The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) , Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a reinforcement team, including two armoured vehicles from the Police National Headquarters, to New Winneba in the Central Region following a violent attack that has left three people dead and about 15 others injured.
The deployment forms part of efforts to contain violence that erupted in the township yesterday, September 1, 2026, when about 300 irate persons allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks stormed New Winneba.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the group, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, attacked natives, stores and residences, resulting in injuries and damage to property.
The Police said about 15 injured persons, including a police officer, have been sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment. Three persons have been confirmed dead.
Following the outbreak of violence, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to the affected areas to restore order and prevent further escalation.
The subsequent reinforcement ordered by the IGP is intended to strengthen the security presence and safeguard lives and property as the Police work to stabilise the situation.
The Police said the situation is currently under control.
However, the circumstances that triggered the violence, including the motive behind the mob action, remain unclear. The Police have indicated that further details will be communicated as investigations progress.
The deployment of armoured vehicles and additional personnel from the national headquarters signals the seriousness with which the Police are treating the incident and their determination to prevent a recurrence of the violence.
The Police have also urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as efforts continue to maintain peace in New Winneba.
