To enable many more people to access treatment of heart diseases, the National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, is planning to open more branches across the country.
Dr. Kow Enstua-Mensah, Director of National Cardiothoracic Centre, who disclosed this to newsmen at a day’s mini Clinic at Akaporiso in the Obuasi East Municipality, noted that for most people, travelling to Accra to seek medical care was a nightmare. He added that opening more centres across the country is the way to go in order to help such people.
The Mini Clinic, organised by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine, focused on cardiology, breast cancer examination, eye screening, mass deworming and general OPD Services among others.
The Director stated that heart diseases are currently on the ascendancy in the country,
explaining that as the country’s population increases, so also is the increase of people with heart diseases.
To help reduce the number of people with the disease, Dr. Kow Enstua-Mensah called for reduction of salt in the food we eat because too much salt causes problems for the heart.
“After the food has been served and the salt in it is small by your standard, do not add any more salt since such practice does not auger well for your wellbeing,” he admonished.
He also called for regular eating of fruits and vegetables while reducing the consumption of carbohydrates.
Addressing the gathering earlier, Dr. Enstua-Mensah expressed his appreciation to AGA and Quantum LC Limited for making it possible for him and his team to come down to Obuasi.
He stated that discussions are ongoing with the authorities in Obuasi to see if it will be possible to extend the services at the National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle- Bu Teaching to the mining town.
Mr. Yaw Britwum Opoku, the Acting Director, Sustainability Management of AGA in his address, noted that over the years, the Mini Clinic has recorded remarkable results, reaching thousands of community members with essential healthcare services, contributing to improved health outcomes.
He expressed his appreciation to AGA Health Foundation, Quantum LC Limited, National Cardiothoracic Centre and Obuasi East and Obuasi Municipal Assemblies for supporting the Mini Clinic.
Nana Kitikyie Bosompim Apenteng, Krontihene of Dompoase and Overlord of Akaporiso/Pomposo thanked AGA for organising the Mini Clinic for his people.
He noted that periodic check-ups as the Mini Clinic sought to achieve are necessary and called on those gathered to comport themselves to benefit from the programme.
