastics used in cooking causing cancers; and processed foods, etc.”

The kidney and the liver are responsible for getting rid of these toxins from our system, and dialysis machines are in very short supply in our hospitals, though one governmental V8 can get you some.

They added that “Young men in their twenties are on dialysis and dying from renal failure. The government has no plan or programs to deal with these because they DON’T give a damn!”

Another contributed that the herbal medicines being sold widely are without serious FDA certification of their efficacy!

PSG welcome debutants Girona to the Parc des Princes

Paris Saint-Germain begin their 2024-25 Champions League campaign against tournament debutants Girona at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night.

While PSG have won sixth Ligue 1 title in the last seven seasons, their Spanish counterparts surprised many by finishing third in La Liga in the previous campaign. Paris Saint-Germain are the only Ligue 1 team who boast a 100% record after four matches, after following up victories over Le Harve, Montpellier and Lille with a 3-1 comeback win at home to Brest last Saturday.

The Champions League has been the holy grail for PSG’s Qatari ownership since they took the reins back in 2011, but Europe’s most prestigious trophy in club football has painfully eluded them – losing the 2019-20 final to Bayern Munich is the closest that they have ever come to glory.

PSG will be keen to make a strong start to the newly-expanded Champions League and will be confident of success against Girona, as they head into Wednesday’s fixture having lost just one of their last 36 home games in the competition since the start of 2012-13 – a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in October 2020.

Both sides enter this contest on the back of contrasting domestic results, and with that in mind – along with the attacking quality that PSG possess – we are backing the hosts to outscore their opponents en route to a comfortable victory.

Man City kick-start campaign with enticing showdown against Inter Milan

Manchester City kick-start their 2024-25 Champions League campaign with an enticing showdown against Serie A champions Inter Milan at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

The two teams butt heads for the first time since the 2023 Champions League final – their only previous European encounter – when Rodri scored the decisive goal in a narrow 1-0 victory in Istanbul to help the Citizens complete a historic treble.

Erling Haaland, Manchester City

Man City are the only Premier League team who boast a 100% record after four matches, but their perfect start to the new campaign was put to the test by a cohesive, hard-working Brentford side on Saturday. But Haaland’s double turned the contest on its head just after the half-hour mark, increasing his impressive goal tally for the season to nine – breaking a new Premier League record in the process – as well as moving him onto 99 goals for Man City in just 103 games across all competitions.

Pep Guardiola‘s side have now extended their exceptional unbeaten record at the Etihad to 46 games (W39 D7) and are now gearing up for three more home fixtures across three different competitions in the space of just seven days, following up Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Inter with Premier League and EFL Cup games versus Arsenal and Watford respectively.

Man City will be keen to make a strong start in the newly-expanded Champions League and secure a statement win over Inter.

The Citizens have been conceding goals in recent weeks which bodes well for Inter, but Guardiola’s men have had Haaland to thank for banging in the goals and if his red-hot form in the final third continues on Wednesday, the hosts should ultimately fine a way to prevail.

Club Brugge, Borussia Dortmund faceoff in champs league new format

The new era of the Champions League with a new format is set to begin. In the first round, one of the most interesting games will be between Club Brugge and Borussia Dortmund. The game will take place at Jan Breydel Stadion in Brugge.

Last year’s Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund begin this year’s competition on the road against Club Brugge on Wednesday.

Borussia Dortmund coach, Nuri Sahin

Much has happened at Borussia Dortmund over the summer, with Nuri Sahin replacing Edin Terzic as head coach and the squad overhauled. Mats Hummels, Marco Reus and Niclas Füllkrug are all gone, while the likes of Waldemar Anton, Pascal Gross and Serhou Guirassy have arrived.

There has been some criticism of the way Dortmund have played under Sahin so far, but his team put in a strong performance with a 4-2 win over Heidenheim on Friday to move up to second place in the Bundesliga with seven points.

Their opponents, Club Brugge, have steadied the ship after a disappointing start to the season and have won their last four games, with their most recent victory a 3-0 away win over Kortrijk.

The two teams last met in the 2020 edition of the Champions League, where Dortmund won both matches 3-0.

Borussia Dortmund have more recent European pedigree than Club Brugge so it is no surprise that they start this match as the favourites.

Bottom-ranked Celtic and Slovan Bratislava clash today

The bottom-ranked side from pot three faces the top-ranked club from pot four on matchday one of the Champions League on Wednesday, when Celtic host Slovan Bratislava.

This will be the first meeting between the sides in over six decades, and Celtic will look for a repeat of their two 1-0 wins over Slovan in the Cup Winners’ Cup back in the 1960s.

