PDP Calls Ondo Election ‘A Sham’

PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the conduct of the Ondo State governorship election on Saturday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling it ‘a sham’.

The opposition party, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Sunday, said it is reviewing the outcome of the poll.

According to INEC’s declaration, PDP’s candidate Agboola Ajayi came a distant second with a total votes of 117,845 behind the winner, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who polled 366,781 votes.

The opposition party in its statement, described the election as the worst ever to be conducted by INEC.

“The Peoples Democratic Party and indeed all lovers of democracy in Nigeria and across the world have just witnessed the worst election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The November 16, 2024 Governorship election in Ondo State runs short of all expectations and requirements of a free, fair and credible election as it witnessed the height of electoral swindle, deceit and manipulation by the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the statement read in part.

PDP also alleged widespread of vote buying by the APC which it said was rampant because the ruling party impoverished Nigerians.

Your rule is the most corrupt, apologize to Nigerians –Presidency slams Obasanjo

0
Former President Obasanjo

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Public Communication and Orientation, Sunday Dare, has hit out at former President Olusegun Obasanjo over a recent remark where he described President Bola Tinubu as ‘baba-go slow.’

Obasanjo had made the remark while delivering a keynote address at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum, Yale University, New Haven Connecticut, USA.

He said the situation in Nigeria was bad as the world could see and understand.

Reacting, Dare, in a lengthy post on X on Monday, insisted that Obasanjo ran for Presidency on record as the most corrupt during his regime.

He also called on the former president to apologize to Nigerians, adding that he has lost any moral right to condemn any government.

Dare also claimed that democracy suffered mortal wounds under Obasanjo’s watch.

“Former President Obasanjo is a man with a tremendous capacity for mischief and Nigerians know it. So is his descent into muddling facts, forgetting that he ran a Presidency on record as the most corrupt. His recent diatribe at Yale University lacks sincerity,” Dare wrote.

“It is actually laughable that Obasanjo’s pretentiousness about fighting corruption is not cutting any ice in the eyes of the general public.

“Democracy suffered mortal wounds under his watch only capped by his murderous rage for an ill-fated 3rd term. Successive administrations struggled to clean up the mess Obasanjo left behind, which President Tinubu is now making progress with. Obasanjo has lost any moral right to condemn any government. He should apologise to Nigerians for not laying the foundational infrastructure Nigeria needed to advance.”

Nigerians intensify campaign to strip president of powers over INEC, judiciary

0
Nigerians campaign to strip president of powers

Since last month when a new national coalition, Save Democracy Mega Alliance 2027 (SDMA’27), launched a campaign to amend Nigeria’s constitution to remove the President’s authority over the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and state governors’ power over the State Independent Electoral Commissions, SIECs, quite a number of Nigerians have applauded the move.

The coalition is also pushing for amendment in the constitution to equally remove the president’s powers over the judiciary, particularly in the appointment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, as well as that of the Chief Judge of State in the case of state governors.

Before the group launched the campaign, there had been calls from several quarters to remove the powers to appoint the heads of the electoral body and judicial arm of the government from the president.

The argument behind the call is that such practice does not guarantee the full independence of both the electoral body and the judiciary because he who pays the piper dictates the tune.

The coalition is also arguing along the same line as it insisted that removing such powers from the president would prevent executive influence in the electoral and judicial systems.

Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, recently, the coalition’s spokesperson, Tony Akeni Le Moin, announced that the coalition would formally launch the campaign across all states, culminating in a “boot camp” finale in Abuja.

He tied the SDMA’27’s focus on two main constitutional amendments, stripping the president and governors of their powers to appoint INEC, SIEC, and judiciary heads and transferring these responsibilities to a body of non-partisan and integrity-vetted Nigerians.

The coalition which has been endorsed by prominent leaders and pro-democracy groups across the country, has also garnered support from Professor Pat Utomi, a well-respected political economist.

