Michael Essien ‘not interested’ in Black Stars coaching job

Michael Essien, the former Ghanaian international, has stated that he is currently “not interested” in taking over as head coach of the Black Stars. Although Essien holds both UEFA A and UEFA Elite Youth A licenses and is currently an assistant coach at FC Nordsjaelland in the Danish Superliga, the 40-year-old former Chelsea midfielder does not believe he is prepared to manage Ghana’s national team at this time.

In an encounter with Nigerian journalist Lolade Adewuyi during his travels to cover a UEFA Champions League match between Napoli and AC Milan, Essien expressed his lack of interest in the position.

“He said not interested,” Adewuyi tweeted along with a photo of himself with Essien.

Following a short stint with Azerbaijani side Sabail FK in 2020, Essien immediately began acquiring coaching badges, and in February of this year, he announced on social media that he had obtained the UEFA A and UEFA Elite Youth A licenses.

Essien played for the Black Stars at the 2006 and 2014 World Cups in Germany and Brazil, respectively, and won numerous titles with Chelsea, including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup. He also played for AC Milan and other clubs.
