Odikro, 2 other arrested and granted bail in 19k rubber trees destruction

Three persons, including an Odikro (Chief), have been arrested by the Takoradi Divisional Police in connection with the destruction of rubber trees belonging to Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL).

The three have, since, been granted bail while the police pursue others linked to the destruction of the rubber trees.

The three, who the police described as an interest group, are said to have instigated others to destroy a 30-hectare rubber plantation at Abura.

In the course of the destruction, 19,000 rubber trees were cut down by the unscrupulous persons. GREL has estimated the cost of the destruction to 100 thousand Euros.

Meanwhile, the Association of Chiefs on whose land the rubber the company operated, has thrown its weight behind the police to arrest and prosecute anyone found culpable in the destruction of the rubber trees.

According to the Association, the action was backward and amounted to forceful takeover of the company’s land.

The Chairman, Nana Kwesi Agyemang, on behalf of his colleague chiefs gave the association’s blessings to the police to arrest the perpetrators.