Utomi, who has described the movement as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s democracy since 1999, equally referenced the Justice Uwais Electoral Reform report as the most appropriate point to start from.

According to him, the report also recommended executive appointment reforms for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the judiciary, as insulating the institutions from executive influence would foster fair elections and improve governance.

Ada District ECG bemoans network interference

0
Ada District Manager of ECG, Ing Louis Harlley Nutsugah

The Ada District of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Limited has bemoaned the constant unauthorised involvement of certain individuals who keep accessing the electricity distribution network.
This, the District says, ends up causing faults and outages, as well as damage to fuses and transformers, thereby affecting the power supply to consumers.

The District has, therefore, cautioned the public to avoid such interference as it could result in electrocution and damage to properties.
In a telephone conversation with The Chronicle, the Ada District Manager of ECG, Ing Louis Harlley Nutsugah said “We have informed the Assembly Members and other opinion leaders in the various communities to help us (ECG) to advise their people to stop such interference.”
He added that the company was on the lookout to get any such persons and prosecute them for unauthorised entry to our network.

He explained that should this continue to happen, customers would not have a supply for a while, as the company would have to first spend resources to replace the damaged equipment.
Accordingly, he appealed for restraint when such situations occur and not to call electricians and other technicians to fix outage problems.

He said “it is our commitment to ensure power supply and to fix faults as soon as possible. However, there are times when the faults team could be working at one place and so cannot immediately show up at another place.

“We also have a distance to be covered before getting to customers, so we are pleading for restraint and patience and not asking technicians to get into the network to supposedly fix problems.”

Ing Alfred Owusu, who is the District Engineer overseeing the Communities under the ECG Ada District also indicated that in some of the instances, fuses are changed by these unauthorised persons, consequently causing damages to ECG’s transformers because of the loading of more fuses.

Customers were encouraged to pay their bills promptly and avoid piling up debts which eventually become difficult for them to pay.

NDC apologises to JAK over wheelchair comment

0
NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rendered an unqualified apology to former President John Agyekum Kuffour over an unsavoury remark by Mr Dela Edem.

According to the National Communications Bureau of the party, NDC accords utmost respect to the elderly in society and honours distinguished Statesmen like the former president.

As a result, the party said it was right that Dela Edem has duly retracted his statement and rendered an unqualified apology to the elderly Statesman.

The party, in a statement signed by National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, added its voice to the apology that has been rendered and hoped that the retraction and admission of guilt would bring closure to the matter.

Mr Sammy Gyamfi sounded a word of caution to all communicators of the party to be circumspect with their pronouncements and concentrate on the party’s core message.

“The party strongly advises all communicators to remain focused on propagating the transformational policies of the visionary nation-builder, H.E. John Dramani Mahama and the NDC for a resounding victory on December 7, 2024”, the statement said.

A member of the NDC communication team, Dela Edem, at a recent public event, unleashed a blistering attack on former president John Agyekum Kuffour.

Mr Edem’s comment, which basically touched on Mr Kuffour’s present physical condition which has compelled him to use a wheelchair, sparked huge controversy.

Asante Youth bare teeth at Dela Edem for attacking Kufuor

0
Dela Edem

The Concerned Youth of Asanteman has reprimanded Mr Dela Edem, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team for unwarranted attacks on former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Mr Edem has inferred that the former president’s confinement to a wheelchair is due to his “evil deeds” when he was the President of Ghana.

Speaking on behalf of the group at a press conference in Kumasi yesterday, Nana Agyenim Boateng, popularly known as Gyataba, noted that the Asante Youth view these derogatory remarks as malicious accusations that disregard basic human decency.

He noted that John Agyekum Kufuor is an extraordinary Statesman who has served this nation with distinction and commands colossal respect internationally.

According to Gyataba, ever since the derogative remarks were made by Mr. Edem, neither former President John Mahama nor any other party official have publicly dissociated themselves from it – an indication that Mr. Mahama and his party are in tacit support of the attack.