Like most Scottish clubs in recent times, apart from Rangers’ run to the Europa League final in 2022, Celtic have seriously struggled to compete in Europe, especially in the Champions League.

Kyogo Furuhashi, Celtic

Their last five qualifications for the group stage all ended in immediate elimination, and they have not progressed past the last 16 since a quarter-final defeat to Real Madrid in 1980.

Starting poorly has been the big issue, as remarkably, Celtic have never won the opening game of a Champions League campaign, drawing two and losing 10.

Having won all five of their league games so far without conceding this season though, Brendan Rodgers‘s side should come into this winnable encounter with plenty of confidence.

Both sides have players in offensive areas capable of winning them the game in what could be an open, entertaining encounter.

Celtic have been perfect domestically so far, but their European adventures have often exposed their shortcoming quite brutally, and this will not be an easy match despite their opponent’s inexperience at this level.

Miners, Youth Clash Over Concession At Wamase …Car, Equipment Vandalised Amid Shootings

Small scale miners operating a concession at Wamase in the Akrofuom district have clashed with the youth of the community over mining rights.

Maurice Jonas Woode – DCE for Akrofuom

The youth, who operate what is locally called “Small China” are resisting deprivation of their livelihoods, following the seeming takeover of farmlands by the small scale miners.

Last month, a traditional ruler in the community, who is taking care of the lands in trust of the Akrokerri Stool, allegedly allocated the concession to the miners.

The said traditional ruler replaced Nana Kwadwo Nkrumah II, who was suspended as Odikro (caretaker chief) six months ago for allegedly resisting pressure by traditional authorities to sell out lands to miners at the expense of the livelihood of the residents.

Hon. Nicholas Wireko Brobbey – Assemblyman Wamase Electoral area

A group of machomen, claiming to have acquired the concession for small scale mining clashed with the youth, who use simple implements to mine, unlike the use of excavators by the small scale miners.

When the youth resisted the incursions of the machomen, they fired warning shots to scare them away, but the youth managed to overpower the machomen, breaking the windscreens of a vehicle with registration number GT-9055-W, which conveyed the alleged macho men to the area.

They had to abandon their vehicle and flee for their dear lives. The equipment of the miners were also vandalised by the youth, leading to the arrest and detention of the youth leader, Isaac Abu, alias Azigi, by the Bidiem police at Obuasi.

The deserted vehicle belonging to the machomen

The youth, who were incensed by the arrest of Azigi, threatened a reprisal attack, but the swift intervention of the Assemblyman for the area, Nicholas Wireko Brobbey, in collaboration with Maurice Jonas Woode, the District Chief Executive for Akrofuom, averted the mayhem.

Azigi has since been released to calm down the nerves of the youth.

Wireko Brobbey reports that calm has since been restored to the community as the miners are going about their small-scale mining activities, while the youth continue with their “Small China” operations to earn a living.

The youth have, however, threatened to resist any attempts from any quarters to take over their farmlands without their consent.

Saglemi: 2 Bidders Shortlisted For The Multi-Million Project

Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister for Works and Hounsing

Information reaching The Chronicle indicates that two bidders have been shortlisted, with one likely to be chosen in the coming days, to resume work on the Saglemi housing project in the Greater Accra Region.

Saglemi Housing project

This reporter was told by a source close to the Ministry of Works and Housing that the Transaction Advisors, Deloitte Ghana, did a yeoman’s job by meticulously evaluating all the bids that were submitted before settling on the two.

What is left now, according to the source, is for the government, through the Housing Ministry to select one of the two companies and negotiate with the owners for favourable terms to resume work on the uncompleted project.

The Chronicle understands that ten firms initially showed interest to partner the government to complete the project, which has been ‘abandoned’ for years due to the ongoing court case. However, out of the ten companies, only five officially submitted bids at the end of the process in July, this year.

Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the sector minister, had previously told reporters thatthe government was focused andwould be meticulous in the whole transaction.

The Saglemi Housing Project was initiated with a $200 million contract to construct 5,000 affordable housing units.

However, by January 2017, only 1,506 units had been completed or in various stages of completion, despite $197 million allegedly paid to contractors.

Akrokerri Small Scale Miners defend Queenmother, Gyasehene

Akwasi Adom talking to the media

Members of the Akrokerri Small Scale Miners Association in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti region have vehemently defended the Queenmother, Nana Serwaa Bruwaa II and the Gyasehene Nana Kofi Berchie, of the allegation that they have superintended over galamsey activities in the town.

One of the pits that leads to the underground tunnel

At a crowded press conference at Akrokerri to react to “The Chronicle’s lead story of Wednesday September 11, 2024 – headlined ‘Akrokerri Hard Hit By Galamsey’, the miners said the two traditional leaders have not played any negative role as far as the activities of the youth in the town are concerned.

