Huawei staff arrested for GH¢380k auction car fraud

An Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah, has remanded the Transport Officer of Huawei Company Limited, Frank Asirifi, for allegedly defrauding one Awudu Musah, a businessman based at New Town in Accra.

The court was told by the prosecuting officer, Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, yesterday, that Asirifi (accused) engaged Musah sometime in the year 2018, with the promise that he could help the latter to purchase auction vehicles from the Huawei Company Limited, where he worked.

According to him, at the time that the accused person had the discussion with the complainant, they were friends.

Inspector Alorwu added that, since the complainant was a car dealer, he also got interested in the deal and paid a cash of GH¢380, 000.00 to the accused, when he was told that the auction vehicles would be delivered in six months.

The prosecutor said: “[The] accused managed to convince the complainant and parted with cash, the sum of GH¢380,000.00 that he could get him the auction cars within six months, but failed to honour his promise and went into hiding.”

Meanwhile, efforts made by the complainant to get the accused for his money failed.

Luckily, he added, on September 9, 2022, the complainant spotted the accused at Kwame Nkrumah Circle near Tip Toe Lane, and with the help of some friends Asirifi was arrested and handed over to the police.

He stated that the accused admitted the offence in his investigation cautioned statement, and pleaded to be given some time to resolve the matter with the complainant.

The prosecutor added that after the police investigation, the accused was charged with the offence, defrauding by false pretences, and brought before the court.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢400,000, with two sureties.

The court ordered that all the sureties should be Ghanaian citizens, and must be residents within the jurisdiction of the court.

Also, one of the sureties must be a government worker who earned not less than GH¢1, 500.00 a month, while the other must have a fixed place of abide, as well as a fixed place of doing business.

The court adjourned the case to September 27.