Gyataba further noted that the Concerned Asante Youth are not oblivious to the NDC’s longstanding tradition of undermining the “Asante People” and emphasised that the current development is part of the “grand agenda” by the NDC to keep to its tradition of “denigrating” Asantes for political gains.

The spokesman further issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the National Democratic Congress communication team member to immediately retract the offensive statements and render an unqualified apology to Mr. Kufuor, failure of which the youth group will take an appropriate action.

Nana Boateng added that it will not be surprising that the next target could be the Asantehene, as broadcaster Kevin Taylor, a known NDC loyalist, has already launched series of attacks on Asantes, mainly focusing on high-ranking Asante leaders, including His Majesty the Asantehene.

As a result of these developments, Gyataba has urged all well-meaning Asantes to rise against the malicious plans of the NDC and reflect deeply on the issue and come out in numbers to vote massively for the NPP in the December 7 elections, noting that supporting the NPP is the surest way to protect our heritage because a return of the NDC will spell doom for Asantes.

EU launches Anti-Disinformation campaign ahead of Ghana’s 2024 elections

0

The European Union (EU), in partnership with the Embassies of the Netherlands and France, has launched an ambitious campaign to combat disinformation in the lead-up to Ghana’s 2024 elections.

Dubbed the “Check the Facts; Don’t Get It Twisted” campaign, the initiative is aimed at promoting credible information, media literacy and critical thinking, particularly among young voters.

The campaign aligns with the EU and its Member States’ broader efforts to ensure transparent, inclusive and peaceful elections in Ghana.

The campaign harnesses the influence of popular Ghanaian figures, including celebrities like Dr Likee, Kwame Eugene, Akrobeto, Fancy Gadam, Camidoh, Ama Burland, Gisela, Kojo Jnr and Wiyaala.

By engaging these public figures, the campaign seeks to amplify its message, encouraging young people to think critically and engage in fact-based discussions during the election period.

The “Check the Facts” initiative will feature Skits, Jingles and Podcasts infused with humor to enhance media literacy.

The content will be presented in multiple languages – English, Ga, Twi, Ewe, Sissala, Hausa and Dagbani – to reach diverse audiences across Ghana.

These efforts will continue throughout the election period and the immediate aftermath, focusing on empowering Ghanaians with the skills to identify and reject misinformation.

EU Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaaly, expressed optimism about the campaign’s impact. “This initiative helps to promote responsible reporting and fact-based information sharing in Ghana. We are committed to supporting Ghana’s democratic development and look forward to a successful collaboration with Ghanaian Celebrities and Civil Society Organisations.”

Similarly, French Ambassador to Ghana, Jules Armand Aniambossou, underscored the importance of reliable information access: “France is committed with its European partners, local players and Celebrities to support transparent and inclusive elections that respect democracy.

It is crucial to strengthen access to reliable information in all of Ghana’s most popular languages for all citizens in order to counter the pernicious effects of misinformation.”

The Netherlands Embassy echoed this commitment, emphasising the campaign’s role in fostering informed young voters: “To trust the process, it is important to be well-informed and know how to fact-check the information out there. When young citizens are empowered to seek factual information, they become ambassadors against misinformation and play an active part in Ghanaian democracy.”

Ultimately, the “Check the Facts; Don’t Get It Twisted” campaign aims to protect Ghanaian voters from misinformation and bolster the nation’s resilience against disinformation – an issue that has been identified as a significant global risk over the next two years.

Feature: The NDC’s Perception of Laws in Ghana

0
The flag of the NDC

Why is it that anytime court rulings go against the National Democratic Congress (NDC), it creates chaos in this country, making the judges look as if they do not know about the law and only always doing the biddings of the NPP? NDC lawyers will come and interpret the law in a way to convince Ghanaians that they are the best legal practitioners when in actual fact they are not.