They alluded that they have rather attended to their roles as traditional leaders, which they have performed to perfection.

“Nana Serwaa Bruwaa II is not into galamsey. It is our considered opinion that those who do not see eye-to-eye with her as far as Akrokerri chieftaincy issues are concerned want to drag her name in the mud.” they said.

Speaking through their spokesperson, Mr. Isaak Ibn Ibrahim, the miners said it is unfortunate that the newspaper referred to them as galamseyers, claiming they are recognised Small Scale Miners who operate from an old underground tunnel at the outskirts of the town.

“We are not galamseyers. Our operations do not disturb any river body or any forest reserve and as a result the entire youth of the town get their daily bread from the mine”, they argued.

The spokesperson said from their own resources the miners have provided street bulbs to the Bronikrom community and they are also in the process of putting up a befitting place of convenience for the Bronikrom people as well.

Isaak Ibn Ibrahim (sitting middle) addressing the press

The spokesperson passionately appealed to the government to take note of the fact that the entire Akrokerri community is healthy and sound because of the existence of the mine and for that matter any propaganda from any quarters aimed at stopping their operations should be nipped in the bud.

Mr. Akwasi Adom, the Fomena Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on his part said the old tunnel from where the Small Scale Miners operate has been in existence several years ago.

He maintained that the Akrokerri mine does not disturb any river body or forest reserve and for that matter the youth should be allowed to mine unprovoked.

Rotary Club of Kumasi rolls out $70k project in 12 schools

The Rotary Club of Kumasi has commenced the construction of sanitary facilities in 12 selected schools in the Ashanti Region, in line with Rotary International’s focus on water and sanitation.

The project, worth $70,000 includes the provision of 12 boreholes and 75 micro flush toilets for the beneficiary schools in Kumasi and Obuasi.

A symbolic sod-cutting ceremony was held at Brofoyedru D/A Primary School to kick-start the project to address water and sanitation challenges facing the schools.

Over the years, pupils and teachers of Brofoyedru Primary School had to cross the main street linking the school and the community to access potable drinking water and attend to nature’s call, hampering teaching and learning in the school.

Mr Asare Bediako, Headmaster of the school, speaking at the ceremony, commended the Rotary Club of Kumasi and their partners for coming to their aid with the provision of a washroom facility and a borehole.

The Rotary club of Kumasi and the Calgary Stampede Rotary Club of Canada are funding the project.

Nana Afia Osei Asamoah, President of the Club, said the provision of water and sanitation facilities was one of the seven key areas of Rotary International’s engagement with communities worldwide, under the theme: “Magic of Rotary” for the 2024/25 Rotary year.

She said they were motivated by a request from the authorities of the school to come to their aid to fix the challenges they were grappling with.

“As a club, we are always willing to support humanity. We decided to offer support to the school after they submitted their request, which was consistent with the objectives of rotary, such as provision of WASH facilities, economic empowerment and child health, the President noted.

The project, according to her, would be completed and handed over to the authorities of the school within one year.

Western NDC ready for today’s demo

0
Joseph Nelson (middle) Regional Secretary addressing the presser

The Western Regional Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) say they are expecting a massive turnout for the ‘Enough is Enough” demonstration scheduled for Sekondi-Takoradi this morning.

Addressing a press conference ahead of the D-day, the party said the convening point for the demonstration is Takoradi Shopping Mall, where they would march through to Effiakuma Number 9, towards Sekondi and end up at the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Sekondi, to present their petition.

The demonstration, which is being undertaken by the party in all sixteen regions across the country, is geared towards compelling the Electoral Commission (EC) to pander to the party’s request, for the former to allow the independent electoral body to audit the Voter Register.

Joseph Nelson, Regional Secretary of the party, addressing the conference, indicated the party’s Members of Parliament (MP) would take part in the demonstration. He explained that the demonstration has become necessary following the EC’s intransigent position not to allow the voters register to be audited.

The Electoral Commission (EC) recently exhibited the provisional voters register for the 2024 general elections after it embarked on a series of exercises that included limited registration, voter transfer and opened application for proxy among others.

The exercise led to the NDC party raising issues with the Voters Register. The party insisted that a total of 243,540 previous transfers illegally have been added to 2024 transfers, including repetition of illegally transferred names.

According to the party 15,000+ unidentified voter transfer paths (due to fake registration of voters) -3,957 voters in 2023 register, but deleted from 2024 provisional register due to transfer were found.

Also 2,094 voters transferred to different Polling Stations, but not found in the Absentee Voter List as required by law, and that aside, corrupt files not showing names and photos of the registered voters.

The party drew the attention of the EC and requested for a meeting to see to an amicable resolution.

