Ghana was plunged into widespread power outages early Thursday after a major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line triggered the automatic shutdown of generating units and some thermal power plants.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), in a statement issued on Thursday, August 20, 2026, said the fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m., resulting in the loss of electricity supply to parts of the country, including sections of Accra.

According to GRIDCo, the automatic tripping of the affected generating units was part of the power system’s protection mechanisms designed to safeguard the stability and integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System.

The incident is the second major widespread power disruption to hit the country in less than two months, renewing concerns about the resilience and reliability of Ghana’s electricity supply system.

Although GRIDCo attributed Thursday’s disruption to a fault on a key transmission line, the recurrence of major system disturbances is likely to fuel questions about the condition and efficiency of the country’s power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure.

GRIDCo, however, did not indicate in its initial statement what caused the fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line or whether any equipment had been damaged.

It said its engineers, working with other power-sector agencies, immediately moved to isolate the affected transmission line and began the “safe and systematic restoration” of the national power system.

“Power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, and restoration efforts are progressing steadily to ensure that supply is restored to all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible,” the company said.

GRIDCo assured the public that its technical teams had been fully mobilised and were working to restore power to all affected areas.

The company also apologised for the disruption and urged consumers to remain patient as restoration work continued.

Thursday’s incident places renewed attention on the vulnerability of Ghana’s interconnected power system, particularly the consequences of faults on major transmission corridors.

The Akosombo-Volta transmission corridor is an important component of the national grid, and a major disturbance along it can have implications beyond the immediate location of the fault because of the interconnected nature of the system.

However, the available information from GRIDCo does not, at this stage, establish whether Thursday’s outage resulted from inadequate generation capacity, transmission constraints, distribution failures or maintenance deficiencies.

Further technical details from GRIDCo and the other power-sector agencies will therefore be required to determine the precise cause of the disruption and whether measures are needed to prevent a recurrence.

GRIDCo said it would continue to provide updates as restoration efforts progressed.
