The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in Hamile, in the Upper West Region, has confirmed the death of one of its officers, following an explosion along an unapproved route in the Hamile Sector.

According to a press release signed by DSI Barbara Sam, on behalf of the Head of Public Affairs, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, November 3, 2026, during a border patrol operation.

A team of four officers responding to an unusual sound intercepted a man transporting a load on a tricycle. The rider attempted to flee and as the officers approached to inspect the load, it exploded.

The explosion killed the tricycle rider instantly and injured two immigration officers. One of the officers later succumbed to his injuries, while the other is receiving emergency medical care at Nandom Hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

The Sector Commander and a team of officers have since visited the scene. The area has been secured and investigations have commenced to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The GIS has assured the public that border security operations in the Hamile Sector remain fully operational and that measures have been taken to ensure safety in the area.

The Service has also appealed to the media and the public to respect the privacy of the affected families and refrain from circulating unverified information, images or videos of the incident.
