The Western Regional Health Directorate has assured the public that power supply has been fully restored at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital following a recent outage that sparked concerns on social media over patient care at the facility.

In a press release issued on April 18, 2026, Dr. (Med) Marion Okoh- Owusu, said all clinical and support services at the hospital are currently functioning, stressing that management remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of healthcare delivery and patient safety.

The statement was in response to a circulating social media post that raised alarm about conditions in the hospital’s theatre during the outage. Authorities said while they appreciated the public concern, swift measures were taken to safeguard patients and restore normal operations.

According to the Directorate, the incident occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, April 16, when the hospital experienced a disruption in the main national grid power supply. However, the facility’s standby generator, which is designed to start automatically during outages, failed to engage.

Management noted that the generator had successfully powered the hospital during an earlier outage the previous day, making the malfunction unexpected.

The hospital’s in-house clinical engineering team immediately responded to the challenge, while additional technical support was brought in from Accra. Engineers from Cummins, the manufacturers and suppliers of the generator, were also deployed to the hospital to undertake technical assessments and repairs aimed at restoring the backup power unit to full capacity.

The Regional Health Directorate emphasized that patient safety remained the foremost priority throughout the incident and confirmed that no deaths were recorded.

It further acknowledged the concerns expressed by patients, clients, stakeholders and the wider public, describing the feedback as a sign of confidence in the institution. “The trust placed in our institution reinforces our commitment to continuous improvement,” the statement noted.

Management added that steps are being taken to strengthen systems and prevent future occurrences, while ensuring uninterrupted delivery of healthcare services.
