NPP Parliamentary Primaries: MMDCEs are not eligible to contest sitting MPs

The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has excluded Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) from contesting in the upcoming parliamentary primaries.

The decision, contained in a statement the party issued on Monday, July 20, 2023, affects MMDCEs who wish to contest in the 137 constituencies the NPP won in the 2020 elections.

“MMDCEs in constituencies where the party has sitting Members of Parliament are not eligible to contest in the parliamentary primaries for those constituencies,” the party said in a release.

The above is part of three decisions the Council reached at the last meeting held on Thursday, July 20, 2023, a meeting that considered the guidelines for the conduct of the internal primaries for constituencies in the hands of the party.

The other two decisions are that regional and constituency party executives who wish to contest in the primaries in the party’s 137 constituencies should resign from their respective positions not later than September 20, 2023.

The statement said that all such executives shall tender their resignation letters to their respective regional party secretariats by the said date.

The National Council, at its Thursday meeting, approved the recommendations of the Vetting Committee, clearing all ten aspiring presidential candidates to contest in the primaries.
