Lawyer Charles Asmah has been elected First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) UK Branch, after securing 452 votes in the branch’s 2026 executive elections.
Mr Asmah obtained 68.90 per cent of the 660 valid votes cast to defeat Dr Emmanuel Mensah Asiedu, who polled 161 votes (24.54 per cent), while Colin Kofi Agyeman secured 43 votes (6.55 per cent).
The election covered all 16 chapters of the NPP UK Branch, with new executives elected to various positions, according to results released by the branch’s Communications Directorate.
Mr Asmah, a former treasurer of the branch, said his victory represented a strong vote of confidence from delegates and pledged to use his new position to promote unity and improve the welfare of party members.
“I am grateful to all the voters for the confidence they have reposed in me, by voting for me as the First Vice Chairman of the NPP UK Branch, having served as treasurer of our great party,” he said in an interview with the media.
He attributed the outcome partly to the support, prayers and advice he received from delegates and said although he had been optimistic about winning, he remained mindful that elections could produce unexpected results.
“I was optimistic about the outcome. However, delegates can pull surprises, so I had to work hard, amidst prayers. The outcome was quite surprising to me. Pulling 452 out of 660 votes indicates that it is the doing of the Lord,” he said.
Mr Asmah, popularly known as “Lawyer Oboa Nipa”, said his immediate priority would be to strengthen the welfare of party members and contribute to the development of the NPP’s structures in the UK.
He said the welfare programme would be designed to help members support one another, adding that a stronger branch in the UK could contribute to the party’s political fortunes in Ghana.
“We shall continue to serve our party and nation. The welfare will be robust so that we can help ourselves for the development of our party in the UK,” he said.
Role as First Vice Chairman
Explaining his responsibilities as First Vice Chairman, Mr Asmah described the position as a “utility player” within the UK branch, particularly because the office holder assumes the functions of the chairman in his absence.
He said he would work closely with the newly elected chairman, Andy Owusu, and other executives to build a united branch.
“The First Vice Chairman is a utility player for the UK NPP. In the absence of the chairman, the First Vice Chairman holds the fort and attends to the needs of the people,” he said.
Mr Asmah pledged to liaise with stakeholders, voluntary groups, chapter executives, the Council of Elders and other party structures across the UK.
“We have to unite and rally behind the chairman. We have to liaise with all the stakeholders, voluntary groups and chapters across the length and breadth of the UK, with the Council of Elders, old chapters and branch executives all getting on board,” he said.
He also reiterated a campaign proposal to introduce a “one member, one vote” system in future branch elections, under which every party member in good standing would be eligible to vote.
“As we indicated during the campaign, we have introduced one man, one vote and are looking into the future, where in the next cycle of elections, every party member who is in good standing can vote,” he said.
