Nana, Kufuor call for unity

President Akufo-Addo and former President John Agyekum Kufuor have called for unity in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2024 elections. According to the duo, with a united front, the party would be able to achieve its desire to break the 8-year tenure with regards to political parties holding power in the country.

The two separately addressed party people at the National Delegates Conference, held in Accra on Saturday, July 16, through to Sunday, July 17, this year.

Former President Kufuor delivered his address via a pre-recorded video, while President Akufo-Addo was present at the venue. The latter called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rally behind the party’s newly-elected executives. According to him, this would help the party in the upcoming general elections.

The President said the NPP was at its best when “we are united and operating as a focused entity. I, thus, urge all in the NPP to unite strongly behind our new national officers, for it is only by working together that we can ‘Break the Eight’, and help deliver progress and prosperity to the Ghanaian people.”

In a Facebook post on yesterday, he reiterated that call, saying the unity of the party was essential to its success, therefore, all members must unite to build a unified front, in order to retain power in 2024. “We have elected a team of officers with a deep attachment to the timeless values and principles of the party and its tradition, and who will steer affairs of the party for the next four years. They are the national face and voice of our party, and they will set the tone and the pace of our election campaign in 2024,” he wrote.

“I congratulate warmly the new National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Stephen Ayensu Ntim, and the other national officers who were elected at the party’s National Delegates’ Conference, held at the Accra Sports Stadium, on Saturday, 16th July 2022.

Once again, we, in the NPP, have demonstrated that we are the party that is committed to the tenets of multi-party democracy,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo commended Organised Labour for reaching and agreeing to the 15% Cost of Living Allowance and calling off their strikes.

“I want to say big thanks to Organised Labour for reaching an agreement with the government during their strike over their Cost of Living Allowance (COLA), because it then demonstrates also the concerns our party has, always had and will continue to have for the concerns of the workers and the people of Ghana,” he remarked.

FORMER PRESIDENT KUFUOR

Former President, John Agyekum Kufuor, in a video address, opined that the only political party capable of taking Ghana into prosperity was the NPP.

He advised the party not to lose sight of unity, while also urging members to shun acts that bring divisiveness.

“The NPP needs all the unity we can get, so we approach 2024 as a united force to draw even people not of our tradition into our fold so that with the numbers, we make the 50 percent plus one vote demanded by the national constitution to take power again,” he emphasised.

He added that Ghana needed the party to lead it into prosperity and transformation, stressing that must be the aspiration of all.

According to the Gentle Giant, this could be achieved if the delegates elected executives who would abide by the core ideals of the party in ensuring national progress – he spoke before the Conference.

Former President Kufuor had appealed to members of the NPP to elect into office leaders who would instil confidence in the party.

“Let us show true respect to the idea and the vision that true sovereignty is with the people. When we do that our definition of democracy will conform to the idea eloquently expressed as government of, for and by the people,” he said.