Whenever a judgment is passed against the NPP, the NDC would in a hurry, sing praises of the courts to the highest heavens. But when that same judgment is later passed against it, this political party will raise hell and make it to be seen as if war is looming in this country.

The earlier the NDC is advised to become good losers for the sake unity in this country, the better.

In December 1993, the constitutionally elected NDC, had wanted to celebrate the December 31 Revolution with all its pomp and pageantry as it had been celebrating since 1982. This revolution was about the unconstitutional overthrow of a popularly elected government on December 31, 1981. Any toddler will tell you that it is simply not right. It is like the West demanding that the UN adopts a day when slave trade will be celebrated across the world.

The opposition NPP took this to the Supreme Court for interpretation and had judgment in its favour. 31 December Revolution was not to be celebrated in Ghana, under a constitutional era.

Ghanaians can remember the irresponsible response by the NDC and like organising a pork show in a Muslim community, Rawlings celebrated the event anyway, with one of his henchmen, Sgt. Major W.O. I Frimpong aka Red Light openly saying at the El Wak stadium, that “if there is freedom of speech, then there should be freedom of assassination.” Rawlings laughed with contentment while the whole grounds was erupted into joy.

Rawlings and the NDC defied the law and celebrated what it frowns upon, clearly indicating that they are the Law and not the Constitution. That day there was a grand parade on the principal streets of Accra to the El-Wak stadium where lawlessness and stupidity were celebrated and climaxed.

In July 2012, the NPP MP for Bawku Central, Adamu Daramani Sakande, was convicted and jailed over the issue of dual citizenship. At the time of filing his papers to contest the 2008 elections he had not denounced his UK citizenship. The NPP accepted the court ruling, knowing that Hon. Sakande broke the law.

Going into the 2020 Parliamentary elections, NDC’s James Gyekye Quayson filed his papers to contest the Assin North seat, without first denouncing his Canadian citizenship. He won the elections and this was contested in court. The NDC grew wild and supported the MP saying he denounced his citizenship after the submission of forms and before the elections, so he committed no crime.

It just made no sense. Explaining this issue in plan language, is like someone being called to an interview for a job. Among the requirements, is a proof of academic qualification, meaning a certificate to show he successfully completed some courses of study. Unfortunately, this fellow just finished his exams and was awaiting results, so he had no certificate to produce. Can he be accepted for the position he was seeking? Of course not. Others who have proof of that level of education would be accepted for the next stage and that is during the short listing.

At the time of their interviews, that is submission of forms, Sakande and Quayson had not denounce the foreign citizenship, so they had no business of presenting themselves to be considered to contest the elections.

Sakande of the NPP, was jailed, where he got ill and died later when he was out of jail. However, and perhaps to calm down the chaos the NDC was brewing, the Supreme Court, declared the Assin North seat vacant and James Quayson, who should have been in jail, was allowed to contest again.

And Ghanaians sat down and allowed the NDC to interpret the law to suit its parochialinterests.

In August 2013, during the historic verdict of the Supreme Court on the Election Petition of the flag bearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, the lead judge, Justice Atuguba, in pronouncing judgment, first made a statement to imply that since no where in Africa has election petition gone against the ruling government it can never happen in Ghana.

Then, as if to say that he had prepared the judgment long before the case came to court, ala kangaroo court style, he politely set aside the violation of Art. 49 (3) by thousands of presiding officers, which mandated them to sign the declaration of results before announcing it at the poling stations, but which they failed to do so. And he went ahead to give the verdict, and stole the victory in court from the NPP and awarded it to the NDC.

Ghana did not erupt into chaos and conflicts, since the NPP accepted the Supreme Court decision, even though it never agreed with it.

In 2020, six new regions were created from existing ones and there was a referendum in the affected areas to determine whether the people approve of the declaration of the new regions.

