Ghana is full of scandals -Togbe Afede

0
Togbe Afede XIV

The Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, is livid about the state of Ghana’s economy, especially the ever-increasing cost of living and the all-time record indebtedness, resulting from reckless borrowing.

According to him, apart from the poor nature of the economy, the country is also full of scandals. “It is so incredible that for a small country, almost every day there is something new. From the PDS scandal involving the Electricity Company of Ghana, the Ameri scandal and the very bad scandal surrounding the National Cathedral project, to judgement debts that we do not deserve to pay and the list goes on,” he said.

Togbe Afede XIV was speaking at the 2024 Asogli Te Za Grand Durbar held in Ho recently.

He also told his subjects that “Our country is heavily indebted. The sad part is that we have accumulated so much debt, yet we lack so much and one wonders where all the money borrowed has gone to.

‘We are suffering from the effects of high price increases. Inflation is very high in our country, the calculated rate is softening recently only because of prior massive price increases – the base effect”.

He said though the country is well-endowed, it is often vulnerable to external economic variables. Inflation has eaten so deep into the core of the economy that “Our cedi knows only one direction, and that is, depreciation.

“From a rate of GHc4 to the dollar about eight years ago, it is now more than GHc16 to the dollar, and that has been an important factor in the high inflation and the suffering of our people.”

Togbe Afede XIV added that, “So many of our young compatriots cannot get jobs, many years after school. The consequence has been growing frustration among our youth, many of whom are looking for opportunities to exit our country.

“We have also seen an increase in strikes and demonstrations, all because our citizens are not happy.”

He said most depressing is the rise in the incidence of suicide cases. “According to reports, eighty-one (81) Ghanaians succeeded in taking their own lives, out of about 543, who had attempted during the first half of this year alone.

“Compared to the record of the whole of last year, when forty-eight (48) people killed themselves, one can sense the growing desperation among our people.”

Togbe Afede XIV is sad that well-paid and very well-to-do Public Servants are monopolising scholarships that should be going to the poor.

“This kind of thing cannot be tolerated in any serious country. Where is justice when the rich go for what is intended for the poor, and where is the freedom when most people are afraid to talk about these matters?”

He said it is common knowledge that public officials in some institutions deposit state funds in private banks and receive kickbacks. Later, the banks lend the funds to government and invest in Treasury Bills.

“Also, very recently, we heard about this story of Agyapadie, quite worrying because it talks about a plot by a few people to seize control of our economy while trying to undermine other Ghanaians who also deserve the opportunities that this country has to offer.

“Many of the people who do the wrong things against us go to church and occupy the front rows and yet steal our monies. Again, by the good grace of God, we should be able to recognise all of these people in their disguise.”

Togbe Afede XIV added that, “We are victims of bad policies and decisions by our fiscal and momentary authorities. Recently, we all became aware of the Bank of Ghana putting up a head office-building in which they invested more than US$250 million of our money – 0.35 % of our GDP. That should not have been happening in any serious country.”

He noted that the Bank of Ghana is an organisation that also rewards its staff excessively while they are unable to achieve the price stability or the financial sector stability that are their mandates.

“In 2023, the average employee cost the bank over GHc73,000 per month, not a year! So, we can see the unfairness and, therefore, the lack of justice in our country.”

Togbe Afede XIV was puzzled by the reported purchase of spare parts by the ambulance service. “Recently, we heard about the importation of about US$34 million or so worth of spare parts to back US$59 million worth of ambulance purchases.

“I don’t know how many of us buy brand new cars and invest a lot of money in spare parts in advance. But this is happening in our country.”

He does not understand why “the US$35 million Komenda Sugar Factory is being considered for leasing at US$1 million per year. These certainly are not good decisions for our country. Very sad indeed.”

Australian senator censured for heckling King

Senator Lidia Thorpe made her protest in Canberra's Great Hall of Parliament last month

Australian lawmakers have voted to censure an Aboriginal senator who heckled King Charles during his visit to Canberra last month, to express their “profound disapproval” of her protest.

Lidia Thorpe shouted “you are not my King” and “this is not your land” shortly after the King addressed the Great Hall of Parliament, in an effort to highlight the impacts of British colonisation.

