Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, a contender for the New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairmanship, has continued his campaign with a second phase of constituency visits, urging party delegates to unite behind what he described as a message of hope, forgiveness and renewal following the party’s 2024 election defeat.
The tour took Dr. Kokofu to Obuasi East, Akrofuom, New Edubiase, Fomena, Bekwai, Odotobri and Bosome Freho, where he met newly elected constituency executives and congratulated those who won seats in the party’s recent internal elections.
At each stop, Dr. Kokofu argued that the NPP needed to rebuild trust at the grassroots to be competitive in the 2028 general election.
“We must restore hope to our party and strengthen the spirit of forgiveness and unity if we are to return stronger,” he told constituency executives.
Dr. Kokofu, a former chief executive of the Environmental Protection Agency and former member of Parliament for Bantama, set out proposals he said would strengthen the party’s organisation.
These include building a membership database, strengthening internal party and security structures, and directing more resources to the youth and women’s wings to support grassroots mobilisation.
He said he would work to reclaim constituencies the NPP lost to the National Democratic Congress in the 2024 election, arguing that his combination of academic and political experience qualified him to lead the rebuilding effort.
“My leadership will be a blend of academic and grassroots knowledge, wisdom, and practical experience to make the party work again in the region,” he said.
Dr. Kokofu called on party members not to let the internal chairmanship contest cause lasting division, saying members should unite behind flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia regardless of who wins the regional race. “Whether we win or lose, we have a collective responsibility to unite behind Dr. Bawumia,” he said.
He also said the party should respond more forcefully to what he characterised as misinformation targeting Dr. Bawumia and his family, referring to unspecified “fabricated stories” from the past that he said had gone unanswered. “We will not remain silent while falsehoods, propaganda, and malicious attacks are directed at our candidate or his family,” he said, calling on members to counter misinformation with facts and to promote the party’s record.
Constituency executives at the events pledged support for Dr. Kokofu’s bid and called on him to prioritise unity, party security and resource mobilisation if elected. The Ashanti Regional Chairmanship race is ongoing, with delegates expected to vote in the coming months.