The Volta region was among those to be split, and its northern part to be called Oti region. The NDC and the larger Ewe community were not happy at all. Nonetheless, the referendum went on, as planned.

After the referendum, some leading chiefs from Akpafu and Lolobiin the now Guan district took the matter to court. They wanted Guan to remain under the Hohoe municipality and therefore under the Vokta region.

With the matter in court, the president could not create the district. It was after the court ruling which went in favour of government that the Guan district was created when the Legislative Instrument came into force on November 9, 2024, the day Parliament rose and the House could not assemble until December 14, 2020 after the elections were over.

So, there was no way the people of Guan could have voted for an MP, since the EC could not create the constituency. And since constituencies cannot be created during the term of Parliament, nothing could be done, until Elections 2024.

To this day, even well seasoned NDC lawyers who know the law and other members of that party are up and about their propaganda worst, spreading falsehood that government and the EC had disenfranchised the people of Guan.

The NDC who is always up in arms against government and the EC, in what it believes to bedenyingthe people of Guan, their voice in the House, is today fully in support of the removal of four sitting MPs who are alleged to have violated Art. 97 (1g and 1h), to deny their constituents their voices in Parliament.

It is on record that in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012, some sitting MPs contested the next elections under different tickets than what brought them to the House. No NDC member drew the attention of the Speaker to the violation of the Constitution.

In 2020, the NPP wrote to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mike Ocquaye that its MP for Fomena, Hon Andrew Asiamah Amoako, had violated Art. 3 of the party’s constitution, under Forfeiture of Membership, so he ceased to be a member of the party, and the Speaker should make him vacate his seat, which was done.

Drawing on this and with the hope of becoming majority in Parliament, the NDC drew the attention of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, that Art. 97 (1g & 1h) had been violated by four sitting MPs, three from the majority side and one from the minority. The Speaker made that pronouncement and the majority leader, Hon. Afenyo-Markins rushed to the Supreme Court for interpretation. The court pronounced stay of execution for it to determine the case and come out with its ruling.

The NDC as usual took up arms and started creating confusion in the minds of the ordinary Ghanaian and virtually calling for conflict, stating that Executive and the Judiciary had colluded to rule the Legislature.

The Supreme Court came out with a 5-2 verdict, explaining that there was deeper meaning to that simple English statement written on Art. 97 (1g & 1h), and demonstrated clearly that until an MP pronounces that he is no longer on the ticket he came to the House with and chooses to take up another ticket, he or she cannot be made to vacate his seat if he decides to run on a different ticket in the coming elections.

The NDC flatly refused to start a revision course in English, to understand the Constitution, but rather raised the tempo of confusion, indirectly reminding Ghanaians that it is only when court verdicts go in its favour that justice should be said to be done. But hell must break loose if it loses a case in court.

NDC’s perceptions about laws in Ghana is very disturbing. Being the direct descendant of the PNDC which killed three judges who ruled against some decisions of Rawlings and his AFRC, it is very obvious that the NDC always wants to bully today’s judges, indirectly reminding them that what happened to the judges in 1982, could happen to them, if they rule against its interest in cases before the court. Can we call this Fourth Republic, one guided by the principle of rule of law?

It is about time, Ghanaians rise up and protect the Constitution, which I will always admit is full of confusion, until it is either completely replaced or properly amended.

The NDC cannot decide what the courts should say in cases before them.

Cameroon, Zimbabwe battle for top spot in Group J

With top spot in Group J of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers still up for grabs, Cameroon and Zimbabwe will do battle at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo on Tuesday.
The home side are unbeaten in each of their last seven meetings against the visitors, whose last win in this fixture came back in the 1994 World Cup qualifying round of matches.