The Senate’s censure, which passed 46-12, described Thorpe’s actions as “disrespectful and disruptive” and said they should disqualify her from representing the chamber as a member of any delegation.

A censure motion is politically symbolic but carries no constitutional or legal weight.

Shortly after the Senate vote on Monday, Thorpe told reporters she had been denied her right to respond in the chamber due to a flight delay.

“The British Crown committed heinous crimes against the first peoples of this country… I will not be silent,” the independent senator said.

Her protest last month drew immediate ire from across the political aisle, as well as from some prominent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders.

But it also drew praise from some activists who argued that it highlighted the plight of Australia’s first inhabitants, who endured colonial violence and still face acute disadvantages in terms of health, wealth, education, and life expectancy compared to non-Indigenous Australians.

Thorpe is among those who have advocated for a treaty between Australia’s government and its first inhabitants.

Unlike New Zealand and other former British colonies, a treaty with Indigenous peoples in Australia was never established. Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people emphasise that they never ceded their sovereignty or land to the Crown.

Despite the protest, the King was warmly greeted by Australian crowds during his five-day tour alongside Queen Camilla.

Mali wins $160m in gold mining dispute after detaining British businessman

An Australian mining company, Resolute Mining, says it will pay Mali’s military government $160m (£126m) to settle a tax dispute, after the company’s British boss and two other staff were unexpectedly detained 10 days ago.

Reports say Terry Holohan and his colleagues were arrested while travelling to the capital city, Bamako, for what they were expecting to be routine negotiations.

Resolute, which owns a gold mine in Mali, said on Sunday it would pay $80m immediately from existing cash reserves, and the rest in the coming months.

Mali is one of Africa’s top gold producers.

It is is seeking to extract a greater share of income from foreign operators in the sector.

It is not yet clear when the three Resolute employees will be released.

Part of the conditions for their release were that they must sign the memorandum of understanding and complete the initial payment, according to a report by the French broadcaster RFI.

Mali’s military rulers detained the three Resolute executives on charges of forgery and damaging public property, seen as an attempt to blackmail the Australian company amid an ongoing state crackdown on foreign – mostly Western – mining companies in the West African country.

Since taking power in a coup in 2021, Mali’s junta has sought to reconfigure its political and trade relationships with international partners.

Last year, President Col Assimi Goïta signed into law a new mining code increasing the maximum stake for state and local investors from 20% to 35%.

PM Starmer calls for ‘strong’ UK-China relationship

UK PM Keir Starmer Chinese President Xi Jinping

Sir Keir Starmer has met President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Brazil emphasising the importance of a “strong UK-China relationship” for both countries.

The meeting was the first time a UK prime minister has met the Chinese president in person since 2018, following a recent souring in relations.

Sir Keir raised the case of the detained Hong Kong pro-democracy activist, Jimmy Lai, saying he was concerned about reports of a “deterioration” in his health.

The PM also signalled a desire for greater business co-operation, particularly on “areas of mutual cooperation” such as international stability, climate change and economic growth.

Sir Keir met President Xi on the fringes of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, according to the Press Association news agency.

Speaking at the start of the meeting, the PM said: “We want our relations to be consistent, durable, respectful, as we have agreed, avoid surprises where possible.”

He added: “The UK will be a predictable, consistent, sovereign actor committed to the rule of law.”

Sir Keir also proposed a full bilateral meeting in Beijing or London.

Speaking through a translator, Mr Xi told Sir Keir that the two countries should commit to mutual respect and openess, saying: “China and the UK have broad space for co-operation across various domains, including trade, investment, clean energy, financial services, healthcare and improving our peoples’ well-being.”

In August, the pair spoke over the phone after Labour’s election victory the previous month, but they have not yet met in person.

Biden to allow Ukraine to use US weapons inside Russia

0
Trump has a history of praising Vladimir Putin

Outgoing United States President Joe Biden will allow Ukraine to use US-provided weapons to strike inside Russia, various news outlets, including Reuters, the Associated Press and the New York Times, have reported.

Three sources, familiar with the matter, including two US officials, told Reuters on Sunday that Ukraine plans to carry out long-range attacks using the weapons in the coming days.

As France and the UK weigh up whether to follow America’s decision on missiles, one Ukrainian MP has urged the countries to go a step further and put boots on the ground.

