Court slaps businessman with GH¢50,000 bail

The Circuit Court ‘9’, presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah, has granted Samuel Nana Kofi Sarfo bail in the sum of GH¢50,000, with three sureties, one of who should be a government worker, while the others must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

The accused was put before the court yesterday on one count of defrauding by false pretence, but pleaded not guilty.

The court has adjourned the case to August 29, 2022 for continuation.

However, the brief facts presented on behalf of the prosecuting officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Augustine Yirenky, indicated that the complainant in the case is Bright Alan Yeboah, a businessman residing at East Legon, Accra, whereas the accused is 46 years old and also a businessman.

According to him, somewhere in February 2021, the accused went to the complainant’s company, Smart Office Limited, and ordered iPhones, MacBooks, printers and television sets, all valued at US$61,071.98.

He added that after the complainant had supplied the said items to the accused, he promised to pay the amount involved in a week’s time. Unfortunately, when the time was due, all efforts by the complainant to reach the accused proved futile.

The prosecution explained to the court that when the complainant went to the supposed office of the accused, he was told that Samuel no longer owned the office space.

Regrettably, the prosecuting officer said, all efforts by the complainant to trace the accused proved unsuccessful, therefore, on August 2, 2022, he lodged a complainant with the police.

DSP Yirenkyi states that the accused was traced and arrested from his hideout, and during interrogation, he admitted the offence in his caution statement, and mentioned Jonathan Yaw Mantey and Miss Tossan as his accomplices.

The accused said Mantey and Tossan were the ones who received the goods, but he failed to lead police for their arrest.

He added that the accused was charged with the offence and arraigned before this honourable court, adding that efforts were being made to trace and arrest the said accomplices.
