According to The Chronicle sources, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairmanship contests in the Eastern and Ashanti Regions are increasingly tilting in favour of Chairman Kwadwo Boateng-Agyemang {chairman Cudjoe} and Odeneho Kwaku Appiah {Coka}, respectively, with delegates in the two regions showing strong preference for the two incumbents ahead of Saturday’s election.
From Akuapem to Kwahu in the Eastern Region, and from Bantama to Offinso in the Ashanti Region, the mood on the ground appears to be telling a story even before the final numbers are counted.
The Chronicle sources familiar with the campaigns say Chairman Cudjoe is cruising in the Eastern Region, while Chairman Coka is enjoying a similarly strong position in Ashanti, two of the New Patriotic Party’s most influential regional blocs.
The indications, according to the sources, are based on engagements with delegates and constituency executives across the two regions, where both chairmen are said to have secured significant early support.
Neither campaign is a product of the last six months. Both aspirants have built their political careers from the polling-station and constituency levels, a history that delegates have repeatedly cited in explaining their preference.
In the Eastern Region, Cudjoe’s campaign is reported to have benefited from his longstanding grassroots connections, with delegates across constituencies pointing to his familiarity with the party’s structures and local organisers.
The situation is said to be similar in Ashanti, where Coka’s organisational strength and relationship with constituency executives have reportedly given him an advantage over competing camps.
EASTERN AND ASHANTI ALIGN
The apparent alignment of the two regions is significant because the Eastern and Ashanti Regions have traditionally played different roles in determining the NPP’s internal political dynamics.
While the Eastern Region has often been associated with strategic positioning and candidate selection, Ashanti has historically been regarded as a region where organisational strength and grassroots mobilisation carry considerable weight.
According to Chronicle sources, however, delegates in both regions appear to be sending a similar message this time: a preference for chairmen who have deep roots within the party structures and understand the concerns of delegates at the grassroots.
The feedback from Ashanti, in particular, points to strong participation in constituency-level engagements, early commitments from executives and limited movement towards rival camps.
Sources say the same pattern is emerging in the Eastern Region, where Cudjoe is said to have maintained a commanding position as the election approaches.
The apparent support for the two chairmen could have implications beyond the regional contests.
The Eastern and Ashanti Regions control two of the NPP’s most important blocs of grassroots and delegate structures. Their choices could therefore influence the broader direction of the party’s internal politics and the organisation of future national campaigns.
For now, however, the message emerging from both regions, according to Chronicle sources, appears clear: Cudjoe has the Eastern Region, while Coka is firmly in command in Ashanti. The final verdict will come from the delegates on Saturday.