“I think the next discussion should be about sending troops to Ukraine,” Oleksiy Goncharenko, the MP for Odesa, told Newsday.

United Russia MP, Maria Butina, tells the BBC that the US is using Ukraine and, in the process, further deepening the conflict with Russia.

The world doesn’t need “another escalation,” she adds, “another step to the, potentially, the third world war.”

“And while the United States is playing their little games in politics, they are actually pushing the world to a very dangerous red line,” Butina says.

She adds that it’s an attempt to “escalate as much as possible so Trump is not able to keep the promise to stop the war.”

Donald Trump has yet to offer his thoughts on Joe Biden’s change of heart. A key question, of course, is whether the President-elect would reverse the decision once he enters office on 20 January next year.

Trump has a history of praising Vladimir Putin and has been a vocal critic about the level of US aid going to Kyiv. He’s also claimed he’d end the war in a day without explaining how.

Tips and Tricks to Solve Migraine

0

Living with migraines can be tricky. You don’t know when they’ll strike or how you’ll get through your day when they do. While you can’t always stop them completely, there are things you can do to make a difference.

Sunglasses for Light Sensitivity

Bright lights are everywhere, and they tend to trigger many people’s migraines. If you have photophobia, or light sensitivity, natural and artificial lights may cause head pain or make it worse.

To manage this risk, you might want to wear sunglasses inside and outside. These can block the harsh light as well as blue-tinted light, which is the most painful type of artificial light, from your eyes.

You may also want to try light bulbs that give off green light. This is the only color that hasn’t been shown to make head pain worse.

Another good idea is to turn the brightness down on your devices. Using subtle light from your phone or computer may be a better way to avoid a migraine.

While you won’t always be able to avoid bright lights, you can stay away from them as much as possible. If you work in an area with bright artificial lights, sit closer to a window with natural light that isn’t as glaring. Stay away from flickering light sources and surfaces that glare.

Stress

Stress triggers more than 70% of people with migraines. Since you can’t make stress go away, you need to focus on managing it as well and as quickly as possible. Have a plan for what you’ll do in demanding situations — whether it’s at work, in your personal life, or while you’re doing chores or errands — so you’re not caught off guard.

Can you remove yourself from the situation and calm down before you go back? Take some deep breaths when you notice you’re feeling stressed? Call a friend or get a quick workout to shed the stress ASAP? You want to have several anti-stress strategies handy so you can choose what works in the moment.

It’s also a good idea to sort your priorities to stop stress before it starts. Manage your time at work or school so that you enter each day with a plan.

Set Your Schedule

Migraines might be less likely when you keep things consistent. If you switch up your routine, you’re more likely to have a bad headache. For this reason, it’s important to keep a similar plan for each day. Maintain the same sleep schedule, exercise times, and keep your diet consistently healthy. You may also want to make a treatment routine, so that you take any medication or therapies at the same time each day.

Banish Strong Odors

Strong smells from things like food and cologne might trigger your head pain. It’s not always easy to escape these scents, so it’s important to be ready to adapt to the environment you’re in.

Keep a bag of coffee beans (if the scent of coffee doesn’t bother you) near you. Coffee beans neutralize odors, so a quick whiff might stop a migraine in its tracks.

You can also use a peppermint balm to clear the air around you. You can dab some under your nose to block strong smells.

It’s also a good idea to talk about your scent triggers. Ask your family and friends to go easy on the perfume and other scents when they’re around you. Explaining what can be migraine triggers gives them a simple way to offer support.

Check Your Diet

Trigger foods could cause your migraines. Everyone is sensitive to different foods, so it’s important to track what you eat and how your body responds to it. Keep a food diary to log your meals and journal how you feel after. This will help you learn what is safe and what to avoid. You’ll still need to get all the nutrients your body needs, so you may want to consult with a registered dietitian if you find you have a lot of trigger foods.

Be Ready if Aura Strikes

Some people with migraines have aura before or during their head pain. While there’s no proven way to prevent aura, you can calm the side effects down once it starts. When you first feel symptoms, go to a dark and quiet room. Take a nap or rest for a bit. You may also want to use a cool rag or ice pack on your forehead or the back of your neck. Hydration may also help, so be sure you drink enough water or get it from foods.
