GIS celebrates International Women’s Day with female officers

The Gender Main Streaming Unit of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) yesterday organised a conference to honour women in the service to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD) in the country.

The event, which was under the theme ‘DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’ was aimed at celebrating the technological contributions and achievements of women throughout the years.

Also, it was intended to inform the participants about the ongoing fight for equality, against gender bias, the need to get rid of prejudice, and the importance of providing both male and female GIS officers with the opportunity to share their experience and learn fresh views on gender issues.

The Director for the Ministry of the Interior, Adelaide Anno-Kumi, addressed the audience during the keynote speech and praised the accomplishments of women around the world, while stressing the need for African women to become more ICT-savvy in order to catch up with the western world.

She claimed that the ability to gather information, which was frequently accomplished through the use of ICT technologies, was what set highly knowledgeable people apart from the rest.

The deputy Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Francisca Oteng Mensah, hailed the GIS for their continuous work to include women in all aspects, and encouraged faith-based organisations, traditional leaders, and other fraternities to put women in leadership positions in their institutions.

In a statement read on behalf of the head of region for West Africa at the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), MojisolaSodeinde,  she emphasized the importance of increasing the representation of women in the ICT industries in order to assist combat inequality across all sectors.

“Involving female officers in ICT fields can help achieve a higher rate of productivity and innovation to lessen professional shortage. We look forward to seeing more female officers shattering the glass ceiling and attaining higher laurels in ICT.”

She concluded with quote from EU Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaaly, that: “democracy is complete only if all social groups are included in

decision- and change-making. Women are an essential driving force in this regard.”

Here in Ghana, the EU supports impressive women entrepreneurs, farmers and leaders to take part in innovation and growth across the country.
