Large parts of Ghana were plunged into darkness in the early hours of Wednesday after a major disturbance on the national electricity transmission system triggered the shutdown of several power generation plants, prompting the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to launch emergency restoration efforts and a technical investigation.
The power system disturbance occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, disrupting electricity supply to several parts of the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, GRIDCo said the incident caused the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants connected to the National Interconnected Transmission System, resulting in widespread power interruptions.
According to the transmission company, engineers and system operators immediately activated established system restoration procedures and were working closely with other stakeholders in the power sector to restore electricity to affected areas as quickly as possible.
“GRIDCo has activated its established system restoration procedures. Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety,” the statement said.
The company stressed that restoring power safely remained its top priority while efforts continued to bring all affected customers back onto the national grid.
GRIDCo also announced that it had commenced a comprehensive technical investigation to establish the exact cause of the disturbance.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine what triggered the widespread outage and guide any corrective measures needed to prevent a recurrence.
The company apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused by the outage and appealed for patience as restoration works continued.
“We remain fully committed to restoring supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible and will provide further updates as more information becomes available,” GRIDCo assured.
The outage disrupted electricity supply across several parts of the country, although GRIDCo did not immediately specify the number of customers or regions affected.
Power system disturbances of this nature typically require a carefully coordinated restoration process to stabilise the national grid before electricity is progressively restored to consumers.
GRIDCo said it would issue further updates as engineers continue restoration efforts and investigations into the incident progress.
