CPA UK lauds Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) United Kingdom (UK) has lauded the Right Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin for the significant role he is playing in the maintenance and stability of the democratic dispensation.

The Speaker of Parliament is on a three-day visit to the CPA UK.

Jon Davies, Chief Executive of the CPA UK, said: “CPA UK looks forward to strengthening its relationship with the Parliament of Ghana, through the three-day visit.”

The programme, he believes, will provide opportunities for mutual learning through discussions of shared challenges faced by their respective Parliaments.

The Speaker-led visits are part of the CPA UK’s wider work in delivering activities focused on strengthening parliamentary democracy throughout the Commonwealth.

The visit is expected to impact on Ghana’s Parliament, which is experiencing a hung process for the first time, with a majority of one, which situation has left parliamentarians keen to deepening the understanding of parliamentary procedure and governance.

The three-day programme, held within the UK Parliament, provides an opportunity for discussions on the impact of a hung parliament and small majority on business.

The programme will cover parliamentary procedure in the UK, parliamentary accountability through committees, and ministerial obligations and responsibilities.

The CPA UK, in partnership with the Parliament of Ghana, organised a workshop on Trade, Gender, and Security in Accra in January 2022.

The Rt. Hon. Bagbin, at the discussion, noted that the workshop, which begun in 2022, had provided the current programme a great opportunity to strengthen their bonds to learn from one another, and face modern challenges.
