Law lecturer recommends police presence in Parliament during next debate

A Senior Law Lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Dr. Kwaku Anane Gyinde, has recommended that the Ghana Police Service should provide security for the members of Parliament during the next debate when it resumes sitting.

The Law Lecturer’s recommendation follows his conviction that the security apparatus, including Marshalls, proved derisory and failed to provide the appropriate security for the Members of Parliament during the December 20, 2021 brawl between some members of the august House.

Dr. Gyinde, who was speaking to OTEC FM’s morning show host Captain Koda last December, intimated that failure on the part of the police to be present during such controversial debates in future could result in serious injuries to the members, and further discredit the success of our democracy, adding that the recent debacle had attracted untold disgrace to Ghanaians in the international community.

The Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, in a statement issued by ACP Kwesi Ofori, disclosed that they were investigating the December 20 impasse, and assured that they would ensure the matter would be followed to its logical conclusion.

But, commenting on the statement, Dr. Kwaku Anane Gyinde, who is also a private legal practitioner, downplayed the powers of the Ghana Police Service in investigating the matter, since it did not have the power to start any form of investigations, unless sanctioned by the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General to initiate such an exercise.

Speaking on the circumstance leading to the unfortunate situation, Dr. Kwaku Anane Gyinde insisted that the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, must squarely be blamed for the whole fracas, since his recent intransigent comments was exposing him on his avid stance against government business.

He, however, advised the Speaker to move away from partisan confrontational and antagonistic utterances, adding that it was time he reflected on the development in the House in order to maintain sanctity, else he would go home as the worst Speaker in Ghana’s history.