At the said meeting, NDC made request for an independent forensic audit of the provisional voter register, Re-exhibition of the register and an updated register.

The Regional Secretary, Joseph Nelson, flanked by other executives like Nana Toku, Regional Chairman, Samuel Gbolu, Vice Chairman amongst others, explained it was upon the basis of the above that the NDC was demonstrating across all the sixteen regions.

He consequently called on all Ghanaians who have the democracy and the peace of Ghana at heart to join the Tuesday 17th of September 2024 for a peaceful protest to demand for free, fair and transparent elections dubbed ‘Enough is Enough Demonstration’.

“We want to send a strong message to the EC that the NDC will not sit idly by for them to manipulate election 2024 to our disadvantage.

“To that end, Nelson assured every preparation has been made to ensure that “we turn out in our numbers to make the protest a very successful one. We wish, therefore, to invite you, our friends in the media to join us on this journey tomorrow”.

Their Elections, Our Elections

0
Ambassador Kwame Tenkorang

On May 27, 2024, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak announced general elections to be held in the country. In accordance with the UK political system, a PM can call general elections at any time in his tenure and for several reasons. This could be to test his and the ruling party’s popularity, or consolidate the party’s position in power.

Once he made the call, the doors opened for electioneering to begin.

All that ended in six weeks. The elections were held on 4th July, 2024. By the next day, a new Prime Minister was already in office in a seamless transition. The beauty was in the changeover. Early morning on the 5th, the new PM, Keir Stammer was already operating from No. 10 Downing Street, meeting and announcing new Cabinet Ministers of his government.

It was impressive that everybody understood their role in the big picture. There was no ballot snatching; no electoral body bantering with political parties; no registration and re-registration of voters; no

bloody fights, no macho men wielding machetes. No incidents were recorded of registered voters who were unable to find their names at the polling stations where they had registered and expected to vote.

In all this, everything worked according to the established rules of engagement and within 24 hours of the vote, the new PM was in office. There was no transition period, therefore no joint transition committee. There was no elaborate Swearing-In, to which half the world leaders are invited to participate in what should reasonably be a one hour event.

All that matters is that Keir Stammer is Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, having been voted into office by the people.

In sharp contrast, people should cast their minds to the dear Republic of Ghana, where elections are either “all-die-be-die” or “boot-for-boot”, ”do or die” or, generally referred to in war and doomsday language.

Elections in Ghana have variously been compared to and threatened to be like the war in Afghanistan or the Arab Spring. The whole mindset about elections is so wrong that one would think it is such a nasty chore imposed on the nation by an irritating stepmother.

To start with, the 1992 Constitution mandates Presidential and Parliamentary elections every FOUR years. One would reason that the period of elections would center around just before the established date for the elections. Not so Ghana. Every day of the 4-year cycle is for electioneering.

How else can one explain that a party wins an election and straight away starts thinking about how to win the next election which is four years away. In the process, elections become an end in themselves, instead of providing an opportunity for service to the people now.

Consider the processes Ghanaians go through in order to vote. People have to get a Ghana Card, or assemble two registered voters to travel the distance to the district office of the Electoral Commission in order to register to vote.

In summary, one goes through any number of processes: registration, exhibition and verification of register, etc. Then comes the loud presence of an Electoral Commission that flaunts its ‘independence’ more than its integrity and fairness. A whole constituency can be barred from the electoral process by administrative bungling without redress.

Political campaigns in Ghana are from another world, are big time events and expensive, not like the town hall meeting types elsewhere. It is at these rallies that political actors usually pep up or incite their plebeian following into frenzy for anything goes. Are stories of vote buying, cash filled envelopes, bɛntoa, kako, television sets, etc all true?

When all’s done and an election has been conducted then the other shenanigans of beating/shooting to kill opponents, counting, collation of votes and the Oscar type announcement of results.

This is followed by a transition period of one month, normally. Some people refer to this transition period as an opportunity to hide files and conceal evidence, while the acrimony of the election festers into the transition with seizures of cars, public spaces and in many other areas/sectors subject to handing over.

Now, comes the Swearing-In of the new Parliament, just before the President is sworn in. The President must swear before Parliament. That should be a simple oath swearing event that shouldn’t last more than an hour.

There is a precedent in support of this assertion. Former President John Dramani Mahama was sworn into office the first time in the parliamentary chamber on 24th July 2012, upon the death of the late President Atta Mills. That was so simple and it harms no one to institutionalize it for its simplicity. No foreign guests to create a diplomatic nightmare, minimum expenditure with the same result.

Any observer from the UK who happens to see the way we do things about elections here will conclude that we make so much capital out of our elections to the detriment of governance, service to our people and development.

What is your view?