Cameroon had to make do with a share of the spoils from their most recent outing against the Warriors of Namibia which ended goalless at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Despite being in the ascendancy for large spells of the clash in South Africa, Marc Brys saw his side fail to find the back of the net for only the second time since he took the reins from Rigobert Song back in April.
Nonetheless, it remains a more than positive start to life in charge of the Indomitable Lions for 62-year-old Brys, who is still yet to taste defeat after picking up four wins and three draws from his seven games to date.
With 11 points on the board from a possible 15, Cameroon currently lead the way in Group J of the qualifiers, two points ahead of Zimbabwe leading up to Tuesday’s meeting in Yaounde.
Zimbabwe are one of 11 teams without defeat in the AFCON qualifiers after the first five rounds of matches and could become one of only two current group runners-up to achieve this feat alongside Comoros.
Both teams have given a good account of themselves over the last couple of matches, and Tuesday’s encounter could really swing either way.

Egypt play host to Botswana in Cairo

With their place in their home tournament already guaranteed, Egypt bring their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign to an end on Tuesday when they play host to Botswana in Cairo’s 30 June Stadium on Tuesday.

Botswana players

Having lost each of the last four meetings between the two nations, the Zebras will head into the group finale looking to get one over the home side and secure qualification for the continental showpiece for the first time since 2012.

Egypt’s 100% record in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign came to an end on Friday when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cape Verde.

Before that, Egypt had already secured their spot in the continental showpiece for a fifth straight edition as they won each of their opening four games.

With Friday’s result, Hossam Hassan‘s men have now gone seven straight games without defeat across all competitions, claiming two draws and five wins.

Botswana, who have failed to feature in AFCON since their group-stage exit in 2012, have picked up seven points from a possible 15 to sit second in Group C, five points off leaders Egypt and just three above third-placed Cape Verde.

While Egypt can rest on their laurels, having already secured qualification, Botswana need a point at the 30 June Stadium to end their 12-year AFCON absence.

Senegal and Burundi go head-to-head in final game

Senegal and Burundi will go head-to-head in their final game of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade on Tuesday.

The clash will have no bearing on the qualification status of either team, as the hosts have already secured their spot at the tournament, while the visitors are now mathematically unable to qualify.

Sadio Mane, Senegal

Having already secured a place at the 2025 AFCON in the last international window after their win over Malawi, Senegal had only pride and the top spot to play for when they took to the pitch last Thursday against Burkina Faso, who had also booked their spot.

Both teams were tied on 10 points heading into the game, with the Lions of Teranga in second place due to an inferior goal difference – but by the end of 90 minutes, Pape Thiaw‘s men had moved to the top of the group after a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso, thanks to Mouhamadou Diarra‘s 83rd-minute goal.

Ensuring they hold onto this spot will be the aim when they take on Burundi at home on Tuesday, and they head into the game knowing that a draw would be enough to achieve that.

Former Liverpool winger Sadio Mane has scored three goals for Senegal in this competition, and he is expected to get another opportunity to add to his tally, even though a second-string side is mostly expected.

Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson could also start, getting another chance to add to the one goal he has scored so far, with Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye and Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr also in contention to retain their spots in attack.

Bafana look to seal top spot in Afcon qualifiers

South Africa will look to seal top spot in Group K of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers when they host South Sudan for their final match, set for the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday night. South Africa secured their place at the next Afcon in the previous round of games, with South Sudan’s 3-2 win over Congo last week Thursday handing both Bafana Bafana and Uganda a ticket to Morocco 2025.

Bafana players

South Africa then went on to defeat the Cranes 2-0 in Kampala the following day to leapfrog to the top of the group (courtesy of second-half goals from Thapelo Morena and Patrick Maswanganyi) and guaranteeing that position with a win over South Sudan in the ‘Mother City’ will be their objective on Tuesday evening.

Finishing top of the standings will have the additional benefit of giving Bafana a better seeding for the Afcon group stage draw.

In head-to-head stats, South Africa and South Sudan have met in just one previous match. Bafana beat the Bright Stars 3-2 in Juba in September earlier in this Afcon qualifier campaign.
